12/19/2006: Sun Chips Go Christmas!
The Advent Calendar is now up to date — yes, it would be nice to have it ready at the start of each day rather than the end of each day, but this is what happens when Advent Calendar entries grow to a hundred times their original size. I will now celebrate the completion of this giant sized entry with a bag of Christmas-flavored Sun Chips.

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I spotted these, but my eyes never lying. Sun Chips is celebrating the holidays with limited edition packages of “Cinnamon Crunch” flavored snacks, which come in cinnamony foil bags with big cinnamony bow graphics on ‘em.
Only Sun Chips could successfully pull this off, because…well, could you do cinnamon potato chips? Cinnamon cheese puffs? Nope. Sun Chips can get away with it because nobody really knows what a Sun Chip is to begin with. A company can throw around the term “multigrain” all they want — all we take from that is “moderately healthy,” and it requires a good five minutes of thought to even come up with a reasonable theory on what “multigrain” actually tastes like. Within that, if Sun Chips wants to throw cinnamon all over itself, we’ve got no basis to complain. We can’t say that cinnamon “doesn’t go” with Sun Chips BECAUSE WE DON’T KNOW WHAT SUN CHIPS ARE!
I say this mostly because my heart tells me that it is both wrong and criminal to make cinnamon-flavored chips, and yet, I grab a handful of these and totally spite myself by being pleased. I’m confident that these are about as good as cinnamon-flavored chips could possibly be.

Looking to compare its flavor to some other flavor, the best I can come up with is this: Picture eating a bunch of Cinnamon Toast Crunch mashed together with fifteen tablespoons of salt. Actually, that sounds kinda gross. These really aren’t gross. Weird? Yes. Gross? No. Once you get past your culturally influenced reservations about cinnamon-flavored chips, they’re rather pleasant, definitely festive, and arrive in bags so reflective that you can nearly watch yourself eating in them.

French Onion Sun Chips are my favorite chips, period. Yum!

Sun chips are pretty damn good.
Glasses of ice imprisoning Claire that appear to be all melty in the last picture are less good.

Now I want Sun Chips. Damn you Matt!!!!

CINNAMON IS FOR BUNS, NOT CHIPS FROM THE SUNS!

I hold Sun Chips (especially Harvest Cheddar) near and dear to my heart, so I’m quite suspicious of a cinnamon flavour. Maybe I will ease into the idea by eating a bag of regular Sun Chips, then having a cinnamon bun.
By the way, I saw the Garfield Christmas Special on TV tonight. Yeah, I don’t think you should put the star on the tree before you prop up the tree either.
I had some cinnamon pita chips today, and I thought they were pretty tasty.

Ok so…I have no topic except for the fact that the Advent is still awesome, and that I have yet to buy either the Thanksgiving or Xmas jones Soda sodas.
Speaking of which, Matt said he was gonna review them…;)
My mouth is imagining that these taste (texture completely aside) like the Churros you buy off of the cart before you enter Sam’s Club or BJ’s….also available at various theme parks. I love Sun Chips, I’ll have to give them a shot.

MissJess @ 12/19/2006 3:03 AM EST
I’m totally on the hunt for those now!
I imagine they might be kind of like the cinammon twists at Taco Bell — anybody else ever grow up eating those things?
I’ve had them Sun Chips before–not with cinnamon, the regular variety. I didn’t like ‘em. I’m not a fan of extremely dry chips–I don’t like nachos either; it’s Lays ‘n Ruffles for me.

ugh that sounds super gross! i was wondering if you were just joking on your amazon profile where it says you like licorice, but the jagermeister kinda backs that up now.
“Cuntbitch” is my new favorite word and I intend on using it no less than ten times a day for the rest of my life. That is all.

Oh man, I had to look at that picture for about five minutes before I realized that you didn’t stick a bow on the bag for the photo. Those are very festive chips! And now I must find them.
The Advent calendar is shaping up to be awesome! I’m glad we didn’t have to wait another day for the reveal. Thanks!
In other news, our local Targets are apparently out of 2/3 of the holiday Jones Sodas. My life will be incomplete now. I did get the peppermint, though, and I don’t know whether I like it or not. Sometimes it tastes pretty good, and then sometimes it tasted like medicated throat spray. I don’t know.

Aw! I just got home from Wal-Mart (at 2:30 am CST) and now I hafta go back! Why couldn’t you have posted this before I went (in my Ny-Quil-induced haze) to buy a last-minute gift for my work’s Dirty Santa exchange and caramel ice cream topping for a cake I didn’t feel like making in the first place? lol I really hate Sun Chips, but I’m going to have to give these a try. I love those cinnamon chips at Taco Hell and if these are half as good as those, I’m sold.
For those who might be wondering, I went and bought some “Boundary” spray stuff at PetSmart and sprayed the heck out of my tree to keep the cats off it, since at least one of them was still sleeping up the uppermost branches. I would recommend following the directions carefully or you’ll end up being nearly asphyxiated - the smell isn’t nice at all….but the stuff is working.
We waited two days before putting any ornaments on, and so far, so good - we have a cat-less tree finally. Hooray for spray!

Posted by
Trish @ 12/19/2006 4:55 AM EST
While our cats are pretty much spiteful bastards in every other area, I’m happy to say that they’ve never taken a particular interest in our Christmas trees. Which is good, because our trees usually end up being the kind of trees that can topple over if someone sneezes their way.

Matt @ 12/19/2006 4:57 AM EST
Wow- what an exciting day on the calendar! Awesome.
I don’t know if I would have been brave enough to try those chips if I saw them on the shelves, but now that Matt has tried them for us first, I might be able to handle it.
My cat destroys the presents under the tree rather than the tree itself…which is kind of worse, really. Many a gift has been revealed prematurely at my house.

They look like frazzles, a bacon flavoured crisps/chips we get here in England. It’s funny but I don’t really associated cinnamon as a festive flavour, I guess it might be more of an American thing (or I’ve just been missing out over the past 20 odd years), but I’d still try them just for the hell of it.

Posted by
Terub @ 12/19/2006 9:38 AM EST
My God, two of my most hated things in one festive, bow-decorated bag. Why evil has combined cinnamon and Sun Chips? Those things look like they’ll scrape your colon clean.
I’m really hoping someone turns up the heat in the Kuse house to not only release Claire, but also melt Mr. Snowman.

Bacon flavored crisps cannot make up for the other culinary atrocities committed by the English. Not to mention that when an Englishman says “Bacon,” you should take that to mean “ham”
(Actually, fish and chips is still one of my favourite meals).
And for some reason, these chips remind me of sopapillas (sp?)

Poor Legotron! All that work collecting what amounted to a totem pole, now down the drain.
On the subject of cats and trees, our kitten is entirely uninterested in the tree we put up last night. However, he became a total jerk overnight and upset the bathroom garbage can, knocked Christmas cookies to the floor and probably licked several more, and generally tore the apartment apart. ment. Maybe he figures it’s appropriate. At least the tree is still standing.
Oh man, that was awesome. I still think this year is the best AC we’ve had.
If you don’t agree with me, you an unloved cockslapee.

Too funny, I spent most of the month trying to judge the Boss’s size so I could figure out who he (or she) was. Then I see him and…oh, he’s not really anybody. And then…CLAIRE? Never predicted that. I also love that the curtain and glass shape has been visible the whole month.

We made marshmallow corn flake green wreaths today for cheap neighbor gifts and I noticed the Redhots (that look like holly berries I guess) were the size of friggin’ M&Ms. When did that happen? I guess that’s another sign America really is the most obese country when we have to super size Redhots.
I remember that Redhots were like currency in Elementary school. Or maybe like crack or cigarettes in prison. A cheap reward for good behavior or 10 redhots for whatever was cool at the time. Maybe like borrowing your buddies mechanical yo-yo or something.

RedHots being freakin’ HHUUUUGE has nothing to do with the North American Fatass, and probably being the ideal ammo during kids movies at your local theater. Either used as pea-shooter projectiles, depending on the soda straws used, or whipped one at a time by hand, or chucked by the handful to cover the retreat of forces or antagonizing the olda’ kids smooching in the dark corners. I miss being a li’l kid at the movies.
heh…. Cinna-Mystie.

Sun Chips aren’t bad, even though I haven’t had them in awhile. This is the only chip where I prefer the regular variety vs. the various flavored ones.
Does anyone know why Knacks has an antennae on his head? Is that how he picks up signals to keep his MySpace page running so he doesn’t have to pay for Internet?

OK so I did some research and I am going to have to go with Matt having re-frozen Claire this year based on her location in the “Ice Chamber”. That and I am hard pressed to believe he kept a frozen Claire glass in his freezer for the last 2 years.
Also, I work with several people who love to eat Sun Chips often and am thus exposed to their culinary after breath and it reeks. Few chips can produce assmouth as well as Sun Chips can and do. As a result I am constantly handing out gum and insults on a very regular basis. It is the best of both worlds really. I think I might have to hunt down the elusive Sunnamon Chips (clever play on words huh!) and hope they will produce a less pungent after effect. Matt, is it worth the trip or should I just resign myself to working with the Assmouth twins?

Kingklash: You’re probably right. I prefer to flick skittles at random in the theater. I sacrifice 10 a show. It’s kinda a sociology project of mine. Who will freak out? Only a random skittle will tell.

Some years ago, when I still bought real Christmas trees, I owned a Bedlington Terrier named Teddy. The first night that the tree was in the house, Teddy spent a lot of time just standing and staring at the tree. He sniffed around it a few times, and then apparently deciding that humans were the most hard-to-please species on earth, walked straight into the bathroom, lifted his leg, and peed against the side of the toilet.
I figured his reasoning was that although trees were fair game outside, he knew damn well inside was verboten - but he just had to express his opinion about it somehow.
God, I love animals. They are so very entertaining.

Hey hey, boys ‘n’ berries. Dropping in for my first comment this christmas, woo! It’s been a pretty mediocre one so far, down here in New Zealand, my family’s too full of their own bitter squabbles to do any-fucking-thing at all. There’s a painful gaping BLACK HOLE where the christmas cheer should be. So once again, Matt, I thank you for making the season a little more season..y. Seasonful. Seasonous. Seasoned. Yeah.
Ooh, just where was Mista Snowman during the battle? He disappeared. Then christmas-magically reappeared. Will be be reinserted for the special edition? Does he have a cloaking device? Is this a plot point that will totally be touched upon later? Time will tell. But not yet, bastard that it is.
Seasoned greetings, all!
I like Cinna-Bon cinnamon buns. Those things are so damn good. I remember they tried to make a CEREAL out of mini cinnamon buns, but I haven’t seen it in a while so I guess it died out just like I knew it would.

But the Sun Chips…I haven’t seen them at all, anywhere, the entire holiday season! I didn’t know they existed! I must find them! I love Sun Chips, and I love cinnamon! They look like Cinnamon Toast Chips!
And the Advent Calender gets a touch of the 60s Batman today, with a wild battle, a wonderful rescue, and the icy return of one of the great X-E villians. Will Claire somehow manage to wreck havoc, even from a frozen prison?

starwenn @ 12/19/2006 9:50 PM EST

Miss Jess: I keep telling myself that between the tree still being up and having a bunch of new gifts to enjoy, that the week between X-Mas and NYE counts as “more Christmas seasoning.” It helps beat the blues when I think about how little we have left.
Bill: Thank you for reminding me that I need to watch A Christmas Story like, now. I’ve managed to go the whole season without a single viewing.

I would so see a band called The Assmouth Twins.
Advent is awesome again. I loved the running gag with the bunk beds. And I’m agreeing that the Extreme Closeup Mistah Snowman is freaking hilarious.
And add me to the list of those who wanna pour some cinnamon on Mystie’s Buns.
Invader Norbert: Hey now, that’s my future wife you’re talkin’ about! hahaha
Matt: You better not be opening those Amazon gifts before Christmas! That’s against the rules!
Muppet Baby….technology today is so wonderful, though. My daughter-in-law had her laptop here a few weeks ago and needed to get online to check something for her office. Rather than use my computer, she was able to tap into somebody else’s internet service…not sure what she did, but she was sitting on the family room couch and announced, “Ah hah! Wireless connection detected!” and voila - she was in.
Old E - my 16 year old daughter must have picked up on all the CinnaBon vibes tonight, because when she came home from shopping at the mall, she surprised me with a CinnaBon (with extra icing). Such a good girl.
Matt - Good gawd, man. I’m not nearly ready for Christmas and you say that Christmas Eve is Sunday?? I still have shopping to do! Cleaning to do!!! Wrapping! Cooking! Dang. You’re right, it IS time to watch ‘A Christmas Story’.

I prefer Harvest Cheddar, Garden Salsa, and French Onion Sun Chips. I saw a trashy family opening unpurchased bags of the Cinnamon chips in Target about a week or so before Christmas. They probably threw the bag on the floor or refused to pay for it. When I worked at the video store several years ago, this guy came in, put a video on the counter, picked up a box of Sno-Caps, and proceeded to open it and eat them before I could ring it up! the guy said nastily, “Well, I’m hungry! can’t I eat these now?!” I told him I needed to ring it up. I think he was trying to get out of paying cause he acted like he did have to buy them!!!! Asshole!
