My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

Trix Cereal has serious balls.

I know this is pretty close to old news by now, but in case you haven't heard, Trix cereal has a brand new shape...that isn't brand new at all.

Yes, after a fifteen year mistake, General Mills has finally caved into the demands of old school Trix-lovers and switched back to the familiar ball-shaped cereal bits of the year-before-yesteryear. At least, that's how I'd like to think it went down. I never voiced my disgust when Trix swapped to marbly fruit shapes in the early '90s, but surely someone did.

Okay, so it's a stretch to imagine that General Mills was catering to a market of people in their late 20s and 30s with the switch back to ball shapes, but if not that, then why? Cost-cutting measure? Product of a focus group where demographically diverse children aged 5-7 unanimously agreed that making grape-flavored cereal bits grape-shaped was overkill?

Whatever...the cause isn't as important as the effect: We've got our Trix back! To celebrate, here's a look back at one of the few times in history that the Trix Rabbit was actually allowed...to eat Trix cereal.

I won't say that it was the only time, because that's not true. But you could count the number of times that the Trix Rabbit got to eat Trix cereal on one hand, and you'd still have enough fingers leftover to violate someone three different ways. I don't remember the exact specifics of this promotion, but it involved our bunny pal racing a couple of kids for the right to eat a bowl of Trix. There was some kind of viewer vote aspect to the promotion, and of course, everyone watching at home thought that those cartoon kids were assholes -- of course we voted for the Trix Rabbit to have his Trix.

And so, in this commercial -- the big finale for the months-spanning promotion -- we finally got our wish. The Trix Rabbit wins the vote, wins the bike race and wins a big, beautiful bowl of ball-shaped Trix cereal. Gotta be honest...it's pretty anticlimactic. The heroic hare (pardon the lame nicknames -- I'm just trying to avoid using the word "Trix" a hundred times per paragraph) doesn't show much more excitement in eating Trix as he did just thinking about eating Trix. With years of bittersweet near-successes under his belt, you'd think he be a little more orgasmic about this. Oh, sure, he still floods the screen in various shades of fruit colors with excitement, but it's just not what I expected. I needed a little more. I needed him to rocket up into the sky and write "I LOVE TRIX" with ass-made cloud letters. Then again, this wasn't my moment...it was his.

Click here to watch the commercial, which aired sometime in the early '90s. Note how they cut the rabbit's celebration short to talk up the free packs of Life Savers found in every box of Trix cereal. General Mills was so hoping we'd vote the other way.

Two posts in one day? Nice! And much appreciated, of course.

Completely unrelated, but did anyone else catch the sunny sky/snow flurry mixture in New York today? Sure, it’s my first year in New York, but it seemed…weird.

Im on LI…we didn’t get any of it.

One of my favorite ads involves the Trix Rabbit…This live-0action ad has this guy coming home to his mom with a bag full of Trix. The mom’s like “That’s kids stuff!” or something like that. He sits down to eat it and reveals himself to be the Trix Rabbit “Trix is for…RABBITS!” he says before pouring milk…which he finds out there’s none left in the carton. His reaction is absolutely priceless.

It turns out ot be one of the first “Got Milk?” ads…and it’s been my favorite one (the one that comes slightly close enough for #2 is the Town with No Milk ad they did)

They should show the bunny love more often.

I’m still waiting for the kids to garbage the poor pale mammal, only to shout ‘Silly Rabbit! Intestines are for the living!’

I also discovered something very disturbing in my college’s cafeteria: Clamato Tortilla Chips! http://x-entertainment.com/updates/index.php?p=802

A year of looking in the wrong places…and I find it just last week. If the one & only bag is still there on Monday, I’ll try it for myself.

I personally challenge everyone to say:

I’m so happy I could rocket to the sky and write (insert message) in ass-made cloud letters.

Tomorrow. Yes, tomorrow.

If they really wanted to make some money, they should dress their cereals with the holidays accordingly.

Matt,

Sorry for double post, but I just realized… The X-E Halloween Countdown has really become a tradition for me on Halloween. With all the new updates, its inevitable that the 2003 countdown will eventually be taken down to make room, and eventually the 2004 and so on. Is there any way you get take all the pictures and HTML files of the 2003-2006 Halloween countdown, put it in a zip, and make it available to download?

Chestnuts roasted by Dane @ 04/06/2007 1:03 AM

Dane — You have nothing to worry about, all of the Countdowns will stay up for as long as the site lasts. :)

Matt,

Keep being cool :D

Didn’t the Advent calendar end with rabbits? Alluding to an Easter countdown?

It’s time to get nasty with some Trix Pops!…oh..and more posts about gum.

Sort of related:

Anyone else see Conan last night where they proved that the Cadbury eggs are now smaller in size? What’s up with that?

(okay, in no way related; went for the rabbit-easter connection)

I’m just busy digging the guy holding the “YES” sign on the left’s purple tie and amazing golden mustache..

Chestnuts roasted by Review the World @ 04/06/2007 2:03 AM

That guy on the right (our right, not his) looks like the mean magician in Frosty the Snowman. Except he bleached his hair.

Chestnuts roasted by Shelby @ 04/06/2007 2:17 AM

Hmm…I don’t think I’ve ever eaten Trix.

Chestnuts roasted by Retro Playback @ 04/06/2007 2:18 AM

Shaunfu, I saw that too. I KNEW that the eggs this year were smaller! This may be a conspiracy of Da Vinci Code-levels…or maybe just the Hare Club For Men.

I was ain a Wauldbaums today and found Cadbury eggs that didn’t seem small, but big as always! Either that Cadbury caught on or…ew.

Oh wow, does that commercial bring back so many memories! I can’t believe it’s been that long since they switched to the fruit shapes from the balls. I do know that it was after 1991 because if you recall from the first “Adams Family” movie, when Gomez is playing golf and his golf ball smashes his neighbor’s window and falls into the neighbor’s breakfast bowl, he is eating the old style Trix with the ball shapes. I believe they switched soon after that.

Anyway, I promise to keep this post short. Man, if I’m one to write long comments, perhaps I should type them on my own Blog page on my MySpace and tell all of you to click my name and my blog yourself.

By the way, that commercial being a two-part was a rare thing in those days, weren’t they? The only other two-part commercial I recall was the Lucky Charms where Lucky was wondering what to name his new marshmallow shape. We had to wait for part-two for the horse behind him to kick him in the ass and have Lucky think, “Yeah, purple horseshoe would make a great color shape!” We can only guess for the many reasons the color was purple. Anyway, that’s all for me for right now. I tried keeping this as short as I can and post it as early as I can so that I can be noticed and not overlooked which happens so often!

Chestnuts roasted by BJ @ 04/06/2007 2:29 AM

I could hold up a big “YES” sign too right now–it’s been forever since I’ve seen this ad.

One correction, though, and this time I know I’m right, because you just don’t forget the year you saw the Rabbit eat Trix: THIS AD APPEARED IN 1991. NOT THE MID-80′S. 1991.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 04/06/2007 2:49 AM

Just watched the ad now. Yep, lime green was not introduced into Trix as a flavor until 1990…

Of course it ended with the line, “I’ll never be the same.” Shortly after this, Trix introduced the fruit-shaped version of its cereal, and the Rabbit was still moaning about never getting to eat it. Either they brainwashed him, or he’s so stupid that he thought this was a completely different cereal that was just as desirable and had the same name….

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 04/06/2007 2:53 AM

Okay Mars, you seem pretty confident, so I’ve changed it to say “early ’90s.” It’s all starting to blend together for me.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 04/06/2007 2:54 AM

I uploaded the commercial promoting the debut of Trix “new fruit shapes” from 1991 on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7Yi5Kgrt6g

Chestnuts roasted by Jonathan @ 04/06/2007 3:01 AM

Yeah, how anti-climatic.

And now I’m craving Trix, because I haven’t had them since I was 5….wait, did I ever have them? Do they sell Trix in Canada? Why don’t I ever have it?

Anyways, anyone remember Trix yogurt? For some reason, I was always enamoured with it, but never had any.

Chestnuts roasted by Tutsuro @ 04/06/2007 3:15 AM

Trix yogurt is still around.

I think another time he got to eat Trix was just like this commercial, only it was a boat race. I’m only vaguely remembering something my mom told me a long time ago though.

Also,
I like how a recent commercial for a Trix trick-out-your-room-type sweepstakes implies that the rabbit is aware he can simply BUY Trix, but doesn’t because he (most likely) doesn’t have any damn money.

Chestnuts roasted by RewolfJ @ 04/06/2007 5:16 AM

The Cadbury bunny could kick the Trix rabbit’s ass.
