Roy Rogers Lives?

I'm back from Philly, wearing a shirt covered with cat hair to prove it. I took a train there after work on Wednesday, which brought me to Penn Station in the city. I haven't been to Penn Station in years, but if you can somehow picture a train terminal mixed with a dilapidated shopping mall mixed with enough hardcore city grime to build a second city solely out of grime, that's Penn, and that's where I spent two hours waiting for a train last Wednesday night.

Since I was going to get to my hotel pretty late, the odd assortment of eateries in Penn Station provided my only opportunities for dinner. The place is kind of like an airport, and whenever I'm in an airport alone, I feel too stupid to go to any real, respectable restaurant. The rare times that I have, I rushed through the entire meal making sure to be on my cell the entire time, because I have a complex about eating out alone and can't stop thinking that everyone is looking at me.

So, aiming to eat quick, I stumbled onto a disgusting food court composed of several small fast food joints. I say it's disgusting, but the place was great. Looked like it hadn't been remodeled since the 1600s, with stained glass touches, all kinds of weird, broken tile mosaics, and the ultimate showstopper: A Roy Rogers.

Roy Rogers restaurants used to be all over the place when I was growing up, and I often lobbied to marry their fried chicken. Then, they all went away. The franchise didn't completely die off, but there were just a handful of restaurants left for a great many years. While the owners are now trying to rebuild the once great house of chicken, it's been a slow burn, and this tiny shack in the middle of Penn Station is the only Roy Rogers I've seen for roughly a decade. Obviously, I had to eat there.

Research tells me that this particular restaurant is probably privately owned and not a true franchisee. It was tiny, gritty and staffed by demons, but against all better judgment, I handed a dirty hand my five bucks and left with a tray full of familiar fried fowl and a misshapen biscuit. Incredibly, the chicken tasted exactly the same as I'd remembered. Crispy, crunchy, oily and guilt ridden.

They even had the Fixins Bar! The mighty Fixins Bar! The place where customers could doll up their sandwiches with all kinds of day-old toppings and unmarked condiments!

This means nothing to you if you're in one of the few towns where Roy Rogers restaurants are still competitive with the larger fast food chains, but for me, it was like someone let me borrow their time machine with the rule being that I could only use it to eat food once loved.

I didn't finish the chicken because the only seat left in the place was a tiny table practically attached to the order counter and I felt really dumb eating there, but now, whenever life throws me a curveball, I'll know that salvation in the form of binge eating can be found in the filthiest corner of Penn Station. Yay!

Happy SNT.

The name Roy Rogers sounds familiar to me, but I’m positive I’ve never eaten there. Of the solely American chicken chains, only Popeye’s Chicken has managed to find its way across the border. It’s too bad though, because I want to visit the “FXINS BAR”.

It’s funny that you mention feeling uncomfortable eating alone, because I’m the same way, plus I despise fast food ordering because it can get a little awkward. For example, try reading the menu at a place without having an employee approach the counter and act like you know what you’re getting already. If you politely ask for more time, they’ll just stand there waiting, keeping their eyes firmly on you. It’s just as bad as someone intently watch you eat, but you haven’t even eaten yet.

I live in Louisiana, so we never had a Roy Rogers here as it was a mid-atlantic chain. We have every other Fried Chicken chain eatery, however, and lots and lots of local ones. FYI, if you’re ever here, the best fried chicken is a local place called Southern Classic. Tastes like real home fried chicken. It’s in the middle of the ghetto, though, so you have to doge the occasional drive by. It’s worth it, though.

And I too cannot stand to eat alone in a restraunt. I’ve only ever done it once, and when I did I ran out to my car and got some paper and a pen and spent my entire meal acting like I was on some sort of business or something….I was really drawing pictures of aliens fighting dinosaurs and bigfoot…

Also, according to Wikipedia there are fewer than 30 Rax restraunts currently open. It also goes on to detail that in the mid-90′s, the Rax chain was poised for a comeback until the majority of the stores were bought out by Wendy’s.

I seem to recall seeing the Roy Roger’s in Allentown, but not for a while. I don’t like to travel too far off Hamilton Blvd when I’m heading that way on account of my horrific sense of direction. But if I need my fix of crusty eating establishments, there is Yocco’s, the hot dog king.

Up here in Canada, no Roy Rogers to speak of. However, I noticed A&W posted earlier. We have those in spades. But- no Popeye’s (we do have a restaurant named Wimpy’s, go figure), no Jack-in-the-Box, Checkers, Churches, nothing.

I can’t say I’ve ever had a problem eating alone, then again I don’t think I’ve ever done it when I wasn’t sitting in my car in the parking lot of a fastfood place. Can’t recall ever eating at a “proper” restaurant alone. Of course I am fat, so I honestly think when people see me eating they think it’s par for the course and are less suspicious of me, for the moment :P

Sometimes things are better alone, but it really depends. Concerts always dictate having friends, for me. But most times I prefer to see movies alone. Unless it’s something like Snakes on a Plane :D

Just to mirror what Venkie was saying, I too am from north of the border and all of this talk about fast food really depresses me. Here in Newfoundland, we have the major chains (McD’s, BK, KFC, etc) and thats about it. But for fried chicken, there is a chain called Mary Brown’s that will knock your proverbial socks off with its greasy goodness. And taters.

Matt, here’s a listing of all the places roy rogers are in New York. http://www.royrogersrestaurants.com/index.cfm/mode/Locator/Container_Id/439/Container_Top_Level_ID/384/Franchisee_State_Prov/NY.htm the penn station one is only one of two in nyc. the other’s on 7th ave. there’s some in jersey too but although i grew up in jersey i dont recognize any of the areas.

Yeah, we Canadians are missing a lot of the US chain restaurants- alas, I have only seen commercials for such places as Jack in the Box, and Checkers. (many many others as well- you see them on TV, they look great, but you will never find one).

A&W is great, though- we have tons of them here- I even WORKED at one for awhile, and I still think it is the best burger chain, even after working there, which is a bit unusual, I think.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 02/11/2007 1:10 PM

A&W is excellent. I especially enjoy having my fries coated with an unhealthy amount of seasoning salt. By gum, methinks I’m going to go get some A&W right now.

Chestnuts roasted by Crizag @ 02/11/2007 1:14 PM

There’s actually an A&W left around here — a real old school version, too. I think they still do the orders-to-the-car shit.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 02/11/2007 1:18 PM

I’m vegetarian…

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 02/11/2007 1:23 PM

We have an A&W, too, it’s fantastic! They still take orders at cars and everything. And they use the lot to sell Christmas trees at that time of year. It may be one of the best places in the whole state.

Chestnuts roasted by Katherine @ 02/11/2007 1:40 PM

I’m back, and with A&W in hand. Teen Burger and Onion Rings = Good Times.

No car-side delivery though.

Ba-dump-a-dump, ba-dump , ba-dump-dump.

Chestnuts roasted by Crizag @ 02/11/2007 1:44 PM

Matt, There’s an A&W on Route 1, but I’ve never been there. Is there one in SI?

Chestnuts roasted by Joker @ 02/11/2007 1:48 PM

As far as I know, we don’t have any Roy Rogers in Missouri, sad I know. There is one A & W by me, but I’ve never been in it. We had a Popeyes and a BoJangles open up last year I think, but they closed down not too long ago. Missouri is apparently a horrible place for fast food that isn’t McD’s or Burger King. There is a Chick-Fil-A in mall in Springfield, and another is getting ready to open this month. I just got back from vacation in Rocheseter NY, but I don’t really remember noticing any Roy Rogers, but it’s not something I would really pay attention to.

I haven’t posted in a while and you guys will probably shoot me for this but I was always more of a kfc guy. Roy rogers was always kind of…… I dunno, bootleg to me. the last one I saw was at the NJTransit station in Trenton NJ and that was a few years back. I know there used to be one in Willowbrook mall in Wayne NJ, and there used to be one in Paterson NJ where I live but its been gone forever

Matt,
There’s another Roy Rogers right across the street from Penn Station diagonal from the MSG entrance. It’s a hole in the wall but it is indeed a Roy Rogers and the only other local one I’ve seen. There used to be one 5 minutes from my house but it’s been turned into Wendy’s many years ago and has been one ever since.

Chestnuts roasted by Melissa Y @ 02/11/2007 2:07 PM

I grew up in Oklahoma and we never had Roy Rogers. So, a couple of weeks ago I almost ate at this one…then opted for a hot dog-ish thing from Auntie Anne’s. It was pretty gross, but I’m still glad I skipped over Roy Rogers. It just looked too sketchy.

Chestnuts roasted by Joey the Girl @ 02/11/2007 2:17 PM

Yep, it exists. There’s one a town or two over from me. Haven’t eaten there, but I remember eating Roy Rogers as a kid.

Chestnuts roasted by Steve @ 02/11/2007 2:34 PM

There’s a Roy Rogers right across the street (basically) from the TRU I work at. Like, a real honest to God, walk in, sit down Roy Rogers. It used to be a Hardees back in the day.

Now that I think about it, I think we have TWO Roy Rogers in this town. Yeah, the other one is on the outskirts of the sketchy part of town, but I think it’s still there!

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 02/11/2007 2:58 PM

I live in Maryland, and in Northern Maryland they are everywhere including the famous Fixins Bar. I go up there every few months, it’s quite a trip for me and my friends, but it’s well worth it.

I love Pen Station. It’s odd to me they still have that Roy’s there, I thought they would have taken it out years ago. Last time I was up there was in 1999 when I took a tour Marvel Comics. Now find yerself a Hardees, Matt!

Chestnuts roasted by Rixliss @ 02/11/2007 3:19 PM

i love how md and va still have roy’s. they have about 15-20 of them. their roast beef is to die for and their burgers are really good too. they have coke zero!

Chestnuts roasted by matty @ 02/11/2007 4:04 PM

I’m not sure I’ve heard of Roy Rogers, but I’ve always wanted to go to an In and Out burger. Everyone says they’re very tasty, and you can make a burger with as many patties as you’ve got dollars. Sweet!

Chestnuts roasted by Tommy @ 02/11/2007 4:31 PM

At the risk of being somewhat heretical, I’ll just go ahead and say that I’ve been to Roy Rogers many times, but I’ve never had the chicken – every time, I have me a couple of Roy’s Roast Beef sandwiches (with hot beef juice!) and curley fries.
