03/31/2007: I’m a sad, sad man.

Well, I’ve hit a new low. I think I will reflect on the events of today for years to come, forever associating them with me at my most rock-bottomnest, forever favorably comparing even the darkest days of the future to what transpired this afternoon. After today, I have nowhere to go but up. At least that’s comforting.

It all started a few weeks ago when we were visiting with my mother, who among other unsavory things is a devout Pogo addict. Pogo, for the uninitiated, is an online game site where people with nothing better to do — people numbering in the hundreds of thousands — spend 24 hours a day playing online slot, card and puzzle games, building up useless tokens and praying to join the minuscule fraction of players who actually win real money from the beast.

As others sat around the table for coffee and whatever, I snuck onto her computer and gave Pogo a whirl. Indeed, it’s an addictive site. From slot machines filled with oinking pig graphics to online realizations of everything from Scrabble to Vegas-style slot machines, it’s mindblowingly mindless fun.

Today, I set up my own account, even going as far as paying the premium for the ad-less version of the site, which also features exclusive games. My favorite timewaster quickly became Texas Hold ‘Em, which is played against real people for real Pogo tokens. Now, you can play on the low side, or you can go into the high roller rooms, where hands can get up to and over 100,000 tokens each. While it may seem surprising considering how many Pogo addicts have token counts numbering in the high millions, I found out quick that token-building takes a considerable amount of time — much more time than I could ever afford to spend on Pogo Dawt Cawm. The poker stars of Pogo won’t have me at their tables with my pitiful token count. Something had to be done.

So, I scoured the Internet, and sure enough, clever housewives have devised systems that, through some means that surely reflect poorly upon Pogo’s terms of service, allow newbie players to purchase worthless Pogo tokens for real money. The short version of the story: I’m out 60 bucks for 10 million shiny new Pogo tokens.

That’s right, my friends. It’s kind of like paying one of your neighbors to come beat Zelda for you. I don’t know how the person I paid did it exactly — I had to grant her access to my account, and I believe she and her network of entrepreneurs sat in a high stakes poker room, playing the cards in her favor until my account clocked in at the paid-for token count. After an hour or two, she sent me an e-mail giving me the go-ahead to play away with my newfound riches. Whenever I enter a game room now, the other players can do nothing but seethe as the sheer volume of tokens I have forces the token counter table to stretch four pixels wider.

Plus, with that many tokens, I can now afford to give my Pogo avatar (they call ‘em “My Mini” icons) all sorts of expensive clothes, haircuts and accessories. I told you. New low.

If you’ll excuse me, I have to go into the priciest Hold ‘Em room and make 100,000 token bets regardless of whether I have a Full House or an 8 high. I haven’t felt like this much of a loser since I paid 80.00 for that Candy Apple Kool-Aid. Enjoy your Saturday Night Thread.

Its ok Matt, if you get too adicted, we could all have a blog-intervention or something, it could be fun!

I just wanted to say hey. I was hardcore all about this site back in ‘00-’01 but have recently re-discovered it. I have no Easter plans yet, but I’ll more than likely spend it with the in-laws. There just haven’t been any official announcements yet.

Invader Norbert did you try a mcsurf n’ turf deluxe?

You know, now that you guys started talking about games, I realize that I did a pretty shameful thing this weekend too. I spent fifty bucks on the new expansion and the official downloadable content CD for Oblivion, even though I’ve had the game since launch and still haven’t taken a character all the way through the main quest. I’ve got a terrible, terrible case of re-roll disease, where you come up with a great new character concept in the middle of the game, go back to test it out, and never go back to your original character. So what do I need more content for if I haven’t even fully exploited the content that came with the original game? Sad.

It’s April 1st. Trust no one. Keep your damn heads down, and check the toilet seat. Good luck, everyone.

That’s right it is April 1st, I should do somthing to the Husband, he’ll be home from work sometime later today. Hmm

Every April Fool’s day I think about the time when I was about 11 or 12 and my friend called me up and announced that her family bought a pet pig. I just did not believe her in the least and kept on insisting that she was trying to pull an April Fool’s day joke on me. Later that day I went over to her house and there he was, a little pig they named Pumbaa. He’s still kickin around 14 years later.

I’m double posting because I can dammit! Muppet Baby IHOP is great, I went there on my honeymoon. You know it took me about a good 3 years to realize that IHOP stood for Intertanational House of Pancakes. I also agree with consulatsunset, skip going to a Denny’s and go to Waffle House if at all possible.

i was surprised at the freddy vs jason backlash, i thought it was cool for what it was, and on opening night the packed theater i was at seemed to love it. i realized a couple years later on the net a lot of people didn’t feel the same way

i used to do some food testing, mostly for pizza hut and a company that handled different foods, mostly different types of chips and snacks. my favorite was when we tested jack daniels. from what i recall they just gave us a shot of jack and another brand, and asked us to compare. then had us sit in a little room for a while to make sure we weren’t tipsy before leaving.. it was still funny to me though. not a bad way to get a quick 20 bucks, but i got tired of the whole process after a while

Sixty dollars American Matt? Christ, at least spend it on something worth it… like action figures.

FvJ was a good movie! Of course, they could make a movie of Freddy and Jason playing crib and I would like it. As for this Pogo site, I’ve never heard of it. I don’t think I’ll be looking for it either, I’m already hopelessly addicted to those silly Webkinz games. Which is embarrassing enough.

Happy April Fools’ Day! I haven’t gotten tricked yet, but I am very gullible, so we will see.

Random question for anyone who wants to chime in: Me, my friend, and my brother are going to NYC in May for a week. Anybody have recommendations on what to do/see? (Especially Memorial Day and the following week – May 26 – June 2 is when we will be there.) I know there are tons of travel books and websites, which I am in the process of checking out, but I just want a “can’t miss” list. By the way, we are staying on St. Mark’s Place.

I used to play pogo, but I inevitably forget that it exists. And due to my amount of homework, I now have to pretend that nobody reminded me of it. Ohhh, word whomp…

Ghosted by Jemmy @ 04/01/2007 1:49 PM EDT

Never heard of Pogo, but I was seriously into Slingo and Mah-Jong not too long ago. I got over it though.

Freddy vs. Jason is a good movie. Can’t wait for whoever is in the sequel. Watched “The Descent” on DVD last night. Great movie until the weird ending.

I tried Second Life once for a few days, and paid 5 dollars for 1,000 of the currency they use. What I was surprised to find out is that you could buy AND sell this currency on the homepage for real money. I went to an in-game “casino” and made 50 real dollars worth of the currency but I got greedy and then I lost it all. Then I got mad and deleted the program. How that isn’t considered online gambling, I don’t really know. I did feel stupid for all of that, however.

Fairly off-topic, but I thought you might find this little tid-bit pretty neat, Matt. I’ve been on a Stephen King kick these past few months, and since I’m nearly through The Stand, I looked it up on IMDB just to refresh the cast of the TV movie in my head, and saw that Mick Garris had directed it (along with the TV version of “The Shining” which just ended for us East-coasters) He also did “Desperation”

He’s also the writer behind the immortal “Hocus Pocus” But most importantly, he co-wrote your favorite Amazing Story “Go to the Head of the Class” Nifty, I thought.

And if anyone’s interested, Sci-fi is running a Stephen King marathon today. “The Langoliers” just started. Ah, there’s nothing like a pre-washed up Balki.

Ghosted by ColonelCatsup @ 04/01/2007 5:10 PM EDT

ColonelCatsup
Yeah, I just finished watching the Shining. I had actually seen the TV movie before, and I saw the Kubrick one a few weeks ago. Though I like the Kurbrick one, I have to say the TV movie has a better story (and probably follows the book more, though I haven’t read that.).

Now I’m watching I, Robot while my Roomba (made by iRobot) vacuums.

I used to be a Customer Service Manager for America Online and whenever there was a problem with the POGO site all these little old ladies and compulsive gamblers would FREAKOUT!

Good Luck on trying to cancel that premium member you bought, EASports doesn’t make that an easy thing.

Ghosted by MrAtomic @ 04/01/2007 6:48 PM EDT

You mean like the time I cancelled AOL. Ended up having to curse at the guy to make him do it.

Then I got a letter that said “We’re so glad that you decided to stay with us” on the back of which was the form I had to fill out to FINALIZE MY CANCELATION.

AOL

Ghosted by K- @ 04/01/2007 7:21 PM EDT

There were some problems for a number of years with cancelling AOL. Most of these were at our Jacksonville and Albuquerque centers. Those guys ALL got fired. I ran a clean tight ship in Oklahoma city.

I joined the hoopla! kb was too short a name for them to accept so I went with my AIM, pilverkb. I have yet to try and play anything however.
I bet alot of us have posted loopy Bill, although that’s the first comment I have seen based soley on corn :) I prefer texting when I am out, and it’s great when you text to someone who is themselves out and they are really excited for the nonsense you have just poisoned their mind with.
Question: I am sure alot of us have pointed out this site to friends, but has aanyone ever turned a friend into a regular poster. I always wonder if anyone on here knows each other in real life.

Thanks KB. I tied one on for sure last night. I don’t know where I was going with the corn comment but it’s true. I do like corn on the cobb.

Does mustard go bad? I know it’s off the topic but I just ate mustard with a “best used by Oct. 2006″ date on it. I have a half eaten sandwich and an oh shit look on my face right now.

Okay, before he has a hissy-fit, notes:

*Mon frere as in Mallrats, not literal translation. We’re still figuring out who is who’s sidekick.

*He was here before me, he’s a relic of the days of the forum, and introduced me to X-E.

So blame him!

Mick Garris also did Riding the Bullet, which was on TBS, and did the miniseries version of The Shining, AND Sleepwalkers. Apparently he gets along with King pretty well. I haven’t seen Desperation yet, but I heard it was all right.

He’s also the director of Critters 2, and wrote *batteries not included, both of which rock.

I will say again, The Stand should be made into a three or four part feature release, a la LOTR or The Matrix. Television is just not the right medium for Stephen King. And I’m saying this as a true King fan. It just seems too limiting. That’s been my rant for years now…

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 04/01/2007 9:30 PM EDT

Hey Matt, just heard about the rappers shooting it out outside the freakin’ KIDS CHOICE AWARDS! (Sponsored by Nick). Apparently mad they couldn’t get in. Wow. Way to prove your gangstaness you idiots. Popping a cap in the Nick Kid’s Choice Awards. Hope you were holed up playing Pogo.

Ghosted by TerrorClawsCole @ 04/01/2007 10:20 PM EDT

kidneyboy, Yeah, Mick Garris has done tons of TV work, the majority of the King mini-series. He seems to be the only one that’s willing to stay the closest to the novels. Although “Sleepwalkers” actually got a theatrical release, yet ask how many people remember that.

But I do agree with you about The Stand. They took more than a few liberties with the storyline. But ultimately, I wouldn’t trade that cast for a single living actor in the business today. If it were ever redone, I’d hate the shit out of it and condemn it to Hell the rest of my days. That’s a fact.

Ghosted by ColonelCatsup @ 04/02/2007 1:21 AM EDT

I take that back. We could use a better Randall Flagg. And maybe George Clooney as Larry. You know, that was George’s cousin playing Lloyd?

God, I’m a nerd.

thank you for recanting about Randall Flagg. Jamey Sheridan, who the fuck are you? Damn. But Molly Ringwald, yum yum. And Harold was great.
I also thought Rob Lowe was super, prob the best job in the show.

Definitely man. I also take back that Clooney as Larry claim. I don’t know what I was thinking. In no way now can I picture that. Wouldn’t want to.

Def yum on the Molly. Kudos to Lowe on his Nick, and M-O-O-N spells Dauber.

Matt, it’s okay. Don’t feel so bad. We all have our little vices. I am horrible because I’ll download twenty Yahoo games at a time and play them instead of the PC games that I actually pay money for. Go fig.

On another, nonrelated note, the boyfriend and I FINALLY got a Wii this weekend! Went to two different Wal-Marts, one at midnight and the other at six a.m. the next day, but we finally got lucky and got one. We’ve had the money since Christmas, so it’s about damn time. I haven’t played it too much becuase I was trying to get our WiFi dongle to work (it won’t and I’m angry), but I watched the boyfriend play. WarioWare is hilarious…the microgames crack me up. We also got Zelda, which I plan to dive into tonight when I get home from hell, er, work.

I’m actually having a small party with a couple of friends from work later this week to celebrate the Wii and let them all play it…we write about video games, so it’s only appropriate, haha. I have no idea how I’m going to fit six people around my 19″ TV in our tiny apartment without something getting broken or someone getting hurt, but it’s worth a shot. We’ve never actually had anyone over, so this should be interesting. And I’ll be giving them beer. I’m in serious trouble, aren’t I.

Your friendly neighborhood lapsed Baptist here, and every Easter, I go to our church and help hide the eggs. There will be a need for extra help this time, as the local Government Boarding School might be providing kids for the hunt this year. Considering the reputation of the little rats, we might need to ramp up security on egg location.

So, who enjoyed the TV presentation of the Aqua Teens Movie on [adult swim] last night?
