Halloween Honey Buns & Pepperoni Recipes!

I don't think I've ever actually eaten a proper "honey bun," nor have I ever had any huge desire to start. But it's tough to resist when they start dressing foxy.

From Cloverhill, it's the official "Halloween Honey Bun." Sold at the pretty incredible price of 2.99 for a big box of six huge buns, I couldn't believe my good fortune. Honey buns, in orange bags, with pictures of spiders and bats on said bags. I was really hoping that the buns themselves would be shaped like something spooky, but dog shit ain't spooky. I'm still in love, though. They're so genericky and wholesomeish. The kind of thing you'd find for sale on an elementary school hot lunch line in October. If I thought kids would find it more "cool" than "insane," I'd totally give these out to trick-or-treaters and make sure their scarves were nearly tucked before sending them off.

I found these last night, along with a recipe booklet detailing how to turn Hormel pepperoni slices into Halloween heaven. That was a bigger issue, and I've written about it in the latest Countdown entry.

Man, I miss Sam’s Club. Nothing like buying a box of two dozen assorted Svenhard’s breakfast pastries. I have a mighty need for a raisinette right now. But you’re right, honey buns are definitely the kid picked last on the breakfast pastry playground. And that’s even when the bearclaws aren’t giving them wedgies.

Honey buns are mighty tasty. It’s also something you can call your lover if you’re feeling particularly cheesy at the time.

You don’t know what you’re missing by not eating honey buns.

Now I want a ghoulish pepperoni pizza. Darn you.

Tom Petty reigns supreme.

I took a bite of the one I opened; tasted like a regular glazed donut to me. Is it correct to assume that they all taste like this? I’ve never been fond of things that have “honey” in the title, becaue it’s usually meant “too much honey.”

I usually get Mrs. Freshley’s and they just take like dough and sugar. Sweet, sweet sugar.

First of all, I despise honey buns. They are tres nasty. But I still might buy a box for my dad… to try to get him in the Halloween spirit.

Second, that was the most adorable little pepperoni and cracker kitty I have ever seen in my entire life. Not that I’ve seen many pepperoni and cracker kitties, but ya know…

Third, Matt, only you could find a bell pepper masquerading as a pumpkin.

And fourth, I now feel compelled to get a job as a pizza delivery person just so I can deliver pizzas on Halloween night dressed in a reaper costume. I’ll bet I get the most tips of any other delivery driver that night…

I really want to make a Tom Petty cracker! No really, I love the idea of making halloween treats out of crackers and other food. I have to say I think you did a great job, I really love the pizza!

The mention of Farfetch’d just made that article all the better, in actuality I pictured a Farfetch’d – a Frankenstein creation Farfetch’d – smacking cracker-animals in the face with its spring onion and turning them eebil.

Y’know, the good kind of evil – like Tim Curry. But not.

I wonder if Curry is aware of his deification on this site.

/Cue someone posting as Tim Curry to thank us profusely.

Awesome job with the pizza. Now I want to make one.

Matt: You’re pretty much right about the taste of honey buns. Although I like to nuke mine for for about 30 seconds to make it less stale and more pastery-like.

That is one cool looking pizza. The closest thing around here to that is when Papa Murphy’s makes heart-shaped pepperoni pizzas on Valentines day.

I’ve always wanted to make a holiday-themed treat but I always found them to be more complicated then what their worth. From flag cakes on the 4th of July, Gingerbread men/house on Christmas, to those Halloween recipes The Food Network throws at us in October.

Wow that pizza looks really good. If it was earlier in the night I would’ve changed my dinner plans. Any chance of you reviewing the many pumpkin flavored/halloween themed beers that are out now? There are also spooky wines out, one of which is called something like “Satan”, but it definitely comes in a bottle shaped like a black cat. Check out Central Market if you got em there.

Honey Buns are good but when I ever I get a craving for them, I go to the store and end up seeing one of those 3x3x3 ft Cinnamon Rolls in the bakery with 4 pounds of glaze on them and I’m like “fuck honey buns”. But if someone else were to go get me one when I had the craving I’d pay them in hugs. No one ever takes that offer.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 09/28/2006 1:17 AM

Who knew honey buns could be so spooky?

Chestnuts roasted by Review the World @ 09/28/2006 1:24 AM

The Honey Buns I used to eat had this kinda thick layer of whitish icing on them, and it was gross because it would just peel right off like a layer of Fimo clay or something. It was a lil greasy too. I think they were Hostess.

Anyhow… Jesus, it’s time like this when I wish I liked pepperoni and that I knew of a vegan substitute for it! Well, next time I make a pizza, it will have a jack ‘o lantern face of veggies.

That In Store Recipe Display Thing Reminded Me Of A Really Good One I Came Across About A Year Ago. It’s Just A Simple Party Mix But It’s Tasty As Hell! The Four Things You Need Are: 1 Box Of Honey Comb Cereal, 1 Bag Of Mini Marshmallows, A Jar Of Peanuts, And 2 Of The Big Bags Of Oreo Minis. Dump ‘em All Into A Big Bowl, Mix And Serve! You Should Use Honey Roasted Peanuts Obviously, But Regular Is Good Too, Just Make Sure They’re Salted Or The Peanut Flavor Will Be Too Weak And Your Party Mix Will Chew Dong. Now, I Think This Stuff Is, If I May Indulge In The Use Of The Following Phrases, Da Bomb, Fo’ Shizzle. Word To Your Mother, Dawg. If I Didn’t Believe In This Recipe, I Wouldn’t Have Just Used Such Hardcore Gangsta Verbage, Would I? Plus I Wouldn’t Have Wasted This Much Time Typing This Long Assed Essay On My Fucking Cell Phone’s Number Keypad!!! But I Love You All That Much! So Please Someone Out There Give This Stuff A Try And Tell Me What You Think Of It, And What It Should Be Named. Try It!!!

Heh, I hate when I go overboard at the grocery. Then you’re having that mini panic attack up at the register while you’re watching the total soar past $160, then $180, and you’re going, “Why, why did I have to get the name brand cheese? Do I really need two bags of croutons?”

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 09/28/2006 2:22 AM

You could coat the honey buns with some Betty Crocker ready made chocolate frosting and give them out to the kids on Halloween claiming that they’re real shit.

To make the pepperoni recipes extra scary, substitue all of the bell peppers with Dorset Naga chillis and Red Savina habanero chillis.

How about getting some halloween peeps ghosts and decorating them with coloured cake gel out of tubes.

Thank you matt, you’ve made my halloween season strong and stronger still with your awesome find. By this time last year (and most previous years) I have staked out every conceivable place with halloweeny stuff 10 times each. This year I havent’ gone to nearly a sinle place, and I am getting frantic.

But the Hormel Website was awesome. I strongly suggest others go there as well. I could listen to that song from the ogan and watch those skeletons dance all night long. I just may.

It filled me with spooky wonder love and you betcha making time and going around tomorrow to everywhere. This is my time and if it takes Hormel’s brave push into Halloween to remind me, or push me into action, then so be it.

Yeah Hormel, Yeah to Matt! I am on an adventure tomorrow.

(seriously guys, go to the page.)

Chestnuts roasted by spooky @ 09/28/2006 3:24 AM

I declare this the finest Halloween Countdown to date…and it’s not even October yet! Good work, Matt.

Chestnuts roasted by Scott @ 09/28/2006 3:24 AM

The site IS awesome, Spooky!!!!! Those dancing skeletons made my night. Does it remind anyone else of Ultimecia’s Castle?

Chestnuts roasted by K- @ 09/28/2006 4:15 AM

Sam Adams Octoberfest Brew, pepperoni Tom Petty hors d vors (read “ordervs”… damn french) and a jack-o-lantern bobooli pizza face? Holy shit SNT, here I come!

You are absolutely right, though. Costumed Halloween themed food delivery would clean up anywhere. The reaper brings the pizza, Satan brings Chinese, Spongebob brings fried seafood, Darth Vader brings Mexican… Quick poll, “what costume for what food?”
