New Article? Yes! About old soda!

There was a time, many, many years ago, when I wrote these things called "articles." I was feeling nostalgic, so I decided, what the hey? Let's use, a lot of commas, and see if it still feels, okay, to write articles.

Today's feature chooses "eleven" as its arbitrary token number and examines "eleven" different soft drinks that are no longer with us, running the gamut from Surge to Strawberry Burst Pepsi and beyond. It's my way of getting a return on the many thousands spent to amass a ridiculous collection of old, sealed soda cans.

I hope you find the article to your liking, because I gave up watching Wolf Creek to write it, and I really wanted to see that "head on a stick" part.

I seem to be getting to these later and later, but I just wanted to say:

Pepsi Blue was excellent in floats with vanilla ice cream.

That is all.

Does anyone remember a soda called “OK Soda”?? I remember it had to come out in the early 90′s

Chestnuts roasted by Axle @ 02/07/2007 8:46 PM

Not only do I remember OK Soda, I still have a can of it! WOOT!

Get ready for Caramel Pepsi Jazz. It’s crappy just like the other Jazz. Also, this summer Pepsi will debut new flavor called “Summer Mix Pepsi”. Tastes like someone mixed Hawaiian Punch and Pepsi together and this was their bastard offspring.

Yeah, welcome noobs. Thanks for the 50 “You forgot OK Soda!!” comments. Just what I always wanted.

Wow that’salotta comments.

More new Matts, too, it seems. We should gather and number them.

It’s my birthday and I got Flyboys. I swear to God know one knows me. Please help me X-Er’s.

I’m totally jealous. I missed Orbitz when it went away, but I’ve always felt a hole in my soul when I couldn’t find Crystal Pepsi anymore. And now I find there’s about 10 other ones I’ll NEVER get to try, oh woe is me!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Advocate @ 02/07/2007 11:31 PM

K- Yeah, that’s what I was thinking! :)

Bill- Bummer. “Flyboys” looks awful. That sucks. I bought my boyfriend a gift today- Season 1 of “Gargoyles”- I hope he likes it!

Let’s remember the only rule of X-E: “Don’t shit on other posters.” I’m sure someone brand new to posting in the comments is not likely to read through 200+ comments just to make sure no one has already mentioned an obscure soda.

Getting a gift like that is grounds for punching the gift giver.

The worst B-Day present I ever got was a sweater vest. I didn’t even feign being polite. It was an atrocity that could not stand.

Pretty cool article. I, too, am sort of a collector of old sodas… i’ve got a bottle of orbitz (black currant berry) and a couple other things, but generally I collect Jones Soda… I have an interesting collection of theirs, generally holiday flavors but a few others that have been discontinued or were simply special editions (valentines day packs from both this and last years with Love Potion #6, 5 holiday packs with flavors like Turkey and Gravy Soda, Mashed Potato Soda, Antacid Soda, Green Bean Casserole Soda, etc… halloween flavors like candy corn soda… things of that like, and yes, my friends and I have taste tested all of them and I’ve published the tests on forums where I’m a member). One thing that I really WOULD like to get my hands on (and i’m surprised it didn’t make your list) is Pepsi Kona… I also remember Jolt for a short time made a Jolt Espresso soda.

Anyway, the entire reason I’m commenting is to give you that little insight on my own collection, compliment you on your excellent article, and show you the attached picture of the monstrosity sitting in my kitchen;

I’d like to make an ammendment to that. It should be Don’t shit on other posters in the blog. Cuz if I didn’t go to other people’s MySpaces and send messages to talk shit on other posters from time to time, I’d of probably exploded in a wild posting frenzy and gotten my ass banned by now.

Is that Matt or Matt? Either one is cool but we just need to know the difference. It’s like two K’s or Muppet Baby’s. Heaven forbid two Old E’s or another Manimal.

where’s the Josta?

Bill, Famous Original Matt usually links the homepage through his name, so if you can’t tell from context, a mouseover does the trick.

I was just hoping you’d do an article like this. Pepsi Blue is the only food that I’ve had dreams about. “Blue…Bluuuuueee!” I scream in my sleep. And when I wake up and there is no Pepsi Blue, the world seems a little less…blue. (No OK Soda or Josta though? I’m surprised! Maybe in part 2, eh?)

Oh, and if it’s discontinued or hard-to-find sodas you’re looking for, check these out:

Bill: Thanks! You rock!

Whoever said they should make a chocolate flavored Coke or Pepsi: I agree! A few years ago, in a vending machine at some totally in-the-middle-of-nowhere country convenience store, I found a product called Chocola(there may have been a hyphen in there somewhere).

I was so excited. From the name, you’d expect chocolate + cola. But it turned out to just be a Yoohoo clone. No carbonation, no cola flavoring–nothing. It was pretty good, and I still bought it every time I went there, but boy do I wish it had been more soda-like.

So yeah, I’d like to see a big name like Coke or Pepsi try their hand at a chocolate soda. Although I can see them screwing it up by having it be diet only, and made with some crappy chemical chocolate substitute that tastes bad and makes my throat itch. Lousy soda companies.

You know what I’d really go for right now? Josta, no one mentioned that yet!!

And who rememberd OK Soda? 1-800-I-FEEL-OK? Has anyone else called this number??/? ;)

IF you can find info about Fanta MADNESS, blackberry flavor, which was only distributed in Bulgaria as a limited edition brand, I’d appreciate that!

My local supermarket (IGA) has their generic sodas that are all not-as-good clones of legit sodas with the best knock-off names…
-Mr. Spicey
-Choose Up
-Mountain Mist (or something like that)

Ever since I read this article, I am now really really NOTICING Soda when I am out at the store. Yesterday I saw pomegrante? pomegranite? pommegrante? soda….you know, that red fruit. And RC cola, which I didn’t know was still around.

I went to a job fair yesterday, and while I had some great interviews, I am still an unemployed teacher. However, I DID get on the FRONT PAGE of our city’s newspaper, since they interviewed me about the lack of jobs in our area, and my photo/interview is on the front page! It IS pretty sad when a teacher with 2 degrees and 2 years of experience can’t find teaching work. Oh well, at least my battle is recognized. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 02/08/2007 10:35 AM

Had a grape soda yesterday for the first time in 15 years. Everytime I smell orange or grape Crush I regress a little. You just can’t be taken seriously smelling like a 12 year old.

I loved Josta, yet another failed pepsi product…
