X-E's 2008 Halloween Countdown is capable of soul-eating.

03/03/2007: Primal Rage Figgaz.

I don’t believe I’ve ever played any of the Primal Rage video games, so when I first stumbled onto the corresponding toyline in 1994, it was all Greek.  But, it was a good kind of Greek, like a kalamata olive, or Jesse Katsopolis.

As every character in the game was some form of monkey-on-steroids or dinosaur, every figure in the toy collection was worth having.  Figures based on video games can be pretty sucky and barebones, but a lot of thought went into these.  From the accessories the figures came with down to the way they were packaged, Primal Rage toys were well worth the fifty cents most stores charged, because damn, these things were hideously unpopular and traveled to the clearance racks faster than the speed of light.

As evidenced by the crushed package, this guy’s been laying on the bottom of a cramped storage box for over a decade.  It’s “Blizzard,” my absolute favorite figure in the series, largely due to Blizzard being the line’s answer to the mythological Yeti.  Blizzard was one of the good guys — a “Virtuous Beast,” who fought for the side of right along with three random dinosaur dudes.  Together they battled against the “Destructive Dinos,” which despite the name, featured a bad guy by the name of “Chaos” who looked like the twin monkey brother of Blizzard, only this time with a red and green Christmas-themed color scheme.  Long sentence.

Each of the figures came with a tiny “Mini-Primal” humanoid, and here’s where it gets interesting.  With Blizzard and the other good guys, these humans were said to be “followers,” but if you bought a bad guy, they were victims, to be chomped, eaten and otherwise brutalized.  This makes me wish Blizzard was a bad guy, because it’s going to suck exiting official canon when I make him bite the little orange fucker in two.

The primary figures were about six inches tall, but there was also the “Super Rage” series, which had the same figures scaled up to double that size.  The bigger figures were unbelievably cool but really expensive, and I could never seem to find them on clearance.  Just last year, the giant-sized version of Blizzard was repurposed and packaged with a Ninja Turtle figure in some weird two-pack.  Check it out here.  I don’t know why I don’t own that set.  I’ve got three copies of Event Horizon on DVD, but not that?  I don’t even like Event Horizon.  Two hours of crap just to hear Lawrence Fishburne say “this place is a tooooomb” ain’t the kind of tradeoff I’m into.

Happy SNT.

Oh god, primal rage the games suck so hard.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 03/03/2007 8:56 PM EST

Dang, Raph vs. Yeti?
I consider them both two of the toughest beings in my cosmology. I don’t know who I think would win.

I do agree that the game sucked hard.
I think I liked the Home Improvement game more.

Home Improvement the video game for SNES had better dinosaurs than Primal Rage…
FYI, if anyone is interested Direct TV’s channel 101 has been playing Beside you in time, the new Nine inch nails DVD from their live tour. I saw them during this tour myself and I know at least a couple others on here saying they did too. It comes on again at midnight and at 6 in the morning.

Speaking of Jesse Katsopolis, anyone remember when his last name was Cochran?  Apparently, that wasn’t Greek enough for Mr. Stamos though.  Yet I’m surprised he didn’t object to his stupid catchphrases and obsession with the Brian Wilson-less Beach Boys.

Primal Rage was all the…um…rage for about 15 minutes.  Anybody remember Killer Instinct?  Nothing has the staying power of Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter II though.

Ghosted by BUCKLY! @ 03/03/2007 9:08 PM EST

I heard he had it changed because his father died and wanted to honor him by Greeking it up.
He was also the backup drummer for the Beach Boys, you know.

Ghosted by Somethin' Funny @ 03/03/2007 9:12 PM EST

Yes, I am aware of his side gig with the “Beach Boys”.  I hesitate to call them by that name because once a band loses is lead, it is hard to take them seriously again. Today’s Journey and Styx and shallow shells of their original selves.

Here is something I’ve been wondering…why did we get 329 versions of Street Fighter II instead of just stepping it up to Street Fighter 3?

Ghosted by BUCKLY! @ 03/03/2007 9:20 PM EST

Only on X-E do we get reference to Uncle Jesse AND a glorified Yeti action figure…all in the same place.

I’ve lurked for far too long - it’s time for me to come out and say it: Happy SNT to all!

Umaro for the Yeti World Title Championship. Don’t question it.

Killer Instinct. Why am I having flashbacks to impossibly pointy female secondary sex organs?

Because it’s cheaper to update an arcade with some minor upgrades than to sell an entire new game. The arcade was so fierce at the time, being at the top like SF2 was, there was no time to make a brand new game. Even when they brought out the CSP2 arcades, they rushed out Super Street Fighter because of the competition Mortal Kombat began to give them and then later upgraded that game to ssf2t, which was the state it should have been to begin with.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 03/03/2007 9:26 PM EST

Man, this thread is a bit traumatic.  I loved Primal Rage when I was a kid.  It might not have had the best gameplay dynamics, but dammit, it had fifty-foot dinosaurs beating the crap out of farting monkeys.  Plus, it was freeplay at the nickel arcade in Amarillo, so every time one of my friends had a birthday we’d spend the last hours of our arcade trip formulating ludicrously complex Primal Rage tournaments after we’d blown all our nickels on T-Mek and Prop Cycle and all the rip-off ticket games that let you spend ten bucks on a spider ring and a foam glider.  Good times.

Ghosted by Jedoc @ 03/03/2007 9:26 PM EST

Hey, what was the game on NES where you were a giant lizard or monkey and you’d smash the buildings and get points for eating people? That game ruled.

Ahh that Primal Rage. Never have played it, don’t really care to. But Yeti toys bought on the cheap I can totally get behind. And I love that you admit owning three copies of Event Horizon. I still remember the Event Horizon reference you made in July’s dandy Sectaurs article. I daresay they’re not the exact same version? One is on VHS, one is a regular DVD, and one is a special edition DVD?

Fucking YEEESSS.

Primal Rage figures are the number 5 most influential factor in the childhood development.

Exposure to gore FTW.

Fire-breathing Tyrannosaurs FTW.

Eating people FTW.

Thanks.

Dude, I don’t even have three copies of the Matrix Trilogy.

I do have 3 copies of American Idiot, 2 copies of The Black Parade, and 4 copies of So Long, Astoria.

American Idiot has 2 different editions, as does Black Parade. But why the hell do I have 4 SL, As?

Only have vague memories of seeing “Primal Rage” on shelves, and I don’t think we ever played it. Those figures ARE cool, though.

It’s a good day for seeing cool figures. I was doing a sort-of cross between job hunting and browsing in Center City Philadelphia today. Since I’m looking for a job in bookstores (I figure it would be a slight step up from working in a grocery store), I naturally had to browse in them. When you’re a music-a-holic and a bookworm, it just happens. I didn’t have any luck with books (that Keith Moon biography was interesting but awfully pricy), I did see some cool anime action figures for shows I’d mostly never heard of and likely every manga currently on the market, including mangas for “Kingdom Hearts” I was THIS close to buying.

I also took advantage of the delights of big cities - namely, small stores and random restaraunts tucked into random corners. I bought four records (80s Billy Joel, The Monkees, the original cast album for the 1979 musical “They’re Playing Our Song,” and a 70s album for 30s singers Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy) and barely managed to slip into a nice little pizza place for some heavenly veggie-topped slices right before the place closed. I didn’t know cities went to sleep so early.

Yaaaaaaaay update!

Ghosted by grinman @ 03/03/2007 10:13 PM EST

I could roll with a Sora figure. I’d want Kairi too. That was the reason I didn’t buy that Squall figure I saw once online: no Rinoa :(

Don’t kid yourself, if I saw any of those in a store I’d bite in a nanosecond.
I still need my Pete Wentz doll, but going into a Hot Topic just makes me feel dirty.

Ghosted by K- @ 03/03/2007 10:21 PM EST

I’ve never played any of the games, but like our Matt, I had the toys. They’re all displayed in my room but I don’t know any of their names. I have Blizzard, a grey and read gorilla, a red and green gorilla, the orange raptor thing and my favorite, the green and blue, venom spitting, cobra like, dinosaur kinda like those ones in Jurassic Park. Turns out that that particular one is a broad. Thankfully I didn’t know this when I was five for surely the coolness of this figure would have diminished in my young, sexist mind. I usually dressed the figure up in some sort of clothing, often a strange one piece made from an old sock. He (she) would always be some crazy, mad scientist or general. The type of villain that didn’t get their hands dirty but had their underlings do the dirty work instead. I would often pit him (her) against the superfreinds or some other similarly scaled toyline. Ahh, good times.

Ghosted by Darth Poop @ 03/03/2007 10:25 PM EST

Hey, BUCKLY!, when you say “original,” exacty what do you mean? Journey’s been around in some form or another for more than 30 years, and I don’t think they’ve gone more than twenty minutes in all that time without changing the lineup. Schon’s alway’s been good, but I would say no member of Journey has stood out more than Steve Perry, who didn’t join the band until a few years after its formation.

Which is not to say that the current bands are more than shells of what they once were. Seriously, DeYoung is Styx.

Ghosted by Tougi @ 03/03/2007 10:26 PM EST

Primal Rage kicked ass at the arcade.  The game itself was kind of a lower tier fighting game, so I never played enough to get good.  Kicking some ass with a huge ass dinosaur for like ten minutes was enough for me.  Apparently the last boss was supposed to be nigh-impossible.

Happy Saturday, everybody! Welcome to the SNT, Egg.
Bigfoot made the cover of the Weekly World News this week. Prehistoric Bigfoot, actually.
I now crave tyropita, thanks very much. Oh, and speaking of Greeks, I finally got ahold of a copy of Frank Miller’s 300. Have a pretty good feeling the movie’s going to be awesome. And then it’s just a few weeks ’til Grindhouse! And Reno 911!: Miami was hilarious. Yay for good movies!
Yay Saturday!

I was never one to be good at any video game (maybe MILLIPEDE) but I liked PRIMAL RAGE. Sure, it was no STREET FIGHTER, MORTAL KOMBAT, or even KILLER INSTINCT but IT HAD DINOSAURS!

Speaking of RAMPAGE, I played that game non-stop at the arcade but something has always bothered me. WAS THERE ANY WAY TO ACTUALLY WIN THAT GAME?? COULD YOU AVOID LOSING YOUR MONSTER-NESS?? I always thought that if I just ate enough people, but I don’t think anything prolonged the inevitable, did it? HELP ME X-E!!

Rampage for NES could in fact be beat. I don’t know about any other version.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 03/03/2007 10:52 PM EST

Tougi I guess I mean the lineups when they hit big.  Yes, that means Journey with Steve Perry and Styx with Dennis DeYoung.  Also, Skynyrd with Ronnie Van Zant.  I’m sure you get my point.  The creative center of the band still needs to be there for me to care.  (Genesis is a tough call though because both Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins were successful frontmen.)

Still searching for Shamrock Shake…

Primal Rage, it sucked, but it was the good kind of suck, you know…so bad it was good? Armadon & Vertigo were my favorites, and they made kickass action figures. An Armadon figure in a crushed box survived in my KB for a good # of years before he was finally bought sometime around 2004 or 5.

Clayfighter…that really takes me back. I’m one of the lucky ones who played every version of the game: Clayfighter, Clayfighter Tournament Edition (Blockbuster Exclusive I think), Clayfighter 2, Clayfighter 63 1/3, Clayfighter: Sculpter’s Cut (definately a Blockbuster exclusive)

I liked 63 1/3 the best, even though Sculptor’s cut had more characters, it was a rush job (the highly anticipated High Five only had 6 moves). There were the returning characters of Frosty & Blob, not to mention the intro of Dr. Kiln (said to be in Clayfighter 2, but I don’t think you ever fought him), and updates of several Clayfighter 1 characters, like Ickybod Clay, Bonker, and Taffy, not to mention cameos by both Earthworm Jim AND Boogerman.

I haven’t even gone out to look for Shamrock Shakes yet. I really need to stop drinking Cherry Coke Zero and watching Adam Sandler movies and get the fuck out.

Aw, man! Primal Rage! The only good thing about that game was the fact that the cabinet screamed “Raaaaaaaage!” in attract mode. Other than that, it was mostly the bane of many a summer trip to Waterslide World.

On the same video game tick, I’m spending my Saturday hooked to the Wii, attempting to beat Everything or Nothing, Donkey Kong, and Twilight Princess. Yay, generational game leaps!

Ghosted by Declan Dempsey @ 03/04/2007 12:20 AM EST

I used to think Primal Rage was a fun game.  I guess it was because I pretty much sucked at fighting games, and this one let you play as DINOSAURS!  Dinosaurs that were worshipped by humans.

Seriously..DINOSAURS!!!

We used to play Primal Rage at my local bowling alley when we were sick of actually bowling–hey I’m a fat guy, I like bowling :P

Same bowling alley that Allen Iverson threw a chair at the pregnant woman in. For realsies. That fucker.

I used to love the arcade version of Primal Rage, with Talon (the velociraptor) being my fave.  Never really got into home consoles much (tho I’d like a Wii).

The whole ‘virtuous/evil’ thing was kind of tacked on later when they started getting into comics and toys.  I always found it pretty stupid, since in the game all the characters are worshipped, and all eat the pinkies for additional power.  The objective, IIRC, was to conquer as many lands and thus gain as many followers as possible.  Yummy pinkies!

Ghosted by Moony @ 03/04/2007 1:28 AM EST

For some inane reason, I can recite the 1997 action figure commercial by heart.

“Get ready to ERUPT into a PRIMAL RAGE!
But BE WARNED!
These guys don’t just KICK butt, they SLAM IT, CRUSH IT, AND TRASH IT!
Four tasty FOLLOWER FIGURES take a bite out of their killer appetites!” (shows plastic caveman being eaten by plastic monster)
“Now even more PRIMAL RAGE is in your hands!
PRIMAL RAGE action figures, only from BANDAI!”

Ghosted by Mars @ 03/04/2007 1:36 AM EST

More fond memories here of Primal Rage agree with Jedoc about having it for a nickel(before our arcade raised it to a quarter) and ups to Invader Norbert for “it was bad in a good way”.

I’ve spent my evening watching a womens college basketball game had a great time.

Already got my first Shamrock shake, not a good idea when I still have four hours of factory work ahead of me.

Ghosted by mrjayberry @ 03/04/2007 1:41 AM EST

I never really liked PRimal Rage, or at least never got into it.  The only fighters I really got into were the first two Mortal Kombats, on Gameboy!  Seriously.

I agree about todays Journey and Styx being shadow’s of their former selves.  About Synyrd, there is no doubt.  Ronnie was the heart and soul of that band.

One band that’s still kicking, and doing it fairly well, IMO, would be The Allman Brothers Band  They still rock it hardcore.

HAppy SNT, rockstars!

To all you people who found Shamrock Shakes by now…where are you finding them?! Damn, I’m obessed with looking for this, I even blogged about it, with hardly any luck so far (it’s only been a day, but still…)

What I did today? Lots, the frat sponsers one of those Adopt A Highway things in honor of a frat bro that killed, and since 3/3 would’ve been his 24th bday, lots of people helped out, and then we went back to his parent’s place for the annual pizza get-together/pledging antics, only consisting of putting hot sauce on pizza for unsuspecting pledges (you have no clue how well this works)

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 03/04/2007 1:59 AM EST

Invader Norbert, sorry for your pain we only have a 1/2 hour lunch so are stuck with limited options. One of these options is a McDonalds that had the Shamrock shakes like clockwork on March 1st. I live in Boise Idaho so it will probably won’t help much.

Matthew, please make more stories with action figures. Those are my favourite. Especially when they involve giant blue yetis.

DO YOU SEE WHERE I AM GOING WITH THIS

Ghosted by Evin @ 03/04/2007 5:01 AM EST

Primal Rage did indeed have the Golden Shower move. Chaos would pee on his downed opponents. It was removed from the SNES version, I think.

And to the person that said someone told them the end boss was impossible, I think that person must have been mistaken or meant something else, because I don’t think PR had an end boss. I think that they were going to put one in for a later release of the arcade game but never did.

After reading some of the comments here, and then looking on the web for more information, I was reminded that the arcade version of PR is on the second Midway collection for PS2. So, I had me some Primal Ragin’, tv style.

I’d like to see Uncle Jessie versus The Yeti. It would make just as much sense as Raphael versus The Yeti.

I never tried Primal Rage, partly because I didn’t like the look of the game. The backgrounds were too vibrant and gave me headaches whenver I’d watch others play. The feeling I had back then is the same feeling I have now when I’m playing or watching a 3-D game with a jerky camera. I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets bothered by that.

Ghosted by Dr. Acula @ 03/04/2007 8:26 AM EST

danny, I was going to try it out last night (Rampage for Wii) and report back for you, but I got sucked into catching up on Lost and Heroes instead, so I’ll check it now. I didn’t play a ton of the old school versions though, so my opinion might not be worth all that much. I can report that Sonic and the Secret Rings is darn cool, and I actually did play me some Sonic B in the D.
Do comments with italics go in the approval queue or something?

Clayfighter is a completely underrated fighting game.  Great theme song along with goofy characters.

As for Rampage in any form, I would play those games for about an hour, then get really bored and turn it off.  There is just so much of smashing the same buildings and eating people before even that gets boring.  I’ll even say that this is one of those classics that I think is overrated.

Let’s do a survey: Is there any popular video games out there that you never quite understood the appeal of?  For me, it was Rampage and the original Starfox.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 03/04/2007 5:05 PM EST

I never understood the appeal behind Dynasty Warriors. “Let’s hit Square 5 million times!!” But I understand that every game has its fans, for the most part.

Primal Rage! Oh, I had fond memories of that. Never found the figures, though.

But one thing I do remember about the game…if you tried to do a certain combination of moves too many times in a row, the game wouldn’t let you and a picture of a cheese would appear at the top of the screen XD

Does Blizzard have a baboon ass? It would be cool if he did. It would also be cool if he wore jeans because he was self conscious about his baboon ass and if the Destructive Dinos would mention it….oh yeah. That’s when the “rage” would kick in. If they went with that storyline, who knows? Primal Rage would probably be another Super Mario.

Hmmm. overated video games??
for me it would have to DEFINETLY be the Mortal Kombat Series, never understood the appeal of those games, ESPECIALLY the later ones, like appocalypse(the new one i think) but then again the only ‘fighting’ series i ever enjoyed was Street Fighter…
well actually, those dragonballZ ‘BUDOKON’(yeah i know, i suck at spelling, let the rocks fly) games are pretty addictive, i think the appeal of those games was the abbility to ‘transform’ into more bad-ass characters, like pokemon, but without the cuteness.

Today, I was GOOD AT MY JOB because I knew that Alex Garland wrote ‘the Beach’ and because I knew where the Hunter S. Thompson books were….I am a happy girl.

I actually loved the raw brutality of Primal Rage, and Killer Instinct.  Still, Street Fighter II is and forever will be my best/favorite fighting game.  I could kick the asses not only of BOYS, but of OLDER BOYS. I rocked.

On a completely unrelated topic: I know that one should not formulate an opinion until all the data is in but The Winner is about as unfunny as I thought it would be. My greatest suspicion was that it was going to be a GET A LIFE ripoff. Hmmm, looks PRETTY close so far. Also, I wouldn’t lead off with an O.J. Simpson joke. Not very fresh material

However, I would like to be Seth McFarlane. Have one success on a mildly funny ripoff and then sell 2 more shows to FOX. Not a bad gig.

Ah, Primal Rage.  When it came to fighting games the only one I had any extended interest in was Mortal Kombat II, but Primal Rage intrigued me as a kid because of the conflicting feelings it aroused: I was horrified by its apocalyptic post-meteor environment and at the same time drawn by the notion of being a gigantic prehistoric creature who could choose to eat tiny humans at any given time and still be worshipped by the survivors.  This is why I believe the game was really a DSM-IV screening tool.

And Rampage?  Awesome.  The goodwill from playing it on the NES is so strong I don’t care how many crappy follow-ups Midway creates, I’ll still play ‘em.

Shamrock Shakes can be found for sure at the Lacey, WA (next to Olympia) McD’s on Yelm Highway.  Got a couple already, delicious!

As for games I never got the appeal of, I vote for Kingdom Hearts.  I like a good action RPG, and loved the concept (especially Tron world in part 2), but the control and camera in that game was crap!  Unplayable in my opinion.  I would also add a second for Madden.  The Sega 2k games were way better.  Every Madden game feels like it was not ready to be released. Even the menus feel all jittery and buggy.  Like they can’t load properly.  The SEGA games always felt smooth.

Heh, I own that. Bought it when I was like eight. Got the other one too, “Chaos”. That one comes with a stick and a skull.  I can’t remember what I did with the humans, though I’m sure their somewhere.

I always thought Primal Rage looked so awesome when I saw it in Nintendo Power, but when I played it on a Midway compilation for GameCube, yeah it was pretty shitty.

Muppet Baby, you’re reminding me of that new-job feel. Good times.

Killer Instinct figures would’ve been pretty sweet. Recently I’ve, oddly, come to imagine that Fulgore would wear adidas Gigarides.

As for an over-rated video game…I want to say Balloon Kid for the Game Boy…I guess its not popular, I’m just wondering why the hell my brother bought it.

And Umaro? Fucking right.

Primal Rage is awesome. They were making a second one but it never came out. I used to love playing that at “Tilt”, our local arcade, because the graphics were crazy good for the time and the fatalities were killer.

I never understood Joust (the 2600 version) and for years I thought the premise was that you were a bird that ran into walls. It wasn’t until high school that my queerbait ex informed me you were supposed to avoid hitting walls.

I never understood the appeal of Resident Evil. Cheesy voice acting aside, the “cinematic” camera angles and pivot-mount-jammed-up-the-rectum controls made Tomb Raider feel intuitive by comparison. I was always too frustrated by them to be scared. Of course, both Resident Evil and Tomb Raider have finally addressed their control issues and become much better because of it.

As for Primal Rage…never liked it that much. The dinosaur gimmick couldn’t hide the fact that it was just another cheap knock-off of Mortal Kombat, which wasn’t that good of a game to begin with. Give me Street Fighter or Soul Calibur any day of the week.

But they weren’t nearly as cheesy as some of the games that didn’t make the cut:

We dodged a bullet there.

Primal Rage?  I can name two gimmicks for kids of the past that put it to shame.
1.  Pocket Rockers.  Remember these god-awful toy pseudo-barbie doll-like walkman wanna-bees with the treasonous CCR-ripoff compilation theme song playing in the background of the commercial (down on the corner…out in the street…pocket rockers are playing…hear the music, feel the beat).  And for all of you who still can’t stop laughing after hearing the name, these are NOT the kind of “pocket rockers” you find in a porn store.
2.  Heart-2-Heart Bears.  Teddy bears with beating hearts, need I explain more.  *BONUS*  Can anyone sing the lyrics to the heart-2-heart bears commercial?

Action figures based on an obscure NES game notable only for inspiring a hilarious Flash toon character and playing like crap? I’m thinkin’…no.

Ghosted by TB Tabby @ 03/05/2007 6:05 AM EST

Its not asking a whore’s fortune to make them.  Besides, how obscure and tasteless could they be when you consider that Capt. Lou Albano played Mario in a cheesy after school show looking like he fell off the Narcotics Anoynomous wagon.  And hey, Capt. Lou stumbles and almost falls during his dance in the closing credits of every show, yet wveryone applauds that eyesore of endeavor like the Pope just gave birth!

I don’t think he’s actually stumbling and nearly falling, it always looked to me like he did his big finale pose a second early and then tried to do the pose again, on top of itself when he realized they needed an extra second of footage.

How about JD Roth (he ages less than Dick Clark does) hosting GamePro on Saturday morning.  The SWAT segment contained the codes that were on par with hints out of the intruction manual.  But my favorite swipe at video game shows was delivered by David Spade on the Showbiz Show last year.  “For all of you peons living in your momma’s basement, he’s a code for you.  With your other hand thats not on the controller: up, down, up, down repeat.”

So let’s see, that’s My Chemical Romance and Final Fantasy.

Oh, heh, even though I’m not a fan of FF (I don’t even have any Playstation or else I’d try one), I wouldn’t dare put it on the same level of My Chemical Romance, in which the less anyone talks about that one…the better.

Muppet Baby:  Congratulations on your new job.  I almost got to work in a bookstore once.  As it turned out, though, I just ended up working at Hastings, which is merely an oversized movie rental joint that happens to have books in one corner.

I can’t really make a judgement on Final Fantasy one way or another, since I’ve only played through FFI and halfway through FFII before the garage sale cartridge died a horrible death.  Sorry, 80% of XE.  I’ve failed you.  But insofar as the survey, I can’t help but see the appeal of a series which includes gun-swords, so there you go.

I guess the games I just don’t get are the “pure” FPSs.  I can sneak around in Deus Ex or hack turrets in System Shock 2 for days, but I can never get past the first few levels in Unreal or Halo without feeling like I’m doing chores.  Of course, in my opinion, any FPS can be directly judged by the quality of its sniper rifle, and my subsequent ability to bust a cap in some fool’s dome from three hundred paces.  Take that, random UNATCO dude by the docks.

When I took a job at KB back in ‘98, one of my first purchases was the deluxe Primal Rage Diablo ‘cuz it looked like a pretty badass Devil Dinosaur figure. It was $10, which looking back, seems kinda pricey (even with my employee discount taking off $2.50).

Big Lots is supposed to have $2 Peeps flip-flops on sale, but I called my local one and they only have like 5 million pairs of socks. Ghosted by K- @ 03/06/2007 2:16 AM EST

K-, I was just responding to your idea about Umaro for Yeti World Title Championship. Show I was, “in the know”, y’know?

FF III/VI became this incredible, mystic thing for me, that formed this cornerstone of my childhood, which is really weird, because I’ve barely ever actually played it. In any case, Slam Shuffle, from Zozo, is the shit. “Do-dah-doooo”..yeah.

What about peeps now? Does anyone else really wanna go buy a bunch and set some on fire…like roasting marshmallows. For some reason I think that’d be really good. Anyone know?

Doho, I might have to agree with you too. I always liked second player having the blue…scheme, I guess. Like in Mario Kart, those balloons…

I’m on this SMB 3 kick right now. And the Super Mario Bros. Super Show was awesome, but I hated always missing the Mario cartoons, and getting stuck with Zelda. I don’t know, I guess I just didn’t like it.

Ghosted by Tutsuro @ 03/06/2007 2:25 AM EST

I’m gonna get flamed for this one, but honestly, I can’t stand Mario Bros. games anymore. I played the original NES version so many times and it was cool back then, but now… not so much. It’s all the same thing, or at least looks like it is, and I just don’t see the appeal anymore. :? Sorry.

I also don’t ever remember playing Primal Rage, though the name sounds familiar.

Whoever mentioned the Heart to Heart Bear earlier - I totally still have mine, and she still works. :D Don’t know the theme song though, unfortunately.

I need more to look forward to besides Adult Swim and Saturdays I’m usually a wee too drunk to type. Or make sense. But who am I to suggest change.

By the way my annual Veteran review was yesterday and I was asked where was my last school attendance. I told the gov. employee I was in pilot training in FL before I was hired. Rampage for NES sucked for one reason, after playing that SOB through for almost 6 hours without any saves me and my friend finally beat the game and all they say on a black screen is “congratulations” WTF!

This brings us back to a discussion we had a while ago. The topic was the tradeoff between gameplay and story. Some have both and are monuments of gaming because of it. Some only have story and would be better off as movies, while others have amazing gameplay and little story.

Rampage certainly has gameplay with little story, as a fair amount of NES–and other same generation system–games had.

All you base are belong to us. :P

A couple of years ago, there was a great conversation on the blog about the superiority of Luigi over Mario. I posted all the comments into an e-mail and sent it to my husband, because he and I feel the same way about that. We both prefer Luigi, but I’ve always been partial to “sidekicks”. My Christmas and birthday lists as a kid tended to have Whitneys, Mikos, and Danas, but rarely Barbies. I always felt like Barbie’s friends had more personality. Maybe that’s because they were always brunette, and I therefore concluded they had more depth (these biases are the reason I always wished I was brunette and not blonde.)

When we play Mario games with multiple character choices, we never pick Mario. It’s like going to Baskin Robbins and getting vanilla. You can play Mario anytime, but how often can you play Toad and Toadette (our personal favorites)?

By the way, SMB 3 is hands down my favorite NES game of all time. I know that’s unoriginal, but even now I could spend an afternoon playing that and be completely happy, 8-bit graphics and all. If you’re like me, you have a favorite world that you can’t wait to get to (I like world 5, with that cool castle that serves as a bridge between the two clouds. I think it’s great that when you get to the second cloud, you can still see a tiny version of the first one in the background. I also like the world where you can get into the little boat and float to the outer islands where there is nothing but games and Mushroom houses. I think it’s world 3 (?)) As far as SMB 2 goes (as defined by the US market), talk about games I just never got… I can’t believe I traded Marble Madness for that! (It was unintentional. My cousin lent a couple of games and I lent him Marble Madness in return, and then he must have forgotten because before I saw him again, I heard he’d gotten a new system and sold his NES and all of his games. Grrr…)

Yes. in the post that hasn’t shown yet.

I basically talked about the “tradeoff” between story and gameplay.

Some games have little story and great gameplay.
Some games have amazing story and horrible gameplay
(these are better off as movies, some would argue)
And then some games have both, and are amazing for it.

That was all I said.

I have a funny story about the cigarettes in MGS for PS1.  My buddy had been playing it for hours, and he is the type of player that never saves his game; therefore he has gotten mega-pissed at having to start over many times.  Anyways, he was going through some very hard levels for a few hours, and had just barely survived a huge shootout with a bunch of guards and was hiding inside an enclosed air duct next to a gas main.  His health meter was blinking red, and he was going through his inventory when I spotted the cigarettes.  Me being the kind of “bad video game spectator suggestions”, I said “hey, smoke a cigarette!”.  Well, a couple seconds later and a depleted health meter in the black, I hear “Snake, are you there….Snake….SNAKE!!!!”.  He was almost in tears and I was rolling my ass to the ER.  I have some more “bad video game spectator suggestion” stories that will make everyone roll, just holla if you want to hear them.

Oh I’m here, IHAQ.

Let’s see…..

Alright, let’s talk about something that you’re really looking foward to. It can be anything you want. It can even be something that just happened that you’ve been waiting for; if so, talk about how disappointed or pleased you were after all was said and done.

I’ve been waiting 4 years for the new Ataris album. It came out 2 weeks ago. I really like it, but right now it’s living in the shadow of the new Fall Out Boy album, as I said last SNT. So, I’m feeling a little disapointed to be honest. But I think it’ll be okay after I burn myself out on Infinity of High. At the same time, it feels a little off despite that. My love of the Ataris is tied up with my feelings for a particular person. That changes, and so too does everything connected.

“I’m not capable of that kind of love that I felt when I was 21,” indeed.

Your turn guys, something you’re looking foward to, or your feelings on something that finally happened.

NCAA Football 08 for PS3 on July 10th.  If it was possible to look more forward to anything than this it would require an Anna Nicole Style paternity test.  Jared Zabransky of Boise State on the cover, the only game that matters if your a true manual balla.
As for something that finally happened, the Cavemen from the Geico commercials are getting THEIR OWN SHOW!!!  Finally something that is truly entertaining and worth watching!!!
“I’m putting mom on speakerphone”
“Looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the rock”
“That is sooo condescending!”

Okay, time for a new topic. Look, I’m using the PS3 web browser to type this message!

I always thought I’d be the first one here to say that :(
XII has made me forget entirely about even wanting a PS3.
But so many kudos to you TB :D

Ah, I actually have something to say now….thanks K-!!!  Couldn’t comment on Primal Rage, since I never had anything to do with it.

Being the tattooed woman that I am, it was pretty odd that I hadn’t gotten anything in almost two years.  I’ve been waiting and waiting for something to come along.  And it finally came to me on Sunday.  A friend of mine who’s an amazing artist wanted to try something new, so he hooked me up with an AMAZING zombified version of one of my friends.  It’s killer.  Myspacers can click my name to see it as my default pic….because I’m “special” and don’t know how to link to the actual picture.  I’ve also been waiting to get the hell out of Idaho after living there for a year and a half….and now I am!!!  We made it to Reno on Monday.  Guess that’s it really.

OMG, the cavemen really are getting a pilot!
“The proposed series, titled Cavemen, is one of 14 pilots that will be produced this spring by ABC Television Studio. The comedy will center on the cavemen as they struggle with prejudice on a daily basis as they strive to live the lives of normal thirty-somethings in 2007 Atlanta.”
That’s nuts! I wonder if they’ll be able to pull Talia Shire again for the Melfi part.
On the antici…..pation topic, I’m way happy that Lost is back and have been enjoying it, but when I hear other people hating on it because they’ve built up too much expectation it gets to me. I know it shouldn’t; I’ve basically quit message boards cause of it, and I’m thisclose to doing the same for The Office for the same reason. Why do people watch if they just hate it?
Oh yeah, I can’t wait for Big Love to come back. I hate to admit it, but I just don’t have as much excitement built up for The Sopranos.
Congrats on the move, MissJess!

My four nieces are staying at my house this week, and I love them to death, but I’m getting tired of waking up to little girls screaming.

I asked!How crazy is that?

Hey, squee.  I’m with you on the Lost-lovin’.  Good stuff.  I guess most people would prefer their shows to be like Matlock.  Everything tied up nice and neat in 45 minutes.

I occasionally check out boards for different shows and it’s all the same shit.  Galactica’s is the worst.  It seems like nobody likes Galactica.  I just don’t know why people bother wasting their time arguing about a show they don’t like.  There are hundreds of shows that I don’t like and I’ve not once gone to their message boards and posted a comment.  I gotta assume it’s boredom that makes people comment on that shit.  Luckily, it’s easy to avoid.

Oh yeah.  And I’ve had a couple of Shamrock Shakes from the McDonald’s across from the Space Needle in Seattle.  Good stuff.  So green.

Battlestar Galactica is my favorite show on TV right now.  Heroes is a close second…

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 03/07/2007 8:17 PM EST

Man, everyone watches all these grown-up shows like Heroes, Supernatural, Lost, etc. I just watch cartoons and complete trash on VH1. I still can’t believe New York got rid of Mr. Boston, he was the most perfect fucking man I’ve ever seen in my entire life.

Ghosted by Mystie @ 03/07/2007 9:08 PM EST

Dude, I missed it. Muppet Baby, why aren’t you teaching anymore?
Oh no, the X-E teaching pool is down to a lowly 381!!

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 03/07/2007 9:37 PM EST

Oh Mystie I watch a LOT of trash, too. Though I signed off after Flavor 2, I just couldn’t take any more of New York. I’m still upset they killed Armed and Famous…man, I watch entirely too much TV.
Cameron, I’m a total hypocrite, because I have gone around and enjoyed reading the hating when it’s a show that grates on me and I think it’s justfied. I just get sick of how people constantly scrutinize to pronouce whether something’s jumped the shark, or how “believable” it is (and it’s alway because things aren’t happening exactly the way they expected them to. Hello, that is what fanfic is for. (And this isn’t just Lost I’m talking about, either)). I thought Galactica was pretty beloved, so I’m surprised people crab, but it just goes to show you.

I am looking forward to Friday. I will be sans child and I’m calling up all my friends to party down, lets just hope they don’t all have to work. Though I wouldn’t mind pigging out and polishing off some pizza.

I said this already on myspace MissJess and I’ll say it again I love your tattoo! It’s really making me want to get inked up some more.

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 03/07/2007 10:28 PM EST

Thanks, Squee and IHAQ!

I knew there was a reason that I was mad that we had to cancel visiting Seattle due to still-frozen mountain passes!  Shamrock Shakes!!!  I’ve never had one…bummer.

Ghosted by MissJess @ 03/08/2007 12:19 AM EST

Since the chance I’ll find a Shamrock Shake are getting smaller each day, I’ve decided to venture in another quest:

Eating the Fish Sandwich at all the local fast food places. I dunno why I want to do this, or why I like it at all, but I want to do this, preferably before Easter, the end of Lent.

So Far I’ve eaten the ones at:

McDs (Filet-o-Fish)
Wendys (Fish Sandwich)
Checkers (Deep Sea Double)
White Castle (Fish w/Cheese, but not recently)

All I need now are the ones from KFC, Burger King and Long John Silvers for the local places (there’s no other chain around LI that sells this kinda thing)

And I found out that Checkers is selling St Patty’s day shakes too, in the form of a Bailey’s Irish Cream flavor of some sort, so I might settle for that.

I stay off of most message boards for that same reason. Whine, whine, whine. And if they’re not whining, they’re just a bunch of pubescent girls drooling over the show’s token hottie.

I don’t need my TV wrapped up in neat little packages. My only complaint is when the writers of some of these serialized dramas (can’t speak for Lost, I don’t watch it) seem to have no respect for the time a viewer devotes to the show. By that I mean, it’s not uncommon for a show like that to spend an entire hour talking about doing something, and right before it’s supposed to happen…TO BE CONTINUED. In other words, I just wasted an hour of my life on an episode of a show that didn’t further the story or set up anything at all. That’s so infuriating, especially when you’ve been salivating for a week to find out what happens next and NOTHING HAPPENS.

For the record, I love Karen on The Office. I think they did an exceptional job creating a character that would be the third wheel to a popular couple, yet would be sympathetic and even likeable. That was not an easy feat on the writer’s part. That’s also just my opinion. I know a lot of people are hatin’.

Ghosted by Lori @ 03/08/2007 2:07 PM EST

I liked Karen too, and I liked the girl on the British office too, Rachel was it? She was really believable.

Does anybody remember Monster Pops (?) from the 80s-possibly early 90s? They were popscicles and were shaped like Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, and maybe the Mummy or Creature from the Black Lagoon. They came out all year ’round, I believe and I’m pretty sure they were made by the Popsicle Pops company.

Does anyone know what I’m talkin’ ’bout?

You people have never been properly traumatized by a show with an ongoing plot until you have invested all sorts of emotions in “Blake’s 7.”  The final scene still makes me shudder.  I can still hear the gunshot….

Ghosted by kingklash @ 03/08/2007 5:40 PM EST

As for getting attached samething goes for books as well, like storm of swords.  It makes it interesting at least, in a recent Terry Goodkind book I could not read fast enough to find out how far he was willing to push it.  He writes pain very well.  and happiness. I also watch a lot of TV.  I know in general way too much about moving video, how to watch, where and changing formats.  horray Orb.

My interest in Lost has faded it a bit lately. The only saving grace this season has been Desmond, since he is an awesome character.

House has been my favorite show for a while now, but Heroes is getting right up there. (The Office and Scrubs are great too, but for this conversation I’m sticking to dramas)

Whatever happened to primal rage 2? I remember seeing screenshots of it a long time ago in several gaming magazines, but it just vanished. Small release, or vaporware?

Ghosted by Supragenius @ 03/08/2007 7:33 PM EST

I haven’t watched a TV show religiously since Bands on the Run. And that’s technically a “reality” show, right?

When I happen to catch Scrubs and X-Play though, it’s on!

K-, can’t say I know what FFShrine is. I think I might have been there some time, but as for what I’m assuming is a community reference, no idea. You win. :P

As for something I’m anticipating? Well, “anticipation unfulfilled is one of the worst things you can experience”. I decided that after I looked forward to my first day of school this year, because I’d see this girl who I hadn’t talked to for a few months. And then she wasn’t there…and then I found out she switched schools. That was a bad day, and since then…

Ah, who the hell am I kidding.
First day of spring, March 21!
And in three months I’ll be 18 and done school!

MissJess, good on you. I always thought Reno looked nice.

For some reason I was thinking about that Caveman pilot today. I figure it can go one of two ways
1. Die immediately. or,
2. Wind up like something I once read on here about Herman’s Head, how apparently the gimmick came to be ignored as the show progresses.
Just some thoughts.

How I Met Your Mother is the only show I go out of my way to watch. Other than that, a lot of Seinfeld (though mostly on DVD) and most other sitcoms.- Yeah, Scrubs is pretty good.

…I think I write too much.

It’s a community reference to Shrine, not X-E. Basically its a place where we actually flame each other on a regular basis. We avoid that here, for the most part, right everyone? ;)

Without the inflection of verbal speech, I assumed “fucking right” was meant sarcastically. So, completely my bad. Zozo’s theme is indeed class.

It seems I talk in a funny way like that, and especially online things tends to get misunderstood. Like I used the word “craptacular” once, in a positive way, and someone got upset. But it was on this other, stupid forum. I tend to have a difficult time actually fitting in, but I’m liking this place.

I’m getting the FFVI Sheet Music book sometime, because the soundtrack was astounding.
And I looked up what the time was, online and then in my old strategy guide. It reminds me of how ridiculously insane that game is. God I love it.

I’m reading about the KLF-theres a pretentious group.

Justified, and Ancient.

Yeah, Reno’s been pretty cool so far.  I’m not actually settling down here.  My friends and I are on a 6-9 month long road trip around the US.  We’re in Reno for a tattoo convention because my best friend is a tattooist.

I have nothing topical to say.  Shame on me!

Ghosted by MissJess @ 03/09/2007 1:32 AM EST

A road trip, eh? I always wanted to do that. Where are you planning to go next?
Actually, right now my friend is planning to go across Canada to “rescue” his girlfriend from Newfoundland. If it happens, I want to be dropped off in the States, so I can get some Cookie Crisp.

Oh, no.  I just did a bandwidth test of our “DSL” internet connection here at the farm.  DSL my arse.  63K.  That’s practically dial-up.  Please, could somebody spare me some bandwidth?  Anyone?  It’s…cold…so cold…

Happy Friday X-Eers!
That caveman thing is amazing, but I can’t think of how long the gimmic could last.  Ah well, I will watch it.  And in 20 years we will all laugh at the concept (are we laughing now?)
Once again, hooray for the weekend!

If it wasn’t for my severe discomfort around needles, I’d get a tattoo.  Green Lantern insignia on my right ring finger.  Yeah, I spent some contemplation points on it.  But Oklahoma recently legalized tattoo parlors, so come on down and get inked!  Collect one for every state!

Desmond is indeed great…I do miss Eko though, and I’m the rare bird who even liked Ana Lucia. And I love Karen too, Lori, I think you’re spot on.
300 was awesome, if anyone’s curious. I could have done w/o the tacked-on storyline about the queen, but I guess a movie can’t be all action. What it lacked in subtlety it more than made up for in hot shirtless people. Thumbs up!

Tutsuro-We’re hitting Cali up next….Eureka, San Fran, L.A. and San Diego.
