10/05/2006: MORE New Halloween Candy!

Six new sweets join the parade of 2006's Best Halloween Candy, including Spooky Nerds Ropes and Life Savers Gummies shaped like bats.

Dude tomorrow I am totally sending the interns at work to bring me 15 medium soft drinks from McDonald's.  I can't stop thinking about the Monopoly pieces.  I need them all.  I need Boardwalk.

Pfft! What are the odds that someone in a large city will get Boardwalk? Some old lady in Bugtussle will win, but she won't know it because she'd just throw the cup out.

Posted by Kindersczenen @ 10/05/2006 11:47 PM EDT

I totally dig your column, man! I'm surprised I haven't seen BODY PARTS gummy candies on your site yet I'm sure they're on their way. Like GUMMY FANGS of last year they are both gross and actually taste good

Posted by John @ 10/05/2006 11:49 PM EDT

Those pop rocks look disgusting. They have to make your mouth a mess too.

My whole problem with halloween themed candy is that it looks nasty. Especially things made to look like pumpkins. Ewwwww.

But mmmm at halloweenie marshmallows. Even the pumpkin ones, because they look really excitable.

Posted by Denise @ 10/05/2006 11:51 PM EDT

Matt,

Woot 3rd post. Matt, bring in the 80s Halloween adds! And also have you thought about making a forum? And I could have sworn I saw you at TGIF fridays on Monday. And you never go on your AIM screen name that you posted on the FAQ! How's that Halloween contest comin'.

Sorry just wanted to use this spot to my advantage.

Posted by Cotter @ 10/05/2006 11:51 PM EDT

I absolutely hate TGIF for a burger-related incident several months back, so you wouldn't have caught me there. :)

Posted by Matt @ 10/05/2006 11:52 PM EDT

"DON'T BE ALARMED, I'm a cartoony Wolfman who WILL NOT HURT YOU!"

Matt, I don't think you fully understand your genuius!

Posted by IHAQ @ 10/05/2006 11:53 PM EDT

Matt,

Well it was in California anyway so I know it wasn't you. That's funny you said that, because the same thing happened to me but a Mac and Cheese incident. Care to go into further context? :D

One more thing where can I get some Teen Wolf cartoon series tapes or DVD's or mpegs or whatever, I've been searching for them for awhile now.

By the way, tried the Pitch Black slurpee. Just didn't do it for me. :(

Posted by Cotter @ 10/05/2006 11:55 PM EDT

I just discovered something on my digital cable system.  Under the "free pass"  section is AMC Monsterfest, where you can watch a whole lot of free horror movies like Evil Dead, Day of the Dead, Sleepaway Camp, etc.  Looks like I'm going to be busy. :)

Posted by JLAJRC @ 10/05/2006 11:58 PM EDT

Really!? Do you have Cox Digital Cable!? Tell me more!

Posted by Cotter @ 10/06/2006 12:00 AM EDT

Man, fuck Boardwalk.  You gotta get the FOUR RAILROADS.  They're worth $5 MILLION.

Posted by Brandon @ 10/06/2006 12:03 AM EDT

I can't believe I read this every day!

Posted by Anonymous @ 10/06/2006 12:11 AM EDT

Did those Jack O'Lantern lollipops have that awesome  corrugated texture on the back like the Easter ones do? I love running that up and down my tongue. I'm a sad individual.

Posted by Kid Nicky @ 10/06/2006 12:21 AM EDT

I had a Pitch Black today!  It was awesome.

If you go on Cox.net they have full-length horror movies and short films.  Some of them are okay.  I don't have digital, so I'll just be watching the regular Monsterfest, but that's still okay with me!!

Posted by broomstickjockey @ 10/06/2006 12:29 AM EDT

I saw those Pop Rocks at the store and wondered if they'd show up here. :D

Posted by Anonymous @ 10/06/2006 12:30 AM EDT

And I can't believe I've read this everyday for the last 3 years!  :)

I saw an add for somekind of "Scream Awards" on Spike sometime next week…I'm not really a horror guy, but it looked right up your alley, Matt…

I'm as big a sucker for ghosts as the next guy, or gal; but, I don't think there's any way I'd be able to stomach more than one of those marshmallow ghosts.  On the other hand, I'd try anything flavored "Wacky Watermelon" at least once.  "Freaky Fruit Punch" is kind of fun, too — reminds me something some creepy guys undoubdtedly concocted at a frat party last autumn.

Posted by Review the World @ 10/06/2006 1:14 AM EDT

Yum.

Speaking of which, in the last blog I mentioned finally buying all 7 Halloween Jones Sodas. Of the new stuff, I've had Monster Mojito (reviewed last blog), and Creey Cranberry, which is also pretty damn good.

And like I said, they've only make 1 boardwalk a year, and good chance it's on one of those big cokes that sticks to the cup if you dont remove it 20 seconds after receiving it and you're forced to throw it out.

I'm finally gonna get some McDs tomorrow (cause it's Friday…that's McDsDay), and I'm thinking about suggesting to my CVS crew to pool our pieces together to see what we get (cause we usually go on McDs runs, mostly on friday)

Also, I posted a new myspace blog, detailing the evils of Starbucks expansion.

Posted by Invader Norbert @ 10/06/2006 1:23 AM EDT

With my luck, this will be the year when I find Boardwalk, and I'm disqualified from the contest because my brother works at the McDonald's down the street from our house.

Posted by Thomas @ 10/06/2006 1:29 AM EDT

sweet, pun intended! i tried out those twistables and you were totally right they taste like pull-n-peel twizzlers used to. i rememberwhen pull-n-peel first launched they were so cheap they were practically free. me, my older brother, and his friend got our babysitter to buy us wayyy too much and then we watched ren and stimpy and spun around eating twizzlers until we got violently ill. never could eat them after that, so these twistables have a nice/gross nostalgia value to em.

Posted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 10/06/2006 1:31 AM EDT

Dude, I got the double Baltic! And then my fries had already been pulled! Uncool.

Posted by squee4242 @ 10/06/2006 1:41 AM EDT

It's really really hard to eat while trying to read the Halloween Candy articles. Here I was, enjoying a plate of grease-laden microwave mozzerrella sticks, and all of a sudden my brain had a brief spasm, assumed I was eating Marshmallow Pumpkins and/or Ghosts and couldn't figure out why it tasted like deep fried cheese.

Dude tomorrow I am totally sending the interns at work to bring me 15 medium soft drinks from McDonald's.

Must feel good to order someone around. I wonder if I'll ever know what it's like to be on the directing end instead of the slavery end…

Be nice to the interns. Most of us would kill to get "experience in Nickelodeon" on our resumes.

Posted by Mars @ 10/06/2006 3:37 AM EDT

I would kill for any experience *in Times Square*! Matt, I'd really kill for your job. Or one that doesn't require too much creativity - I prefer sales and economics to graphics and ad design, but hey? Fetching 3000 boardwalk-possible sodas for the Mattster might fit into "experience". Of course, I have a bad habit of murdering evilbosses, so maybe I'd beware if I were you. This one guy I bound, printed and laminated in his own office! I mailed him with extreme impoliteness even! [okay, in an alternate universe with a purple San Francisco bridge, but anyway…]

Can we get vampire smileys? With fangy smiles? I love vampires, but only the kooky Bela Lugosi sort, who spell their names backwards because plebs are stupid or call themselves Dr. Acula (same), and live in Dontgonearthe Castle. (See Terry Pratchett books. Otto the vampire photographer who undies in a pile of ash every time he uses his flash is my favourite.)

Ps, those marshmallows are going over a hot cook-out blaze before having all the juice sucked out of them. Wha ha ha haaa! Slurp!

Must feel good to order someone around. I wonder if I'll ever know what it's like to be on the directing end instead of the slavery end…

Double edged sword, at least with the bossing-around I do. The customer service reps I work with are incapable of scratching their asses without direction, so despite my having 5548394 things to do a day, I can't do them because I keep getting interrupted by CSRs since all of management is in meetings half the time. Plus the people in the "internet fulfillment centers" are complete artards that can't ship out a pair of shoes without them being worn or two left sides, so they have to call me to figure it out. I've never seen a company so completely fucking dependent on their administrators.

Posted by Mystie @ 10/06/2006 7:32 AM EDT

My attempts to wean myself off sweets was almost destroyed by these articles until the marshmellows showed up on the scene.  Now I'm a gagosaurus.

Posted by Jessica Marie @ 10/06/2006 8:28 AM EDT

I'm surprised you like the lollipop/pop-rocks combo so much…I thought you hated anything grape flavored!

Posted by B-Dawg @ 10/06/2006 8:49 AM EDT

John The Gummy Body Parts have already been reviewed. I think it may be a couple years back, or maybe last years, something tells me 2 years ago? Can't be bothered to look but it's there. Got a bag myself this year.

Also seen those generic bag of marshmellow shapes in every store but they never looked daring enough for me to buy them.

And i don't think i will, as i found EVEN BETTER marshmellows.

They were in this transparant-like pumpkin and in individual clear bags with 'Happy Halloween' on them.

At first i was a lil dissapointed as they're just shaped like regular marshmellows.

But when i bit into one, HOLY HELL was i pleasantly surprised. Blood red ooze inside !

I doubt you could find a better Halloween marshmellow, and that includes Peeps.

Posted by Dan @ 10/06/2006 9:35 AM EDT

for those of you who are privileged enough to know what i'm talking about, I just consumed an eat 'n park smiley cookie with a pumpkin face on it.  and here's a little treat I discovered:

great pumpkin wallpaper and ecards!

Posted by bitchpants @ 10/06/2006 9:37 AM EDT

Ok, I have to ask, even if someone else already has…what's Halloweeny about "wacky watermelon"? There's nothing spooky about that. All it makes me think of is a pink piece of candy, and maybe it's cut into a crazy shape. Pink is not a scary color.

Posted by Mara @ 10/06/2006 10:19 AM EDT

In regards to the Orange Pops… I'm surprised you didn't stick the pumpkin face to your tongue for a few seconds in order to transfer the macabre jack o'lantern to your tongue - thus turning your tongue into a frightful site indeed

Posted by Nizzler @ 10/06/2006 10:19 AM EDT

Im pretty sure Im in love with this guy.

Posted by Kate @ 10/06/2006 11:37 AM EDT

I actually have Mediacom.  It also has WWE 24/7 which is also Halloween themed this months with old Halloween Havocs, and things like Papa Shango, Undertaker, Brood, and other spooky characters.

Posted by JLAJRC @ 10/06/2006 12:21 PM EDT

Wow, a lollypop with pop rocks. I gotta find one! And ya know, I can see where they would "hurt" a little more. The force of being sucked off of a hard lollypop would increase the force of explosion on the tongue, since it's confined on both sides. And I swear to God I could feel it as I read about them.

Posted by Ryane @ 10/06/2006 12:42 PM EDT

Imagine what the candy jars at Nick must look like!  That would be a good article: "What we have on our desks every holiday."

Posted by kingklash @ 10/06/2006 12:54 PM EDT

Hey, you know what would be awesome?  If the Year's Best Halloween Candy Part 3 entry was in 3-D!  And the Friday the 13th Part 3 theme song played in the background.

Posted by Rick Vodicka @ 10/06/2006 1:43 PM EDT

I got some of those spooky orange pop rocks, and I was super excited to try it, but I really don't like the grapey flavor of the lollipop. :(

Nizzler - I tried to get a pumpkin-tattoo on my tongue from those Charms lollipops, but it didn't work on me.. So maybe they weren't meant for that purpose, my tongue sucks, or my batch of them did. =\

Posted by Christine @ 10/06/2006 1:52 PM EDT

When I was a kid I had a Christmas version of those Pumpkin pops that had Santa Claus on it. I tried to bite it, for some unknown reason, and promptly broke my tooth. Good thing it was a baby tooth, because I'd be feeling stupid for that for the rest of my life.

Posted by Deuce @ 10/06/2006 2:57 PM EDT

We got some chocolate body parts a couple weeks ago, they were fantastic.  The eyeballs were essentially chocolate truffles.  We got some of those gummy eyeballs from Target last week and I must say that they were fuckin' disgustin'.  They had an awful taste.  Try mixing the taste of marshmallow with the texture of a soft gummy candy.  It's not as good as you would think.

Posted by freudguy @ 10/06/2006 3:07 PM EDT

Those spooky marshmallows may not be fun to just pop in your mouth, but they look fun-tastic when put into the cocoa you drink after a long night of trick or treating. Here in WA, Halloween can sometimes be pretty cold and/or wet.

Posted by Tiare @ 10/06/2006 3:47 PM EDT

dammit Matt, youve made me get McDs two days in a row.  How dare you affect my life in such a way.

Posted by Jack @ 10/06/2006 4:04 PM EDT

freudguy,
You got me thinking.  Why hasn't Cadbury jumped on the Halloween bandwagon?  It would only take about 10 minutes for them to reform those eggs into the best chocolate covered eyeballs ever made.

Posted by Wenthral @ 10/06/2006 4:08 PM EDT

I agree with Jack- I don't even LIKE McDonald's, yet I find myself wanting to go all the time now, due to the Monopoly excitment…

Posted by Muppet Baby @ 10/06/2006 6:20 PM EDT

What the hell is that blue-green thing? A spooky bell pepper? Evil Jalapeno? …Not that I'm complaining; i'd like to see little pepp-o-lanterns.

Posted by MagicFlyinLemur @ 10/06/2006 6:33 PM EDT

I had a bad experience at TGIFriday's a few months ago, and I haven't wanted to eat there since. My boyfriend and I ordered potato skins, and when they got to our table we noticed that one of them was all fucked up. The little scooped out potato boat was half blackened, because it was clearly made with a rotting potato. I don't know if the restaurants prepare the potatoes themselves or if they get them shipped in frozen from the TGIFatherland, but someone along the line took a rotten, mushy potato and covered it with cheese and bacon. And our server didn't notice/care, he just gave us a bored insincere apology when we asked not to be charged for the potato skins.

broomstickjockey,

Are you saying that you can watch full length movies on the cox website (www.cox.net)? If so where? If not what are you speaking of?

Posted by Cotter @ 10/06/2006 6:55 PM EDT

Sadly haven't seen any of these new ones yet but the Nerds rope. I don't buy a lot of candy, though I'd still like to pick up some candy pumpkins before the end of the season.

Haven't been to McDonald's either, partially because I hate their food and no amount of Monopoly is going to change that, partially because I haven't been in the McD's area recently (the closest McD's is over by the library, and I've just been too busy for the library of late).

Posted by starwenn @ 10/06/2006 8:22 PM EDT

I like those marshmallows.  They are shaped well, for a themed junk food.
I'm not a McD's bound person most of the time.  Something about the buns disturbs me.  But I am sure I'll be there to get the boy some happy meals before the Monopoly fest is over.
It's forcasted to snow here next week.  Made my day to see that.

Not only am I wearing a sweater, I am drinking hot chocolate.  It's all good in Pittsburgh.  Yay fall.

Posted by Jessica Marie @ 10/06/2006 10:01 PM EDT

Thank god for that.

I need something decent to read. Besides the hundreds of comments on Youtube praising me to high heavens lol.

As i've stated before in England for this Halloween, bit of a change of pace, getting quite fall-like here too, for some odd reason it's still kinda hot some days, but past 2 have been cold and dreery, YAY.

But i have reports from the girlfriend from being on the phone earlier that all is getting nice and fall-esqe in good ole Jersey.

P.S. AOD Review !!

Matt, I don't know if your a Battlestar Galactica fan, but during the show tonight they had a commercial for Spike TV's the Scream Awards for 2006.

Alright goddamnit!!! has NO ONE gone outside to look at the moon tonight? This is definintly the night of the lycanthrop!!

im drunk

Posted by theniXer @ 10/07/2006 1:44 AM EDT

Today was the first "Oh my god, it's Halloween!" night for me. And on purpose, my girl and I's "drunk couple" (that's what we, or I, affectionally call them) went to see the Texas Chainsaw blah blah blah Beginning. The day started out off-seasonably hot, rained its ass off and became insanely cold and windy.

Aside from key pinpoint tie-ins to the original remake, I'd have rather played Zuma on my phone. I felt I was watching the remaking all over again.

Good thing I used a three year old campus ID to get a five dollar discount…

You know, if they made those Monopoly pieces Halloween-style.. there could be Morguewalk and Dark Place and….

or a Caustic Avenue?

Eh, Bleeding Railroad was the best I could do. Being so excited I forgot to include my name.

So… can it stay Friday night until the countdown article is up?

Posted by Katherine @ 10/07/2006 10:58 AM EDT

Arr maties. Still coming down from Talk Like a Pirate Day. Just broke out the 'Ween gear. Totally halloweened here, but waiting on various Halloween franchise and Friday the 13th movies to arrive to get me Halloweened. And Charlie Brown specials. Ohhhh yeaahhhh.
