My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

Christmas candy, pa rumpapum pum.

My God, the traffic...THE TRAFFIC...THE TRAFFIC. As I've written about before, my daily commute to and from work ranks as one of the worst commutes in the world (seriously, there have been studies), and today was especially fun. The bus got fifteen feet onto a bridge and proceeded to stay absolutely still for the next 65 minutes. All of my commutes suck, but this morning's was a rare beast -- a two hour and forty-five minute ride into work. The real gem was that I was sitting on the bus innocently jotting down a laundry list of things that absolutely had to get done by 10 AM, and I suddenly noticed that it was much easier than it should've been to write things in my notebook on what was normally a very bumpy bus ride. Turns out we just weren't moving. For 65 minutes. We did not move a inch for 65 minutes.

It's funny what commutes like that can do to a person. I spent the day feeling like God and the world at large owed me a favor, and all grievances I had with any other living creature were magnified by thousands, because I knew, in my heart of hearts, that everyone around me woke up, got dressed, had breakfast and got to the office in thirty minutes flat. Like, this one guy wanted me to sign something that I was apparently supposed to sign a week ago despite never hearing about it and despite the fact that I still have no idea what I signed, and grinding my teeth into bits was all I could do to avoid nonsequiturring his ass with a "YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT PAIN IS." The ride home was just as shitty, and I'm proud to be one of the few hundred people on the planet who spent six hours commuting to and from work today. When I finally got home, I needed to take the edge off, and when beer won't do, it's time for Christmas candy.

One good thing about being so busy is that I haven't been able to overindulge in hot holiday action too early, meaning that I'll still be into this junk come December. (Which is doubly awesome since I have more days off in December than days "on." Got a feeling Mare will be more wordy than usual this year.) That's not to say that I haven't gotten enough whiffs of Santa to know that even bad days can't mask the best time of year. It's pretty much Christmas 100% on the retail scene, with every store of every type dolled up with lights and garland, which a great way to advertise the fact that they sell lights and garland.

I got a small taste of the glories tonight -- four new (well, new for me) Christmas candies, each based on some existing, popular candy that spends the rest of the year totally not Christmassized. My pickups included a Nerds Christmas ornament filled with you-know-what, a Russell Stover Coconut Wreath, a Santa-shaped Hubba Bubba "Twist 'n Pour" thingy, and a Santa-shaped bag of Jolly Rancher "Double Blasts." Lots of Santa-shaped things, ya see. I rarely buy holiday candy for eating purposes -- they're more akin to mantelpieces -- but all of these made the grade and are a-okay for biting.

I'm kind of disappointed that the Nerds ornament didn't include Christmas-colored Nerds candy inside, but that's a minor gripe when you consider how awesome it is to have a tree ornament that makes maraca sounds when you shake it. The Hubba Bubba thing is filled with more appropriately colored pieces of gum, which pour out of a gaping hole in Santa's mouth and just generally delight me. The Coconut "Wreath" is more like a Coconut "Frisbee" or Coconut "Sausage Patty" or Coconut "Skeet," but Holy Mary is that thing GOOD. I didn't have high hopes for the Jolly Rancher "Double Blasts," but it was another nice surprise. Picture a Jolly Rancher with pinholes on each side. Now picture that same Jolly Rancher with copious amounts of pixystick dust hidden inside. I don't know if that sounds attractive on paper, but it works.

That's about all for tonight, I guess. I'm halfway done with a "real" article that has nothing to do with the holidays, which is nice, and then we'll get to some articles that do have to do with the holidays, which could also be nice. We'll see. Maybe one will be nice and one won't. Ding dong yum.

That Santa Claus filled with candy tickled my funny bone to no end.

I’m a pilot for Comair and I love sitting in hotels every other night reliving my childhood. Thanks for the opportunity. If it wasn’t for you I might have to actually read books. ..or watch Dog the Bountyhunter

I agree with Bill. This has been an unusually horrid week what with working three jobs (until the new girl is finished training and can take over my morning job) and trying to find time for sleep and homework, this was the best-spent ten minutes of the entire effing week. Thank you, Matt. You’re much appreciated.

Chocolate? Coconut? WREATH? Yes!

Uh…My commute is about 30 seconds, if I catch the light right. :)

Seriously, Matt, sorry your commute sucked this morning. You need to get yourself a DS for these moments….

Those Jolly Rancher Double Blast things are really good.
Oh, and there are now cookie dough Pop Tarts that are very good.

A cute little candy shop just opened up right across from where I work in a mall, and boy-o-boy, they’ve got some obscure candy I hadn’t seen in a while. I’ve finally got a hook up if I have a craving for candy ciggs or wax bottles!

Ugh, I hate those Coconut Wreath/Nests (yes, the Easter version is exactly the same, except the regular chocolate is shaped like eggs).

On an unrelated note, I went to a Hooters for the first time in my life. Frat pledge event and first time I ever ate there. Discuss.

Ah… Good ol’ Hooters. It’s nice to see girls still wearing hose. Really thick hose, but hose all together.

I have a great Hooters story. First time I ever ate there was in Indianopolis during the BU women’s Championship game. It was the ONLY thing open after the game.

Our waitress was pregnant. VERY Pregnant. Now, I have no problem with that, and I’m glad they continued to let her work there.

But she wore the same outfit. Spandex. Tight Spandex.

In case you’re wondering, Tight Spandex does not look all that hot on a pregnant women.

But hey, the fish and chips were good….

I have nice hooters

I think we can all agree these new Xmas candies are a real HOOT ;)

Man, I haven’t posted in a while. But I love Christmas candy so much. I always enjoy reading about all the different kinds that I never see around my area.

On another note, I spent all day hunting down the 2006 Jones holiday soda pack, and I found one. And my God, they taste awesomely terrible. I enjoyed every minute of drinking them, as bad as they taste. Though, I have to admit that the Antacid one, which tastes almost exactly like Tums, is pretty tolerable.

Thank you Matt for posting tonight. You totally helped me take my mind off the fact that I’m working on a grad school term paper from Hell at 2AM (central time). I mean seriously describing the fabrication process of an SET or read an article on Christmas candy while listening to Christmas music on the radio? It’s a no brainer. Well I hope tomorrow’s commute is better. Commuting is kinda why I chose to take internet courses. Just an aside, have you ever considered getting an handheld system like a PSP or a DS for commutes? I know they’re only 30 minutes normally but when stuff like this happens you can take it out on some Goombas. Just a thought.

Yay coconut wreaths!! They more than make up for the lack of Buzzard Nests this year.

Mmm, I once had a dream where i went to new York. It was an X-E convention (future generations on Planet XE will wonder why so many people missed the Site That Changed History and made candy more important than elections – mm, that sentence calls for some creative journalistic editing…) Enough mmm’s, time for smarties!!

Anyway, I wound up at the original Woodstock cum X-E Convention being held in Central Park, the traffic was murder, so Matt came in on a skateboard, but he was Bart Simpson *at the same time*. My subconscious thinks you’re cool, Matt!

So what I’m trying to say is, why not skateboard to work? You’ll get there quicker! Although I’m a great fan of hoofed ungulates – camels are fast, why not catch a camel? They’re self-replicating, they don’t rust, the upholstery never wears out, they last 20 years, use cheap biofuel and never use lanes! The tendency to spit and the old-camel-smells are the only drawbacks.

Okay, yes, i have had too much coffee today. It’s 13:25 over here and I’m jangly as a coot [I dunno what that is].

Jolly Rancher Santa is pretty damn happy that candy is coming out of his mind, packaged no less. I think I’ll get the Hubba Bubba Santa cause that container rules all.

I’ll also get my old “Chriddmuss Tahm” staple: one foot candy cane that’ll take me until February to finish.

Yesterday I commuted INTO the city during rush hour to help my girlfriend babysit. A normal drive of thirty minutes turned into 2 and a half hours of hell. I contemplated driving into the Hudson no less then 40 times. Thank god they werent doing any type of road work downtown making all the roads in Soho unparkable. Oh wait, nevermind, THEY WERE DOING ROAD WORK! FUN!

I love the gum-santa. It looks reusable too, which would be great for putting junk in later. At least that’s what my son would do.
I feel for you and your commute, Matt. I would never be able to last at a job where the commute sucked away alot of my day.
I just looked at the garage sale section of my local paper, and there’s a sale featuring 35 years of Christmas collectables–I am so psyched!

How jolly it all is.

I laughed at how you described being stuck in a traffic jam…that’s exactly how I feel.

Glad it’s not just me. I have been 30 minutes or more late to work every day this week except today. I live in the sticks an hour from work, so I have half a commute on country two-lanes and half rush hour city traffic. Yesterday I spent 20 minutes at a train crossing before turning around and driveing 15 miles out of the way to a viaduct to get over it. The day before there was dense fog and a head-on collision that had the highway shut down. Monday and Tuesday it was raining which brings the City traffic to a standstill. To top it off, they closed our parking lot to start a new building this week and the Garage has been full every morning so I have to park in another lot that is about 3/4 miles from my desk. Of course everyone I work with has a completely different route so they are never late on the days that I am. My in-laws were surprised to see me at 7:50 rather than 8:30 to drop off the tot today, but I was going to park in that Garage today if it hair-lipped everyone in the company.

I know absolutely nothing about New York, but can’t you take trains from all the boroughs?

I still think it should be “Roasted by” for Thanksgiving.
