Halloween + Beer.

Better an hour or so past deadline than two hours or so past deadline. It's Saturday, I know, but let's consider this as Friday's Halloween Countdown entry, for organization's sake. It's a short, meandering ditty about Halloween's frequent team-ups with beer. I don't know.

Wow, I can't believe we're up to fifteen Countdown articles already. Time to go start preparing next week's batch of goodies. Be good, you.

Yeti: Just buy the fabric. Red and green plaid fabric is like uber-cheap. Just buy a long enough piece to wrap around you in the form of a kilt. Add a black leather belt and a slit up the side with some buttons maybe and you have your kilt for like 5-10 bucks.

Wooh!

Shit yeah. Beer!

I love the good old US of A for it’s love of making _everything_ holiday themed.

But alas i’m in the UK for halloween this year. And i’m not quite sure whether i’m going to see Halloween beer. They have all the big boys of the States, Bud, Coors, Corona, Miller, everything else you can name, but so far not seen any Halloween themes for the beer. The candies and chips have got it, but no beer so far, i can hope though.

If not i’ll just buy a few cases of bud and slap a pumpkin sticker on each bottle, no one at the party will be any wiser ;)

And yeah also looking forward to a competition, and i keep menaing to e-mail you but maybe i can get you to read this save me the trouble. MATT where is the AOD review for cryin out loud! Plan that into your countdown or thank your lucky stars there’ll be some angry people who been waiting years on it lol.

The hell? How many other states have such puritanical laws? I knew Utah had some weird ones but given the LDS population it makes sense. Thank goodness for California. Booze, abortions and medical marijuana for all!

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 09/30/2006 11:32 AM

It does sound like a Puritanical law? But it kinda works the opposite. We have liquor stores EVERYWHERE, my town has one small food store that could barely be considered a market, never mind a supermarket, but we have two decent-sized liquor stores (and two fairly small ones).

Chestnuts roasted by Katherine @ 09/30/2006 11:57 AM

Same in PA, liquor stores (“state stores”) abound. I was baffled to walk into a Maine supermarket one day and see they had a liquor aisle.

I must be the only man on Earth who doesn’t like beer. Tastes like mouthwash to me. I should try a wine cooler or one of those mixed drinks sometime.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 09/30/2006 1:12 PM

Magic Hat makes a halloween beer ASSORTMENT. Sam Adams sucks. I haven’t tried the magic hat yet but it’s called night of the living dead and that’s cool enough for me. With tastes like circus boy, jinx, and the mystery beer, it’s truly the jones soda of beer. Until something better comes along at least.

Was there some kind of plural zone shenanigans last night? Me and the Colonel were up to at least a quarter til 3 and this was NOT here. Refreshed a million times, too!!

Oh well, whatever. It’s here now. I spent the night perusing YouTube found some awesome stuff. My Chem doing all I want for Christmas is You. Take that Mariah!!!!!

But mainly it was many many viewings of their perfomance of Dead! at the Reading festival. Good times. It’s on my myspace page now if anyone is interested.

Chestnuts roasted by K- @ 09/30/2006 1:44 PM

Yeah this totally wasn’t here last night.

Ichabod Ale!

When you’re talking about Halloween and Beer, how can you miss all the assorted Pumpkin Ales that come out in the fall?

I can always tell its time to get excited about Halloween when I see the pumpkin ale at the grocery store.

Chestnuts roasted by def. @ 09/30/2006 3:09 PM

Ya, I’m one who doesn’t like booze either, but I like all the stuff like advertising blitzes that go with it, just not drinking it & getting drunk. Overrated.

Also, supermarkets around here have killed 2 birds with one stone by selling packs of ping pong balls in the beer section.

Elvira has DVDs of “Movie Macabre” out this season. It was the syndicated show that first brought her fame. If you only know her outside of MM, then turn in your Hallowe’en badge right now. MM and MST3K are prerequisites if you want to be snarky at the movies.

broomstickjockey, according to my All Saints’ Day Sense, and the handful of cards from back then, you are thinking of Coca-Cola’s “MONSTERS OF THE GRIDIRON” promotion. (Not to be confused with EA’s Mutant League Football.)

“Halloween/Beer Success #1: Supermarket Displays
When you go the supermarket, there will be beer. That’s a year-round fact.”

Not where I live! No beer in supermarkets here, I think province-wide. I know it’s not Canada-wide, because you can buy alcohol at supermarkets in Alberta (which I always thought was really weird as a kid when I’d visit my grandparents there) and probably in Quebec, but I dunno about everywhere else.

Chestnuts roasted by Evin @ 09/30/2006 5:39 PM

Yeah, I picked up a couple of the Elvira Movie Macabre DVDs at Wal-Mart for like $10 or so. I love Elvira so much. I’m still amazed at how she manages to keep her ta-tas in place.

I don’t like beer because I’m one of those people that thinks it all tastes like piss, but I got some locally made fresh apple cider! Mmmmm… cider!

‘Never been a fan of beer either, but the Halloween-themed promos are pretty damn cool. Nice to see the Cryptkeeper come out of his grave to promot Bud Light, too.

Chestnuts roasted by Retro Playback @ 09/30/2006 6:04 PM

Heh, great article, as always. Liked the conversation between Elvira and the Crypt Keeper.
Anyhoo, I’d hate to use this blog as my own personal whine-fest, but, uh, I’m gonna use this blog as my own personal whine-fest.
You see, it all started when I entered this one pirate-making contest at this one message board I frequent. I thought it was going to be all well and good, and that I’d be able to finish it up on time. But I haven’t exactly been working on it too hard, and the next thing I know, it’s the day of the deadline and I haven’t even filled out half of what I’m supposed to put in. Now I’m working double time in order to finish my pirate on time. *sigh* Oh, well, I really only have myself to blame.

So, did my last comment disappear into the oblivion that is the approval queue because of the link attached, or because Matt has added this variant of my name to the LIST too?

We’ll find out, if this comment doesn’t post :)

The Yeti – try searching for women’s plaid skirts too. If you’ve got manly sized hips, just be sure to get a large enough size (any women’s clothing site has a sizing chart if you need help). Also, stay away from the ones made for Halloween costumes and more toward school girl uniforms, the costumes tend to be pretty short…also, the suggestion to make one was pretty good, if you can sew.

Now, I’m not a beer drinker… SCOTCH AND BOURBON WHISKY, HELLS YEAH! Beer… eh…don’t care for it.

When I was in high school and college we’d drink it thru a funnel. That’s gonna be the only way I’ll ever do so again.

Anyway, When I lived in New York (Long Island mostly, then upstate NY) there were beer displays as far as the eye could see.

VERY elaborate ones, much like you describe.

But, I have since moved to the Pocono’s of Pennsylvania (which is cool because it sounds like TRANSYLVANIA), and they DON’T SELL BEER (or any alchohol) in grocey stores.

For BEER, you have to go to a BAR and buy some “to go”. Or you go to a beer distributor.

For other forms of sweet, sweet booze you have to go to a state-sanctioned liquor store.

It’s all kinds of messed-up.

Now, even though I don’t drink beer, I will buy ANYTHING that ELVIRA is hawking.

I LOVES me the Elvira.

One of my friends knows her (and has worked with her in the past) and I’ll always regret never asking him to bring me along when he would go to her house for work or to hang out.

I just didn’t think I should ask.
It wouldn’t be cool.

But it WOULD have been cool for him to OFFER.

Damn it.
Now I HATE that guy.

Well look at that my original post FINALLY showed up. Welcome home, Matt. Are we getting an SNT tonight? Or does this count? I like to know when to start talking about REALLY irrelevant stuff :)

XOXO

Chestnuts roasted by K- @ 09/30/2006 7:34 PM

I think we’ll keep this one as the SNT this week. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 09/30/2006 8:10 PM

Yay SNT! Yay talking about really irrelevant stuff!

^_^

I’m excited this week because I’ve got a check in the mail from the CEO of Zern’s. Apparently she found the article I wrote about Zern’s a while back and is totally in love with my work. A bunch of my photos are going to be featured in the 2007 Zern’s calendar and I’m going to be doing some cool projects and PR stuff for them. And I’m getting an allowance for gas and rounds of TMNT pinball! I’m sooooo excited!!!!

I hate beer and don’t handle liquor in general well. Plus, regular grocery stores in New Jersey don’t sell beer unless they have a special liquor store section (like the last grocery store I worked at in North Cape May). Anyway, I think a lot of the reason you see so many beer displays at this time of year probably has to do with football season…although Halloween parties may factor in somewhere.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 09/30/2006 9:10 PM

Here we have only beer/wine/liquor in stores selling only those things. But each town decides whether they have a city municipal store or if they can be privately owned. If they can be privately owned, the grocery stores have a store attached to them. Not having it in the grocery store doesn’t bug me. I used to work in one in WA state. I had to deal with telling drunk people it was illegal to sell them beer and the really drunk ones would sit and argue with you while all you want to do is ring up the groceries of the lady standing behind them.
I, also have never developed a taste for beer. I love wine. Vodka loves me. Happy SNT! (hey, poem!)
