Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash!

The other night, I saw a commercial starring Michael Ian Black and a singing hawk, introducing me to "Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash," a special variation on the original formula (which I don't believe I've ever drank) that's only available from now until the end of the Christmas season. The commercial played it like this was already a holiday tradition, but 2006 is indeed the drink's debut year. With Pepsi Holiday Spice presumably gone forever, this may be as close to a Christmas cola as we'll get this year, discounting everything Jones Soda sends our way.

Though intended to be a "holiday edition" of Sierra Mist, there was a concerted effort to not alienate anyone who hates Christmas, the holidays or even just random snowflake graphics. I can take the green label and the red color of the beverage as just enough to give it a passing grade, and after all, cranberries belong to the colder holidays. More importantly, as someone who can be given a Ziploc bag full of raw limes and cranberries and call it dinner, I had high hopes that "Cranberry Splash" would put me on the Sierra Mist bandwagon for now and forever.

It's good stuff -- kind of like carbonated Cherry Kool-Aid. Its hue makes glasses full of Cranberry Splash a-okay on the holiday table; plus, it's always fun to drink things that are supposed to taste like two different things entirely. On every sip, your head will try to separate the flavors of lemon-lime and cranberry, never quite succeeding but always believing that you "almost had it." Factor in the "limited time" aspect of the drink, and we've got a winner. Personally, I'll drink fizzified dog shit if a soda company tells me it won't be around in two months. It's always nice when a comer-and-goer actually tastes good.

While hunting for lime Mist, we also stumbled upon several bottles of Febreze air spray in holiday scents. Regular Febreze is a lifesaver in this house, as I'm sure it is in many homes filled with cats or smoke or both. These "Air Effects" editions don't pack the same "clean punch" as normal Febby, but they do smell like Christmas, so hooray.

There were three -- "Apple Spice & Delight," "Vanilla & Baking" and "Fresh Evergreen & Snow." And that's pretty much the order of desirability, too. "Apple Spice" is a nice apple cinnamon blend, of the same smelly genre as all of those red candles people can't stop buying until 12/26. The vanilla one is supposed to make your house smell like you just baked cookies, but it's just plain old vanilla. Not bad, but not entirely Christmassy. "Fresh Evergreen & Snow" just smells like regular room spray, and not a particularly good regular room spray. With correspondingly colored can tops, I couldn't resist buying all three. And now I will go huff them until the walls melt.

This here post is also an SNT.

Fresh Evergreen & Snow?
Wouldn’t that be cold, wet trees?
Add a comma, and it’s a law firm for Santa.

OMG! When we were in FLorida, my husband went to one of them mall survey places and taste tested about 2 12 packs of the cranberry mist stuff. We had to take it home and taste to see which cans we like better. One was almost like a rasberry lemonade flavor and the other was the more tart cranberry one…he had to fill out surveys and non disclosure agreements and stuff. He was supposed to get ten bucks for his trouble, but they gypped him. Oh well…its just funny that you show that soda on here now.

This all  happened in Fenruary of ’06 btw….so its been in development a good while.

Mandy, what did the test cans actually look like? Bet they’d sell on eBay. ;)

I want an air-freshener that smells like bubble gum

THey were plain silver looking, and it had a white stripe meaning group A and one that was plain that was group B. And it said not for resale, for test marketing purposes

I have a job interview in Manhattan Monday morning. I’m so nervous! I’ve been living at home since I graduated in August and I really want to move out and join the work force.

Good luck, Jeff. If you get it, we can buy lunch from the same delis, nod awkwardly and return to our respective offices.

Holy shit! Just got back from Atlanta and Cheech Marin was on the plane. I had to say something to him so like an ass I told him Up in Smoke was my favorite movie and I got through college watching it. He thanked me an asked if I watched Nash Bridges at all. I wantd to seem like a normal fan so I replied with a confident, “nope.” Didn’t mean to come across that way. Oh well.

Good on ya Matt, I was wanting to try that pop, but didn’t know if it would be worth it. I’ll try to snag one now. Still on the hunt for a new tree…LMK folks if you get a cool one.

I don’t like Sierra Mist, and I don’t like cranberry juice… but I find myself oddly curious how well Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash mixes with vodka.

A conundrum.

A really cheap way to freshen the air is to boil lemon slices. It takes care of anything, and in the winter it smells like lemon tea. Just a bit o’ triva for ya there.

Aww, look at the little turkey legs. Gives me the warm fuzzies.

Chestnuts roasted by Jessica Marie @ 11/11/2006 5:34 PM

I wonder if those are the legs of the Shyguys we’ve been basting for the last couple days…

I know, I know, Matt’s been slaving for hours over a hot paint program and this is the thanks he gets!?

Sorry. I need sleep…

Febreeze is a life saver at my house! It’s mostly used when family comes over, especially my grandma, who smokes like a chimney. Is it sad that whenever she leaves, I can describe my house “smells like Thanksgiving”??

On another note, tonight is my frat’s famed “Hell Night” where we’ll finally initiate some new blood. Sadly, there is only 1 pledge left this semster, but we’re happy to have him. :D

I haven’t posted here in quite a while, so I’m soory that my big comeback is nothing more than a mean, annoying correction. However, I’ve seen this problem here a few times and it drives me nuts, so I can’t stop myself from speaking up. “Cola” is not a term for all carbonated beverages; rather, it is a specific sort of pop. It is the taste of Coke-a-Cola ond Pepsi Cola. Sprite and Sierra Mist, for example are not cola, but lemon-lime drinks. Sorry again.

Chestnuts roasted by Tougi @ 11/11/2006 6:08 PM

I’m also soory that I misspelled Coca-Cola.

Chestnuts roasted by Tougi @ 11/11/2006 6:09 PM

Sorry to double post, and to nitpick, but the icons that we’ve been basting before the turkey legs were Snifits, not Shyguys. Snifits had the large mouths in their masks to shoot bullets and had more expressive & darker eyeholes than the Shyguy cousins.

Shyguys will always be my favorite Mario underlings because there are so many different variations of them, as opposed to Goombas, where there’s only regular, winged, and variations of the 2 in terms of size, color, etc. Shyguys, however, come in several different forms, and just their mask, outfit, size, and accessories change what they do! Give em a spear and they’re Spear Guys; give them wings and they’re Shy Aways or Beezos, make em fat to become Gourmet Guys, or even set them on fire! Dead ones become Greapers, and the pogo stick versions, the Shysters! Yoshi’s Island, SMRPG and the 2 Paper Mario games have given us a whole treasure trove of these guys. Not to mention that Yoshi Story, the Black & White ones gave you new Yoshis!

My favorite ones? The really fat ones from SMW2, the Shy Guy ghosts from the same game, the Pyro Guys from Paper Mario, the famous Shy Ranger from SMRPG, and most of all, from SMB2: The ones that rode the cannons & the ostriches. Those guys rocked.

Tougi, I’ve been called out on that one before, but it’s a willful mistake I will keep making and hope that I get a pass because it’s willful.

Matt –

Thanks. If awkard lunchtime nods means I’m employed, I’ll happily do so!

Chestnuts roasted by Jeff Mack @ 11/11/2006 6:21 PM

I remember being part of the test market for the original Sierra Mist, like 10 cents a can or something. What a great story.

Hi! Long time reader, first time poster. I love X-E.

We’re hooked on Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash at my house. I was at the store the other day, and I grabbed a bottle of the stuff plus a couple cases of cans.

I had no idea that it was a limited time drink, though. I’m going to be having withdrawl symptoms after Christmas. :(

Chestnuts roasted by Jason L @ 11/11/2006 7:48 PM

Hey, has anyone seen Holiday Spice Pepsi this year? I know they didn’t make it last year, but I’m hoping against hope that they make it this year.

Sigh.

Chestnuts roasted by Yet Another Matt @ 11/11/2006 8:12 PM

Bah I’m disappointed that the spray doesn’t smell like cookies. If it did I would buy every bottle in the world, go high up into the mountains, and smell cookie mist every day until I die. But I doubt that’ll be the only Xmas soft drink we see this season. Everyone seems pretty pumepd about the holidays this year. Time to go figure out this fancy new espresso machine. It came with a DVD O.o

I don’t know if I am excited or not but the original How the Grinch Stole Christmas is on TBS at 7:30 eastern. It seems a bit early to me.

Bought the Holiday Seirra Mist and it is good with Vox. But I am spooked that it is too close to a Cosmopoliton. I think I will drink this in the safety of my own house.

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 11/11/2006 8:19 PM

Matt, you’ve never had sierra mist before? Madness, madness I say! Actually that’s pretty much all I have to say, well that and I’m totally pschyched about another Christmas season on X-e. Wooo, bring on the Knacks and Kuse!
