A New Friday The 13th Flick YASE YASE.

CHUD has a great little interview with the producers of the upcoming Friday The 13th "remake," or "reimagining," or "some kind of sequel" or whatever you want to call it. Check it out here.

I'm so freakin excited about this. Now, sure, I've learned my lesson about producers talking about how much they love and respect a franchise they've inherited only to do everything to dictate otherwise, but let's be optimistic and take these tidbits at their awesome facey valuest. For one, they seem to want to play it straight -- NO SPOOFING, which is one of my cardinal rules on how to keep things from sucking. And, while some fans don't like the idea of restarting the story rather than continuing it, I have to ask: "Continue what?" If you like the oldest movies in the series and want to see more of that kind of stuff, restarting the bitch is the only way to get it.

Here's the kicker, though. They said that they'll be drawing most of their inspiration from the first three installments of the series. Okay, Part 1, whatever, but Part 2 and Part 3? Holy God yes. Yeah, they'll be creating their own origin tale, which is kind of risky because I don't think we really need or should even have that much information about how it all began or what it means, but we certainly seem poised for the best Jason Voorhees effort in, heck, twenty years.

There are ways to make this movie work. Unfortunately, there are also ways to make this movie not work, but still make a lot of money. I'm hoping the guys behind this can fight for what they really want to get out of this picture, and stray from the obvious, stray from the beaten path of what other resurgent horror franchises became, to just find the right way of making longtime fans happy without alienating everyday moviegoers, and vice versa. Hip hip for long sentences. Shit like this will make its money back in the opening weekend with or without merit, so what the fuck? Give us some merit.

I have a laundry list of things I want out of this movie, but let's narrow it down to a three item wishlist:

  1. Please please please have the ensemble of random horny teens not know anything about Jason, let alone that they're in any danger, until the final trimester of the film. I LOVED that about the first bunch of F13 flicks. The dichotomy of this cheesy teen romance/comedy movie occurring within a Jason Killing People movie always added to the replay value.
  2. Please please please don't make Jason supernatural in an explained way. If you have ideas on what he is, hint at them. Be vague. Give fans a reason to think, and to debate, and to write lousy fan fiction. Ambiguity goes a long way with this kind of stuff. One of the major reasons Leatherface became such a horror icon is because he was totally open to interpretation. If you're restarting Jason, leave out the Guide To Jason.
  3. Please please please give us a batshit weirdo ending. Don't just make it an "extra scare." Don't just make us think things are a-okay before TURNIN' DEM TABLES. Do something bizarre. I hope they work really hard on that, because fuck me if I can think of anything fans couldn't predict if given long enough.

In celebration, here're some Jason-related articles I've written throughout the site's storied thirty year history:

oh, and please god, no fucking video game. or at least not the same old horribly rushed movie tie-in but not really true to the movie storyline/horrible graphic having piece of crap that usually comes out with movies. :P

I’m only agreeing with you because I know it wouldn’t be on the Wii. If I had a PS3, I’d be all over that no matter how much it sucked.

A game where you play as Jason would be pretty cool. Assuming they don’t make it garbage by making Jason fight monsters, collect card keys, solve puzzles, get killed easily by police officers, or anything else that doesn’t have to do with killing horny teenagers.

I’ve known about this film for a little while now. I haven’t really read up on it, but it definitely sounds pretty damn sweet. And yeah, I agree with Matt, the franchise definitely needs a reboot; another sequel wouldn’t be nearly as interesting, I think.

Let’s hope this one jumpstarts a new series of F13 flicks and turns out as good as the 2003 Chainsaw remake. Yeah!

Just read the interview, they pretty much said they were going to explain Jason’s supernatural element.

They need to hire you Matt–

A third of the film should be in 3d.

I want teen boobs and sliced off heads. What more to say.

Chestnuts roasted by Xenophobe @ 01/10/2007 12:48 AM

You’re not gonna get teen boobs, more like twenty-something boobs

Chestnuts roasted by Joker @ 01/10/2007 1:03 AM

Ugh, I was going to ask if we could leave OUT the teen boobs this time. I’d rather leave the naked in the 70′s/80′s, instead of written in just to have some boobers in the movie (I’m thinking Final Destination 3).

Personally, I’m more interested in the upcoming Halloween Reimaging/prequel/whatquel/whatever you want to call it. Is that sitll on? I was never really a Fan of Jason, but Mike Myers is interesting to me for some reason. Who knows why?

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 01/10/2007 1:26 AM

aw man. they should give jason a grill and gallons of attitude. and a cell phone that he calls his dead moms on.

Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 01/10/2007 1:44 AM

I get the dread feeling that instead of just using the chainsaw, Jason is going to take today’s cliche route by tieing a victim to a table and slowly torturing them. That’s all the horror they make nowadays; there’s a strong risk this is what you’ll get.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 01/10/2007 1:49 AM

looks dope, i heard about the halloween remake didn’t even know about this one

and if they leave out the boobs i’m personally protesting! c’mon, this is friday the 13th!!!

oh and a game where u play AS jason would be cool! and a different take on games i don’t think i’ve really seen before

Chestnuts roasted by cheeky @ 01/10/2007 2:06 AM

it’s bizarre how, in subtle ways, your site has influenced me.

last night, i found myself randomnly referencing that old 80′s halloween hallmark commerical you posted.. by doing that little arm gesture that the guy in the “this is my costume!” shirt does at the end of piece.. – why? i have no idea.. and nobody else had any clue what i was doing.. but i was content.

Chestnuts roasted by Review the World @ 01/10/2007 2:44 AM

Hmm, you know what it would be weird in the new movie?

The killer is revealed to not be Jason OR his mom…but a twin brother…who just happens to be named Jay, with the Pete & Pete kinda vibe going on.

I was gonna suggest something else, but it’s 2:30am and I must’ve forgotten.

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 01/10/2007 3:19 AM

did we not learn anything from friday part 6, we want the real jason dammit!

Chestnuts roasted by cheeky @ 01/10/2007 3:31 AM

It does sound like they’re being thoughtful about it. Hopefully that’s promising :D

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 01/10/2007 3:34 AM

or was it part 5? its late and my jason trivia is wonky

Chestnuts roasted by cheeky @ 01/10/2007 3:34 AM

I am usually sternly against remakes/reimaginings, but in this case (and hell, in the case of Rob Zombie’s “Halloween” remake as well), it may be necessary to undo the damage that recent installments have done.

I mean, Jason X caused a great, great deal of damage to the Friday the 3th franchise, and Freddy vs Jason didn’t help fix it any. The same can be said (to various degrees) for Halloween Ressurection and Halloween H:20. At this point, a reboot might be the best thing that can happen.

And I like what these guys are saying. I’d like sort of an amalgamation of the series’ best elements put into a blender and reimagined to create something both old and new. So I will be cautiously optimistic, as I believe this to be for the greater good.

Hope all you want, but every action, horror, and sci-fi movie ends up with a video game version. Or three. People luvs teh monies, and movie tie-ins are a quick and obvious path.

Chestnuts roasted by The Kraken @ 01/10/2007 5:40 AM

I just wish these vid games based off of movies wouldn’t come out BEFORE the movies! And they worked on SuperMan for like a year and it still ended up shitty.

Chestnuts roasted by flabslapper @ 01/10/2007 9:05 AM

If a game is released it better be more impressive than the NES installment of Ft13…I’m willing to bet even THAT one won’t make it to the Wii either…hehehe…of course it would be hard for it to be worse than that Atari 2600 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre you reviewed….

Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 01/10/2007 9:06 AM

I’m all for a F13th remake…its time to freshen up the franchise. I’ve got faith in the Rob Zombie school of re-imagining the Halloween story & this could totally work with F13th. Add a little meat to the burger so to speak…don’t just give us the latest WB/CW TV stars running around in the underwear being chased by a PG-13 rated monster. Matt…Good call on having the victims being totally oblivious to Jason while partaking in the debauchery that ultimately leads to their deaths!

Chestnuts roasted by Gregor! @ 01/10/2007 9:30 AM

While I understand the need for the reboot (and look at what it’s done for the Bond franchise), I’m still kinda depressed by the complete and total lack of originality and imagination on the part of the movie and television industry these days. I guess the days of creating a new super horror villan are long past us, if we do nothing but reimagine or recreate the same villans over and over again.

Chestnuts roasted by LemurCat @ 01/10/2007 10:13 AM

I’ll be watching this movie just on the hope that Crispin Glover will make a cameo to expand on his spectacular dance scene from part IV.
