03/17/2007: Breyers Bubble Yum Ice Cream!

I just got back from my trip to Neptune.  Swank.  It took me a while to remember that Pluto got the boot, so technically, I was vacationing at the furthest possible distance from our apartment in the entire solar system.  Though there wasn’t much to do there outside of making funny helium voices, it was a relaxing trip, and I’d go again in a heartbeat.  Had to stop at the grocery store before coming home to pick up cat food, and I’m glad I did, because it bookended my vacation with a big container full of new Bubble Yum ice cream.

Yes, from Breyers, it’s the official Bubble Yum bubble gum ice cream flavor.  While it would’ve likely been much easier to transform Bubble Yum into some kind of sherbet, I must applaud the incredible effort that had to go into making it ice cream.

Packaged in a blindingly pink box that’s way too loud to ignore, it was pretty embarrassing to wander around the store with this shit in my cart.  Much like you can’t walk the streets with a cute puppy without everyone stopping you to chat about it, you simply cannot go food shopping quietly with a box of Bubble Yum ice cream in your grocery wagon.  People were all over it.  I had to explain what it was and where to find it at least five times to nosy fellow shoppers, and even when we were on the checkout line, the cashlady pulled out her patented headshake of disbelief before performing the price scan.  Was it worth it?  Not really.  Stuff sucks.

I will give Bubble Yum ice cream credit; it really does taste like Bubble Yum.  It’s just that gum isn’t conducive to becoming a premiere ice cream flavor.  It’s kinda medicine-like.  Also odd is the fact that instead of chocolate chips or little puffs of cookie dough, it’s got tiny pieces of bubble gum sprinkled throughout.  Why is this odd?  Because the gum pieces are in no way, shape or form like Bubble Yum.  They’re like bootleg Chiclets. And because they’re frozen, they’re rock hard and fully capable of chipping a tooth.  What are you supposed to do with these when you’re eating the ice cream?  Spit ‘em in a side bowl and save for later?  I cang understang.

Plus, since I am the only person above the age of six who would desire Breyers Bubble Yum ice cream, I can’t help but wonder if parents are really going to want to serve their children something so rife with pellets that technically shouldn’t be swallowed.  The whole thing’s a big failure in execution, but I do admit to feeling a certain sense of euphoria when I open my freezer door and get to have five-second staring contests with a box of gum-flavored ice cream.

Damn, that box is pink.

I’ve never liked bubble gum ice cream, because even if the gum isn’t rock-hard, you’re still stuck chewing it or spitting it out while you try to eat the rest of the ice cream.  It isn’t worth that effort to me.

I’ve been seeing this crap at the top, back corner of the freezers in Giant for the past two weeks.  And everytime I point and stare in disbelief.  I knew it was only a matter of time before I could read about it on here rather than attempt to swallow it myself.  Thanks, Matt.

BTW, I found NEW packages of Mango and Pina-Pinapple KoolAid in some grocery store in New Orleans.  Rejoice!!

In my younger and more vulnerable years I tried some bubble gum ice cream at Baskin Robbins.  I truly expected some kind of divine glory to explode in my mouth. It was blue goddamn ice cream! Of course, as said about this Breyers stuff, there isn’t much sense in making gum into an ice cream. I was probably less than ten years old, but I remember thinking as I ate my ice cream, why in the world did I choose the bubble gum flavor? They have eleventy dozens flavors. Goddamn

Ghosted by mr.skeleton @ 03/17/2007 10:26 PM EST

At my coffee shop we have bubble gum ice cream. When it is ordered we hand out a little dixie cup to save the gum in.  I cant eat the stuff mostly cause i dont like the flavor of bubble gum unless its actual gum.
and spitting out gum to chew later sounds funny.
i am not drinking the green beer tonight,  i”m watching bball at a friends (in a college neighborhood and i just got to watch someone puke right in front of me–yay for not being young and stupid) and posting from my cell phone, hence the terrible puncuation.
Wow i just rambled some nonsense.  I’m going to go rejoin the people. happt snt to everyone!

Tried that stuff over the summer, and I totally agree that it sucks.  The only time bubblegum works with Ice cream is in the eyeballs of a novelty ice cream pop from your local ice cream man.

In an unrelated topic, i just realized that Jimmy Lee from the Double Dragon Movie is teh Chairman from Iron Chef America.

i always debate buying this kind everytime i decide to purchase ice cream. and now, i will never ever consider again, i sometimes like bubble gum, but it’s gotta be good like real good. and stefangrey, that is the greatest realization of the 21st century, i am a better person for knowing that.

St. Patty’s Day is here…yes, I’m wearing green, you just can’t see it through the monitor.

Since NY area will not have Shamrock Shakes, I decided to settle with Checker’s Irish Cream shake, which, while tasting more like Irish Coffee, is pretty good nonetheless.

I also need only 3 more Fish Sandwiches to complete my quest: Roy Rogers, A&W, and Arthur Treachers (the’re cobranded with Nathans, easy to find). Long John Silvers is ok, not the best, but good.

As a vegan, I really don’t spend much time inspecting ice cream packages. Does Breyers Ice Cream (I so want to put an apostrophe in “Bryers”) always have the brand name shoved twice on the front of the tub or carto or box or whatever it’s called? Maybe they put big, clear writing at the top so that seniors will be able to tell what brand of bubble gum ice cream they’re buying and the smaller, more stylish writing at the bottom for the hip young kids who want pictures of leaves to be present on their food containers. Or something.

Ghosted by Tougi @ 03/17/2007 10:49 PM EST

Umpteenth! (kidding) I, for one, never got into chewing bubble gum that much as a kid.  I mean sure, I liked gumballs as much as any other kid, but I never got into the pink flavor of bubble gum for some reason.  When they came out with fruit flavors of Bubble Yum and Hubba Bubba, etc., I liked those, but for some reason not the pink one - therefor I probably will give the Breyer’s flavor a pass.

Regarding Irish drink concoctions, I confess a liking for the Ben & Jerry’s Irish Cream shake, but it’s not a seasonal thing, available year-round, so I guess it doesn’t count.

Why isnt blueberry ice cream made by any company???  And I dont mean blueberry cheese cake flavor, or any other weird combo.  Just straight up, natural blueberry ice cream. Its my fave, and the only way I can get it is if I go home in the summer, pick some blueberries, and make the damn ice cream myself. *sigh*  Has anyone here ever made their own ice cream?  We had a hand crank churn we used in the winter to make our own ice cream.

Ghosted by Phayke @ 03/17/2007 11:49 PM EST

It’s like those ice cream bars you could get from the ice cream truck–the ones with the gumball nose.  The tricky thing was that you couldn’t start with the gum nose because then the ice cream would melt as you chewed the gum, but if you started with the ice cream, you had to hold the gum nose while you ate the ice cream holding it in place.  It was rather annoying and one of the reasons I don’t like the ice cream man anymore.

None of the local grocery stores have Stephen Colbert’s ice cream yet.  Obviously they hate both America and freedom.

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 03/18/2007 8:16 AM EST

Not surprised that it sucks.
Personally, I have become a resurgent baseball card collector.  Right now I’m collecting the 2007 Topps Heritage set that comes with a huge slab o’ gum in each pack.  It’s protected in a cellophane wrapper (or, more accurately, the cards are protected from it).  There are several of them at the bottom of my wastebasket.

So, did anybody have a gum stash like I did when they were a kid?  Mine was an empty Whitman’s Sampler box.  It once held a weird concoction that I remember being a toothpaste tube that contained watermelon flavored, purple and yellow striped gum that was somehow tied into Slimer from the Ghostbusters.  Somebody verify this to help me not go crazy.

Ghosted by Thorzul @ 03/18/2007 8:36 AM EST

Very odd that they have those fish aquarium style gum pellets. Although the flavor would suck either way, they should have had novelty cartoon character ice cream bar eyeball-stle gumballs. That way, you can eat around them, and pick them out as you go. Then they can thaw a little, and when you’re done with all of your ice cream you can finish everything off with a nice gum chewing session.

Oh well–whoever said it first is right. Bubble gum flavor just isn’t that good. When buying Bubble Yum, I would always get grape or watermelon or even chocolate mint over the regular flavor. Heck, even having a Juicy Fruit or Big Red flavor of ice cream would be more interesting than this.

Ghosted by Casual Jeff @ 03/18/2007 8:51 AM EST

Little pieces of gum in ice cream equals having to sift through the carton to get to the stuff you can actually eat. Maybe I’m the only one, but I actually want to digest ice cream and all ice creamy elements.

Then again, I’m not big fan of gum-flavoured ice cream in general. I don’t even go for mint flavours because they remind me too much of toothpaste.

Seacrest Fudge n Nuts,Paula Rum Raisin Mudslide, Taylor’s Licks, Chock Full O’Reuben, Fudgetasia
These are great! I couldn’t think of anything for Reuben or Fantasia. I thought Fantasia would have a fruity sherbet flavor for some reason. Fudge is so much easier.
P.S. I wasn’t trying to be dirty with Cherry Underwood but on closer examination…

I had a gum reserve. Very disgusting after awhile.
I forgot to end the CRYSTAL PEPSI story. The kid asked me what it was about and the only thing I could think of was, “It was the 90’s. Anything was possible.”

Sorry I’m a bit late to the ice cream party, but as one of the only people in Camden County who wasn’t quaffing green beer last night (liquor of any color and I don’t get along), I spent most of last night stuck at work listening to two teenage boys whose combined IQ probably didn’t equal their ages. Seriously, I’ve had better conversations with the mechanical stuffed panda I got at a thrift shop.

I’ve seen Breyers Bubble Gum Ice Cream many times at work. I’ve even sold a few. I’ve never tried it, though. First of all, I HATE pink, especially that kill-your-eyes shade, so that’s a turn off right there. Second, I thought from the moment I saw it there could be nothing good in pink Bubble Gum ice cream. I’ve had bubble gum yogurt before (Penn Maid kids’ yogurt - don’t know if they still make it) and it wasn’t great. Bubble gum was made to be in little chewable pellets, not frozen sugar cream.

In addition, to give Breyers credit, they DO make my all-time favorite ice cream flavor, but it’s something a bit more palatable - cherry vanilla. I love that stuff. Sweet and sort of velvety, with really big cherry chunks.

I tried a Shamrock Shake for the first time this year.  I am addicted.  Why didn’t anyone tell me they were so darn good?  I’m sad they will be leaving soon.

Oh, and on another note…
I like the sound of Sandy Randy Banana Chunk and Daughtry Delight

What other hot (or not so hot) franchises do you guys think would benefit from their own ice cream line?  Here are some of my picks:

Dancing With the Stars - Could have little candy dancers mixed within the ice cream.  I’m imagining them looking something akin to Flintstones vitamins.  Man, those were good.

Nintendo Wii - The “Wiice Cream” would be incredibly hard to find, as they would only make a couple of shipments to grocery stores while claiming they are “working as fast as they can” to continue production.

Peeps - Deliciously mini marshmallow peeps in chocolate fudge/vanilla swirled ice cream.  A perfect combination.

Vin Diesel - Why not?

Those are a few off the top of my head.  Anyone else?

My old boyfriend remembers his mom doing the same thing to him as a kid. For what it’s worth, the reason there’s something more like bootleg chicklets in such ice cream is because they know you aren’t supposed to eat real bubblegum, so that’s their replacement. I wonder if maybe my mom didn’t know this, hence the ban on the stuff.

Brandon:  That was my favorite, too!  I always got Pink Panther.

Had a crazy busy weekend.  Went to my first Hash and about killed my feet.  Blisters = not fun.  But I burned some calories… then packed them back on with cheap beer and Chinese food.  I know, right… an Irish girl eating Chinese food on St. Patrick’s Day.  Oh well.

Went to a Coldstone Creamery today, man that’s some good ice cream.

And yay I’m coming to New York in May, so I’ve gotta research and find a bunch of cool places to drag my fiance to!

Sorry for the double post (I waited a few hours… promise!) but is the Cadbury McFlurry available in the states?  I’m being told it’s only in the UK and I don’t know where those of you who mentioned it in the last (last) thread live. :)

Those Coldstone Creamery guys are fucking whacked. They started singing the one time I was in there. If you’re gonna go, make sure no one puts money in the tip jar.

*shudders*

Not because they don’t do a good job, but because it mandates them to form this amalgam Barber Shop quartet of HORROR!

Yeah, they started singing when I was in the restroom there, they were singing something to the tune of the Flintstones theme song. Pretty lame. Not as cool as this barbeque place that used to be around here. They had a bell, and any time you rang it they all had to go YEEEE-HAAA. That was fun.

Sad to hear that the ice cream wasn’t good; I’ve seen it and thought about trying it because I’ve always enjoyed bubble gum ice cream.

On the subject of shakes and St Patrick’s Day: I really want to try Chick-Fil-A’s new Mint Cookies and Cream shakes.  They brought it out in time for Saturday, and luckily it’s stickin’ around until June. :)

Matt — Hehe, you actually went to Neptune of your own violition.  And not because you own a house there like I do.  Well, I hope you enjoyed our fair town.  You obviously didn’t get arrested because the Chief of Police would have told me.  We’re tight like that — my sister is on township committee.

Anyway, the little ice cream place up the way from me when I was a kid used to cell bubble gum ice cream by the bucketload — but there’s was vanilla ice cream with fruity chiclets in it.  We’d eat the ice cream and push all the gum into the sides of our mouth for later.  Decidedly less scary than that stuff you bought.

Americone Dream was actually spotted at my local deli.  We picked up a pint and gave it a shot.  It’s just ok.  Nothing special.  I think the problem lies with the vanilla ice cream.  It is too overwhelming and the other ingredients get lost in it’s white ocean.  Or maybe Ben & Jerry’s vanilla just tastes weird.

I, too, thought 300 was a little dull.  I had such high expectations and was a bit let down.  I’ll probably like it more in future viewings though.  I can’t believe that the guy that played Xerxes is  Paulo on “Lost”.  Total transformation.

When I was little, there was some variety of bubble gum ice cream that I loved, and in fact, I continued to enjoy it far longer than one would expect. I think I liked it because the ice cream didnt taste that much like bubble gum, it was much sweeter, almost more like coton candy. And it had chiclet-like chunks, only they weren’t real gum. They were, I think, all the stuff that goes in to gum except the rubber, so it tasted like gum, but you could safely swallow it. I think they probably had some rubber substitute to make it chewy, but yeah. That stuff was tasty.

As far as ice cream goes, show some love for the Springfield Creamery in Eugene, Oregon.  Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters were frequent guests, and there was always more beer in the freezers than ice cream.

300 - I thought it was really good.  Not great, but really good.  I’m a Frank Miller fan, though and read 300 when it was released as a monthly back in 1997 or 1998.

Americone Dream - Picked this up last week.  It tasted good.  I liked the chocolate covered waffle cone bits.  But it’s not like I took a bite and started weeping.  It was good.

You know what the only good bubble gum ice cream is:  blue bubblegum.  The kind with no chunks of frozen cheapass “gum” in it.  And blue.  That shit is delicious.

Being lactose intolerant any ice cream I eat turns me into a one man drumline. So, I must limit my intake, for your sake.
I have been to cold stone and tried all the Edy’s, and Variety of supermarket ice creams.
But, when I crave real ice cream… when I REALLY want ice cream. I hit Carvel.
Some of the Carvel stores here in NY are as old as dirt.  The machines are old. You cannot duplicate the broken-in flavor that these machines produce.  Go in get a big ass cone roll it in chocolate crunchies (whatever the F they are not a sprinkle, not a cookie) and your good to go. As you eat your cone walk past the display and see all the oddities that people eschewed.. strawberry dipped  flying saucers and frozen banana’s in chocolate on a stick (which looked like something else entirely different. See all the birthday cakes, football shaped cakes and cookiepussi in another freezer. And now and then a fudgie the whale.

Now excuse me while I book a weekend at Mount Airy Lodge in the Poconos.

Not having anything to do with anything… I managed to piss off my one friend that has burned copies of like, everything. Sucks cause I really needed a graphic editing program. And it is Spring Break so I was hoping to get some games from him. Oh well…

On topic: I remember begging my dad to buy Bubble Gum soda a long time ago. When you’re a kid, stuff like that sounds soooo cool at the time. Then I started drinking it and the stuff tasted worse than the Crypt Keeper’s insides. But, you know, as a kid, you have to sort of stick with your story and make sure you know that it was worth them spending the money. So, after an hour or so with the bottle only being a gulp or two empty, he asked if I was going to drink the rest of it, and I replied “Yeah, I’m waiting to finish it.”

I was a stupid child.

Been w/o internet since Reno…guess I didn’t miss too much?

Anyway, I have never been able to stomach the taste of bubble gum flavored ice cream, but loved the challenge of forcing myself to bear with the flavor in order to collect frozen pieces of gum in my cheeks.  As a kid I loved to defrost them in my mouth and see how much gum I actually ended up with.

Spent St. Patty’s day on top of a mountain in Oregon, with a bunch of other Irish people wearing green, and drank green beer and Irish Whiskey.  Some mild debauchery ensued.  Ended the night singing “Men are evil, girl power!” songs and dancing in the rain with two good friends.  Good times.

Oh, and I AM CURRENTLY CRASHING WITH A PEPSI COLLECTOR.  This means I have seen and touched every single pepsi product featured in the Dead Sodas article…’cept for Fire and Ice….doesn’t have those two…but she has a few that I have never ever seen before.  Made me smile when I saw the raging Razzberry can and immediately thought of X-E.  This is a long post now….I’m out.

I’m sad.  Calling different McDonald’s with no luck finding a Shamrock Shake.  2 McDonald’s actually had no clue what I was talking about.  That’s not a good sign.  :(

I’ve seen this ice cream and have almost picked it up a couple times, but the fact that I could care a less about bubble gum flavored anything keeps me from taking the $2.69 plunge.

I do want to try the Skittles, Jolly Rancher, or LifeSavers or whatever the hell that fruity ice cream (maybe sherbert?) is, I can’t remember, all I know is it looks like neapolitan ice cream except with 5 or 6 rows of awesomeness.  Come to think of it, I’m pretty sure it’s sherbert.

I wish Push-Pops were still Flintstones themed.

Do ice cream trucks still sell “Looney Tunes Surprise” pops?  Anybody remember those?  There were blue and red with a blue plastic stick that had a flat part with a random looney tunes character on it. If you got Wile E Coyote (i think, maybe another character) on the plastic stick flap thing in the center of the pop, you got a free one next time the ice cream man came back around.

On another note, Cadbury Creme McFlurry???  omg…  And I thought the Chick-Fil-A Mint Cookies & Creme Shake was temptation!  But I don’t think we get them here in the US.  That doesn’t surprise me though, because Cadbury’s not as big in the US as it seems to be in Canada and other countries.  Most people probably only recognize the name from the Easter candy eggs.

ZigZag I can’t believe you mentioned Inca Cola- Yesterday, I went to my friends house, because I wanted a share of all the stuff hes throwing out. Mostly records, MAD magazines, some books, old Movie Maniacs figures, The Pac-Man Board Game , with yellow ghosts, and an Inca Kola shirt. Of course, its a childrens small, but I’m still pretty proud of it.

“la bebida del Peru”…indeed. :)

Personally I remember liking bubble gum ice cream, though I haven’t had it for about 8 years. It was always blue, I liked that. And that pink box is furthering this weird craving for Bubble Tape I’ve been having lately.

I’ve actually been going to the local latin market recently, I’ll look out for that Inca Kola next time. Jones Sodas Rock! Blue Bubblegum & Cream Soda are by far my favorite flavors they’ve ever made.

And on my Fish Sandwhich quest, I need only 2 more places: Arthur Treachers & Roy Rogers. Went to the only A&W/KFC within reasonable driving distance of my house to find out that they did NOT sell their Fish Sandwich. I think perhaps the website said “Select Locations” which means anything not Co-branded with something (as this A&W was more like an A&W Express to the more dominant KFC). I tried a regular cheeseburger, it’s nothing to write home about. It was basically combining a patty & bun of a Big Mac with the toppings of a Wendy’s burger. Did try a straight draft cup of their Root Beer though and tastes much better compared to a fountain/plastic bottle version of it.

I tried it last night and you’re right, it’s really good!  I hope it stays around a while.  I don’t mind the other Jazz flavors…  The strawberries & creme is unique, but it’s almost too sweet for me, which is odd ’cause most things are never too sweet for me.  I appreciate it though, because it reminds me of the old Strawberry Burst Pepsi from so long ago…  Now if only they’d come out with a raspberries & creme Pepsi, I’d be set!

I hear tell that during Passover, if you keep an eye out, you can find reg’lar American Coca-Cola with cane sugar by checking for a yellow band on the label.  Something about not consuming corn during the holiday.

Recently, I bought two board games at a garage sale.  The Mad Magazine game, and a Pac-Man card game.  The Mad game is a kind of reverse Monopoly, first one to lose all his/her money wins.  Pac-Man involves simple math to try to gain 100 points first, Pac being the plus, Clyde is minus, and a Pac/Clyde card is Multiplication.  And, you can play the Subtraction cards on your opponent.  I like board games that let you mess with the other players directly.

I find I’m usually able to tell when CGI artists haven’t had enough practice or training in how muscles, bone, and skin move, and giving things weight.  Bugged me a bit in some parts of Spider-man (particularly after Mary Jane has been lowered to the tugboat and he turns to leave; and some of the swinging), but in Spider-man 2 I could tell the artists had a FAR better handle on it.  Unfortunately it bugged me so much right off the bat in the first TMNT trailer I won’t be going to it myself.  Saving my gift cards for Spider-man 3 and Fantastic Four 2.

No Transformers for me, either, but that’s because the designs are hideous, I dislike Bay’s films, and the script is tedious crap that’s been peddled before.  If it gets more G1 stuff on the shelves, tho, I won’t mind.

Ugh, this brings back memories I spent a year and a half burying.  Memories of when I worked in my college’s dining hall, scooping ice cream in the dessert room.  The bane of my existance there was bubblegum ice cream, which I hate with a passion, but plenty of other students seem to love.  I could not stand the stuff, so I always positioned it in the cooler in such a way that it was easy for me not to look at it (and hopefully hard for others to notice it).  If I actually had to serve the stuff, I would immediately rinse off my gloves afterwards, no matter how long the line was (the lights in the dessert room made my hands too sweaty to change gloves in under five minutes, especially if they were the plastic kind, not the latex ones).  And heaven help the person who wanted it in a waffle cone…

I love Bubble Yum Ice cream!  I ate half a tub of it last night after I got home from the bars… tasty stuff.

I love the breyers bubble yum. it’s like the maggie moo’s bubble gum ice cream w/o the high price or vast amounts of blue dye. im 36. call me a kid if u want. breyers, listen to ur sales figures, not this board. btw, u can actually swallow the gum after a couple chews. there’s barely any “gum rubber” in it.
