I’m a sad, sad man.

Well, I've hit a new low. I think I will reflect on the events of today for years to come, forever associating them with me at my most rock-bottomnest, forever favorably comparing even the darkest days of the future to what transpired this afternoon. After today, I have nowhere to go but up. At least that's comforting.

It all started a few weeks ago when we were visiting with my mother, who among other unsavory things is a devout Pogo addict. Pogo, for the uninitiated, is an online game site where people with nothing better to do -- people numbering in the hundreds of thousands -- spend 24 hours a day playing online slot, card and puzzle games, building up useless tokens and praying to join the minuscule fraction of players who actually win real money from the beast.

As others sat around the table for coffee and whatever, I snuck onto her computer and gave Pogo a whirl. Indeed, it's an addictive site. From slot machines filled with oinking pig graphics to online realizations of everything from Scrabble to Vegas-style slot machines, it's mindblowingly mindless fun.

Today, I set up my own account, even going as far as paying the premium for the ad-less version of the site, which also features exclusive games. My favorite timewaster quickly became Texas Hold 'Em, which is played against real people for real Pogo tokens. Now, you can play on the low side, or you can go into the high roller rooms, where hands can get up to and over 100,000 tokens each. While it may seem surprising considering how many Pogo addicts have token counts numbering in the high millions, I found out quick that token-building takes a considerable amount of time -- much more time than I could ever afford to spend on Pogo Dawt Cawm. The poker stars of Pogo won't have me at their tables with my pitiful token count. Something had to be done.

So, I scoured the Internet, and sure enough, clever housewives have devised systems that, through some means that surely reflect poorly upon Pogo's terms of service, allow newbie players to purchase worthless Pogo tokens for real money. The short version of the story: I'm out 60 bucks for 10 million shiny new Pogo tokens.

That's right, my friends. It's kind of like paying one of your neighbors to come beat Zelda for you. I don't know how the person I paid did it exactly -- I had to grant her access to my account, and I believe she and her network of entrepreneurs sat in a high stakes poker room, playing the cards in her favor until my account clocked in at the paid-for token count. After an hour or two, she sent me an e-mail giving me the go-ahead to play away with my newfound riches. Whenever I enter a game room now, the other players can do nothing but seethe as the sheer volume of tokens I have forces the token counter table to stretch four pixels wider.

Plus, with that many tokens, I can now afford to give my Pogo avatar (they call 'em "My Mini" icons) all sorts of expensive clothes, haircuts and accessories. I told you. New low.

If you'll excuse me, I have to go into the priciest Hold 'Em room and make 100,000 token bets regardless of whether I have a Full House or an 8 high. I haven't felt like this much of a loser since I paid 80.00 for that Candy Apple Kool-Aid. Enjoy your Saturday Night Thread.

As far as spending money for the express purpose of playing dress-up with an online avatar- I’ve given too much money to IMVU for this purpose.

I work for a Pogo competitor and let me let you, the customer base is roughly 90% mothers and grandmothers. On an unrelated note (sorry it’s a couple of threads late), I just won a “test” bag of mystery flavor Doritos on eBay last night. It’s all black and white and official looking and has “Flavor profile X-13D” printed on the front. The seller description said it’s a brand new unreleased flavor. I’ve never been so excited in my life. Hopefully it’s not just a 5 month old bag of one of the new “head to head” flavors.

Guess I really should have posted that on the other thread. Apologies all around. Happy SNT!

KB,
I’ll gladly be your friendly rival, but you’ll have to get in line. My girlfriend is from Minnesota and is a Twins fan. She was even neighborhood friends with Joe Mauer when they were really little. The Twins were actually my surrogate team back in the day. Kirby was the man.

Yeah honkykong I’ve kinda seen things like that before, there is this site I’ve done taste test surveys for. Like one was a plain box that said “oatmeal sample A” or something like that on it it was white with black writing with instant oatmeal packets in it. They were a full box of instant oatmeal packets. They were strawberries and cream. Then about a week later after I did a taste test of those I got a second one that was the same kind of box and everything but it was “oatmeal sample B” and I think I liked the first one better I don’t remember. But it was a kick I can’t imagine getting paid to taste test food. Some people get paid to eat stuff like Taco bell!! When I saw that on tv I decided that was my ultimate dream job, if you don’t do that for 30+ years then it would get boring. But maybe I could get a parttime job testing out ice cream and a parttime job doing the taco bell. Hmmmm.

Happy SNT for people that are working!!

My boyfriend’s grandfather loved playing euchre on Pogo. When we visited over spring break, he excitedly told us about his lastest win and his Pogo buddies. He passed away last week. It makes me sad to think that his screename will never again be online.

I’m not a gambler so I wouldn’t go to pogo, plus I don’t want to add to the stereotype that housewives are the majority that visit.

Easter, man, I have to go to my Moms for lunch at 2 then go over to my In-laws at 5. I just know my Mom is going to be pissy cause we wont be visiting her long enough, and really it’s not that anyone wants to see me or the Husband it’s the child they only care about. You have never really felt rejection until you have a kid. I guess I should quit my bitching, I’m getting two dinners out of it.

Muppet Baby It sounds like your having fun! Nothing is better then going to the US and eating all the wonderful food! Might I suggest going to a Tops and buying Vitamin Water, sure it may be water but if it isn’t addictive. I like Dragonfruit the best and my Husband is all about the Lemonade. I stalk up on it everytime I go to the states. Is anyone else a fan?

Oh, Matt…

Chestnuts roasted by Rainbowfeet @ 04/01/2007 12:22 AM

IHAQ- Your name makes me think of IHOP, which I hope to visit before I leave the US…(it has ALWAYS made me think of IHOP and now that I have drank 5 Michelob- which we DON’T have in Canada- I feel ok in confessing this)

Yes, I am having a great time!! There are currently 5 strangers in my hotel room and we are all having a good time (being anti-social to SNT)

Tops, eh? I will check it out…I also want to eat at Denny’s and/or a Taco Bell before I head back to Canada.

RE: Pogo. Never heard of it. Don’t want to get hooked, so I’ll stay away! :)

RE: Easter. Don’t know what I’m doing this year, since my Godparents (whom I normally have Easter dinner with) are in Germany right now. I guess I’ll figure it out next week. But next week is a long one, with Church on Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday morning.

Oh, and I just beat Twilight Princess. I’ve had it since Christmas, but I kept putting off beating it because. Well. I guess because I didn’t want it to end. Loved the ending. Music maybe wasn’t as great as it could have been, but the battle sequence was awesome. I’m glad I we have games like Zelda that make me feel like a kid again, full of wonder and facing a world of infinite possibilities…

Happy SNT!

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 04/01/2007 12:31 AM

yeah, the final stage in Twilight Princess is excellent.-

Chestnuts roasted by Joker @ 04/01/2007 12:34 AM

Pfft, who needs Twlight Princess when you have Final Fantasy XII, n00bs :P

180 hours and counting. Fo realsies.

My Easter will consist of mass Peeps consumption. Since I hate ham, I convinced my mother to make lasagna, which I think will soak up the Peeps rather nicely. Also — Peeps Cake.

Monday I’m going to see Evanescence… I hope there’s lots of hot tattooed guys to oogle.

I cannot STAND coming back to my desk with a juice pouch with a fucked up and BENT straw end!!!! I’m thirsty NOW!

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 04/01/2007 1:02 AM

Muppet Baby- If there’s a Waffle House near you, go there instead of Denny’s! It’s the best restaurant in the universe.

Chestnuts roasted by consulatsunset @ 04/01/2007 1:03 AM

I actually have Twilight Princess sitting at home right now – I bought it after Christmas, but wasn’t able to finish it over break like I wanted to.

I think I’ll be using a good chunk of my summer to play through TP and Wind Waker. :)

I need to hit up stores on the day after Easter. Cheap Cadbury Eggs FTW!

It seems like every time I post lately there’s two or three posts that appear right before mine, between the time I start writing and the time my post displays.

Of course, having said that, it won’t happen again, just to spite me. >_>

Chestnuts roasted by Paul W. @ 04/01/2007 1:05 AM

Okay. It’s okay everyone. I got it. Used a tack.

Mmm, fruit punch.

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 04/01/2007 1:06 AM

I’m in San Francisco for yet another tattoo convention….with 4 horrible beers in me. They should have just labeled them “Beer”. I’ve been watching the 5 kids all day and NEED MORE BEER!!!

As far as Pogo goes, I’ve never been there. However I have a nasty habit of demo-ing online games and then downloading cracks for the ones I like. I don’t like to pay for stuff.

Mystie Oh! You should be here. I’m staying in the hotel that is sponsoring the convention and my entire floor is nothing but tattoo artists. YUM!

Chestnuts roasted by MissJess @ 04/01/2007 1:09 AM

So I’m watching “Freddy Vs. Jason” on Sci Fi.

My God, what idiot thought this would make a good movie?

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 04/01/2007 1:14 AM

FvJ has grown on me, simply as a byproduct of having seen it fourteen trillion times. I’d take F13 II-V and NOES I-V over it anyday, though.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 04/01/2007 1:49 AM

You wan ta play card wih da Gabmit?Den we play for tacos no?

Chestnuts roasted by Gambit @ 04/01/2007 2:11 AM

Well, I can finally say that I have completed my Fish Sandwich Quest! Sadly, neither A&W nor Roy Rogers had fish sandwiches when I went to check (but this is in part of poorly-informed websites) You can check it out by clicking the name.

It’s (techically) April Fool’s Day now, and [adult swim] has replaced its anime block with a marathon of Perfect Hair Forever, edited to look like a poorly taped fansub, complete with inaccurate dubtitles (one episode’s captions was literally the transcript of “Revenge of the Mooninites” from ATHF)

As for pogo…Sweeth Tooth is my favorite, and I played Phlinx when AOL users were able to play it for free. Then I stopped. I should start again.
