Arcadin’ in AC.

Yeah, so, we went to Atlantic City Friday night, and for once in my miserable life, I actually won. Luck was on my side during various slot-related activities, most notably when at a Star Wars penny machine which let me cash out with around 1500 bucks. Most of that went back to the casino over the course of a looooong night, but I still came out ahead. That Star Wars slot was amazing. Don't let the "penny" thing fool you, because the max bet was 450 pennies, meaning that I paid 4.50 per spin. There were all kinds of insane bonuses. Like, sometimes you'd have to pick Vader or Obi-Wan in a lightsaber duel, and they'd battle right there on the video screen. More ultimately, a giant Death Star toy sat atop the machine, and if you got the right bonus, it'd spin around and give you massive coinage. I was stupid to keep pressing my luck, but even breaking even would've been a nice surprise after years of losing way too much cash down there. Actually having more money than we started with after doing the big count-up was an incredible feeling that I will probably never experience again.

We stayed at the Tropicana, which got a major facelift in the years since my last visit. It's in many ways just as flashy as The Borgata now, albeit less airy, and there's some really great newish bars to boot. The Trop is a tough sell because it's all the way on the ass end of the boardwalk with every other casino being more than a 15 minute walk away, but if you're in the area, give it a shot -- you'll feel fancy.

After a night of debauchery and like two hours sleep, we hit the boardwalk for a couple of minutes just because it was there to hit, and though there wasn't much to see all the way down by Trop's area, there was one old school casino arcade, called "Playcade," complete with broken crane machines and an assortment of dusty, million-point prizes that would require 55,000 games of skeeball to achieve. I considered doing a little story on it, but the security in this place was shockingly tight, and I was too hungover to field the "WHADYA THINK YOU'RE DOIN?!" looks and body language. Instead, we'll settle on this...

Converted from The Simpsons arcade game, it's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time! I know it's not entirely uncommon to convert one game into another, or at least use the framework with new innards, but Playcade went for some extra low rent charm points by barely redecorating the cabinet. From the sides (which are far more visible due to the arcade's cramped aisles), you'd assume this was The Simpsons. Only when you get in front of machine could you notice the supremely crude and totally homemade Ninja Turtles marquee, which doesn't even successfully convey that this is the Turtles In Time sequel.

Oddly, both The Simpsons and Turtles In Time came out in 1991, so I'm left curious as to how the latter ended up cannibalizing the former. Probably a case of Bart's electronic innards going haywire, and the arcade's owner having more luck finding a Turtle-themed replacement. Either way, I love that marquee.

The new seasons of 24 and Rome start tonight, coinciding. And here I am, Tivoless.

Sounds like a better weekend than mine was….

I’m just sad we didn’t get a Big Daddy update. I miss that heavy set man, and I worry he’s passed on.

I really need to go to Atlantic City…Congrats on finally winning, Matt.

If you have digital cable you can watch Rome tomorrow on HBO On Demand, freeing you up for 24.

I’ll look for those StarWars machines next time im in AC.

Man, we don’t even have arcades around here in Toledo. Well, we do, but they suck. Maybe one classic game, and a whole bunch of those new games that either cost $1 per player or are just some stupid simulator game.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! [/intro]

You won 1500 bucks on a slot/penny machine? Holy zombie jesus!

Matt, that’s why internet piracy is so awesome. Right now I’m downloading four shows that I like. I’ll be able to watch them whenever I want, and I won’t even have to shell out the cash for a Tivo. And because of my campus’s super-sexy internet connection, all four episodes will will take about 12 minutes.

Also, as I was typing it I realized that Tivo probably stands for “TV In Video Out”. Can anyone confirm that?

The most I’ve ever won on a slot machine was 20 bucks. Although a friend of mine’s mom won over 20,000 on one.

Oh mannn I didn’t even know Turtles in Time had an arcade release. Did Hyperstone Heist?

I remember seeing one time years ago at a local store that would have have video arcade games the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, but the demo screen said “Teenage Mutant HERO Turtles”,like they are called in Europe. I always thought that was wierd.

When I siwtch from Charter to Dish Network in Oct of 05, a 100 hour DVR was included in the deal, and my life hasn’t been the same since. It’s so nice being able to record two different shows and still watch something else at the same time. Speaking of which I really should delete those 20 episodes of Dirty Jobs I have on there.

Congrats on the win, Matt! And, at a penny slot! I need to get my cheap arse to order a DVR from the satellite company.

Are there other novelty/themed gambling portals, ones just a notable as the Star Wars Slot Wager?

Chestnuts roasted by Warx @ 01/14/2007 8:48 PM

First off, get a Tivo or a Tifaux or whatever. But for now, if you have HBO OnDemand or multiple HBO channels, you can see Rome soon. Seriously though, having a dvr is good times. I only have 40 hours, so I have to be stay on top of what I’m recording, but then I watch a fuckton of television.
Congrats on the good luck :D . I got some snaps of those Star Wars machines last time I was in Vegas: 1, 2, 3.

Interestingly enough, “Turtles In Time” was an arcade game before it was a platform game. I have the arcade version as a special feature on my “TMNT 3: Mutant Nightmare” game for GCN. Also, my local Shakey’s has an arcade/game room that includes the Simpson’s arcade game.

Warx, there’s a slot machine for every franchise under the sun. The SW ones are the coolest I’ve seen, though, not counting the crazy Japanese ones.

WT, as of at least October 2005, Big Daddy was still very much alive. I used to live in Wildwood, and I’d see him all the time on the boards. He even came in my line at the grocery store I worked at in Wildwood once. I felt humbled.

Yup, the Tropicana’s definately gotten an upgrade. I went there to see the new stuff about two years ago, and I felt posh just walking through. I didn’t actually play the slots there, but I did explore the Cuban Quarter. It was awesome, with fancy shops selling things only Donald Trump could afford, a ceiling that looked like a real sky, and a big fountain in the center “square.” For those of you traveling to Atlantic City, this is where the IMAX theater is, too, though sadly there wasn’t anything good there when I visited.

I ended up gambling at Bally’s Wild West. I didn’t do nearly as well as Matt, only won about 10 bucks, but I also didn’t have the money to blow. I was only there on a day trip, and I needed money for the bus home. I went on the Wheel of Fortune slot; the Star Wars slots must be new, as I would have tried that if I’d seen it.

Matt,

You honestly have no clue what you’re in for. The first four episodes of “24″ this season are “holy shit!” to the nth degree. If the rest of the season maintains that same level of intensity, we may need oxygen tanks.

squee4242, I like that word. “fuckton”. I too am a TiVo addict (40 hours here also) and I’m such a TV geek it’s amazing. Now if only I’d start watching these things in a timely manner…

I need to get to one of those Star Wars Penny Machines someday.

The Simpsons Arcade Game made into Turtles in Time? It’s like the beauty of love encased in the beauty of nature.

I remember someone (possible Bill O’Reilly for INSIDE EDITION or CURRENT AFFAIR or whatever) doing a segment circa 1990 on the popularity of the Simpsons vs. other kids toys, etc. ANYWAYS, it ended with the anchor suggesting that someone was probably going to come along with a “Simpsons vs. the Ninja Turtles” crossover.

Well, it took 17 year but it looks like it has finally happened in Atlantic City. “It’s David vs. Goliath, and this time, David wins!”

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 01/14/2007 10:17 PM

Lol tay, I came across the book sale a few weeks ago… yeah, it’s still up, but the PayPal account isn’t accepting payments. I think the old mystery box page is also around somewhere still, but I can’t find it right now, just an article someone else who received one of the boxes wrote. The old old webcam page is still up, too. *snicker*

I am SOOOO upset that I missed the SNT! But we’ve had “Winter Storm ’07″ here in the Sooner State and I’ve been iced in for two days, so some friends came down to see me… so instead of posting about TV theme songs, we were playing TV theme song trivia… so I guess I was kind of here in spirit. Just wanted to say BRAVO! to squee4242 and Rainbowfeet for posting the lyrics to the I Dream of Jeannie/Suzanne Vega promo. If I had been around last night I coulda given you all of them. I often sing that with one of my co-workers at my night job. Took us years to find out what song it came from. Awesome to the guy who put it on a CD!

Nice win, Matt! I spent last night gambling as well= 11 people came over to my place for a huge game of Texas Hold ‘Em. I went all in and lost… I was down to 2 chips…and I ended up in second place! We played for over 5 hours. It was intense. Good times. (And since I ran into the office and checked SNT in the middle of the poker game, I had various TV themes in my head all night, most notably Heathcliff and Facts of Life.)

Mmm.. I have yet to pick a drama that catches my attention. I think I just do not have the attention for them. I will be getting nerdy come Tuesday when American Idol starts up again.
