Charlie Brown’s Christmas Tree is for sale!

A Charlie Brown Christmas is and will forever be my favorite of the so-called "Christmas specials." I could list a hundred personally-speaking psychoanalytical reasons why that is, but I wouldn't want them to take away from the real reason: It's just a great cartoon, based on strips from some of Schultz's best years.

Peanuts was at its best when it made us both understand why everyone always shat on Charlie Brown, but hate them for it all the same. Perhaps the shining example of this was Chuck's Christmas tree. After buying a woeful, tiny, sad sack of a tree for his friends' Christmas play in the spirit of genuineness and in spite of commercialization, Charlie Brown catches so much flack from the gang that we were forced to ask, "Why?" We didn't really need Linus to tell us that it wasn't a bad tree. We knew that already. It was cute. It was the sick puppy at the pound that probably wasn't the safest adoption candidate, but obviously the most heartfelt. I can tell I feel strongly about this because I've never used the word "heartfelt" in my entire life until just now. I'm still not totally sure it's even a real word.

When Charlie Brown's friends finally came around, they dolled up his tree to a barely recognizable degree. It looked nice -- great, actually -- but I still preferred the original look, simply because it was easy to replicate just by snapping a few loose branches off the trees in my family's backyard and stealing a red ball ornament from our "real" Christmas tree. While I don't feel that a person has truly lived until they've recreated Charlie Brown's Christmas tree using household and backyard items, a semi-new item from Urban Outfitters gives you the next best thing: Charlie Brown's Christmas tree...artificial style.

Sorry for the grainy pic, but the not-grainy pics weren't as sincere. The kit includes about what you'd expect -- the main "tree" component with flexy branches, a couple of wood planks and a single red glass ball ornament. These paltry ingredients conspire to make your coffee table a remarkable point of conversational interest, but even if you don't have any friends, it's pretty goshshit awesome to have Charlie Brown's Christmas tree in your living room.

I'm ashamed to admit that I didn't spend the extra three minutes necessary to pose the branches exactly how they should be posed; just know that if you buy this kit, you can. Further proof of my rushing-to-write-this is evidenced with the still-visible "MADE IN CHINA" sticker on the bottom plank. Considering why Charlie Brown bought the tree in the first place, there's something terribly ironic about all this.

You can grab this baby for $24 at Urban Outfitters, which is kind of a lot of money considering the simplicity, but not so much when we remember that it's all packaged in a very nice box with a picture of Charlie Brown frowning on it.

Dude. It’s 4pm on a Friday afternoon. If that update goes up before 8 pm I’m grateful. It’s Friday — as in “You’re lucky I showed up for work in something other than flannel pajama bottoms and a hockey jersey” day.

after discovering this blog at 8 this morning i was immediately on the phone with every urban outfitters in the chicagoland area trying to find linus’s blanket ( sold out online and most stores) and the tree. i bought it for my mom for christmas because she’s been collecting charlie brown stuff since before i was born. and to respond to Schwhat’s comment- have you ever heard of camp snoopy? charles schultz obviously didnt worry about selling out when he let a whole theme park( in the biggest mall in the country, no less) use the names and images of all his characters.also proceeds from the blanket go to “project linus”, a non profit organization that makes quilts and blankets for children in hopsital and shelters. charles schultz may be turning in his grave, but at least money is going to a great cause.

sorry if this came off as mean. it’s been a long week and finals are really taking a toll on me!

Christmas has become a congomeration between the pagan celebration and the Christian celebration, so neither side is entirely in the right trying to claim the whole thing for themselves anymore. And the extremists on *both* sides get pretty darned annoying.

I think its kinda sad, the selling of the Charlie Brown Tree…tho I suppose some just don’t have the time to go make their own.

DG – You’re thinking of Bing’s White Christmas album. Its still in print, and you can find it in the many many bins of Christmas CDs that appear this time of year.

All this fighting over the importance of the Charlie Brown tree?!?! What kind of world are we making for Kuse and Mare to bring their child into? Can’t we all hold hands and sing Hark the Herald Angel or some shit?

Bill:

Ok, who else saw King Kong and expected Jack Black to whip out an acoustic guitar and start rocking out with Kyle by his side at any given moment? “No, it wasn’t the airplanes. It was beauty killed the beast. Hit it, Kage!”

I always thought the greatest thing about Christmas was that Christmas is the only holiday capable of being draped in gaudy, capitalist insanity and STILL make you feel all warm and cozy and want to go sit by the fire at grandma’s house.

Can’t we have both sides?

On a completely unrelated (well..not totally unrelated more like…second cousin kind of related) anecdote, they have begun the playing of christmas music at my work (I’m a cook). They have the usual draggy elevator type stuff, but they also play the whole soundtrack to a Charlie Brown Christmas! I’m loving it!

Now..the customers who come by and see my doing my patented Snoopy Dance while preparing their food may not love it so much…

;.; I was just out buying Christmas snackies for myself. I wanted to get Winter Oreos and pair them up with mint Oreos to make red and green Oreos. And I also needed Cadbury Christmas eggs and more Christmas Crunch. I managed to get the Oreos and the Cadburys and then made a pit-stop at the gas station and MY FUCKING CAR DIED CUZ OF THE COLD!! Luckily, it was just the battery. ;.; I want my red and green Oreos. And a new Advent calendar update. ;.; And to make sad little emoticons. ;.;

Oooo. Good stuff to weigh in on here today.

Star Wars: I was disappointed with Phantom Menace, but I did like Attack Of The Clones and loved Revenge Of The Sith. In my opinion, Sith was better than Jedi even. I know it’s sacrilege, but I really hated the Ewoks. Talk about a blantant toy commercial. And I kind of dug the Vader “Nooooooooo!” at the end of Sith. It was kind of cheesy, but I liked that it was like Anakin realized that he’d fucked up and caused the death of Padme and it just ripped his soul apart and really was the final piece that created the Vader we know and love.

Religion vs. Paganism – I was raised going to church, but as soon as I could, I stopped going. But I’m not going to insult anyone’s beliefs. If you want to believe Christmas is all about Jesus, go for it. If you want to believe it’s about worshipping nature or whatever, do it. But, really, isn’t it truly about worshipping the consumer culture and capitalism? I don’t know if Jesus would look too kindly on the whole holiday at this point. But it’s fun.

I’ll go with the Mustafar duel making the prequels. I love Ep. II, but I’m more emo than Knacks, so of course I do. I can’t have anyone challenge me without saying “You will try” :D I’ve been warped.

Check out Life as a House. Hayden at his finest. Well his non-ROTS finest.

That is SO AWESOME!

I want one for my CLASSROOM.

I have to say, that blog post almost made me WEEP!Does the CB special mean alot to me, it was pretty cool and a yuletide favourite, but does it mean a hella lot to me now? You have to believe it.
In other news, I can’t buy that shit because they don’t plan to release it in the UK, I know this because the lass at Urban Outfitters told me so.

I have never felt so silly asking for something in a store, ever.

Well, sue me but I like the tree.

Way, way back (before any of you were born, I’ll wager) I couldn’t afford a tree, so I decorated a 3′ high rubber tree plant. Strung it with popcorn and cranberries and stuck anything on it that was small enough to look like an ornament – one thing actually was one of those wind-up walking Woodstock toys…wish I still had him.

The point is….it doesn’t really matter where you get the tree or what you use, does it? And at this point, I’d rather have the UO tree than my gorgeous$300 pre-lit fake one….and that I still can’t decorate because I can’t keep the eff’ing cats out of it.

Bah.

That is one of the coolest things ever! I am definitely getting one!!!

As a kid, I wasn’t really allowed to watch Christmas specials. My parents were very strict about that. I was nine years old before I ever saw A Charlie Brown Christmas, and even then it was because of my uncle. He wasn’t Jewish, and one year he let me pick out his tree. I went to the lot and picked a small, bare little tree and he laughed about the Charlie Brown tree. When it became obvious that I had no clue what he meant, he made me watch the show. And the show was good.

Chestnuts roasted by Jemmy @ 12/08/2006 10:04 PM

My tree already looks like a six-foot version of that, with spaces between branches wide enough to hang ornaments the size of Canada, but like Charlie Brown, I love it anyway. ;)

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 12/08/2006 10:31 PM

I can’t believe it took THIS long for one of those to come out. I can’t help but love it but I think the price is all wrong.
I watched the RUDOLPH and FROSTY extravaganza tonight on CBS. Is it just me or did they really miss the mark by showing both of 3 of these specials back to back to back?? I mean, I doubt many kids are watching FROSTY RETURNS right now.

Also, I noticed that the commercials weren’t as Christmassy or kid-centered. Another missed opportunity.
On a more positive note, I see that SANTA CLAUSE IS COMING TO TOWN is back on network T.V. this year. I know ABC FAMILY has done more than there share but does anyone know the last time it was on one of the networks?? Early 80′s I’d say.

Jemmy,

That makes me feel sad for you. I’m glad you got to see it. You’re right, the show was good and all was perfect with the world.:)

Yeah, my cat would eat that CB tree for breakfast. Followed by any plastic bags containing tree accessories.

Speaking of cats, on “Stuffonmycat.com” some dude proposed to his girlfriend on the site. And she said yes.

Has anyone proposed here on XE? Or would that just be weird?

I think Kuse to Mare, but even that was offscreen.

I missed Rudolph & Frosty, cause of work!

Woo, it’s Mista Snowman!

Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 12/09/2006 12:07 AM

That tree looks more like a seasonal decoration that pays tribute to the special if anything else. It looks like something clever.

And Mista Snowman rocks, thank you. ;)
