10/31/2006: Happy Halloween From The Darkside!

Happy Halloween! This year’s Halloween Countdown ends, oddly, with a review of my favorite episode of Tales From The Darkside. Such a great show, and it gave me just the kind of last-minute spirit zapping I needed. I know most people did their big costume/haunting things this past weekend, but tomorrow is Halloween Propa. Do your best to enjoy it, however you can.

I really didn’t want the season to slip by without getting to write about these, because they’re great. Let me sum it up quick: Cars, in horror shells, fun times. Don’t think that’ll due, so, expansion: Remember those Matchbox Christmas Coal Cars I wrote about ten years ago? Same idea here. Regardless of whether your costume-wearing widdle-wons have been naughty or nice, they, and I and you will all revel in the glories of horror-shelled mystery Matchbox cars. Each plastic case splits open to reveal a toy car that is sadly not at all Halloweeny, but it’s the cases that count, and these are great cases. Not sure which I like better, but it doesn’t matter much; they’re both mine.

They’re coming to take me away, ha ha.

We had an interesting night of trick or treaters this year.

I was worried we wouldn’t get as many as last year, because it had been rainy all day, but the rain let up, and we actually got ten more.

My SO wanted to give out something really cool (last year we gave out glowsticks in addition to candy, they were extremely popular), so he got these glow wands, approximately the size of a glowstick, powered by LEDs, that do different blinky colors and things. Since we’re finally in our own home, we’re really excited about this whole thing. Last year (our first year in the house) it seemed like everyone else in our neighborhood just gave out normal candy. This year I noticed some of the kids had those giant plastic pixy-sticks, so I think we’re causing the neighborhood to try to kick it up a notch.

Toward the end of the time allotted for beggar’s night, we had a few groups of kids approaching the house chattering to each other “Is this the glowstick house? I hope it is… I think it is… IT IS!!! IT’S THE GLOWSTICK HOUSE!!!!” because they had seen the other kids walking around the neighborhood with our rocking wands. That was pretty fun.

We did seem to get more older kids this year. The oddest was a group of three young teenage girls who caused me nearly to blurt out “what are you supposed to be, whores?” Upon discussing it with my SO after they left, we agreed there was really no other explanation of their “costumes” that worked. They were wearing heels, fishnets, daisy dukes or mini skirts, embroidered bustiers, and copious makeup. I can’t imagine that there were up to six parents involved in the decision to let their underage girls roam the neighborhood visiting random people’s home begging for candy dressed like that.

To get everyone in the Thanksgiving mood, I found Macy’s press release on the new additions to this year’s parade:

Old E, I love Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things. Sure the effects suck, the production values were less than a money in a petty cash drawer and the acting was marginal at best. However,Orville the dead guy is just creepy as hell. The zombie attack gets you because it’s almost like watching a snuff film or a documentary since the production is so cheap.

We spent Halloween on a main street last night in a historic town near us. It was nice, really has that old-timey Halloween feeling without all the glitz. The only problem was attendance was down due to it being on a weeknight and money of the costumes were simply mask, jeans and t-shirt. A lot of people showed a lack of effort. We went to Wal-mart on the way home and it was damn melancholy to see all of their Halloween stuff pushed up to the front in clearance stacks and racks while Christmas music was playing overhead. They couldn’t even wait until Halloween was over. Sigh.

Sorry I didn’t get to give a proper send-off yester-wise, but a couple of last-minute things popped up. Had a lotta fun last night, even if it did get colder than crap once the sun went down. Pizza Freddy went over great, and I ended up with quite a bit of candy I can’t eat, because of Diabetes. Ok, I might make an exception for Jawbreakers and M&Ms, but don’t tell anyone. Sounds like a ‘We’eny time was had by all, and to all a good sugar buzz. I am now 37 years old, and everybody else is older too! All thanks to Matt for another grrrrreat coundown, and moreso to his woman for being more understanding than most sane adults about his hobbies. Take a break, eat some treats, and recharge for Christmas.

Oh, and Happy Birthday to Me!

My parents’ house had something like 165 kids last night. Anyway, I know I’m in the minority here, but I vote for holding off on the Christmas talk. Don’t get me wrong, I’m as eager as anyone else for it to be Christmastime, but I don’t believe in starting the Christmas fun until Thanksgiving. Call me crazy if you like. Just please go easy with the rotten fruit.

Matt, that was a damn fine way to end the Halloween season.

It’s okay to switch gears now:

Merry Christmas

Thanks for the help Squee and Jedoc but I suck at this. I saw where you can convert them to html but I couldn’t figure out how to share the whole album.
Since Halloween is over anyway, I just picked the best picture of the classroom. Click my name and ENJOY (because this was much more work than I expected) :( .

How about some *proper* holiday talk.

Happy Day of the Dead!
Happy Reformation Day!
Happy Birthday, kinglash!

Kick ass! Thought I was the only one who remembered that episode. I saw it at the tender age of 9 when it first aired and it disturbed the shit out of me. I loved that show as a kid but it gave me a lot of sleepless nights. You’re so right about that opening sequence – all those beautiful, tree-lined landscapes just got all dark and twisted. My family had just moved to a new house in a new state when I discovered Tales from the Dark Side. It was my first night in our new place and somehow that sense of dislocation seemed to make it all the more creepy. Good stuff, man. Great way to wrap up Halloween ‘06 and I’m already looking forward to next year.

Happy Birthday KINGKLASH!! Hope it’s a good year for you.

I spent Halloween at a birthday party- my friend turned 24. We BBQ’ed ribs on the patio, played Texas Hold Em and watched the hockey game. Good times.

I am also anxious for Xmas, but I want to wait a little longer before jumping into the season completely. My b-day is Nov. 10th, so I usually wait until after that…and put up the tree before November is over!

Yeah, today felt kinda nice. Afterglow, if you will. Played Halloweentown in Chain of Memories. Good times.

I’m pretty sure I’m ready for holiday half-time (i.e., Thanksgiving), though. Looking forward to our Jones party. To Black Friday. Standing outside of Best Buy, freezing my butt off with 500 other people at 5 am. God, I love Black Friday. Conditioned-Capitalistic Pleasure: How I adore thee, let me count the ways.

I mean, it’s supposedly to buy stuff for other people, but I’m going to make a shocking confession: It’s for me.

“tell me I’m a bad bad bad bad maaan!!!!” :D

omfg I knew before i clicked that that was gonna be your favorite. Why? Because it’s the only episode I remember. And in fact an episode that I saw I believe on Halloween the year it aired. We continue to be seperated at birth.

Hey: I’ve been reading you for about seven years and never wrote in. Your new Great Pumpkin was Incredibly Great… I really liked the approach you took by telling us about what the whole concept meant to you… and by explaining ‘5′ which I didn’t notice til this year’s viewing (from Netflix: in the Army and all. No TV) Good show, Matt! You keep it up for those of us who are not in our Youthful America during this glorious season! You’re better than Christmas, any day…
