Swag & Branded Target Confetti. (Uh huh.)

This was my first day back at work after a nice, long vacation, and as is always the case when you have to wake up and be responsible again after a nice, long vacation, I was just totally dreading the shit out of today. Course, the dread was pointless -- work was work, no better or worse than before. Eh, maybe it was a little better, because I got tons of presents.

A bunch of the companies I've worked with in the past year sent swag over in late December, but since I was out, walking into work today was like Christmas morning all over again. The loot included a few t-shirts/sweatshirts with logos for various companies you've never heard of on them, along with a few bottles of wine, an awesome black throw blanket that is logofied but not in an annoying way, a lava lamp (!!!), a Starbucks gift card, a big ass gold tin robot that's so unbelievably awesome that I had to try really hard not to prefix "awesome" with "fucking," and the ultimate prize -- a Mimoco flash drive that looks like a ghost!

Ahhhhhhh so great so great so great. I've received many complimentary flash drives in my day (virtually every company that has ever seen fit to reward my relationship with them gave me a flash drive), but I think this is the first one that I'll really find a use for. I'm in love with this thing. It comes with some kind of goth teddy bear costume (a protective sleeve), and it can hold a gig's worth of stuff that I'm not comfortable with putting on my office desktop! I love my Mimoco Ghost flash drive! Only 1 of 500 ever made! Site says so!

If you were watching Dick Clark's Rockin' New Year's Blasteriffic Clashband Partymart, know that my office is like twelve feet away from where Ryan Seacrest stood. I am privileged and rare. As such, the confetti from the midnight hour was still all over the streets. The sanitation wizards managed to clean up Times Square pretty darn well, but you can't get all of that crap up, and that totally works for me, because I never get anywhere near the city on New Year's Eve. Getting to stomp the party's official confetti made me feel like I was part of the action, however fashionably late.

Because many buildings in the area feature porous revolving doors, pretty much every store and office in Times Square had a lobby full of dirty party paper today. The picture above was actually snapped in a bank. When I looked closer at the shreds, I was surprised to find that it was...branded?

Yes, the confetti of the 2006 Times Square New Year's Eve bash was brought to us by Target. Okay, so on the one hand, maybe you could argue that branding confetti is going a step too far. I disagree, because it's very nice confetti. Some of the pieces had happy phrases; others were shiny and foily with stupid Target logos on them. Either way, it's all so much more noteworthy than random blank strips of yellow and lavender paper.

Bit by the materialism bug that comes with getting free shit from companies I barely know, we hit a few stores tonight to cash in on some of the gift cards we got for Christmas. A bunch of you fuckers told me to get Red Steel for the Wii, so I did. I haven't opened it yet, but now that I'm reading the reviews, I'm wondering why that certain bunch of you told me to get the most poorly rated game on the entire console. I exaggerate, but man. People aren't being kind to Red Steel. You have around 12 hours to convince me to play it or to exchange it. If you vote EXCHANGE, what should I get? (Catch: I played Rayman; it's awesome, but not the kind of thing I can foresee playing much by myself. Pick something else please thanks yes.)

Also picked up another Wii remote, which is excellent, because now, the poor souls who enter our apartment will only be charged with challenging me for the championship trophy in Wii Sports bowling, whereas they formerly could only watch me hone my skills in awe. Oh sure, you can bowl with two players on one remote, but that is so disgusting and cumbersome that I'm going to pretend you can't.

PS: If I haven't Wii friend coded or whatever the hell you call it back yet, it doesn't mean that I don't like you. It means that I haven't friend coded anyone back yet. I will get on that soon, and I look forward to having your Miis mingle with my Miis and perhaps create baby Miis which would make us related by some gorily nerdy stretch. We'll have times, you and I.

I actually own Red Steel and Monkey Ball and hardly ever play either. I enjoyed Rayman much more than either of those other games, and Elebits is quite fun as well, but seems (so far) to be the same thing over and over. I’d say go with Elebits, then Rayman….and don’t forget you still have Zelda patiently waiting.

When I first download something it’ll probably be either Gunstar Heroes or Super Castlevania IV, at least among the choices that are currently there. Several of those games on VC I already have from Gamecube compilation releases like Zelda Collection and Sonic Mega Collection; Ristar is on there too. And any NES game I could ever want, I can play on the Dreamcast–at twice the speed if I push this one button. Fast-forward is the ONLY way to play Pac-Man.

I need a flash drive badly…maybe not a rare ghost-shaped one, but A one…

WTH who recommended Red Steel? The game NEVER looked good, not in one hyped preview I ever read. No surprise that it hit and turned out it sucked. The controls are awkward and the graphics are sooo bad its not even funny. Ditch it quick.

Elebits is creative and awesome and Rayman Rabbits is interesting as well. Trauma Center is the DS version on steroids but is madd fun. Any of those should keep you busy.

Super Monkey Ball is played out by now. If you havent tried it, its basically Marble Madness but with monkeys and more emphasis on gravity.

Go for Excite Truck. Anyone who hasn’t checked it out, do so immediately. Crazy-addictive multiplayer fun, plus you can use your own music on an SD card.

This game has been getting the most playtime among my friends. Check ‘er out.

Fun fact: The number of flashing lights on the Wiimote during start up indicates the amount of battery life.
Not so fun fact: I have almost drained the free set. (at least they lasted 30+ hours…not bad for cheapos) Time to bring on the NiMh rechargables!

RedSteel isn’t near as bad as the reviews would have you believe, it just didn’t live up to the hype…which usually causes reviewers to rip it a new one.
Having said that, I would suggest you exchange it for Elebits. If you liked Katamari Damacy for the PS2, you’ll definitely enjoy Elebits. While, in reality, the two are nothing alike…they are both loads of the type of fun that makes you feel bad afterwards.

Oh, sorry for the double post, but I left this out of the first one. Stop neglecting Zelda! That is all.

Happy Bday to all who have Bdays between now and when I post again. (it’s 3:25 in the freaking morning, what can I say??)

I’ll post again that I’m holding out for Brawl, but these blogs have been giving me ideas of other games to pass the time too.

I think you’d enjoy elebits, I’ve played the multiplayer only but it seemed like it’d be fun. Trauma Center is fun if you like to play doctor mixed with ridiculousness. I like it. Call of Duty 3 is CoD again. Metal slug anthology is cool if you like Metal Slug. I actually have all those games now cause I had a Wii heavy christmas so these are first impressions, although I have Trauma Center for DS and it’s the same game except with better graphics, so I’ve played that one a fair bit.

Honestly I’d buy Gunstar Heroes, Zelda, Bomberman, and maybe Golden Axe and call it good until you get to Twilight Princess. After that some more good stuff may have come out. The launch lineup is really launchy, like they always are.

MATT

I own Red Steel and I say you should keep it. Admittedly I’ve only played it for 20 min cuz I had me some Zelda to play, but the game is really cool. It just requires some getting used to. The only thing is that, how the controls are set up (kind of like an arcade shooter, but you can walk around, and by that I mean, bad guys come at you in sections, not in droves) its really hard to run and gun, you have to hide behind walls and be patient to get kills. So I guess it depends if you want to have a game that forces you to take your time, or a return it for something more fast-paced.

If you’re going to return it, I suggest waiting for something else to come out, like WarioWare which comes out in two weeks. I like Rayman, but its easy, Trauma Center is interesting, but I requires waaaaay too much thinking and it stesses me out. PLAY ZELDA FOR CRIPES SAKE! And you already have Exsite Truck…oh ya, get Elebits cuz that game is trippy and kind of heart pounding.

Uh, one more thing, you watch Twilight Zone? I thought I’d just mention they’re is a Complete boxset of it now for like $200 on http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com

Chestnuts roasted by flabslapper @ 01/03/2007 9:02 AM

Twilight Zone is one of those shows that I enjoy much more as a turn-on-anytime-during-the-day 24 hour marathon on Scifi than a sit-down-and-watch-a-bunch-of-episodes DVD. Some of those shows still give me goosebumps when I see them. Damn good writing….

I don’t know if my opinion counts, since I still don’t have a Wii (they’re like 200% more expensive down here because of some crazy import logic), but I say you should totally get Marvel Ultimate Alliance. They’ve got EVERYBODY on that thing, and you can actually play with Deadpool. DEADPOOL! The Merc With a Mouth! That’s comedy gold!

Also, about the getting back to work thing. I wish I had that, because that’d mean I’d actually have paid vacation once a year. I’m a freelancer, so I had to work on Christmas and New Year’s weeks (although I kinda faked on Christmas week), and had to start again yesterday. And since I work at home, I’ve got the wife and the kid staring at me all day and preventing me from actually slacking or working properly. Not fun. Know what else is not fun? The friggin’ movie I’m subtitling now. Post Impact, starting TV Superman Dean Cain and a Husky on frozen post-comet end-of-the-world Berlin. Sooooo not fun…

Chestnuts roasted by Roddy @ 01/03/2007 10:44 AM

Matt, I would take back Redsteel if I were you. I was a real defender of it before it came out and it was one of the first games I bought at launch and haven’t really played it at all (starting to regret buying it so soon). I would recommend Elebits or just save that money and put it towards Smooth Moves when it comes out mid-January.

Chestnuts roasted by BoBo_SmaK @ 01/03/2007 10:44 AM

How much do Virtual Console games cost, on average? I’ve never seen it mentioned and it’s bugging Mii.

Chestnuts roasted by Rein @ 01/03/2007 11:05 AM

Between 4-8 dollars or so. (Each 100 Wii points roughly = $1) The older system games cost less, while the newer (like, Super Mario 64) cost more.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 01/03/2007 11:07 AM

Matt, I have to ask: WHERE did you get a Wii-mote? I’ve been all over Queens and I have a friend in the city and I consistently strike out. And now my pre-packaged one has to be repaired so I’m Wii-less! [argh]

On another note, I have to jump on the Elebits bandwagon. I’ve heard nothing but good things.

P.S. Does that robot do anything, or does it just look awesome. Cuz that’s ok, too.

Chestnuts roasted by Rhino @ 01/03/2007 11:21 AM

We struck out on the Wiimotes at TRU. So much so that they just about laughed at me when I asked if they had them. Best Buy had a bunch — it’s probably a good week to look for them because chances are, at least a small % of people are returning unwanted Christmas gifts in the form of Wiimotes.

Robot has an old style key thing that lets it stalk around like a motherfucker. (It’s part of a large line of vintage-looking bots that could easily pass as antiques.)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 01/03/2007 11:29 AM

If anything you should probably return Red Steel for Wii points and buy Castlvania 4, Mario 64, SMB, Pinball, and I think Baseball is on there cuz I know how much you love that gem. Oh and Altered Beast WISE FWOM YOW GWAAVE!

Chestnuts roasted by flabslapper @ 01/03/2007 11:58 AM

Roddy

You subtitle films for a living?

As a hearing impaired person, you are a god among men to me.

Seriously, it may suck, but trust me, we deaf guys really appreciate it.

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 01/03/2007 12:06 PM

Wish I could jump on the Wii bandwagon. A friend of mine brought his to my New Years party, and it really increased the fun level- made me want one really bad. Although, I mostly want it for the old school games I would buy. It would be like an NES, SNES and N64 all in one!

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 01/03/2007 12:39 PM

I too have to vote for Elebits after playing Red Steel. Red Steel is really generic and doesn’t flow too well at all. Plys the voice acting is horrid. As much as I like getting called a bastard countless times, it does get old rather quickly. Elebits has crappy voice acting too, but at least the game is good.
I finally got two classic controllers for christmas so now my girl and I can rock out on Toejam and Earl. Sup’ Earl?

Chestnuts roasted by That Guy @ 01/03/2007 1:04 PM

I’m half-tempted to get a Wii, just wish I could justify the expense when I’m never home to play it. I would never sleep if I bought that thing, as I’d be up all night bowling.

Nice schwag haul, Matt. I heart that robot. All I got this year was a barbeque set and a pair of folding speakers for my iPod. I shouldn’t complain, as we don’t really get much in the way of corporate gifts (unless we can steal them)and I always seem to make out pretty well with them.

Chestnuts roasted by LemurCat @ 01/03/2007 1:09 PM

I still haven’t been able to find a Wii. I have actually found PS3′s, but I have zero interest in getting one of those right now. Especially for $600+. And I’m someone who’s owned every console ever made and can afford it. Even imported Japanese ones.

Being at work today sucks. I was sick yesterday and didn’t come in. I just don’t feel like doing anything today. I’ve pretty much done nothing since 9:30 AM.

I’m sure that would make my boss happy.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Galvatron @ 01/03/2007 2:29 PM

I have been playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance lately for the 360. And while I’m sure it’s different on the Wii, the misses and I have really been enjoying it. One question for those who have played it…is The Punisher in the game at all? I can’t understand why they’d include some crap characters like Blade and Ms. Marvel and leave poor Frank Castle riding the pine.
