03/31/2007: I’m a sad, sad man.
Well, I’ve hit a new low. I think I will reflect on the events of today for years to come, forever associating them with me at my most rock-bottomnest, forever favorably comparing even the darkest days of the future to what transpired this afternoon. After today, I have nowhere to go but up. At least that’s comforting.

It all started a few weeks ago when we were visiting with my mother, who among other unsavory things is a devout Pogo addict. Pogo, for the uninitiated, is an online game site where people with nothing better to do — people numbering in the hundreds of thousands — spend 24 hours a day playing online slot, card and puzzle games, building up useless tokens and praying to join the minuscule fraction of players who actually win
real money from the beast.
As others sat around the table for coffee and whatever, I snuck onto her computer and gave Pogo a whirl. Indeed, it’s an addictive site. From slot machines filled with oinking pig graphics to online realizations of everything from Scrabble to Vegas-style slot machines, it’s mindblowingly mindless fun.
Today, I set up my own account, even going as far as paying the premium for the ad-less version of the site, which also features exclusive games. My favorite timewaster quickly became Texas Hold ‘Em, which is played against real people for real Pogo tokens. Now, you can play on the low side, or you can go into the high roller rooms, where hands can get up to and over 100,000 tokens each. While it may seem surprising considering how many Pogo addicts have token counts numbering in the high millions, I found out quick that token-building takes a considerable amount of time — much more time than I could ever afford to spend on Pogo Dawt Cawm. The poker stars of Pogo won’t have me at their tables with my pitiful token count. Something had to be done.
So, I scoured the Internet, and sure enough, clever housewives have devised systems that, through some means that surely reflect poorly upon Pogo’s terms of service, allow newbie players to purchase worthless Pogo tokens for real money. The short version of the story: I’m out 60 bucks for 10 million shiny new Pogo tokens.
That’s right, my friends. It’s kind of like paying one of your neighbors to come beat Zelda for you. I don’t know how the person I paid did it exactly — I had to grant her access to my account, and I believe she and her network of entrepreneurs sat in a high stakes poker room, playing the cards in her favor until my account clocked in at the paid-for token count. After an hour or two, she sent me an e-mail giving me the go-ahead to play away with my newfound riches. Whenever I enter a game room now, the other players can do nothing but seethe as the sheer volume of tokens I have forces the token counter table to stretch four pixels wider.
Plus, with that many tokens, I can now afford to give my Pogo avatar (they call ‘em “My Mini” icons) all sorts of expensive clothes, haircuts and accessories. I told you. New low.

If you’ll excuse me, I have to go into the priciest Hold ‘Em room and make 100,000 token bets regardless of whether I have a Full House or an 8 high. I haven’t felt like this much of a loser since I paid 80.00 for that
Candy Apple Kool-Aid. Enjoy your Saturday Night Thread.

Wow. You’re like the Whitney Houston of Pogo.
I’m gonna go see TMNT tonight! Yay!

Oh God… I played on Pogo about 7 years ago, but haven’t touched it since.
Guess I shouldn’t mention that there is now a Pogo game out for the DS, should I?

Well, I have to weigh in by saying that an undrinkable packet of Kool-Aid beats the pants off a fake poker game any day.
So, what’s everyone got planned for Easter? I’m going to Arizona with my girlfriend. Monday is also opening day for my lovable losers, the Brewers. I got the day off and requested a sub for my third grade class. First pitch will be thrown out around the time I would normally be starting science class. Yesh!!!!

Okay, so you know what’s really disturbing? There’s already somebody on Pogo named Jedoc. What are the odds? Oh, well. “Jedocesque” will probably intimidate people with less dynamic names into giving me their chips without a fight.
Hey, don’t judge me. For the last three years, I’ve spent five-hour night shifts at the library playing online games at the Zone. At least now I can waste time AND have a haggard hope of someday winning fifty bucks.

Yay! I am enjoying SNT from my hotel room in Michigan, drinking Michelob and FINALLY eating the new Doritos flavors! Life is great right now. I am quite enjoying my little rendezvous in the US of A.
I have an addictive personality, so I will not be going anywhere near that Pogo site.

Good God!
I didn’t think you could get any lower than the Marsh mellow fluff incident, I was wrong…
On the other hand, I wait with baited breath for when you again set the bar even lower and top this one.
The only way to correct this as I see it is to move all in on a 4 high card. If you win, it is now legit if not your Karma has been righted. Though of course your still out that sixty bucks. Can’t even use it to drink your sorrows away. Bummer.

I could as well see myself becoming addicted to a site like this. I don’t think I’ll even try until I am at work. I only have dial-up at home.
Easter this year is gonna be lame. My entire family has jetted off to different parts of the globe for Spring Break. I think the remaining three of us are gonna do the ham and church thing though.

Matt…my inner nerd refuses to believe that anyone with a Wii could ever stoop so low as to playing games on Pogo, let alone paying others to do it for them.
I’m going to be up for a while working on homework and on updating the website of my college “humor rag” (so dubbed by the other papers published here), so here’s hoping this is an interesting SNT.
And Thorzul and kb…my team is the Tigers. Since I’m 20 and they’ve been losing as long as I can remember - certainly as long as I’ve been following them, since elementary or middle school - last season was absolutely amazing. I’d also like to take contention with that “greatest of the Midwest teams,” but I’m sure we’ll settle that on the field. ;¬)

i think it’s pretty cool to be able to buy the points/tokens/levels like that. It’s like having a Game Genie for online games. And Matt, you’ve still got your job and less than 37 cats, so that’s pretty good. Not a low point at all!
Watched the first 3 Critters in the last few days…part 4 was actually gone when I was there last time, so I guess I’ll get that tmrw. The store has been doing a 5 for $5, which rocks.
Rock on SNT, rock on.

And I don’t feel quite so bad about the almost $30 I blew on the two-disc Special Edition copy of the musical “Easter Parade,” either. Gambling’s not my thing; I think I’d rather waste my money on replacing the stuff I taped in college instead.
I’m not sure what I’m doing for Easter yet; probably what I did last year, spending it with my uncle, stepsister, and biological father.

Finally! Something I can talk quasi-in-depth on! Oh yes, I am a daily visitor to Pogo. Granted, I’m a Word Whomp fiend, where tokens aren’t really in play, but rewarded for each round. My girlfriend actually got me turned on to this game, and after months and months of hitting up the site from home or from her laptop, I’ve amassed roughly 520,000 tokens.
I’m not a subscriber to the site, so I am missing out on a lot of the action, but just in the hour+ a day I waste there, I see at least a handful of people earning some real deal cash. So it can’t be all that bad.
(Ironically, K- just dragged me from the site just to throw in my two cents. Wait…or do I mean “coincidentally”? Eh, whatevah.

I had a roommate in college who was a fiend for Yahoo! Pinochle. Seriously, the guy had issues. Just about any given night of the week, I’d go to bed (drunk, typically) with him fervently pecking away at our computer’s keyboard and talking trash to his online opponents who he’d never actually meet in the flesh and, when I’d awaken the following morning, there he’d be right where I left him at our dorm-room’s computer looking like…well…looking like he’d been up all night chewing snuff and playing online pinochle. If you’re out there Steve-O, I hope you’re doing well and I hope that your online gaming habits have evolved so that you might be playing World of Warcraft or something nowadays. It was always easy for me to put up with your gaming habits and the odd hours they entailed simply because you were always so willing to put up with my penchant for Wild Turkey and the odd hours (and behavior) it entailed.
I apologize for my prolonged absence, fellow X-E faithful. I hope you’ll all have me back. Have I missed anything good?

I work for a Pogo competitor and let me let you, the customer base is roughly 90% mothers and grandmothers. On an unrelated note (sorry it’s a couple of threads late), I just won a “test” bag of mystery flavor Doritos on eBay last night. It’s all black and white and official looking and has “Flavor profile X-13D” printed on the front. The seller description said it’s a brand new unreleased flavor. I’ve never been so excited in my life. Hopefully it’s not just a 5 month old bag of one of the new “head to head” flavors.

KB,
I’ll gladly be your friendly rival, but you’ll have to get in line. My girlfriend is from Minnesota and is a Twins fan. She was even neighborhood friends with Joe Mauer when they were really little. The Twins were actually my surrogate team back in the day. Kirby was the man.

Posted by
Thorzul @ 03/31/2007 11:20 PM EST
Yeah honkykong I’ve kinda seen things like that before, there is this site I’ve done taste test surveys for. Like one was a plain box that said “oatmeal sample A” or something like that on it it was white with black writing with instant oatmeal packets in it. They were a full box of instant oatmeal packets. They were strawberries and cream. Then about a week later after I did a taste test of those I got a second one that was the same kind of box and everything but it was “oatmeal sample B” and I think I liked the first one better I don’t remember. But it was a kick I can’t imagine getting paid to taste test food. Some people get paid to eat stuff like Taco bell!! When I saw that on tv I decided that was my ultimate dream job, if you don’t do that for 30+ years then it would get boring. But maybe I could get a parttime job testing out ice cream and a parttime job doing the taco bell. Hmmmm.
Happy SNT for people that are working!!

I’m not a gambler so I wouldn’t go to pogo, plus I don’t want to add to the stereotype that housewives are the majority that visit.
Easter, man, I have to go to my Moms for lunch at 2 then go over to my In-laws at 5. I just know my Mom is going to be pissy cause we wont be visiting her long enough, and really it’s not that anyone wants to see me or the Husband it’s the child they only care about. You have never really felt rejection until you have a kid. I guess I should quit my bitching, I’m getting two dinners out of it.
Muppet Baby It sounds like your having fun! Nothing is better then going to the US and eating all the wonderful food! Might I suggest going to a Tops and buying Vitamin Water, sure it may be water but if it isn’t addictive. I like Dragonfruit the best and my Husband is all about the Lemonade. I stalk up on it everytime I go to the states. Is anyone else a fan?

Yes, I am having a great time!! There are currently 5 strangers in my hotel room and we are all having a good time (being anti-social to SNT)
Tops, eh? I will check it out…I also want to eat at Denny’s and/or a Taco Bell before I head back to Canada.

RE: Pogo. Never heard of it. Don’t want to get hooked, so I’ll stay away!
RE: Easter. Don’t know what I’m doing this year, since my Godparents (whom I normally have Easter dinner with) are in Germany right now. I guess I’ll figure it out next week. But next week is a long one, with Church on Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday morning.
Oh, and I just beat Twilight Princess. I’ve had it since Christmas, but I kept putting off beating it because. Well. I guess because I didn’t want it to end. Loved the ending. Music maybe wasn’t as great as it could have been, but the battle sequence was awesome. I’m glad I we have games like Zelda that make me feel like a kid again, full of wonder and facing a world of infinite possibilities…

It’s (techically) April Fool’s Day now, and [adult swim] has replaced its anime block with a marathon of Perfect Hair Forever, edited to look like a poorly taped fansub, complete with inaccurate dubtitles (one episode’s captions was literally the transcript of “Revenge of the Mooninites” from ATHF)

You know, now that you guys started talking about games, I realize that I did a pretty shameful thing this weekend too. I spent fifty bucks on the new expansion and the official downloadable content CD for Oblivion, even though I’ve had the game since launch and still haven’t taken a character all the way through the main quest. I’ve got a terrible, terrible case of re-roll disease, where you come up with a great new character concept in the middle of the game, go back to test it out, and never go back to your original character. So what do I need more content for if I haven’t even fully exploited the content that came with the original game? Sad.
It’s April 1st. Trust no one. Keep your damn heads down, and check the toilet seat. Good luck, everyone.

Every April Fool’s day I think about the time when I was about 11 or 12 and my friend called me up and announced that her family bought a pet pig. I just did not believe her in the least and kept on insisting that she was trying to pull an April Fool’s day joke on me. Later that day I went over to her house and there he was, a little pig they named Pumbaa. He’s still kickin around 14 years later.

i used to do some food testing, mostly for pizza hut and a company that handled different foods, mostly different types of chips and snacks. my favorite was when we tested jack daniels. from what i recall they just gave us a shot of jack and another brand, and asked us to compare. then had us sit in a little room for a while to make sure we weren’t tipsy before leaving.. it was still funny to me though. not a bad way to get a quick 20 bucks, but i got tired of the whole process after a while

What I was surprised to find out is that you could buy AND sell this currency on the homepage for real money. I went to an in-game “casino” and made 50 real dollars worth of the currency but I got greedy and then I lost it all. Then I got mad and deleted the program. How that isn’t considered online gambling, I don’t really know. I did feel stupid for all of that, however.

Fairly off-topic, but I thought you might find this little tid-bit pretty neat, Matt. I’ve been on a Stephen King kick these past few months, and since I’m nearly through The Stand, I looked it up on IMDB just to refresh the cast of the TV movie in my head, and saw that Mick Garris had directed it (along with the TV version of “The Shining” which just ended for us East-coasters) He also did “Desperation”
He’s also the writer behind the immortal “Hocus Pocus” But most importantly, he co-wrote your favorite Amazing Story “Go to the Head of the Class” Nifty, I thought.
And if anyone’s interested, Sci-fi is running a Stephen King marathon today. “The Langoliers” just started. Ah, there’s nothing like a pre-washed up Balki.

Yeah, I just finished watching the Shining. I had actually seen the TV movie before, and I saw the Kubrick one a few weeks ago. Though I like the Kurbrick one, I have to say the TV movie has a better story (and probably follows the book more, though I haven’t read that.).
Now I’m watching I, Robot while my Roomba (made by iRobot) vacuums.

There were some problems for a number of years with cancelling AOL. Most of these were at our Jacksonville and Albuquerque centers. Those guys ALL got fired. I ran a clean tight ship in Oklahoma city.

I joined the hoopla! kb was too short a name for them to accept so I went with my AIM, pilverkb. I have yet to try and play anything however.
I bet alot of us have posted loopy Bill, although that’s the first comment I have seen based soley on corn :) I prefer texting when I am out, and it’s great when you text to someone who is themselves out and they are really excited for the nonsense you have just poisoned their mind with.
Question: I am sure alot of us have pointed out this site to friends, but has aanyone ever turned a friend into a regular poster. I always wonder if anyone on here knows each other in real life.

Thanks KB. I tied one on for sure last night. I don’t know where I was going with the corn comment but it’s true. I do like corn on the cobb.
Does mustard go bad? I know it’s off the topic but I just ate mustard with a “best used by Oct. 2006″ date on it. I have a half eaten sandwich and an oh shit look on my face right now.

kb: If you call mon frere’s erratic posting schedule “regular” then yes. Me and The Colonel go way back.
We even have a wiki about it, according to Doho, but I still ain’t found that sucker

Okay, before he has a hissy-fit, notes:
*Mon frere as in Mallrats, not literal translation. We’re still figuring out who is who’s sidekick.
*He was here before me, he’s a relic of the days of the forum, and introduced me to X-E.
So blame him!

Mick Garris also did Riding the Bullet, which was on TBS, and did the miniseries version of The Shining, AND Sleepwalkers. Apparently he gets along with King pretty well. I haven’t seen Desperation yet, but I heard it was all right.
He’s also the director of Critters 2, and wrote *batteries not included, both of which rock.
I will say again, The Stand should be made into a three or four part feature release, a la LOTR or The Matrix. Television is just not the right medium for Stephen King. And I’m saying this as a true King fan. It just seems too limiting. That’s been my rant for years now…

Hey Matt, just heard about the rappers shooting it out outside the freakin’ KIDS CHOICE AWARDS! (Sponsored by Nick). Apparently mad they couldn’t get in. Wow. Way to prove your gangstaness you idiots. Popping a cap in the Nick Kid’s Choice Awards. Hope you were holed up playing Pogo.

TerrorClawsCole @ 04/01/2007 10:20 PM EDT
kidneyboy, Yeah, Mick Garris has done tons of TV work, the majority of the King mini-series. He seems to be the only one that’s willing to stay the closest to the novels. Although “Sleepwalkers” actually got a theatrical release, yet ask how many people remember that.
But I do agree with you about The Stand. They took more than a few liberties with the storyline. But ultimately, I wouldn’t trade that cast for a single living actor in the business today. If it were ever redone, I’d hate the shit out of it and condemn it to Hell the rest of my days. That’s a fact.

I take that back. We could use a better Randall Flagg. And maybe George Clooney as Larry. You know, that was George’s cousin playing Lloyd?
God, I’m a nerd.

Catsup,
thank you for recanting about Randall Flagg. Jamey Sheridan, who the fuck are you? Damn. But Molly Ringwald, yum yum. And Harold was great.
I also thought Rob Lowe was super, prob the best job in the show.

Definitely man. I also take back that Clooney as Larry claim. I don’t know what I was thinking. In no way now can I picture that. Wouldn’t want to.
Def yum on the Molly. Kudos to Lowe on his Nick, and M-O-O-N spells Dauber.

Matt, it’s okay. Don’t feel so bad. We all have our little vices. I am horrible because I’ll download twenty Yahoo games at a time and play them instead of the PC games that I actually pay money for. Go fig.
On another, nonrelated note, the boyfriend and I FINALLY got a Wii this weekend! Went to two different Wal-Marts, one at midnight and the other at six a.m. the next day, but we finally got lucky and got one. We’ve had the money since Christmas, so it’s about damn time. I haven’t played it too much becuase I was trying to get our WiFi dongle to work (it won’t and I’m angry), but I watched the boyfriend play. WarioWare is hilarious…the microgames crack me up. We also got Zelda, which I plan to dive into tonight when I get home from hell, er, work.
I’m actually having a small party with a couple of friends from work later this week to celebrate the Wii and let them all play it…we write about video games, so it’s only appropriate, haha. I have no idea how I’m going to fit six people around my 19″ TV in our tiny apartment without something getting broken or someone getting hurt, but it’s worth a shot. We’ve never actually had anyone over, so this should be interesting. And I’ll be giving them beer. I’m in serious trouble, aren’t I.

Your friendly neighborhood lapsed Baptist here, and every Easter, I go to our church and help hide the eggs. There will be a need for extra help this time, as the local Government Boarding School might be providing kids for the hunt this year. Considering the reputation of the little rats, we might need to ramp up security on egg location.
So, who enjoyed the TV presentation of the Aqua Teens Movie on [adult swim] last night?

Saturday night: PHF in backwards order, bad VHS subtitled version, all night.
Sunday night: First five minutes of ATHFCMFfT shown regular, then shrunk down with no sound, with animated banners calling attention to the tiny, tiny P-I-P. All that while the normal lineup went on as usual. The only one that surprised me was the lead singer from Cameo (Word Up, She’s Strange) shakin’ his codpiece to funk guitar riffs.

I knew they were never really going to show the Aqua Teen movie even before I realized it was supposed to air 4/1. It was cool seeing the first five minutes though.
Looks like Mick Garris put Christopher Lloyd in one of his Masters of Horror eps as well. I wasn’t aware he directed the Shining or the Desperation made-for-TVs, but I liked both. According to the thread from when Desperation aired, “I [thought] they did a pretty good job. Perlman’s all sorts of creepy. Also, Stephen Weber has aged really well. Tom Skerritt, not so much.” Apparently, I also already couldn’t wait for Grindhouse to come out, which is really kind of sad if I think about it too much. Still haven’t found any tickets for Thursday night either :/

Sure. Click my name.
How’s about What is the craziest/lamest thing you’ve ever spent way too much money on. This is of course based on other’s perception of the purchase moreso than yours. However, you may feel silly about it now, as well.
I paid $85 dollars for the complete set of MCR action figures.
I paid ~$400 total to get Final Fantasy XI up and running on a PS2.
Dollar amounts greatly appreciated in this one

I’ll finally admit that I was one of thosep oor saps that blew $80 on the Princess & Erin Beanie Babies back in ‘98. Shut up.
I paid actual money to see 28 days later in the movie theatre. Must have been like $5.50, which is what I should have been paid by hour to see it.
When I was kid, one of the times I got a hundred dollars, which wasn’t often and always a big part of my life, I pissed it all away slowly on fast food and pizza.

I spent ~$400 on all of Elvis Costello’s albums. In like the span of a month. I also bought all of AFI’s albums in a rush. Please don’t judge them on their later stuff, cause that honestly is shite.
“sub-question: is it in fact unfair to criticize a formerly great artist for his latter day sins–is it better to burn out or fade away?”
“So we all get old and then we can’t hack it anymore. Is that it?”
Costello actually got better, for a while. Spike, Mighty Like a Rose, and Brutal Youth are fantastical.

Ok, I saw TMNT tonight. My reaction: Good, but not good enough. The geek in me is happy, though. Not many people at the show, let alone little kids (the ones that were knew how to behave themselves, save for one, but even that one at least cheered at the right times, during the good parts)
I agree with not enough of Don & Michaelangelo, and the whole thing with April as a ninja…didn’t seem believable, even after 3 movies & 2 tv shows (live action one? what live action one?) Also, we could’ve seen more scenes with the monsters, but it was ok. Patrick Stewart is still awesome.
I paid 50 bucks for a Last Starfighter poster autographed by Lance Guest. I kind of wish it was a Jaws IV poster with the same autograph.

oh, also came with a metal gear solid action figure in box signed by todd macFarlan. not bAD for free!!
but the best AFI album is, i think, either “Answer that and stay fashionable” OR “black sails in the sunset” just curious As to which you’rs is!

Spending thaat much cashola on Sailor Moon dolls is only excessive if you’re a dude, MissJess. But my regrettible purchase happens to be a VHS copy of “Blair Witch.” Even though Myself, Little Brother, his Wife, and her Brother scraped together our pocket change to get it off the bargin rack, just so we could watch it, it ended up on my video shelf. Queasy-Cam(tm) + stoopid kids does not = viewing goodness, unless you also activate MST mode and add Dramamine and Ginger Ale to the mix. I wonder if there’s a RiffTrax for the film?
