02/10/2007: Roy Rogers Lives?

I’m back from Philly, wearing a shirt covered with cat hair to prove it. I took a train there after work on Wednesday, which brought me to Penn Station in the city. I haven’t been to Penn Station in years, but if you can somehow picture a train terminal mixed with a dilapidated shopping mall mixed with enough hardcore city grime to build a second city solely
out of grime, that’s Penn, and that’s where I spent two hours waiting for a train last Wednesday night.
Since I was going to get to my hotel pretty late, the odd assortment of eateries in Penn Station provided my only opportunities for dinner. The place is kind of like an airport, and whenever I’m in an airport alone, I feel too stupid to go to any real, respectable restaurant. The rare times that I have, I rushed through the entire meal making sure to be on my cell the entire time, because I have a complex about eating out alone and can’t stop thinking that everyone is looking at me.
So, aiming to eat quick, I stumbled onto a disgusting food court composed of several small fast food joints. I say it’s disgusting, but the place was great. Looked like it hadn’t been remodeled since the 1600s, with stained glass touches, all kinds of weird, broken tile mosaics, and the ultimate showstopper: A Roy Rogers.

Roy Rogers restaurants used to be all over the place when I was growing up, and I often lobbied to marry their fried chicken. Then, they all went away. The franchise didn’t completely die off, but there were just a handful of restaurants left for a great many years. While the owners are now trying to rebuild the once great house of chicken, it’s been a slow burn, and this tiny shack in the middle of Penn Station is the only Roy Rogers I’ve seen for roughly a decade. Obviously, I had to eat there.
Research tells me that this particular restaurant is probably privately owned and not a true franchisee. It was tiny, gritty and staffed by demons, but against all better judgment, I handed a dirty hand my five bucks and left with a tray full of familiar fried fowl and a misshapen biscuit. Incredibly, the chicken tasted exactly the same as I’d remembered. Crispy, crunchy, oily and guilt ridden.

They even had the Fixins Bar! The mighty Fixins Bar! The place where customers could doll up their sandwiches with all kinds of day-old toppings and unmarked condiments!
This means nothing to you if you’re in one of the few towns where Roy Rogers restaurants are still competitive with the larger fast food chains, but for me, it was like someone let me borrow their time machine with the rule being that I could only use it to eat food once loved.
I didn’t finish the chicken because the only seat left in the place was a tiny table practically attached to the order counter and I felt really dumb eating there, but now, whenever life throws me a curveball, I’ll know that salvation in the form of binge eating can be found in the filthiest corner of Penn Station. Yay!
Happy SNT.

I myself have eaten at this dirty dirty Roy Rogers and I must admit that, although tasty, I would have walked the extra 20 steps to the Pizza Hut Express next door =)

Awesome. Roy Rogers was everywhere when I was a kid.
I had forgotten all about it actually.

Wow I am proud to say I have eaten at a Roy Rogers! I prolly would have enjoyed it more if the flies were not puking, pooping and flying all over the fixin’s bar.

Hmmm, they don’t have Roy Rogereses in the South (at least, I have never seen or heard of it outside of X-E) BUT I will say the missing “I” in “FIXINS” and the brick interior still make this a magical SNT.

Actually, if you go down 95 through Delaware/Maryland, there are still some Roy Rogers restaurants inside the giant Rest Stop Houses along the way. Also, apparently, there are others in New York, but according to the Roy Rogers Website, they’re mostly upstate.

In the world of KFC, Popeye’s, and Zaxby’s…is there room enough for good ole Roy to truly make a comeback?

Replace Zaxby’s in my example with Bojangles. It’s more fitting in this form.

Matt! Since you’ve started writing articles again, I’d like to remind you that there’s a Comic Con in New York February 23rd. Me thinks X-E goes on location?? Yes??? (yes…)

I’ve been to that Roys and it’s really nasty in there. There’s also a Nathan’s and Dunkin Donuts right there all crammed together in a dirty glorious mess.
KFC, Popeye’s, and Church’s.
I’ve never heard of Roy Rogers until now, but that Fixins bar looks mighty wonderful.

I always saw Roy Rogers at rest stops when we used to take road trips. I never went because they were always against Nathan’s. And Nathan’s is so, so good.

Does anyone remember a fast food chain called Rax? There was one in a food court in a mall where I grew up in Portland, Oregon. All I really recall about it was that it had a mascot, an alligator named Rax who was plastered all over everything. They made sandwiches. I’m not even sure they had burgers. And why I remember any of this eighteen years later is anyone’s guess.

Manimal, you speak of Zaxbys. As far as I know they are almost all in SC. And started here. You must be close by. But ya, they are not in the roy rogers league. The only roy rogers I have ever seen was inside a rest area in Kentucky or Ohio…I am not sure which state I was in at the time…it was late and I had to pee.
(also the web site just told me I cannot post a comment within 15 seconds of my last one. It’s been an hour. How do people double post on here?

It’s an acquired skill Rache. You just wait slightly more than 15 seconds. If it already has been 15 seconds (or you haven’t posted at all and it told you to slow down for no apparent reason) just submit it again.

Hmm…Roy Rogers? ‘Never heard of it, myself.
I’ve only eaten at Roy Rogers once. When I was 8, with my dad. I have absolutely no memory of what the food tasted like, but I DO remember getting a nifty “AAAAHHHH! Real Monsters!” toy.
I ate at Penn Station once too, back in 2002. The day I left New York to go to Orlando and have the best vacation I’ve ever had. I had Dunkin’ Donuts and some coffee. So, I have good memories attached to Penn Station.

Here’s the inner-city Milwaukee lineup of fine chicken establishments:
1. Popeye’s
2. Church’s
3. Gold Rush Chicken (27th and North)
4. JJ’s Chicken and Fish (the j’s in the name look like fishhooks)
5. Shark’s Chicken and Fish (There’s an inflatable shark atop the place in summer months.)
6. Champion Chicken (on Burleigh)
7. Chicken Man (merged with Gianelli’s Pizza, 87th and Fond du Lac)
Any other Milwaukeeans out there, help me out with the list!

There used to be a Roy Rogers on a rest stop at Ocean View on the Garden State Parkway in New Jersey, and that was the closest (and as far as I know, only) Roy Rogers near me for years. I THINK it’s since been replaced with a Burger King.
KFC is the only chicken franchise I really have any familiarity with. There’s one in North Cape May and there WAS one in Wildwood, right off the main bridge (it’s closed during the winter and there were threats of a permenant shut-down as of early 2006). Never heard of any of the others mentioned above. Never saw a Popeye’s in my entire life until I moved to Philly/Camden suburbs.

If we’re going to just start naming chicken places, then I feel obligated to include Chik-Fil-A, the undisputed king. Although it wouldn’t be a great “after church” location for kb’s Sunday outings [Closed :(]

Does anyone remember a fast food chain called Rax?
Used to have one in town before Mcdonalds. I actually know where one still exist, but I’m afraid if I point it out to anyone, it’ll go out of business. I used to get a lot of gift certificates for that place but I’ll be damned if I can remember if it were really any good. The cruely fries is about all I can remember.

dohopoki @ 02/10/2007 11:13 PM EST
That didn’t make a lot of sense, to clarify, yes I know where a rax still exist but no I’ve never ate at that particular one. I just want it to be around forever in case one day I do want to try them again.

On a somewhat related subject… Has anyone ever eaten at a Mean Gene Burgers restaurant? Yes the WWF/WCW/WWE announcer has/had a burger joint franchise. I don’t know how many are out there but I found one at a rather rare location. The Lake of the Torches Casino in Lac DeFlambeu (sp) Wisconsin.

Porky @ 02/10/2007 11:22 PM EST
I sure do remember Rax. And Uncle Al the Seemingly Cajun Alligator. I also remember them getting our orders wrong every single time we went there. No wonder they vanished from the Portland area.
I thought they were gone for good, but a few months ago somebody told me a few were still in operation somewhere in the US and gave me the address to the official Rax website. If there’s anything I’ve learned, it’s that a food franchise never, ever truly dies. Like the whooping cough, anything you thought had been defeated can somehow yet return. A&W is back, believe it or not–now that KFC owns it I’ve seen a few A&Ws built into KFC restraunts. I’ll bet there’s even still a Burger Chef somewhere.
Bad news though….the address for the Rax website no longer leads to one. …Maybe they ARE truly dead….

Dude, I have that same complex about people watching me eat, as if being alone makes people think that I shouldn’t have the right to eat at all. I don’t know WHY I think that - surely people have more important things on their minds than watching me eat - but I’ll be damned if eating alone in public doesn’t make me feel like Martha Dumptruck anyway.

Yeah, I’ve eaten at this filth-hole. Once, many years ago. If I recall correctly, my buddy had the same reaction as Matt about finding a Roy’s. I will say this about it. at least it didn’t give me food poisoning like the pizza place in the Port Authority did.

The only Roy Rogers I know of on LI that’s still around is in Shirley/Moriches, off exit 58 on Sunrise Highway. Those things are everywhere at rest stops on the Jersey Turnpike & NY Thruway, as are Bob’s Big Boys (or any variation thereof).
Sadly, around here, KFC is the king, with Popeyes & Pudgies being less common and nothing else. There are Church’s Chicken, but fortunately for me, they’re co-broanded with White Castle.
Well while we do not have any roy rogers here we do have one of the best chicken places around. We have Cane’s. If anyone else on here is from Louisiana, at least a lager LA city, they will know of Canes. Not sure if they have any sites outside of the boot but it is GOOD.
Matt you are brave for eating in a place that looked like that. Wow the fixin’s bar just looked like a NO NO. You might need to update your shots after eating there, just in case.

Rache, sorry to correct you twice in one post but I did not mention Zaxby’s earlier.
HOWEVER, I DID HAVE IT FOR DINNER TONIGHT!!! (True story).
Also, Zaxby’s did not start in S.C. It was started in Statesboro, GA by two GA Southern University students. As a fellow GSU Eagle alum, I would not be the doing my job if I didn’t represent.
Oh yessss, RAX. There was one in Jax on Normandy Blvd (there you go jazzy). I remember the alligator AND the shakes that had REAL fruit in them.
We just got the second Popeyes restaurant in Iowa a few weeks ago. I tried it a couple of weeks ago and liked it, especially the biscuits, and I usually don’t care for biscuits. We also have KFC’s, but on whole, if we want fried chicken, we just go to the supermarket deli (either Hy-Vee or Dahls).

At least up until a couple years ago (don’t know if it’s still there) there was a Roy Rogers in NYC across the street from the Late Show with David Letterman theatre. I’ve been a Roy Rogers loyalist since I was a kid, even as I’ve watched a half-dozen of their franchises close here in northern VA (there’s still a location in Springfield that seems to be flourishing, thank God). From what I’ve heard, the chain wasn’t even doing that badly, but the owners started closing them all anyway. I stop at a Roy’s every single time I drive up 95 to New York, or when I go into PA.

Pigeonrat @ 02/11/2007 12:31 AM EST
I remember walking past that Roy’s when I was at Penn Station on the way to a thing at the UN building. Thought it was odd, but remember seeing a Roy’s at a rest stop along the NJ turnpike in one of those rest stops, that was 1999. Come to think of it I ate at one in 2005 at another rest stop in Maryland on my way back from the Holocaust museum in DC.

Alright, let’s see I used Cochicken AND Kenny Rogers. What do I have left in the ol’ bag o’ tricks?
We have a Chick-Fil-A in our Student Center/Union/Thingee. I’ve been eating there for 7 years. Not religiously, of course, but regularly. It was moved into the new building before the bookstore was, I guess that’s priorities for ya. I’m not complaining.

K- just dropped in (to see what condition his cochicken was in) @ 02/11/2007 1:01 AM EST
For your fast food chicken Nuggets, Chick-fil-a is the best.
But for chicken strips, here in Waco a local chain called Bush’s Chicken (no relation to the pres) is where it’s at…
Never been to (or heard of) a Roy Rogers.. Guess we don’t have them down here in the South..

I wish I had a Chick-Fil-A near me. There’s a whopping one in the state of Michigan that I know of, and Rochester Hills isn’t a convenient city for me to get to.
Metro Detroit doesn’t have many good fast food restaurants, unfortunately.

Nice! I saw a Monster Squad reunion here in Austin last year. I asked Phoebe “the Feeb” to marry me.
I watched an episode of Tales from the Crypt today from the fifth season DVD set titled “Death of Some Salesman” and Tim Curry played not one, or two, but three freaking characters in it! As a fellow fan, I thought you’d be interested in seeing ‘ol Curry play a old man, woman, and their obese daughter..
I remember Roy Rodgers; I ate breakfast there once when I was in middle school. We were on a field trip to Washington, D.C. I had a sausage biscuit with cheese and then left to get on a bus to see the Washington monument. I’ll never forget that bus, its number was 666! That only helped fuel the passionate fire I had for all things dark and evil, and I listened to Slayers Seasons in the Abyss for the entire trip. Oh, to wax nostalgic…

The name Roy Rogers sounds familiar to me, but I’m positive I’ve never eaten there. Of the solely American chicken chains, only Popeye’s Chicken has managed to find its way across the border. It’s too bad though, because I want to visit the “FXINS BAR”.
It’s funny that you mention feeling uncomfortable eating alone, because I’m the same way, plus I despise fast food ordering because it can get a little awkward. For example, try reading the menu at a place without having an employee approach the counter and act like you know what you’re getting already. If you politely ask for more time, they’ll just stand there waiting, keeping their eyes firmly on you. It’s just as bad as someone intently watch you eat, but you haven’t even eaten yet.

I live in Louisiana, so we never had a Roy Rogers here as it was a mid-atlantic chain. We have every other Fried Chicken chain eatery, however, and lots and lots of local ones. FYI, if you’re ever here, the best fried chicken is a local place called Southern Classic. Tastes like real home fried chicken. It’s in the middle of the ghetto, though, so you have to doge the occasional drive by. It’s worth it, though.
And I too cannot stand to eat alone in a restraunt. I’ve only ever done it once, and when I did I ran out to my car and got some paper and a pen and spent my entire meal acting like I was on some sort of business or something….I was really drawing pictures of aliens fighting dinosaurs and bigfoot…

Ghosted by
Wukong @ 02/11/2007 6:54 AM EST
Also, according to Wikipedia there are fewer than 30 Rax restraunts currently open. It also goes on to detail that in the mid-90’s, the Rax chain was poised for a comeback until the majority of the stores were bought out by Wendy’s.

I seem to recall seeing the Roy Roger’s in Allentown, but not for a while. I don’t like to travel too far off Hamilton Blvd when I’m heading that way on account of my horrific sense of direction. But if I need my fix of crusty eating establishments, there is Yocco’s, the hot dog king.

Up here in Canada, no Roy Rogers to speak of. However, I noticed A&W posted earlier. We have those in spades. But- no Popeye’s (we do have a restaurant named Wimpy’s, go figure), no Jack-in-the-Box, Checkers, Churches, nothing.

Ghosted by
Venkie @ 02/11/2007 9:06 AM EST
I can’t say I’ve ever had a problem eating alone, then again I don’t think I’ve ever done it when I wasn’t sitting in my car in the parking lot of a fastfood place. Can’t recall ever eating at a “proper” restaurant alone. Of course I am fat, so I honestly think when people see me eating they think it’s par for the course and are less suspicious of me, for the moment
Sometimes things are better alone, but it really depends. Concerts always dictate having friends, for me. But most times I prefer to see movies alone. Unless it’s something like Snakes on a Plane

Ghosted by
K- @ 02/11/2007 12:51 PM EST
Just to mirror what Venkie was saying, I too am from north of the border and all of this talk about fast food really depresses me. Here in Newfoundland, we have the major chains (McD’s, BK, KFC, etc) and thats about it. But for fried chicken, there is a chain called Mary Brown’s that will knock your proverbial socks off with its greasy goodness. And taters.

Yeah, we Canadians are missing a lot of the US chain restaurants- alas, I have only seen commercials for such places as Jack in the Box, and Checkers. (many many others as well- you see them on TV, they look great, but you will never find one).
A&W is great, though- we have tons of them here- I even WORKED at one for awhile, and I still think it is the best burger chain, even after working there, which is a bit unusual, I think.

We had a Popeyes and a BoJangles open up last year I think, but they closed down not too long ago. Missouri is apparently a horrible place for fast food that isn’t McD’s or Burger King. There is a Chick-Fil-A in mall in Springfield, and another is getting ready to open this month. There’s another Roy Rogers right across the street from Penn Station diagonal from the MSG entrance. It’s a hole in the wall but it is indeed a Roy Rogers and the only other local one I’ve seen. There used to be one 5 minutes from my house but it’s been turned into Wendy’s many years ago and has been one ever since.

I grew up in Oklahoma and we never had Roy Rogers. So, a couple of weeks ago I almost ate at this one…then opted for a hot dog-ish thing from Auntie Anne’s. It was pretty gross, but I’m still glad I skipped over Roy Rogers. It just looked too sketchy.
Yep, it exists. There’s one a town or two over from me. Haven’t eaten there, but I remember eating Roy Rogers as a kid.

We got a couple of A&W left in Iowa, although I haven’t been there in years.
We don’t have a White Castle in Iowa. The only way to get the burgers is to get the frozen ones in the supermarket.

I remember there used to be a Roy Rogers in Hackensack NJ near where I used to live. It’s now a Boston Market. The only other Roy Rogers I know about were in the rest stops of the NJ Turnpike.
I’ve been to that Roy Rogers a few times when I used to take the train into NYC regularly. There is a bar nearby that serves food, but I was under 21 at the time. And that Fixins Bar is really disgusting. I would like to say I avoided it like the plague, but I honestly can’t remember. I guess if you’re hungry enough to eat at Penn Station, you’re hungry enough to eat at that Roy Rogers.
There are a few more of them on I-95 between NJ and Maryland. We’ll normally look for a Chick-fil-A or KFC if we’re really hankering for chicken on long drives, though.
If anything, there needs to be more Chipotles in the northeast.

Wukong: “And I too cannot stand to eat alone in a restraunt. I’ve only ever done it once, and when I did I ran out to my car and got some paper and a pen and spent my entire meal acting like I was on some sort of business or something….I was really drawing pictures of aliens fighting dinosaurs and bigfoot… ”
That’s funny–I do the same thing. If I ever have to eat alone, I always bring a pad and paper with me. I always kinda hope that they think I’m some hotshot restaurant critic and try to bribe me with free food. Or at least they’ll think I’m some eccentric novelist who spends his life alone.
Also, I know it’s been mentioned, but the Maryland/Delaware House type rest areas off of I-95 all have Roy Rogers w/fixins bars. They are hilariously bad, but I still eat there, beacuse how often are you going to eat at one of those?
I highly recommend their breakfast sandwiches. If I remember correctly, they cost about four bucks, and come with probably one-tenth of an egg. One of the saddest/funniest food items I’ve ever paid for.

This all reminds me of the Seinfeld where Newman was addicted to Kenny Rogers chicken. Jerry encounters him in the restaurant and makes him try the side of broccoli he bought, knowing he only bought it to look “normal” and he spits it out. “Vile weed!”
I dunno, I heard someone say that line or something similiar to it at work the other day. It brought it all back.

Man, I love Chick-Fil-A when I was in Atlanta. There was a particular one in Canton that had a “Dwarf House” connected to it. How PC can you be? They should film an episode of Little People, Big World there. Awkward. For some reason I always felt like it on Sundays but in the Bible belt, no beer or chick-fil-a on the Sabboth. Mother f!
I too hate eating alone at restraunts. I always forget to bring something to read or write. It makes me feel like some sort of Farm animal. Just chewing and looking around the room.

Once you walk up the stairs to the front of MSG, there’s another Roy Rogers right across the street. And other than that, there’s one on the Jersey Turnpike and another in Berkley, NJ. And there used to be one in East Brunswick Square Mall, but they never had any food (seriously) and now it’s a poorly-manufactured t-shirt store… These are the things you need to know in life.

Add me to the list of people that hate eating alone, at least at a “real” restaurant.
I also always go IN to order at fast food places–never through the drive through. Some of that is because I am hearing impaired and can’t hear anything on those horrible speakers, but I’ve also noticed that 85% of time, I can go in and get food WAY faster than I can going through the drive through.

Ate at a Chick-Fil-A on Saturday, as a matter of fact. We have one in our local mall. Best waffle fries EVER! I could go there just to eat 10 lbs of waffle fries with mayo (don’t judge me! haha)
We have Cane’s here in the Sooner State, but I don’t like them. We also have Popeye’s but it tastes NOTHING like Popeye’s in New Orleans, so I refuse to eat there. I love N.O. Popeye’s fries…
Maybe I just love fries?
I’m OCD so I can’t go anywhere alone, least of all somewhere where I have to sit and eat with all my strange habits. Usually I’ll just go the drive-thru route and take it home where I can perform my rituals in peace. haha

There is anoher Roy Rogers in manhattan, across the street from MSG, its on the corner afew doors down of the Penn Plaza pavillion i think its called. its a roy rogers/nathans, i love it!
All the Roys in Staten Island changed to Wendy’s years ago- the mall, arden ave., hyland blvd, etc… but there are still a bunch hiding around NJ. Theres at least 2 on Turnpike- one in that rest stop near secaucus, and theres one on Rt. 9 in Bayville. I’m pretty sure the Livingston Mall still has one too.

There are at least 4 Roy Rogers in service areas on the New Jersey Turnpike - two north and two southbound in Mercer and Camden counties… There were more, but a bunch of them were converted to Burger Kings when the service area buildings were refurbished. I don’t understand the lack of love for the roast beef sandwiches, though. Sure, it may not be as good as Arby’s, but Arby’s doesn’t have a Turnpike presence, so you have to take what you can get.

Ryane: oh, bummer, hope everything’s alright or gets there soon. You’ll like seeing Shinra Mansion in 3D though, once you get there! Imagine it with a XII level of polish and you can see why fanboys are clamoring (in vain) for a VII remake. The extra ending is thought provoking, hence my wanting to discuss it with ya
Broomstick: We had Grandy’s about a decade and a half ago. My grandmother used to take me there all the time. It was always filled to the brim with the elderly. I felt out of place.

You know, I didn’t realize Roy Rogers was so well known for their chicken. I always thought Roast Beef was #1, but maybe I’m just remembering the days of Hardees when I could endlessly suck down the Roast Beef sandwiches. I was about 7 and could eat two of those thing, which was just really odd for me. I think they were laced with crack.
K- - Things are getting a little better, thanks!
I keep hearing stuff about new FFVII games but, I don’t really know what’s going on with them or if it’s real. :\ I really really hope they are though. Oh God it’d be so beautiful. And yes, now I’m really getting in the mood to finish Dirge. I wish I never would’ve set it aside! I pretty much remember what I was doing but I hate re-learning controlls.
Oooh, are you getting the special edition Advent Children on the 20th? I reserved mine at Suncoast a few weeks ago. I really hope this is the last set they put out - I’ve already bought the regular one, the PSP version and a friend burned the japanese with subtitles for me about 6 months before it came out over here, along with the extra anime short. I have too many damn versions. No- I know, one can never have too much VII ANYthing.
Oh, I also finally found the latest Kingdom Hearts figurine of Cloud. It’s pretty sweet, but I’m not sure why he has what looks like Vincent’s cape and claw on. (No, I never finished KH’sII yet either. :()

Right now the only other VII game that will be remotely attainable is Crisis Core (for PSP). Before Crisis is on cell phones, and I’m not going to buy another one just for that (though I LOVE the Turks). There’s an extra mission for Dirge on Verizon phones right now, but meh. The VII remake is a pipe dream, but if it happens, of course I’ll buy it
I hadn’t really thought about getting the new AC, since I got the limited edition version from GameStop when it came out (with a third disc of interviews with Steve Burton, Mena Suvari, and Rachael).
I liked Dirge’s story, but the gameplay was lacking (I beat it in one day). Unfortunately, the part of the ending I want to talk about is the secret ending, and it requires the 3 G Reports scattered throughout the game. But you can just watch it here after you’re done. It’s in Japanese but all that is really said is “there is much work to do.”

Never got into Roy Rogers much. I don’t think we had them in Indiana. However, I do remember Rax. They were a roast beef joint, right? What I miss is Pizza Hut of all places. For some reason, their pepperoni pan is the tops in my book. We don’t have the actual restaurants in New York. I’ve only seen the expresses in terminals and bus stations. That isn’t a REAL Pizza Hut.
Mattman I’m all about NY Comic Con. I went last year and it was insane. However it is in a bigger space this year so it shouldn’t be that much of a mob scene. Any other NYC residents plan on attending? A good time is had by all, even if you aren’t in to comics.

Anyway, I’ve always preferred those glorious chicken sandwiches that Chick-Fil-A had to offer, and plus, their ad campaigns — the cows with the misspelled signs — are freaking hilarious. Now, about “Roy Rogers,” I know that I’ve heard of those restaurants, but I was way unaware of their continued existence, even within some dark subculture of folks who desperately cling to hope that they can resurrect a defunct franchise despite seemingly insurmountable obstacles and fierce competition from the Colonel and the aforementioned illiterate bovines. What I don’t get is why somebody would name a chicken franchise after an old-timey cowboy actor. I wonder if one of the menu items is the “Trigger”…that would be twisted but laugh-worthy…

According to Roy Rogers Restaurants corporate website, (which doesn’t look like it’s been updated since 2003) their ranking of their offerings are as follows:
1. Roast Beef - “A healthy(!) alternative to a hamburger…”
2. Chicken - “Sales of restaurant chicken reached 10.6 billion in 2001″ - doesn’t say if it is counting all restaurants in the US, or just Roy Rogers - I doubt it’s just Roy Rogers…
3. Hamburgers - “Hamburgers are still king, appearing on seven out of ten restaurant menus. Four out of every ten sandwiches served are burgers. Americans eat over eight billion burgers a year. Roy Rogers serves 1/4-pound hamburgers, bacon cheeseburgers and Roy’s signature Double R Bar Burger® made with American cheese.”

For the few of you from Oklahoma City here, have you ever eaten at Coit’s Root Beer? From the rumors I’ve read about Roy Roger’s, Coit’s lunch buffet bar matches the fly and gnat count, but has something Roy Roger’s doesn’t, some green pudding stuff with mini-mallows in it.
Sounds like a variation on that “Ambrosia” stuff somebody’s mother would always bring to a family picnic or covered-dish supper when I was a kid… the green is probably some variant of pistachio pudding.

Cheeburger’s menu reminds me a lot of Steak n Shake, except with a huge ass burger.
Makes me miss Al’s Burgers.
You know what I appreciate? That people have been able to talk about fast food without some self-righteous health freak saying, “I hope you all enjoy your coronaries!” Fast food is my comfort food. I love it, which, contrary to what many people seem to think, does not equal being stupid enough to eat it all the time. It seems like every time I start talking about my favorite fast food places, someone has to give me that condescending look and say, “I don’t know how you can put that stuff in your body.” Oh my gosh! Shut up! I like indulging in a cheeseburger once in a while, I’m not injecting pig lard directly into my veins! Besides, I mostly eat Chick-fil-A when I do fast food (I try to limit myself to one meal a week), which is pretty low on the death-inducing scale compared to other fast food restaurants, and I try to eat better during the other meals of the day to compensate.
For the record, Chick-fil-A is the king of all fast food restaurants for me. I weep for those who have never had it. My usual is a Chick-fil-A sandwich, waffle fries, and a fresh-squeezed lemonade. If nutritional values meant nothing, I really could eat it every day. For a burger, I tend to choose Wendy’s (though sometimes I get a Burger King craving, usually if I’m playing one of the BK XBox games.) McDonald’s still does excellent fries, even if most everything else there is practically inedible.

And it is usually dinner on Friday night. I’m not sure if it’s “fastfood” per se. It’s from my local Italian restaurant. The place where I can kick the jukebox for always playing only half of I’m Not Okay (I Promise), because the management knows I’m going to keep pumping money into it for all eternity anyway.
The Colonel knows it. I can’t remember what he thinks of the place.

Any Okies ever have a Meers’ Burger? I loves me a Meers’ Burger, all huge and giant, served up in a pie plate. Add some fried okra, and a fresh lemonade. Golly-bob-howdy! That is some heavy fuel for whatever you got planned for the weekend. If you are a carnivore passing through southwest Oklahoma, Meers is the place to visit. If I find out you haven’t, I’ll personally send a buffalo to scratch up your DVDs. See if I don’t.

Though I’m glad some places are open on Sunday, I’m proud that Chik-fil-a chooses to close on Sunday and give their employees the day off. Nothing Blue-Law about it….
I’ve heard Truett Cathy (founder of Chik-fil-a) speak, and he’s one of the most inspiring people around. Kudos to him for going against the mainstream and closing his restaurant on Sunday…

That washed up, 2 bit Hollywood floozie nobody Roy Rodgers and his dime store hot dog stand can’t possibly hold a candle to the Legendary Kenny Rodgers Roasters. I will give a small amount of props to the fixin’s stand, but other than that, this Hopalong Cassidy’s pretzel hut strikes out hard in the presence of the Great Grey Bearded Balladeer’s palace of gourmet chicken fried eats.

Note that I did say mentality. I’m not trying to start a religious war here, not in the slightest, just being a wise-ass in sharing my opinion, as I usually am.
To each his own, as always. I’m glad you have an opinion about it, even if it’s different from mine. I’ll take Antagonism over Apathy anyday

I DID eat at Mean Gene Burgers off of I-5 near Redding in California (Cottonweed I think?). The sign featuring the chrome-domed WWF legend in tux with mic in hand is a must-eat joint. I also remember eating at Rax in Eugene, Oregon in the late 80’s. They were like the poor-man’s, red-headed-stepchild Arby’s with their junior cardboard roast beef bastroscity sandwiches.

I’ve only ever eaten at Cheeburger Cheeburger once, and it was either in Sanibel or Naples Florida. I’m slightly depressed because they boarded up our Checkers. They say it’s going to be open for the summer season, but I don’t believe them. I mourn for my banana shakes. If we’re going to talk about gourmet fast food, I feel the need to enter Fudrucker’s for the blog’s consideration. I

I don’t know if this qualifies as fast food, but my favorite quick eat is Gray’s Papaya. Not sure if they exist anywhere besides NYC. Two hot dogs and a drink for $2.75. Can’t beat that.

I’ve never eaten at a Cheeburger Cheeburger (let alone heard of it until this blog), but I got really exctied when I found one at JFK airport…then I double checked that there’s one there, and not MacArthur, like I originally thought it was.
There’s a Gray’s Papays at the Roosevelt Field Mall food court (along with a Johnny Rockets and a Soup Nazi “Soup Man” franchise), in Garden City on LI.
And Happy Valentine’s Day…Mine sucked, as always. I did get 2 bags of Swedish Fish & a bag of Twizzlers from the mom, though.
Escape from New York Pizza in Frisco. That is one cool joint with bomb pizza

Nero - its named after him because he owned it.
I remember Rax - best restaurant in the tiny truckstop town I was living in as a kid for a few years. Right across the river from a town known as ‘having seen it all’ paranormal-wise, Maysville, KY. Ghosts, UFOs, sasquatch…its all been seen there.
My favorite burger joint, tho, was a small place in DC with a peanut shell strewn floor called Five Guys. Thick, thick burgers, and messy as hell, and as delish as my dad’s homemade burgers when I was a kid! :9

Hey I just wanted to tell people that would appreciate my find. Yesterday I found Zotz candy at a local Thriftway. I bought cherry, green apple, and watermelon for 25 cents a strip. For the people that don’t know about Zots they are hard candy on the outside then they are incredibly tart/sour on the inside and they begin to foam within a few seconds. I used to buy them when I would watch my sisters play little league and my one pathetic year of T-ball. The artwork is very plain by today’s standards which is appreciated by myself.
Zotz’s everybody!!
Now continue with the chain restuarants, might still be but a very small amount of them left thread.
Oh yeah there used to be a fast food joint called Spunky’s they used to have awesome hamburgers, better then anybody’s for like under a dollar. This was in portland oregon (I live in portland now, awesome there are others on this site!) right by mall 205.

This girl I was standing next to in the hall today said she was going to dump her boyfriend when she got home, so he wouldn’t have to take her out and waste his money.
“I’m just not really into it anymore, and I’m going to save us both the trouble”
Nice timing. You just created another emo kid. I hope you’re happy.
Better to be alone to begin with, than dumped on Valentine’s Day, eh?

Ah, thanks for the answer, Moony. I guess it would make sense to name a business after yourself…
As for Valentine’s Day, I’ve never been dumped on this day because I’ve never dated! I can truly appreciate the whole “saving money” angle, too; goodness knows how many dollars I’ve kept in my pocket that would have otherwise gone towards flowers, chocolate, mushy cards, or other staples of a day whose message of “I love you” is tainted by commercialism and misunderstood by generations of people who view love as something more physical than anything else.
The rant’s over, I swear.

Hope everybody had a good Valentine’s, whether happily coupled or woefully alone or somewhere in between. I have heard that the time between Christmas and Valentine’s is the most popular time to be dumped, which seems logical.
I like eating alone, it makes me feel all growed up or something. I do absolutely have to have something to read…Last time I was out I was reading a Sin City book, and that did make me feel like people were staring disapprovingly at me and my dirty book full of boobies. Normally, though, I don’t care.
Nothing to do with the topic at hand, but I caught up on the last couple episodes of Rome and New Octavian is just not doing it for me.

See, I was nice and dumped the guy I was seeing a week ago. I almost considered keeping him around just so I wouldn’t be alone for Valentine’s Day, but he was being an emo dickhead. Plus the whole biting fetish was just too much for me.

Normally I despise people that choose the area around Valentine’s to break up with their others, but….say no more, you were in the right on this one. Yikes.
I just realized “Hooters” could take the “Rax” name and it could still have the same connotation.

Cameron - I dunno.. I *do* remember they would bring out the burgers in a little cardboard car.. always the classic cars though.. lol. The last time I went to a Cheeburger Cheeburger I was young enough to play with action figures (regularly) and I’d fill up the little car with all the action figures I could fit in it.. and then push it down the stairs. No one ever made it down alive..

First Place Goes To: Chic-fil-A. I lived in Florida for 5 years and there was a CFA caddy corner to the Barnes & Noble where I worked. Always order a No. 1 with Diet Lemonade, b/c I like hypocrisy with my waffle fries.
Second Best Joint: Sonic. Best. Shakes. Ever. Plus, Tatertots. And, you can order from those little speakers in the parking lot, and correct me if I’m wrong, the wait staff wear rollerskates. Maybe I’m embellishing, but still, how can you go wrong with “Birthday Cake” shake or the Cream Pie Shakes?

Someone mentioned Cluck U Chicken…There’s sadly, NONE in NY, let alone LI, but I wanna go to one badly ever since it was featured on the Travel Channel’s “Top 10 Places to Pig Out.” Another one of the 10, the Acme Oyster House, sadly is in NO and as far as I know, has been closed since Katrina came along. (Update: It reopened! yay!)
Late last night and the night before,
Tommyknockers, Tommyknockers,
knocking at the door.
I want to go out, don’t know if I can,
’cause I’m so afraid
of the Tommyknocker man.

There’s a huge Roy Rogers in my hometown; Manchester, CT. Still does decent business, from what I’m told!
I remember that Cluck U Chicken, the last time I went there in the Nineties, required you to sign a release if you ordered the “911″ heat-level hot wings, which were one step above “Thermonuclear”. I remember one time when a bunch of friends and I had rented a shore house for the summer, and as a practical joke, a couple of them bought an order of “911″ wings and left them in the refrigerator for an unsuspecting victim. Sure enough, another house member came home after the bars had closed, had the munchies, opened the fridge, and… we were all woken up by his screams of “Water!” Good times…
