A New Friday The 13th Flick YASE YASE.

CHUD has a great little interview with the producers of the upcoming Friday The 13th "remake," or "reimagining," or "some kind of sequel" or whatever you want to call it. Check it out here.

I'm so freakin excited about this. Now, sure, I've learned my lesson about producers talking about how much they love and respect a franchise they've inherited only to do everything to dictate otherwise, but let's be optimistic and take these tidbits at their awesome facey valuest. For one, they seem to want to play it straight -- NO SPOOFING, which is one of my cardinal rules on how to keep things from sucking. And, while some fans don't like the idea of restarting the story rather than continuing it, I have to ask: "Continue what?" If you like the oldest movies in the series and want to see more of that kind of stuff, restarting the bitch is the only way to get it.

Here's the kicker, though. They said that they'll be drawing most of their inspiration from the first three installments of the series. Okay, Part 1, whatever, but Part 2 and Part 3? Holy God yes. Yeah, they'll be creating their own origin tale, which is kind of risky because I don't think we really need or should even have that much information about how it all began or what it means, but we certainly seem poised for the best Jason Voorhees effort in, heck, twenty years.

There are ways to make this movie work. Unfortunately, there are also ways to make this movie not work, but still make a lot of money. I'm hoping the guys behind this can fight for what they really want to get out of this picture, and stray from the obvious, stray from the beaten path of what other resurgent horror franchises became, to just find the right way of making longtime fans happy without alienating everyday moviegoers, and vice versa. Hip hip for long sentences. Shit like this will make its money back in the opening weekend with or without merit, so what the fuck? Give us some merit.

I have a laundry list of things I want out of this movie, but let's narrow it down to a three item wishlist:

  1. Please please please have the ensemble of random horny teens not know anything about Jason, let alone that they're in any danger, until the final trimester of the film. I LOVED that about the first bunch of F13 flicks. The dichotomy of this cheesy teen romance/comedy movie occurring within a Jason Killing People movie always added to the replay value.
  2. Please please please don't make Jason supernatural in an explained way. If you have ideas on what he is, hint at them. Be vague. Give fans a reason to think, and to debate, and to write lousy fan fiction. Ambiguity goes a long way with this kind of stuff. One of the major reasons Leatherface became such a horror icon is because he was totally open to interpretation. If you're restarting Jason, leave out the Guide To Jason.
  3. Please please please give us a batshit weirdo ending. Don't just make it an "extra scare." Don't just make us think things are a-okay before TURNIN' DEM TABLES. Do something bizarre. I hope they work really hard on that, because fuck me if I can think of anything fans couldn't predict if given long enough.

In celebration, here're some Jason-related articles I've written throughout the site's storied thirty year history:

Muppet Baby, how are your classes going? (I’ve been meaning to ask for awhile…)

we all hope it will be good, but it will be something new in the franchise and i’ll fork over
my cash to watch it.. good, bad.. or other. i just picked up the dvd boxed set with the 1st 8 movies for only $25 on fye.com!

I had no idea Conan was still writing for the simpsons for that many seasons, i remember when he appeared as himself in the episode when Bart becomes famous, since i was young and didn’t know who he was, i thought he was actually a jerk in real life too. how wrong i was!

He only wrote for the show in Seasons 4 & 5, then left halfway through 5 to do the show. The Late Night bit was written when the crew heard he might be getting the show, and it would’ve been on had he had gotten it or not.

Conan only wrote 3 episodes: “New Kid on The Block,” “Marge vs. The Monorail” and “Homer Goes To College,” but, like the other writers, he contributed to several others, like “Cape Feare.” He also pitched the plots that became “Marge Gets A Job” and “Lisa’s Rival,” but didn’t write them, and was the inspiration for the name Jub-Jub, Selma’s pet Iguana, because it was a nonsense word Conan would say every now and then.

That said, Conan’s closing line “Sit perfectly still, only I may dance!” is one of my favorite Simpsons lines ever.

Wait, do kids even go to summer camp anymore? Jason might have to relocate to the suburbs and slaughter teens as they loaf around in front of their Wiis.

haha good point, jason gets a myspace and hunts everybody on his friend list down!

Chestnuts roasted by cheeky @ 01/11/2007 9:13 AM

Knacks better watch out, then. He’ll friend with ANYONE.

Speaking of up comming movies has anyone heard about the movie “MEG” that is suppose to be out in 2008? It sounds awesome! It’s about a prehistoric shark that eats, i donno, boats I guess. Chud.com has some cool art. I just hope it isn’t toatlly CG.

Can’t wait for the new Friday the 13th to come out. I agree that this film needs a face lift but I hope they don’t do what has been done to The Texas Chainsaw Massacare. The original was great but they had to fix what wasn’t broken. If they can keep this film classey without trying to get oscars for acting and keep the mystery behind Jason we might have a winner. Oh yeah, bring back Keven Bacon so we can watch him get an arrow through the windpipe again.

Matt: Did they film F13, Jason in NY actually in NY or was it in a Hollywood studio?

I’m happy another Jason film is in the works, but there are of course reservations. Matt touched on some important ones, but I have a few as well.

I hope they don’t make him supernatural. In fact, I hope that every Jason film from here on out is basically unconnected. They would be better off turning the series into a “legend of” thing, or like the Bond series. This would allow for so much freedom, as there would be no continuity to worry about.

As long as they hit on the main points of Jason, creative murderers, and ensemble casts (mostly teens), things will be fine. Crystal Lake and the forest camp setting are not necessary, but always welcome.

Happy “Anything Can Happen Day on the Mickey Mouse Club” everyone!

Awesome. That made my day (even though I didn’t read it until today.) And happy Party Day to you!

Matt,

Sorry to burst your bubble, but i was positive this project (F13 Remake) got canceled…

Chestnuts roasted by Cotter @ 01/11/2007 8:14 PM

http://www.bloody-disgusting.com/film/701

Hey Cotter. You sure? This site seems to be sure that it is set for release with the Crystal Lake setting to boot.

am i the only one on the planet that actually loved the f13 game for the nes?

yes you are!

i actually did somewhat enjoy the first texas chainsaw remake, but that 2nd one that came out last year, whoa what a waste of film

Chestnuts roasted by cheeky @ 01/11/2007 9:38 PM

Matt‘s original linked article on CHUD was posted on the 8th of this month and it said within it that it would move foward in 2008, so I’m pretty sure it’s back on, Cotter

All the sites linked in this thread include ads for Blood and Chocolate. Along with Napoleon Dynamite there seems to be no end to the Costello references Hollywood is willing to make (steal?). Costello’s Napoleon Dynamite painting actually adorns the cover of the album Blood and Chocolate.

And now you know :D

Chestnuts roasted by K- @ 01/11/2007 10:02 PM

There were unsubstantiated rumors the thing had been cancelled, but those seem to be not true as this information is indeed the most recent news on the project.

(Matt: Did they film F13, Jason in NY actually in NY or was it in a Hollywood studio?)

Only a few shots were filmed in NY for F13 Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan. The rest were filmed on location in Vancouver, if I’m not mistaken.

Chestnuts roasted by Retro_Playback @ 01/12/2007 12:00 AM

You’re correct, Retro_P. Budget reasons. Fun fact: The bit where Jason screws with random thugs in Times Square is right in front of my office.

That’s the extent of the York stuff, aside from a couple of establishing shots. All sewer/back alley stuff was shot elsewhere. (And dressed terribly. According to the movie, NY is a series of alleys with big, arbitrary oil cans. NY is the middle of Double Dragon Level 1.)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 01/12/2007 12:08 AM

Nevada to be exact. It was shot in Nevada.

Chestnuts roasted by Cotter @ 01/12/2007 1:23 AM

There’s a supposed script review of Zombie’s Halloween reamke over on Aint It Cool News. Strange, to say the least. Very strange.

Chestnuts roasted by Wukong @ 01/12/2007 1:45 AM

Hey, Dr. Sbaitso was on The Office tonight!
I’ll probably go see the F13 rewhatever, even though I’m really a complete puss when it comes to the scary…burned up melty lady from this week’s Masters of Horror has still got me sleeping with my back to the wall. I am interested in true crime stuff; the Black Dahlia, Jack the Ripper, David Parker Ray, Gein, etc. I just checked out Primeval on imdb because I’ve been trying to figure out why I’ve never heard of “the most terrifying serial killer in history”…it’s a goddamn crocodile. A crocodile!

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 01/12/2007 2:56 AM

I would love to see a Friday 13th with Jason going to Hollywood and killing Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan… etc.. you get where i’m goin with this. At the end Jason got to be killed so I say someone takes a samuri blade and slices off his head… that would rule.

Chestnuts roasted by LazerTag @ 01/12/2007 6:34 AM

NEED HELP!

Does anyone remember a phone commercial from the early 90s (i think), maybe AT&T, where someone was trying to call long distance but kept getting some dude in hawaii that would answer the phone with “Makalaka Pee Si!” (or something like that)? It was on all the time, and nobody knows what im talking about. Please, please, someone acknowledge that this commercial existed!!! Does anyone know who, what, when it was for??

Chestnuts roasted by Lou @ 01/12/2007 11:12 AM

I love how Friday the 13th part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan shares the same title as Muppets Take Manhattan. Which one is scarier; a 7 foot freak with an ax or puppets walking around with no masters? I am leaning to the latter. It’s like finding the Snuggle bear in your laundry. Sure he may be cute and have good intentions but that throws all reality as we know it right out the window.

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 01/12/2007 12:20 PM

Bill — I’m not convinced the Snuggle Bear has good intentions. I still think that bastid is just waiting to like cut me up good with a straight razor.
