12/30/2006: Nintendo Wii, Week 1, Part 1.

I got the Wii for Christmas. It was a torturous month, because I’d witnessed no less than 25,000,000 Wii systems on sale at the Toys ‘R’ Us across the street from where I work (this particular TRU had hosted one of the bigger launch events, so they had more Wiis than they could sell — even after raising the maximum per-person purchase to three systems). I had money in my wallet and the damn thing was right there for the taking, but since I knew it was already coming my way for Christmas, buying myself one was strictly forbidden.

I’ve owned systems and have played video games consistently throughout my life, but really, I fell off the wagon during the 16-bit era and never came back. It wasn’t that video games were above or below me — I was just the type of person who, for whatever reason, enjoyed other kinds of couch-side timewasters more than video games. But the Wii? I don’t know. Something sparked. Maybe it was the alluring gimmickry, or the promises of a new Smash Bruddas game. Maybe it was because I loved those sproingy sounds the “ii” in “Wii” made in the commercials. I’m not really sure, but this was the first time in forever that I could look a video game system straight in the eye and tell it that I’d be spending more time with it than any living creature on the planet. I knew I’d get along with the Wii, and my first week with it was no disappointment.

Since I’m a dumbshit when it comes to video games and their progressing technologies and their whistling bells, I have to admit that I was absolutely smitten with all of the little, stupid things you can do with this system. I got the new Zelda game, but I’ve barely touched it. I’ve been too focused on making goofy avatars, seeing what different websites look like stretched out on a big television, and waiting five minutes for the weather channel to load just so I can confirm that what the real Weather Channel told me a minute before turning the system on was correct.

And that’s pretty much what I want to cover with this post — the little things. Not because you don’t already know about them, but because I can’t help but think that these little things exist in such a still-burgeoning environment that, for all intents, we’re just months away from however they exist now being just a memory. That’s a garbly sentence, but this is what happens during those rare occasions when I choose to write articles on my laptop from a sleepy recliner rather than a wake-centric desk. So comfortable!

I love the “channels” interface. I love that I can turn on the Wii without putting any games inside it, and still have tons of stupid things to do. I love that there’s dozens of vacant channels, challenging me to fill them with the fun things of the future. I love that I get to navigate these channels by pretending a remote control is a wizard wand. I’ve always done that, but there’s never been a payoff before the Wii.

At this stage, many of the channels only exist to give us some idea of what the Wii can do. I don’t think Nintendo really believes that their weather or news channels are entirely needed, but the idea that we can access such things from a video game system is what counts. I’d prefer horoscopes or some kind of “TRUE FACT OF THE DAY!!” thing, but that’s just me, and I don’t run any shows.

One of the first things you’re supposed to do upon powering up the Wii? Create your “Mii.” Miis are like your various instant messenger and forum avatars; alternatively, they’re like cheap versions of some games’ ability to let you create a character. You can make one Mii or a bunch, and you can consider them reflections of yourself or totally fabricated people that you want to identify yourself with for whatever dumb reasons you may have. Since your Miis are arguably existing and conversing and running around a big white room even when you’re not looking at them, I prefer to think of them as the Tamagotchis of a new generation. I don’t have to feed them or clean their shit, but I still feel like they’re better Miis if I, I dunno, change their hair colors or something every once in a while.

Maybe I’m speaking gibberish, but I kinda hope that Nintendo unveils broader ways to customize the Miis in the future. Right now, the options are pretty limited. Yeah, you can totally make your Miis tall or short, thin or fat. Yeah, there’s plenty of hairstyles, shirt colors and mole placements to choose from. But where’s the other stuff? Why can’t I make my Mii blue-skinned with devil horns and a shirt that says “Love Me Some Chicken” on it? Will I be able to do such things in the future? I mean, come on, we’ve all played a game or two of Yahoo! Chess. If we can pick a blue skinned-devil to represent us there, surely we should be able to do it from the next generation of quality living.

I created a bunch of Miis, because one wasn’t enough, and because I can never be sure if I want to see a male or a female go bowling. The Miis congregate in something Nintendo calls “Mii Plaza,” which is this big ass tiled hall full of nothing but the Miis you put in it. Sometimes, they’ll all just scatter around and inspect their surroundings. Other times, you’ll catch a few of them conversing and never letting you hear what they’re saying to each other. You can even make them stand at attention or organize themselves in alphabetical order. I don’t know why I’m so enamored with this. Meanwhile, the Zelda disc collects dust.

To top it all off, when you want to edit or erase one of your Miis, you just snatch them up from the floor, hold them by their heads and play God as their feet and arms go bananas until you’re done with them. The purpose of the Mii serves more unseen purposes than outright visual ones, but when the “visual ones” include grabbing my creations by their heads and deciding whether to give them a beard or erase them from existence altogether, I know which purposes are more important.

I agree with Mikey. If anyone remembers the Sega Dreamcast, it had a similar feature… don’t exactly remember what the things were called, but I remember them having a connection with the Sonic games.

He was really excited, though I made the mistake of making him open my gift first. As excited as he was, he still had unopened presents to get to.

I love my Wii got it on launch day and play it for hours it is very fun. I will be adding you to my friends in a minute.

I got a 360 for my birthday awhile back but have been tempted by the Wii too. Unfortunately my black phat PS2 started playing games with me instead of letting me play games on it and I had to drop some dough to replace it. Right after Christmas and in the middle of Okami too. :( Atleast I had the fundage due to Christmas money to upgrade. No complaints though, my PS2 has been through hell and back since 2002 or whenever I got it. 2002 I think. Maybe 01. Dont remember offhand.

But yea the Wii looks sweet. How come you cant randomly surf da interweb on the 360 though? That bothers me. Maybe im doing something wrong.

Oh yah and Im “Kitten of Fury” on XBLive if anyone wants to play volleyball or sumfin. I havent found an open game since I got DOA Xtreme 2, thus dashing all my dreams of online volleyball…

Well I just got home from my sister’s. I too got technology for Christmas, but it was of the house kind. I got a new vacuum (SO. HAPPY.) and a stick blender. I am SO blending the shit out of something and then vacuuming up the mess!

You just live to seperate people from their money, don’t you? I have my birthday coming up in 3 weeks, but a Wii is a hefty thing to ask for!

Any chance of buying a PS3 and reviewing it?

Also, a Zelda game should never grow dusty. I haven’t played a Zelda game since Ocarina of Time. It saddens me, but my gaming path led me through the land of Sony and has yet to change.

I’m going to be 24 on Jan 21, right on the cusp. Ugh. I really enjoy being 23, I don’t wanna go up a year.

Can’t say this Christmas wasn’t worth a laugh or two. I was at the girlfriends mother’s house in Michigan for a week. We were relaxing in the living room, drinking beer and sharing stories when the discussion turned to Kramer, the aunts elderly cocker spaniel. He is mostly blind but her father thinks Kramer is just retarded. About half way through the debate the doorbell rang and Kramer jumped off the couch and viciously attacked the Christmas tree.

I just got a PSP that I’m still enjoying (posting from it now) but I’m really starting to want a Wii. I figure anything that makes people forget they’re not actually bowling and let the controller go flying at the TV has got to be too fun to resist (yeah yeah, I know about the straps).

I went with the 360 over the Wii this year. Sure the Wii is cute and all, but pretty soon people will realize they are just playing a glorified Gamecube with a fancy controller. Sure looks fun though.

I own one system: The Super Nintendo. That was my baby. I fell in love and never moved on- it is hooked up in all her glory with my shoebox of games beside it. Often, people forsake their 360s and PS2s and drive to my house to play Super Mario Kart in her wonderful 32 bit display…or is it 16 bit?

I got an XBox 360 right around the time they came out (the store in my hometown of 3,500 people actually had two of them, and everyone drove north to the bigger cities to try and buy them at wal-mart and best buy), but since I got it, I have not found any use for it.

I thought I could get back into gaming (I was big into NES, Sega Genesis and PS1), but even though I have like 20 games for XB360, I cannot seem to want to make the time to play it.

I think now that I am out of college, the whole gaming thing has passed me by and I cannot reintroduce myself to the bygone era of hours of fun playing mindless games. I miss those days, but when I actually turn my 360 on, I am bored within 5 minutes.

I’ve never commented before, but I’ve been reading the site ever since I first stumbled upon the fantastic Quest for Chinese Bulbasaur article. After seeing that, I knew I needed to read everything you had to say from then on.

Anyways, I’ve been hoping you would do some posts about the Wii! I’m glad you finally got one! I’ve had one since launch day, it would have damaged my soul too much to wait until Christmas… But you need to add me to your address book! It would be pretty damn cool to have Matt from X-E chilling in my Mii Plaza, and batting cleanup for me in Wii Baseball.

Enjoy the Wii! Don’t get too distracted from Zelda, though, it’s really an amazing game! Another top recommendation, especially for multiplayer, is Super Monkey Ball Bananna Blitz, or even Rayman Raving Rabbits. Both fit your style

Oh, and don’t worry, a Pokemon game for Wii has already been released in Japan, and so the North American release isn’t too far away. Soon we will all be able to virtually pat Bulbasaur on the head, or something.

Man, I really want a Wii!!!! I’ve been looking for one forever, but I’m not obsessive enough to camp out in the electronics department of Target until they get a shipment. I did find a classic controller at Walmart today and bought it, even though I don’t have the Wii yet. Love the article, but it makes me sad that I haven’t found one yet.

Since we’re on the topic, I’ll use this as an excuse to range. I finally got my leader back in XII!!! It’s been way too long since Penelo has been gone.

And I’m 99% certain my party has been decided. Penelo, Vaan, and Ashe. Don’t get me wrong, Baltheir and Basch are great. In fact, I’d have to say Baltheir is my favorite personality. Fran, Fran is just kinda there. Sorry, Kitty. I know you like her.

Posting to echo all the sentiments thus far about the Wii. It’s one of the best consoles ever, and one of the best ideas for games ever. I actually had Zelda a couple weeks before I got a Wii, and even then, it wasn’t even OPENED until a week after I got the Wii. I was having that much fun with the system. Consider yourself added!

I didn’t know you could do so much crap to your Mii! I gotta get on my brother’s Wii when he starts class. Which is like 2 weeks before me.

Nyah. I want the new Super Smash just for a chance to wallop me some Mario with Solid Snake.

i dont know why, but i really want a Wii now. i dont even know what games are out for it, or anything like that, but i want one for the sake of having it.

but either way, i ended up getting a 360 this year just because i like to wait awhile before getting new systems. that, and Viva Pinata is the most addictive game EVER. i mean really, it looks so stupid, but its so damn awesome o_O

To bring the topic of last Blog this way, I was going through some old vacation pics when I went to the Great Escape in Lake George in Upstate NY for the first time about 15 years ago, and guess what was playing at one of the outdoor stages?

The Chuck E. Cheese gang. In puppet form, not creepy animatronics! Chuck E. was in the pic, not to mention the dog and the bird, plus 2 of the 3 singing Magpies (which I always thought from the pic was a 2-headed bird)

It was only for the first year I went there as far as I know, (as Great Escape history in the interwebs is so scarce) as the next time I went, they replaced it with the Jack Hanna wannabe. (who was later replaced by the Looney Tunes show back in ‘05)

Around my house, we’ve been hitting up Wii Sports Bowling pretty hard. I haven’t been bowling in real life for a few years, but the Wii has definitely gotten us wanting to try it out again. Unfortunately, the bowling alley in town sucks and seems to be doing everything in it’s power to avoid us, from league nights only to strange odors that force them to shut down. I need me some bowling!

Well, seeing there’s another Brian on here, I guess I need to change my name to be able to tell us apart. Oh well, I guess one way to tell is that I have the link to my MySpace on my name, but let’s see if BJ works and if so, I’ll run with this. Just to give you an idea, I’m the one who posted in the last blogs about a Tales From the Darkside episode in which an old man loses his nose, and at the end of the episode they show his nose on a napkin. Disgusting.

Anyway, back to the topic. I’m actually really surprised that there are places that sell Wii. Being deployed, I had to rely on my favorite source to send me whatever I want to order and that’s Amazon.com. I don’t know if anyone has had this problem, but the only complaint I have of Amazon is that they never tell you when something is available for Preorder after you requested a reminder. I put my e-mail address to be reminded of when the Nintendo Wii would be ready for Pre-Order and the next thing I know, I find out that within one minute of going on sale, the Wii was sold out! Now we have all these buyers who are selling their Wiis for a good 700 bucks when originally the system only cost about 250 to 350 dollars.

I have to admit though, my reason for buying the Nintendo is quite different than what everyone is saying about the Mii Plaza and everything. Of course now that I know about it, it gives me an even more reason to want to get the system. Anyway, I really wanted the system so I can play my old game favorite from the original NES as well as Gameboy. I’m getting tired of playing NES and SNES games on Emulators where either they don’t work, or the picture is all scrambled, like in Punch Out. Sure I can see my opponents, but I can’t read anything creative they say to me or anything like that! Anyway, I almost caved in and bought a GameCube so long ago because of the feature of using an adapter to play your old GameBoy games, but now that I heard you can play it on the Wii as well as every other old previous system Nintendo had out. That was my original and still is main drive for why I want a Wii, but I can always tempt myself with new games as well!

Anyway, I was talking with my brother today and he said that Wiis were hard to come by and there’s been a fight over them in the Chicago area. Perhaps anyone from the area knows of a place where they have them, they can let me know because I feel I need to send them off on a mission to find one for me, after I write them a check for it of course! I’ll even consider Milwaukee to be within the area of the City of Chicago. Heck, if we can go so far as Kenosha to go shopping the week before Easter (used to be a tradition in my family to go to the big mall in Kenosha on Palm Sunday every year to get stuff for Easter), what’s so bad about going a little further to Milwaukee? It’s just a thought I guess.

Anyway, finally I’m going to get off-topic here. Since it’s New Years, does anyone remember the old Charlie Brown special, “It’s New Years Charlie Brown.” It must be one of those forgotten holiday specials because it’s the ONLY New Years special I can remember, besides “Rudolph’s Shiny New Year” I guess. I’m pretty I won’t be seeing an article from Matt on that one anytime soon! Anyway, I have the episode on VHS and I only seen it once. From what I can tell you, it’s not very memorable except for the fact that for the first and only time, we see the little red-haired girl and she ends up dancing with LINUS of all people. Is it me or does Linus seem to steal every one of poor Charlie Brown’s girlfriends. I mean, I recall another episode where Charlie Brown sees this girl at a football he watches on TV and goes to stalk her down. When they finally find her, guess who ends up with her? LINUS!!!! I don’t remember the title, but I do have it on VHS. I better keep some of these old Peanuts episodes on VHS because they may never see the light when it comes to DVD. I guess they are that bad and forgettable.

Also, one final note I want to put on this. Why does it seem that the Peanuts gang are the only animated series to celebrate other holidays besides the big three? I mean, they have the Easter Beagle special, about three Valentines specials, and even a special on Arbor Day!!!! Funny thing though, they don’t have a St. Patrick’s Day Special. Who here has wanted to see, “It’s St. Patricks Day Charlie Brown” and see Snoopy get drunk while trying to give Lucy the tongue? Of course, that episode may not have worked because it would probably promote underage drinking because, what else is there to do on St. Patricks Day besides drink? It’s just a thought, and with that, I close this blog!!!!

I meant to bring this up weeks ago, but only the day before Christmas, watching Christmas Vacation, did I notice that Frances was Grandma from Grandma’s Boy, let alone whatever her name was on Everyone Loves Raymond, or Everyond Love Naptime. Same difference.

Alas, I was wrong in thinking that an elf(or roomate) paid my cable bill. The stupid cable guy came and turned if off on the 26th. I made my friend come get me at 2am tonight and take me to his house because I couldn’t live knowing I was missing all the nifty post xmas threads.

That being said, I got a bottle of wine for xmas. The End, period. Whatever. I loved CEC’s as a kid. I had no less than 5 b-day’s there, and cried if I didn’t get to hug Chuckie the Rat. I want a Wii so badly I can taste it. Nintendo lost me after Super Nintendo(sad I know), Dreamcast goes down as one of my favorite systems ever, and I’ve been drooling over the PS3. I think I want a Wii instead. I feel guilty. I really must get over my brand loyalty.

I’ve gone crazy with the Miis! I’ve made myself, my girlfriend, my mom and dad, a couple friends from back in Minneapolis, Michael Jackson, Luke Skywalker, and comedian Steven Wright. I find it interesting that none of my Miis seem to care much about baseball, except for Michael Jackson. He’s always at third base, and jumps for every pop fly.

Then again, no one I’ve heard found any EEs on Season 8, even Matt G himself said there would be a few on it!

My Zelda has also been collecting dust ever since I bought the original on the Virtual Console.

I’ve updated again by adding Mandy, Bobo and Dr. Dos along with everyone else above; it’s awesome having a lot of Wii friends because it makes the Mii Parade more like a Mii Army…

Matt (or anyone), have you tried Elebits yet? I’ve played it a bit and it’s fun, but it’s starting to be my dust collector as I’ve finished Zelda…awesome game-once you start you will not be able to stop…and I’ve got a lot of classic games(and Elite Beat Agents on DS) that I’m enjoying. I also agree with Lucky Mesmer: everyone who hasn’t needs to try Rayman. It’s stupidly fun and crazy funny.

I have Elebits and have had a lot of fun with it, but I keep going back to Zelda. I’ve been slowly taking my time exploring my way through it for a month now, and I’m still nowhere near the end, and I’m okay with that. It’s an amazing game.

On the plus side, Twilight Princess is still one of the best Zelda games, if not the best, in its GameCube incarnation. At least I’ve got that to keep me busy…

Happy New Year, everyone! Tonight, it’s just me, the Internet, and the dance party show on my favorite Philadelphia classic rock station. I was hoping a friend would come down and join me, but she ended up not wanting to make the trip in the dark to a place she wasn’t familiar with. My biologcial dad invited me to some party he was going to with his girlfriend, but it was her side of the family and he said he wouldn’t know anyone, much less me. I finally decided I’d be safer on my own. I treated myself to a Monte Cristo at a local diner. (Open faced sandwich of the gods - hot pineapple slices, swiss cheese, ham, and turkey on french toast. You’ve got to love a sandwich that comes with tubs of syrup.)

I don’t have a Wii. I don’t want a Wii. I’m not a gamer. I have an original Nintendo I rarely play.

Well, I’m currently at a Frat bro’s house with about 10 other people and we’re celebrating Happy New Year here.

Sweet! I’m glad I’m not the only one alone, right now my husband is working outside in the rain by the railroad tracks, so it’s just me! 5 minutes till the new year! I’ll be able to hear the fireworks go off at the Falls (Niagara Falls) they are just down the street from me. If I didn’t have the little one sleeping I would walk over and enjoy them, otherwise I’ll have to see if I can see them from my window.

Albums: Just the fact that I finally got a record player this year and could experience many classic albums as they were originally intended was a major 2006 highlight!

Movies: I saw “Dreamgirls” yesterday with an older friend and my god, it was completely sensational. Eddie Murphy hasn’t looked this good since I was about six, and Jennifer Hudson’s big mid-movie solo number brought a standing ovation and probably raised the roof of the Ritz several feet.

Three other major memories for me this year - finally meeting my online best friend face-to-face, finally moving to Oaklyn, New Jersey, five minutes outside of Philadelphia…and less happily, doing major damage on my knee that’s still healing five months after it happened.

Interestingly, IHAQ, I also just saw fireworks, right across from me on Peter Creek in Oaklyn. I had a perfect view on my porch and everything. Really cheered me up. NOW it feels like New Year’s.

It’s only 9:22 here in northern California, and I’m watching the Law and Order: SVU marathon. My daughter’s having a friend spend the night and they’ll be watching all the Harry Potter movies and playing the new Zelda (Gamecube, not Wii…the budget didn’t stretch that far).

My “best ofs” are kind of personal to me since I usually like what I like and say eff you to whatever is “popular”. I’d say best album for me has to be Ta Dah by Scissor Sisters, and I’m not just saying that because it’s the only album I bought this year that actually came out this year. It really is an amazing album and I can’t stop listening to it.

Video games are the same - the only one I’ve bought that actually came out this year was DDR Supernova. I love it though.

On another gamer note, the man of the house just got Guitar Hero II for his PS2 and I have to admit…THAT GAME ROCKS! The music is good, the guitar is way fun to use and I have gained a whole new respect for guitarists because of it. Have any of you tried it out?

I bought a Wii on launch day, waited in line 16 hours too. Now, of course one of the first things I did when I brought it home was to buy as many virtual console games as my wallet would allow. This ended up being a problem for me, as I soon found out I had a defective Wii system. It had trouble reading disks, which was fine, until I got an error message in the middle of a dungeon on TP. Had to start the whole thing over. So I had the option of either sending it in for repairs, waiting two weeks, and hope that the system was fixed when(if?) the system was returned, or just getting it replaced at the Wal-Mart I bought it from, and loose over $50 in VC games. Of course I could never go two weeks without my Wii, so I just replaced it. Ah well.

There was a report that a bunch of demo models for stores accidentally got mixed with the consumer version. That’s probably what happened to Colin.

How would that effect anything? Are the demo models different? it should have worked anyways, regardless.

I’ve gone on what one might refer to as a Mii Chanel binge. That thing is really addictive, I’ve been spending hours at a time creating weird things like anthropomorphic versions of my pets, and… Ant-man? Once you get the hang of it, you can create some really interesting Mii (plural form of Mii?).

I love my Wii. We “camped” out and got it on launch day. I guess I’m back on the Nintendo bandwagon since I fell off and switched to playstation awhile ago.
