Roy Rogers Lives?

I'm back from Philly, wearing a shirt covered with cat hair to prove it. I took a train there after work on Wednesday, which brought me to Penn Station in the city. I haven't been to Penn Station in years, but if you can somehow picture a train terminal mixed with a dilapidated shopping mall mixed with enough hardcore city grime to build a second city solely out of grime, that's Penn, and that's where I spent two hours waiting for a train last Wednesday night.

Since I was going to get to my hotel pretty late, the odd assortment of eateries in Penn Station provided my only opportunities for dinner. The place is kind of like an airport, and whenever I'm in an airport alone, I feel too stupid to go to any real, respectable restaurant. The rare times that I have, I rushed through the entire meal making sure to be on my cell the entire time, because I have a complex about eating out alone and can't stop thinking that everyone is looking at me.

So, aiming to eat quick, I stumbled onto a disgusting food court composed of several small fast food joints. I say it's disgusting, but the place was great. Looked like it hadn't been remodeled since the 1600s, with stained glass touches, all kinds of weird, broken tile mosaics, and the ultimate showstopper: A Roy Rogers.

Roy Rogers restaurants used to be all over the place when I was growing up, and I often lobbied to marry their fried chicken. Then, they all went away. The franchise didn't completely die off, but there were just a handful of restaurants left for a great many years. While the owners are now trying to rebuild the once great house of chicken, it's been a slow burn, and this tiny shack in the middle of Penn Station is the only Roy Rogers I've seen for roughly a decade. Obviously, I had to eat there.

Research tells me that this particular restaurant is probably privately owned and not a true franchisee. It was tiny, gritty and staffed by demons, but against all better judgment, I handed a dirty hand my five bucks and left with a tray full of familiar fried fowl and a misshapen biscuit. Incredibly, the chicken tasted exactly the same as I'd remembered. Crispy, crunchy, oily and guilt ridden.

They even had the Fixins Bar! The mighty Fixins Bar! The place where customers could doll up their sandwiches with all kinds of day-old toppings and unmarked condiments!

This means nothing to you if you're in one of the few towns where Roy Rogers restaurants are still competitive with the larger fast food chains, but for me, it was like someone let me borrow their time machine with the rule being that I could only use it to eat food once loved.

I didn't finish the chicken because the only seat left in the place was a tiny table practically attached to the order counter and I felt really dumb eating there, but now, whenever life throws me a curveball, I'll know that salvation in the form of binge eating can be found in the filthiest corner of Penn Station. Yay!

Happy SNT.

All the Roys in Staten Island changed to Wendy’s years ago- the mall, arden ave., hyland blvd, etc… but there are still a bunch hiding around NJ. Theres at least 2 on Turnpike- one in that rest stop near secaucus, and theres one on Rt. 9 in Bayville. I’m pretty sure the Livingston Mall still has one too.

OMG, I fear the Roys, and the one across the street. I much rather prefer my Roys coming from a highway rest stop. Just as an interesting aside, Hardee’s bought Roys chicken recipe.

And my Canadian friends, I will gladly trade you a chain of your choice for a Swiss Chalet. I heart Swiss Chalet.

There are at least 4 Roy Rogers in service areas on the New Jersey Turnpike – two north and two southbound in Mercer and Camden counties… There were more, but a bunch of them were converted to Burger Kings when the service area buildings were refurbished. I don’t understand the lack of love for the roast beef sandwiches, though. Sure, it may not be as good as Arby’s, but Arby’s doesn’t have a Turnpike presence, so you have to take what you can get.

The Roy’s across from MSG is just as old and grimy as the one in Penn Station. But if you are anywhere near Livingston, there is indeed still a Roy Rogers on the second floor on the Sears side.

Ryane: oh, bummer, hope everything’s alright or gets there soon. You’ll like seeing Shinra Mansion in 3D though, once you get there! Imagine it with a XII level of polish and you can see why fanboys are clamoring (in vain) for a VII remake. The extra ending is thought provoking, hence my wanting to discuss it with ya :D

Broomstick: We had Grandy’s about a decade and a half ago. My grandmother used to take me there all the time. It was always filled to the brim with the elderly. I felt out of place.

Chestnuts roasted by K- @ 02/12/2007 12:24 PM

We used to be crawling with Grandy’s it seemed. I don’t even see a TV ad for it now, but I remember seeing one in OKC but it wasn’t as upkept as it used to be. Any Bay Area folk remember Doggie Diner? I never got to eat there, but any Cali kid will tell you, they used to make great landmarks. I heard they went away a few years ago. I wonder if Pioneer Chicken is still going? I miss getting a drumstick on my birthday.

We have a Roy Rogers where I live (southern Maryland). I don’t eat there very often, but I LOVE their cheeseburgers!

Chestnuts roasted by Kevin @ 02/12/2007 1:47 PM

You know, I didn’t realize Roy Rogers was so well known for their chicken. I always thought Roast Beef was #1, but maybe I’m just remembering the days of Hardees when I could endlessly suck down the Roast Beef sandwiches. I was about 7 and could eat two of those thing, which was just really odd for me. I think they were laced with crack.

K- – Things are getting a little better, thanks! :) I keep hearing stuff about new FFVII games but, I don’t really know what’s going on with them or if it’s real. :\ I really really hope they are though. Oh God it’d be so beautiful. And yes, now I’m really getting in the mood to finish Dirge. I wish I never would’ve set it aside! I pretty much remember what I was doing but I hate re-learning controlls.

Oooh, are you getting the special edition Advent Children on the 20th? I reserved mine at Suncoast a few weeks ago. I really hope this is the last set they put out – I’ve already bought the regular one, the PSP version and a friend burned the japanese with subtitles for me about 6 months before it came out over here, along with the extra anime short. I have too many damn versions. No- I know, one can never have too much VII ANYthing. :D Oh, I also finally found the latest Kingdom Hearts figurine of Cloud. It’s pretty sweet, but I’m not sure why he has what looks like Vincent’s cape and claw on. (No, I never finished KH’sII yet either. :( )

Right now the only other VII game that will be remotely attainable is Crisis Core (for PSP). Before Crisis is on cell phones, and I’m not going to buy another one just for that (though I LOVE the Turks). There’s an extra mission for Dirge on Verizon phones right now, but meh. The VII remake is a pipe dream, but if it happens, of course I’ll buy it :D

I hadn’t really thought about getting the new AC, since I got the limited edition version from GameStop when it came out (with a third disc of interviews with Steve Burton, Mena Suvari, and Rachael).

I liked Dirge’s story, but the gameplay was lacking (I beat it in one day). Unfortunately, the part of the ending I want to talk about is the secret ending, and it requires the 3 G Reports scattered throughout the game. But you can just watch it here after you’re done. It’s in Japanese but all that is really said is “there is much work to do.”

Chestnuts roasted by K- @ 02/12/2007 8:44 PM

I responded Ryane, but I put in a link, so it’s in the approval bin :( It’ll show up eventually.

Never got into Roy Rogers much. I don’t think we had them in Indiana. However, I do remember Rax. They were a roast beef joint, right? What I miss is Pizza Hut of all places. For some reason, their pepperoni pan is the tops in my book. We don’t have the actual restaurants in New York. I’ve only seen the expresses in terminals and bus stations. That isn’t a REAL Pizza Hut.

Mattman I’m all about NY Comic Con. I went last year and it was insane. However it is in a bigger space this year so it shouldn’t be that much of a mob scene. Any other NYC residents plan on attending? A good time is had by all, even if you aren’t in to comics.

We have a Grandy’s here, and I love it.

And I love waffle fries with mayo.

What are waffle fries? I think I have an idea but I’m not sure. They sound amazing mmmm!

Say, IHAQ, how do my recipe work out for you?

Living in Canada, I had always seen commercials for Popeye’s restaurants, and then of course the movie ‘Little Nicky’ came out with the whole “Popeye’s chicken is fucking awesome” thing, so I always wanted to try one….

I taught in South Korea for a year and THERE I found a Popeye’s! I really liked it! I miss it…

Actually, a friend and I are considering taking the bus up to the New York Comic Con, provided our finances are in order, so there’s a chance you might catch me there.

Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 02/13/2007 12:56 AM

Mystie-

Definantly must go to NYCC. TWO WORDS: STAN LEE. Two more words: WES CRAVEN!!!

I think Matt should throw an X-E party somewhere in Times Square. It would be off the hook!

K- and kingklash: we still have a Grandy’s in my town and I still get the craving for hella fatening southern cooking once a year or so. You’re right, it’s always rife with seniors. But I’ll mow ‘em all down to get to my chicken fried steak and Okie sweet tea… it’s just that good.

IHAQ: Click here to see a vision of the Holy Waffle Fry…

Chestnuts roasted by Special K @ 02/13/2007 2:24 AM

Kevin, do you happen to go to the Roy’s in solomon’s island? i’ve seen that one, but i’ve never been in it. i always went to the one in germantown.

Chestnuts roasted by matty @ 02/13/2007 3:43 AM

I’d like to think the New York Comic Con will be better orgazines this year. The horror stories from last year’s con were myriad, my favorite being all the creators that missed or were late for scheduled appearances because security wouldn’t let them in.

Master Splinter the video you linked to in your sig has left me in a state of never ending terror.

Taking out bank loans to buy props from the crappiest theatrical live action TMNT movie, because you can’t afford it on your paltry minimum wage income…That’s bad.

Eating bacon pizza covered in mayonaise is even worse.

Chestnuts roasted by Wukong @ 02/13/2007 7:48 AM

Special K, mmmmm! They look really good. I guess this summer on our way to yearly trip to New Jersey we will have to keep a lookout for a Chick-Fil-A. I cannot rest until I try waffle fries!

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 02/13/2007 10:10 AM

This would be a good time to say…anyone remember the salad bars in Wendy’s??

That’s also the only reason my family and I would eat at Rax in the late 80s/early 90s. It was pretty much lettuce with limited dressings and choc. pudding!

…an Ohio gal…
