First Post! Fisrt time Ever!!

Whoo.

So, how should I come down off the holiday hangover? I have one bottle of jones holiday soda left in the fridge, and after that, everything’s gone for like 10 more months.

Anyone else trying to cope?

Well, I don’t know how great a topic this is, but it’s on my mind (I’ve been checking out old TV on YouTube) so I’ll throw it out there and see if it sticks.

Name one or more of your favorite TV theme songs of the past – the ones you recognize within the first couple of notes and make you totally psyched. (You can also feel free to vent about how nobody bothers with theme songs anymore.)

Personally, I love the theme song to Perfect Strangers. It’s filled with nostalgic 80’s goodness and reminds me of the times when Fridays meant TGIF. Anyone else have one?

Ghosted by Lori @ 01/13/2007 11:40 PM EST

You know, i live in S. Florida and there are 2 type of bars. Ok three. Old people pubs, clubbing bars and trendy tiki waterfront bars. You really have to be in the mood to enjoy these at a given time. I wish there was an X-E bar/pub/lounge. Think about it. It would be filled with cool people, nastolgic shit everywhere, a great arcade room and the servers would have to wear Storm trooper helmets so if they got your order wrong you could correct them using Jedi mind tricks. Ex:

“Excuse me, waiter?”
“Yes?”
“This wasn’t the drink I was looking for.”
“That isn’t the drink you were looking for”
“I’d like a new one”
“I’ll get you a new one.”
“Move a long.”
“Move a long….move a long.”

woot for just waking up.

As for TV theme songs, there are two that really stick with me. First is “Hill Street Blues,” very mellow amongst the chaos of the show’s action. The best, however, is that of “Night Court.” The music perfectly opens the show, a type of show that, when it unexpectedly comes on (say, during a Milwaukee Brewers rain TV rain delay), you just can’t turn it off.

I have also caught myself singing the “Gummi Bears” theme song at some of the most inopportune times.

“…bouncing here and there and everywhere…”

Ghosted by Thorzul @ 01/13/2007 11:51 PM EST

Such a weird sense of time I’m getting from this place, lately. LJ feed says it’s 3:30 AM.

I love the theme from “The Adventures of Pete and Pete.” It’s pretty much just a generic “early 90’s rock” song, but it reminds me of the whole era and of being a little kid and of summertime.

And, Thorzul, not cool. The “Gummi Bears” song will be in my head forever, now. “Hiiiigh adventure that’s beyond compare…!”

Ghosted by Katherine @ 01/13/2007 11:57 PM EST

You say that like it’s a bad thing. Having the Gummi Bears song stuck in your head forever is nothing but awesome.

Ghosted by canoesforshoes @ 01/13/2007 11:59 PM EST

I could never pick a favorite TV song, it’d be more like a favorite dozen songs. And I can recognize tons of theme songs with just a few notes, I’m the queen of memorizing pointless crap that will never be of any real use. I’m also queen of the Flutter Ponies.

Ghosted by Mystie @ 01/14/2007 12:00 AM EST

First is “Hill Street Blues,” very mellow amongst the chaos of the show’s action.

I actually have a long list (I chose one for brevity’s sake), and that’s one of them. For me, it’s the quintessential 80’s drama theme song. Man, NBC rocked back then! As for a much guiltier pleasure, I mentioned to my husband earlier tonight that the theme song to Zoobilee Zoo pops into my head now and then for no apparent reason. The weird thing is, I didn’t watch it. My little sister did. Still, I can sing pretty much the whole thing (and sometimes do for inexplicable reasons.) It’s just so darn catchy! (”My name is Van Gogh, just color me fuuuunnn!”)

Ghosted by Lori @ 01/14/2007 12:05 AM EST

Gilligan’s Island gets my vote for favorite theme. There are a lot of others I like equally or better, but it’s too classic to ignore.
Speaking of TGIF, I was checking the info on my TV last night and the channel above ABC here is QVC. QVC had something on all night labeled “TGIF”. I mistakenly thought it was on ABC, yelled “TGIF is back?!”, and then realized I was an idiot.

Ghosted by canoesforshoes @ 01/14/2007 12:16 AM EST

not my favorite theme song, but one that always pops in my head at any given time…
“Maybe the world is blind
Or just a little unkind”
Yes, from Punky Brewster.
I don’t really like today. And frankly I’m getting tired of these days that I really do nothing that I want to, especially weekend days. Well I saw Aurthor and the Invisibles. It was alright, on the better side of kids shows. But there’s so many bad ones that I just don’t know. I’m rambling, so now I’ll stop.

Well, my favorite theme song doesn’t have words. The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” theme music. It’s the only one that when I hear it, I have to get up and dance a little bit, especially the part where, if you watch the later seasons, in the opening credits Spike’s driving his Desoto and bobbing his head singing ‘My Way.’ I also like the Dick Van Dyke show theme song, cause when I watched it, Nick@Nite made up lyrics to it. All I remember from that was “But there’s yet another version, he clears the ottoman, and ironically he stumbles on the rug/ After that, Rob and Sally and Buddy shake hands, and the episode title comes (obscuring Richie)/Then Rob shakes hands with Buddy again.” I miss the old Nick @ Nite.

Ghosted by FyarlGirl @ 01/14/2007 12:45 AM EST

I was always partial to the sad musical ones like Taxi or the end of The Incredible Hulk.

If it came to Theme songs you can’t get at of your head I would have to say Small Wonder. You know, Vici the robot kid?

Ghosted by Bill @ 01/14/2007 12:45 AM EST

The night I met my wife I was with friends and we got talking about great 80s shows and theme songs. She mentioned Punky Brewster, and I just started singing it out. She was impressed and, well, the rest is history.

Mine is DuckTales for sure.

Greatest TV theme song ever? “Magnum P.I.” To this day, every time I hear, I’m totally pumped and ready to go on whatever assignment Thomas M. has that week. The guy’s a total badass, and his badass music emphasizes that fact. That split-second scene in the opening credits where he slaps that clip into his gun with that stone-cold look on his face? Awesome.
I have a TV theme songs CD, and every time Magnum’s theme busts out, I’m in danger of getting a speeding ticket.

Ghosted by Commander Awesome @ 01/14/2007 12:57 AM EST

Holy crap FyarlGirl I was only just thinking about that song this week, and about asking if anyone else remembered it! I’ve still got that bitch memorized:
Dick Van Dyke is Robert Petrie,
He comes home, hugs Laura,
and accidentally trips over that thing!
But sometimes he doesn’t do that
Because they changed it
Instead he skirts it with a nifty step!
And there’s yet another version,
He clears the ottoman,
But ironically he stumbles on the ruuuuuug!
Then Rob, Buddy and Sally shake hands,
And the episode title appears (obscuring Richie)
And notice Rob shakes hands with Buddy again (doo doo doo doooooo doo)
And that’s it!
And Lori just beat me to the lyrics with a clip, but I can’t resist, since I’ve typed it out. That was all from memory, baybee.
There was another one, about I Dream of Jeannie that was set to that Suzanne Vega song Tom’s Diner, but I don’t remember that one as well…I still get the line “Major Nelson works at NASA with suspicious Doctor Bellows” stuck in my head at least once a month though.

I know this is slightly off topic but not totally. Does anyone reference 80’s and 90’s tv shows and movies at work or with other people and get blank stares that force you to explain only to give up and feel sheepish?

Cool news: NECA is going to be making reproductions of the orginal Pee-Wee’s Playhouse toys and later this fall, they’ll be making brand new Pee-Wee figures.

At least once a day, which is why I’m here.

Lori, YouTube just went up in my estimations, which I thought was impossible. Squee4242, you rock! I remember the “I Dream of Jeannie” one, too, but just about what you remembered. Wasn’t there another promo set to classical music that talked about all the shows? I can’t remember the tune or anything, just that I used to remember it.
And Bill, I feel your pain. I reference tv and movies all the time, but since I’ve finished my the english part of my degree and am now only in education classes, everyone looks at me like I’ve gone insane. Which, due to the fact that I’m stuck in Education classes, I guess I have. Yesterday I told this jerk, “Laugh while you can, Monkey-Boy,” and he totally had no idea what I was talking about! Buckaroo Banzai! It’s not that obscure! I even did it with my ridiculously fake Italian accent. I have an idea, to go along with Bill’s idea of a X-E pub: X-E University. Ooh, we could have different fraternities, like TNMT and sororities, like JEM. Classes like “Finding Old Kool-Aid, 3245.” Matt could be Dean Wermer and put the cool kids on Double Secret Probation.

“Monkees,” “Greatest American Hero,” and “Moonlighting” in live-action. For animation, no one beat the classic Disney Afternoon toons when it came to catchy themes, except for maybe He-Man’s heart-thumping opening credits intro.

Best way to come down from the “holiday hangover?” Busy yourself with non-holiday stuff and chores you put off over December, like cleaning or setting up new gadgets.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 01/14/2007 1:24 AM EST

Sadly, YouTube was not as forthcoming with I Dream of Jeannie. Oh, “Moonlighting!” That theme song is so romantic, I always thought. Cool/odd thing: on my first birthday video tape, the camera pans to my dad watching tv, then pans to the television, where you can see he’s watching “Moonlighting.” I was raised from birth to appreciate the finer things in life, I guess.

There’s a good number of us here who are working on education degrees or are already teachers. And you’re right, we are insane :D

At least I can still relate to students about video games and music. I don’t really watch TV, save the odd ep. of X-Play.

I’ll take the bullet. Friends. Though it seemed to get watered down as the series went on.

Ghosted by K- @ 01/14/2007 1:32 AM EST

yea the tales from the crypt one was awesome, and.. HOLY SHIT it’s cold

Ghosted by cheeky @ 01/14/2007 1:32 AM EST

I was at a business lunch yesterday and I pulled a Never Ending Story line and no one got it. It was pretty obscure but it fit. I only had time to get it to go so when the waitress gave me the ToGo box I opened it and took a bite of the sandwich and put it back saying, “No….not too much. We still have a long journey to go.”
Everybody looked at me like I said I was going to put in my pocket or something. So many “wtf” looks. (sigh)

I’m not going to mean. But you have just offended me. Adam Sessler is my lord and savior (alternately with Mr. T, but still).

He is intelligent and witty, politically saavy and he pwned Jack Thompson. He is a god amoungst men.

Long live the Sess!!! Sessler in 08!!!!

Some TV theme songs I love are:

He-man and the Masters of the Universe
Transformers
G.I. Joe
Mr. Belvedere
Ren & Stimpy
Curb Your Enthusiasm
Duck Tails
Scooby Doo
Smurfs

Obviously, I love cartoon theme songs!

Welcome to you, and how do you do?
Everybody’s waiting here at Pooh Corner.
Waiting for you, and Winnie the Pooh,
To have a happy oopty pooh time.

Gloomy old Eeyore nods his head,
He worries away the time.
(”Thanks for noticin’ me.”)
Owl makes his speeches long and loud,
Without any reason or rhyme.
(”Now I remember my Aunt Matilda on my uncle’s side, my Uncle Orville that is, who often said to me…”)
While Rabbit is busy pulling weeds,
His carrots grow tall and sweet.
Kanga is baking pies and cakes,
That Little Roo’s waiting to eat.
And Piglet forever cleaning house,
Is doing his daily sweep.
(”Whatta whatta whatta mess!”)
Tigger keeps bouncing up and down,
Perfecting his Tigger-ly leap.
(”Say, this is tiggerific! Hoo hoo hoo hooooo!”)

And here comes Winnie the Pooh,
Winnie the Pooh,
Tubbie little cubbie all stuffed with fluff.
He’s Winnie the Pooh,
Winnie the Pooh,
Willy, nilly, silly old bear.

Well, well, well welcome to you,
I’m Winnie the Pooh,
Everybody’s waiting here at Pooh Corner,
Waiting for you,
And me, Winnie the Pooh!
To have a happy oopty pooh time.
Let’s have a happy oopty pooh time!

G4?! Man used to watch that all the time when it was TechTV. The Screen Savers was mesmorizing to me for some reason, loved it. Probably because of Sarah Lane.

I don’t get it since I changed from DirecTV to Mediacom though. Now it’s all video game stuff, isn’t it? I’ve seen it a bit recently, and that’s all they seem to show.

Ghosted by Justin @ 01/14/2007 1:44 AM EST

Now I have the Gummie Bears song in my head! Tail Spin is up there, pretty much everything from the Disney afternoon in that ear (mid 90’s). TMNT and GI Joe will always be in my head. Actually a lot of Nick at Nite from the late 80’s as well. My dad use to drive long haul and would take me with him. When we stayed in hotels (rare) we would always watch Mr. Ed. To this day I can still sing the whole thing!

It’s basically X-Play (Awesome!), Cheat! (Cut your hair again Kristin! just my opinion), Arrested Development, and Star Trek.

I personally only watch X-Play anymore.

Ghosted by K- @ 01/14/2007 1:46 AM EST

They show Arrested Development?! Crap, I LOVED that show!

X-Play was always one of my favorites too.

Ooh ooh, I gotta ad The A-Team to my list of fav. theme songs. Baaa ba ba baaaa, ba baa baaa…

Sorry to hear about the lack of sleep as a result of good old A.C., Matt!

A friend of mine and I were down there recently and came across one of the coolest creatures known to man…

Hermit crabs…

…with designs painted on their shells!

Seriously…someone out there got so bored that they decided hermit crabs needed, for example, a “Superman” symbol painted onto their shell.

I forget the exact store though…but it was great nonetheless.

Aaahhh! Squee! You got there before I did! As soon as I saw the initial post, I had to scroll through to see if anyone else took care of it already. :) I probably sing the new Dick Van Dyke Show theme once a week at least. I will have to scour YouTube for more ASAP.

I can’t really decide on any particular theme right now. I was thinking of some musical one, and after checking, I’m pretty sure it was Doogie Howser, M.D. Most theme songs are really good ones, though. I do have to throw in a nod for the closing theme for Space Cases- bias and all.

In other news, I bought the Gummi Bears dvd set back in November, and I don’t think there has been a day since that the theme hasn’t been stuck in my head. It could be worse. I am also finding that I am enjoying it loads more than any of the other Disney Afternoon sets I have, though I liked the others more when I was little. (See Rescue Rangers.) This has thrown me for a loop.

Ghosted by Rainbowfeet @ 01/14/2007 1:59 AM EST

I like a lot of the title songs mentioned so far….but you know which one stands out to me as just a good overall theme song? Mystery Science Theatre 3000! Even if you haven’t ever seen the show before you knew exactly what it was about after you saw the opening theme….plus it was plain funny!
