My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

Palm Pilotin’ Hardcore.

Man, it's been a busy few weeks and there are only so many scratch-off Lotto cards available to help me cope, but I'm almost over the hump. In this case, the "hump" being too retardedly exhausted to even consider writing anything of substance after finishing up writing other things of substance more strictly correlated with checks that arrive with my name on them. In times like these, when there's too much to do to ever really feel organized, I turn to technology and buy tickets for bandwagons two years too late. In other words, I got a Palm Pilot.

It's a Palm Pilot Treo 700wx, or some shit, I dunno. The woman's sister had one, and it took me all of five seconds to declare that it had to be mine. It's ridiculously expensive if you just buy it outright, but in my case, I was just upgrading from my crappy Sprint phone, and was thus privy to all sorts of discounts. In the end, it was still pricey, but not so much that I now have to kick my beloved scratch-off Lotto habit. Did I mention that I hit $50 on one card last week? I did!

I'd been looking into getting a PDA for a while now, for a variety of reasons. Like, if I want to bolt out of the office early and not tell anyone, I need to at least be accessible through e-mail to cover my ass, and now, I can be. Moreover, I just want to be able to read about elephants and Scoville ratings and other Wikipedia shit on my long bus ride home. By the time I figured out that I could download Tetris and Bejeweled, I made a halo out of construction paper and stapled it to my head.

Truth is, I'm an idiot when it comes to tech trends. I go through at least one computer every two years, and that's conservative. And, when I buy a new computer, it's really just about driving to Best Buy and picking the tower in the coolest shade of gray. When I bought the Palm, I knew I'd be able to use it as a phone, to send e-mails and to vaguely browse the Internet, but I didn't realize just how much of a "minicomputer" the thing actually is. I foresee grand times ahead, assuming I don't fumble and drop it in the next week, which is entirely possible.

My favorite Palm-related revelation has been its inbuilt Microsoft Word Mobile program, which, at least for argument's sake, would let me write articles and finish assignments from pretty much anywhere. Sure, I can't type very fast on a tiny, thumb-buttoned keyboard, but I can type, and save, and send, and maybe even print if I look around hard enough. Fun!

I won $50 and $1 on scratch off tickets from my xmas stocking. The very next day (my b-day) I won $100 on a scratch off attached to a birthday card. Beat that.

Of course, I got about 25 scratch offs in cards from my graduation party and they were all losers so the universe properly righted itself.

Ragnarok:

That’s because the blog is HTML capable, and interprets anything following a less than sign as an unclosed HTML tag, which causes it to be discarded. If you really need to use a less than sign in your post, replace it with the following four characters, without the dashes: &-l-t-;

For example, let’s replace the apersand with “n” so that you can actually see the string. “I nlt;3 transitive pictograph verbalizations” becomes “I <3 transitive pictograph verbalizations.” It’s a bit clumsy, but it works on almost any forum these days. And knowing is half the battle.

Glad to hear you’re off the scratch-offs for awhile, Matt…I’m still amazed by the fact that they make 20$ scratch-offs…

matt, did you participate in the Millionare raffle on new years?

Chestnuts roasted by asdfnick @ 01/29/2007 10:04 AM

OoOoOoOoHhHhHhHh … nifty communicator brick, Matt. Beats the hell out of my black leather-bound address book and planner that I got as a free gift from a certain credit card company. While my little black book does have that certain nostalgic charm, you can’t play Bejeweled on it.

As to the iPhone … meh, I’m not impressed. I like my iPod well enough, especially considering I have received both of them as gifts and haven’t had the battery or software issues a lot of people have had. I like the interface though I think they tend to over-think and over-complicate it just a bit. That said, considering what I do to phones (I go through one about every 6 months due to my bad habit of throwing them), I really don’t want my mp3 player tied up to it.

I won $35 and then $50 on the first two lottery tickets I ever played. It’s enough to turn someone into an addict for life.

Jesus- I STILL don’t even have a cell phone.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 01/29/2007 12:03 PM

I’m not alone! I don’t have a cell phone either (unless you count the Tracfone I bought five years ago that stays in my purse with the power off in case I need it for an emergency. 48 pre-paid minutes, baby!) I hate talking on the phone, so I consider the fact that people can’t reach me a benefit of leaving the house. Besides, the way I see it, if I’m out doing something, I’m busy. I can’t give you the attention you deserve if you call me, and I can’t concentrate on what I’m doing if I’m trying to talk to you, so I’ll just check my messages when I get home and return your call then. My husband is even more anti-cell phone than I am. He recently mentioned to someone that we didn’t have cell phones, to which he received the response, “How do you SURVIVE?” I thought that was a little overdramatic, especially from a guy in his upper 40′s who can remember even more than I do just how EASILY we survived without them.

Wow, I’m more sure than ever that this is the place for me, a lot of us are cell phoneless. I worry that someone is going to buy me one now that I am getting my licence. I don’t care if it’s for emergencies or not, I don’t want to waste 10 bucks every month just so I don’t lose my phone account. I even told my husband, if anyone buys me a cell phone I’m going to tell them to take it back, I don’t care how rude I am.

Another reason to try to get a Wii. All you Wii-people (Wiiples?) who also are HomeStar Runner fans, ring this up on your browsers:

curious? can you access myspace with that? I’m guessing yes. I too have sprint and am getting close to my upgrade time. I might have to splurge.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 01/29/2007 3:20 PM

The Treos are decent little PDAs. My ex-boyfriend has had a 650 since they came out and it still functions even though he has thrown it, dropped it, drowned it, etc. I believe that he has been so impressed with it, he is going to upgrade to the 750 soon.

I like the funky placement of the numbers and the ?, !, #, etc. symbols.

Matt, does it have a stylus? Or are you forced to type like a newbie pecking at the miniscule keyboard? Either way, it’s super cool.

Chestnuts roasted by Justin @ 01/29/2007 5:26 PM

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t need all of the latest gadgets. Just leave me with the basics. I recently got rid of my Tracfone because I only use it for about 2 minutes a month, so I just borrow my moms. I also have no desire to buy a palm pilot, mp3, webcam, iphones, etc. Heck, it’s been a long time since I’ve played any video games so I have don’t have any desire to own a Wii, PS#, DS, or whatever else comes out. My last portable video game system I have is my Game Boy Color, and not the pocket one either. Haven’t touched it in awhile either.

Yeesh, the above paragraph makes me sound like I’m anti-technology, which if I’m talking to you guys I’m apparently ain’t. I just don’t to be in constant contact with everyone in the world.

I got a funny awesome idea earlier today while bored in one of my classes!

Combining a regular, boring class with MST3K. Riffing on how boring & awful the lecture is, the look on the Prof’s face when they’re telling this, etc all to prevent from driving yourself crazy.

My Grandma’s been pretty lucky with scratch-offs. She’s won about $60 total so far in the last month. Also, I’m the only family member she loves, so she gives em to me! :D

Thanks. Any forum I’ve ever frequented and any blogging software I’ve used that supposrts HTML tags only interprets angle brackets as coding when a complete tag is used. Now that I know this one is a little different, shouldn’t have anymore problems. ;)

Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 01/29/2007 7:53 PM

Matt, did you send me a thank-you note?
I haven’t received one. I was wondering if perhaps my husband pulled it out of the mail while I was gone and threw it out b/c he took offense at my “spending money on someone you don’t even know.” Fun fact: Of the three gifts I bought on Amazon.com for Christmas, yours would be the only one that reached it’s owner.
Damn brothers not updating their wishlists with current addresses.

Chestnuts roasted by Bitchick @ 01/29/2007 9:39 PM

I’m even less of a technology freak than Matt and JLAJRC. My DVD player is whatever was cheapest three years ago when I bought it. I own an orginal Nintendo and that’s it. My computer tower is whatever was cheapest two years ago (and my monitor is going on probably five and works just fine). My TV came from my dad’s house. I collect records (yes, the black vinyl music things), for crying out loud.

My sister’s been trying to talk me into getting a cell phone of some kind, but I don’t see the point for me. I don’t call that many people, anyway. It’s just another thing to carry around and another thing to pay for. When I really, REALLY need to get in touch with someone, I borrow a cell phone (like I did last year when I was on vacation).

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 01/29/2007 10:29 PM

Wow, starwenn- you remind me of me. The only gaming system I own is a Super Nintendo, still have 200 VHS tapes, and my car- despite being a 1999- PLAYS TAPES. So, I am constantly making MIX TAPES. Very old school. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 01/29/2007 11:22 PM

wow this is awesome something i have some sort of knowledge on. i sell sprint phones for a living, and i have a word of advice for you. it’s too late now because they are closed but call *2 tomorrow and put insurance on that thing. It’s 6.99 a month and it guaranteed insurance for lost, dropped, stolen. If you do those things you get a new one for fifty bucks. With a phone that expensive you need it man.

Chestnuts roasted by Danny @ 01/29/2007 11:54 PM

Sh*t! I have had the Wendy’s theme song in my head all day and I just saw the commercial so I can count on going to bed with it too. You know, the stupid whistle? I question how they came to buy that jig. hmmm….I used the word jig for possibly the first time in my life.
