Swag & Branded Target Confetti. (Uh huh.)

This was my first day back at work after a nice, long vacation, and as is always the case when you have to wake up and be responsible again after a nice, long vacation, I was just totally dreading the shit out of today. Course, the dread was pointless -- work was work, no better or worse than before. Eh, maybe it was a little better, because I got tons of presents.

A bunch of the companies I've worked with in the past year sent swag over in late December, but since I was out, walking into work today was like Christmas morning all over again. The loot included a few t-shirts/sweatshirts with logos for various companies you've never heard of on them, along with a few bottles of wine, an awesome black throw blanket that is logofied but not in an annoying way, a lava lamp (!!!), a Starbucks gift card, a big ass gold tin robot that's so unbelievably awesome that I had to try really hard not to prefix "awesome" with "fucking," and the ultimate prize -- a Mimoco flash drive that looks like a ghost!

Ahhhhhhh so great so great so great. I've received many complimentary flash drives in my day (virtually every company that has ever seen fit to reward my relationship with them gave me a flash drive), but I think this is the first one that I'll really find a use for. I'm in love with this thing. It comes with some kind of goth teddy bear costume (a protective sleeve), and it can hold a gig's worth of stuff that I'm not comfortable with putting on my office desktop! I love my Mimoco Ghost flash drive! Only 1 of 500 ever made! Site says so!

If you were watching Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Blasteriffic Clashband Partymart, know that my office is like twelve feet away from where Ryan Seacrest stood. I am privileged and rare. As such, the confetti from the midnight hour was still all over the streets. The sanitation wizards managed to clean up Times Square pretty darn well, but you can't get all of that crap up, and that totally works for me, because I never get anywhere near the city on New Year's Eve. Getting to stomp the party's official confetti made me feel like I was part of the action, however fashionably late.

Because many buildings in the area feature porous revolving doors, pretty much every store and office in Times Square had a lobby full of dirty party paper today. The picture above was actually snapped in a bank. When I looked closer at the shreds, I was surprised to find that it was...branded?

Yes, the confetti of the 2006 Times Square New Year's Eve bash was brought to us by Target. Okay, so on the one hand, maybe you could argue that branding confetti is going a step too far. I disagree, because it's very nice confetti. Some of the pieces had happy phrases; others were shiny and foily with stupid Target logos on them. Either way, it's all so much more noteworthy than random blank strips of yellow and lavender paper.

Bit by the materialism bug that comes with getting free shit from companies I barely know, we hit a few stores tonight to cash in on some of the gift cards we got for Christmas. A bunch of you fuckers told me to get Red Steel for the Wii, so I did. I haven't opened it yet, but now that I'm reading the reviews, I'm wondering why that certain bunch of you told me to get the most poorly rated game on the entire console. I exaggerate, but man. People aren't being kind to Red Steel. You have around 12 hours to convince me to play it or to exchange it. If you vote EXCHANGE, what should I get? (Catch: I played Rayman; it's awesome, but not the kind of thing I can foresee playing much by myself. Pick something else please thanks yes.)

Also picked up another Wii remote, which is excellent, because now, the poor souls who enter our apartment will only be charged with challenging me for the championship trophy in Wii Sports bowling, whereas they formerly could only watch me hone my skills in awe. Oh sure, you can bowl with two players on one remote, but that is so disgusting and cumbersome that I'm going to pretend you can't.

PS: If I haven't Wii friend coded or whatever the hell you call it back yet, it doesn't mean that I don't like you. It means that I haven't friend coded anyone back yet. I will get on that soon, and I look forward to having your Miis mingle with my Miis and perhaps create baby Miis which would make us related by some gorily nerdy stretch. We'll have times, you and I.

I wasn’t about to go out and fight all of drunken humanity for a poor view.

Instead, I stayed at home with my drunken friends and watched These Guys

There were a couple of other live new year’s shows that were streaming live on the internet. I had a great time drinking in every time zone in North America.

Party on you crazy guys!

I really hope the Wii succeeds because i think Nintendo has gotten a bum rap recently. I defninely think the game cube wasn’t supported the way it should’ve been. I honestly think it is better than the PS2 or x-box… I’m sure if the Wii fails they will take the Sega route and just make games for all systems and not make hardware (except maybe the handhelds). Good luck Nintendo…….

phunqsauce: The Wii will NOT fail! The PS3 will, due to its expense and when the prices do drop, every game that came out for it wiould also be on the 360, which would have dropped its price to “resonable” in that time.

In one year, whichever one of us is right, we owe the other one a Coke.

I was supporting the Wii in that post…

Old E

The other side of relay calls is that people don’t understand that EVERYTHING they say is being typed. So I’ll get stuff on my screen like “Tell him that we aren’t able to do such and such and ask him if he wants X instead” Frustrating, sometimes, but great fun.

Actually, anymore I just stick to email. I have “HEARING IMPAIRED–EMAIL PREFERRED” plastered on all my business correspondence. My favorite time was when a lady called, I couldn’t understand her, and I asked her to email me. So a few hours later I get an email from her, explaining that she needs some clarification on a few things and wanting me to CALL HER to verify. Sigh…We just went through this, lady….. :)

Exchange Red Steel, people only like that shit because of the commercial and being able to hold the gun sideways.

Use that money for Virtual Console games.

Matt,
I got Super Monkey Ball for Christmas, and let me tell you, it’s very disapointing. Sure, it’s got lots of mini-games, but some of them are lame, and hardly any of them get explained very well before you play them. I’d hold out for WarioWare, it’s gonna rock.

Chestnuts roasted by Tommy @ 01/04/2007 3:25 AM

Invader Norbert I totally agree. I think Nintendo was smart to remove itself from the race and appeal to a different market.

I pretty much only play online shooters and am in love with the 360, Gears of War & Rainbow Six Vegas are awwwwesome, and the online Street Fighter 2 quarter matches aren’t too shabby either.

I have the $ but even if I found one I refuse to pay $600 for a console, I may be totally off base but I think Sony realllly screwed this one up. And as I only play online I think the Xbox Live & Arcade services are genius, far better than PS2 online’s offering of pretty much nothing.

I never had an Xbox and was avid about the PS2, but this gen it’s all about 360 for me. At this point it really looks like the 360 and Wii are the main contenders.

I so cannot bond about the video games. I never made it past NES. I did get a Ipod yesterday, so I’m catching up in that area, I still have no idea how to use it though.

I can’t make any great Wii game recommendations because I’ve only just picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance. I like it, it’s kinda cool that your attack moves can be done by movement, but I just end up mashing buttons AND slinging the Wiimote around at the same time. I’d recommend the game, but I have nothing else to compare it to. My choice was between that and Excite Truck, which I’ll be getting next time I let down the “control spending” guard.

Before picking up any extra Wiimotes for 40 bucks, keep in mind that Wii Play comes out in February and comes with a Wiimote and it’s only 50 bucks. I’m holding out for that before I buy my 2nd controller. :) Yay for a new Duck Hunt type game, but more accurate!

Chestnuts roasted by peter @ 01/04/2007 9:27 AM

Okay let me clear something up, your whole assertion that “every game that came out for it wiould [sic] also be on the 360″ is BS. There are a large number of PS3 exclusive games. Most notably Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII and MGS4: Guns of the Patriots. The PS3 will be fine as their stable of games increases over time and the Wii’s novelty decreases over time.

The Growth Curves will be complete mirror opposites of each other. That’s just my two cents, but at least I’m admitting it’s an opinion and not a blanket claim that is blatently false. That’s what Nintendo gets for pulling itself out of the graphics arms race.

This is ain’t scene, it’s a goddamn arms race!! ;)

Chestnuts roasted by K- @ 01/04/2007 9:41 AM

Clearly the first part of my rant is serious, the second, a little more cheeky. Yes, storytelling counts (ALOT) but it alone will only take you so far in the world of gaming sans the graphical power to back it up. Same thing with gimmicky controls :P

Chestnuts roasted by K-: Sony Fanboy apparently behind enemy lines @ 01/04/2007 9:50 AM

As someone who has spent a large amount of time with both Red Steel and Elebits, I implore you to get Elebits. It is the most unbridled fun I have had since Katamari Damacy. I’m sure it will go down in price in a year, but if you’re looking to have a hell of a time now, pick it up somehow. The first few levels are mostly the same, but it goes nuts about 10 in.

Chestnuts roasted by adny @ 01/04/2007 10:05 AM

i think the market nintendo is going for won’t be as concerned with graphics though, and the quicker they build up an installed user base the more software companies they can attract

that said every time i play gears of war i just kinda sit there with my mouth open, it’s THAT beautiful

it very well may be that sony pulls thru this one, i was rooting for them at the start.. but after time magazine calls your system one of the top 10 failures of the year and sony demoted the brainchild behind the playstation brand you kinda get the feeling they really f*cked it up this time

Chestnuts roasted by cheeky @ 01/04/2007 10:44 AM

I was really suprised to see Solid Snake from the Metal Gear series thrown into the new Super Smash Bros: Brawl game for Wii!!! I’m also happy that Pit from Kid Icarus is getting some notariety too…Kid Icarus is one of the unsung heroes of Nintendo’s early NES line up, its nice to see him kick the crap outta Mario and all the more famous mascots, especially Pikachu (don’t get me wrong I love mario, in fact i’ve been obsessed with mario 64 recently and recently got to play New Super Mario Bros. for the DS) Until I have the money for a wii I will just have to drool at the game trailers…

Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 01/04/2007 10:48 AM

If you want to call the launch a failure, go ahead. It’s not the best of times when someone gets shot over your product. Hell even GI gave PS3s launch the number one spot on their list of Dissapointments of the Year.

But they also gave the PS3 a B for its launch potential alone. The Wii got a A-. However, they have noted what I have noted, over time the PS3 will be getting games that won’t want to be missed by the gaming public, l33t though it may be. The Wii will have to contend with its novelty wearing off and the lagging graphics.

Again, what I’m saying is just my opinion, and both systems have challenges to overcome. I’m not anti-Wii, I was intially, but I see its potential if Nintendo is willing/able to continue to innovate. And they always have been, and I seriously doubt they won’t be able to in the future.

My prediction is that both consoles survive on the backs of different segments of the gaming population.

How’s that for middle-of-the-road :D

KB:

I’m with you. I dig games but I can not last more than a half hour playing them. I had a Wii because I was trying to rekindle a child-like obsession I had for Time Splitters 2 (PS2)but to no avail. I guess I am too busy in everyday life and too beat when I get home. I ended up giving it to my 6 year old cousin Kyle and told him that Santa had to try it out fist so ignore the unwrapped packaging. He wouldn’t have noticed anyway.
Are you guys going to kick me out of the X-E club for this? :)

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 01/04/2007 12:59 PM

Personally I think there’s room in the X-E gaming lounge for all systems. Even [gasp] Virtual Boy. (Although we may want to keep a couple bottles of Asprin next to it.) I don’t think there will be any kicking to be had.

Chestnuts roasted by Rhino @ 01/04/2007 1:08 PM

Don’t feel bad, Bill. My folks offered me a new PS3, a Wii bundle with all kindsa stuff or a cruise for Christmas and I chose the cruise. My mom apparently remembers me spending many a summer night in college downing a sixer of Harp, chain smoking Camel Lights and cursing my way through FFXIII on the old PS1. She couldn’t remember which system the FF series was on now, so she offered both. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately for her), I haven’t had the time nor the inclination to even consider a system. Though I am charmed by the Wii’s capabilities and potential, I don’t have the ability or willingness to get emotionally invested in the games the way I used to.

Chestnuts roasted by LemurCat @ 01/04/2007 1:18 PM

LemurCat

I know the feeling. However, I just have to own every system that comes out. It’s somethinig I expect, and people expect of me. The only system I never owned was a Neo Geo. That thing was huge and expensive.

I think Sony’s real problem is their arrogance. Assuming people will go out and pay $600 just because it says Playstation on it is absurd. Sure there are some must have games for the system, FFxXIII and MGS4, but like myself, I believe most people will wait. And unless those 2 games are mind blowingly phenominal, it may be too late for Sony this generation.

I was anti-Wii in the beginning. The controller just screamed gimmick that will be forgotten in time. However, after seeing people I know who haven’t played video games in years have an absolute blast playing it, and trying it myself, I have to say, I really, really, want one.

I just hope the controller doesn’t end up as a gimmick and Nintendo, as well as publishers, make good on the promised innovation.

Bottom line, I’ll own both eventually, so the winner is me!!

Is it time for the 2007 Advent Calender yet?

=P

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Galvatron @ 01/04/2007 1:51 PM

Lemur, do you mean VIII? XIII is going to be on PS3. VII, VIII, and IX were on PSX(1)–As well as ports of I, II, IV, V, and VI, hampered by a disabilitating delay when entering their menus. Either way, I’m glad to find yet another FF fan on here :D

And yes I own all of those ports :P

Chestnuts roasted by K- @ 01/04/2007 2:13 PM

Yup, K, I did mean VIII. Damned cold medicine clogging up the brain. I’ve loved the FF series long and hard but find it beyond me now. How very, very sad for both myself and Square.

I got that exact same Lava Lamp for Christmas this year. I feel eerily connected….well, not really. Gotta love a wife that would buy me a lava lamp for Christmas. That and an 18 inch Darth Vader Pez dispenser and that Ultimate Superman DVD collection with something like 56 discs! Hay-zeus, I love that woman!

Ok, not 56, only 14, but damn! Weekend Superman marathon coming up (as soon as Warner Brothers replaces the 2 defective discs, the bastards).

K- do you have a psp? how nice is it that we can play psx games on there now?!

i haven’t checked if they’ve got resident evil 2 available yet but that’s my joint right there
