09/14/2006: Jason Voorhees IN 3D!
Friday the 13 Part 3 was a lot like all of the other F13 movies. Blood, guts, gore, nudity, sex and Jason Voorhees. The only difference? It was in 3D. And while it’s become nearly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the movie today in its original 3D splendor, it’s almost as fun to watch it on DVD — eyeballs don’t need to fly off the screen to be cool; the fact that they’re flying at all is cool enough. The film’s official home releases lacked the 3D gimmick, but the effects were just as easy to spot even without the glasses. Soooo, here are my five favorite 3D effects from Friday the 13th Part 3.
This ends our first week of the 2006 Halloween Countdown. I’ll be around the blog this weekend, but I hope you’ve enjoyed the kickoff articles and remember that you did when I start skipping days because television keeps giving me good things to watch instead of writing.

Whenever I see a 3D scene in a movie I still do the thing I did years ago and should have grew out of, reach out to touch it. I always feel like such a tool but I can’t stop myself. I go into the movie saying I won’t reach for it, but walk out with eyes on the back of my head; knowing that I will always be remembered as the wierd guy that reached out to the screen.

Very nice article, Matt. I love the F13 films…I’ll definitely have to check this one out.
That looks liek a great movie to see in 3D. Maybe one day they will release it!
Matt, great job with the countdown so far. I really have enjoyed it!

You know what else is good in 3D? The MAURY show, which I attended two tapings of today as part of my birthday celebration. Seriously.
//Really off topic, I have to tell the world that I saw Maury today. AND I was in the front row. IT WAS SO GOOD.

NO. But, I did get to point in the faces of teenage sluts and laugh. It was awesome. Totally a must if anyone’s ever in the city at nine in the morning. I’m so going back every Thursday they tape.

*hangs head in shame* I haven’t seen any of the F13’s since I was probably four years old. I loved them then, but I don’t remember any of them now. Looks like a visit to the local Hollywood Video is in order…
Denise: was Sylvia Brown on Maury??
By the way, my cat adores the new jukebox. She’s been laying by the speakers since I put it on and hasn’t moved an inch.
broomstickjockey
No, thank god.
Basically, the first taping was one leftover story from “shocking survival stories”, which I guess they were taping the other day and didn’t have time to finish. Then it went right into “Out of Control Teens”, which was AMAZING.
Then there was an hour break and we were fed pizza. Annnnnnnnd then we were herded back into the studio for the taping of “cheating boyfriends” blahblah.
Also, I want to point out that the way the crew places you in the audience is weird and selective, I think. Basically, my friend and I were seated in the front both times, and we were the only young, white females in the audience. We were seated around other younger, attractive people and the weird elderly people were situated to the far sides of the stage.
Maybe I read too much into that though.

You’re right, I’m an idiot. :p I don’t watch talk shows anyway.
Hey Matt, When your talking about “The Eyeball Scene” you stated “Jason just catches him outside, holds his head with his heads and squeezes until Rick’s eyeball flies right off the screen.”
Is this a typo or is there some part of F13 lore that I don’t know about?
P.s. does anyone know which Nightmare on Elm Street movie has the 3D effects in it?

I’ve got nothing on Jason, because I’ve only seen random bits and pieces of the movies, and I know, I should be shot in the eye with a spear for it. I’m sorry.
Went to Target today, they finally had the Halloween stuff out, although my giddy experience was knocked down about half because of a group of 3 women. I thought I was going to be arrested for murder - they were being that stupid. “OOOH BATS!” “Oh we need more spiderwebs - moooore spiders! Can you just buy like, a big thing of spiders??” and the most brutal… One of the 3 was looking at a tombstone and said they should get it, then she read what it said, which was “Welcome to the Graveyard” and then, I kid you not, the most annoying one of the bunch actually started singing “Welcome to the Jungle”.
*sigh* And these were women probably in their mid 30’s. They did alot more annoying crap, and weren’t even trying to be subtle about it, and I just wanted to punch them in their faces. But, I got some Jones Soda (Grape & Cider) and I saw the Fright Bites, but I was heartbroken when there were only a few bags left and they all looked like they were run over with a forklift. I didn’t get them.
Hopefully next time…

to be honest, i’ve never really been a fan of scary movies. blood and guts and gore arent my thing. im more of a…Tommy Boy kind of guy. so i can’t really say anything here.
but i’m sooo jealous. i totally want to be in the audience of ANY show taping. i would totally be that guy that Conan says “i love you, too, sir” to every night.

Freddy’s Dead 3D spot pretty much freaked me out when I was a kid. That was one of the first ‘horror’ movies I saw in the theater. We sat in the front row. I had to act big and bad ‘cuz I was with my school buddies, but I was definetly a little worried. Anyways…excellent article, once again, Matt!

Good stuff! I caught pt.3 in 3D last year here in Austin. Got in for free, too, since I was president of UT horror club that year :D. 3D movies are so awesome. Monster House was great and the 3D NMBC re-release should be just as cool, if not better. Time to kill frozen peppermint batties and watch Fresh Prince. God Halloween rocks. Matt, pleeeease go to a commercial haunted house and review it at some point this season. That’s one of the only things I find lacking in the otherwise superperfect countdowns!
I prescribe to the theory that anything is cooler in 3-D.
Hey Matt, I have a copy of part 3 in 3D on my computer. If you don’t have it, send me an e-mail and I’ll hook you up.

Awesome article. Shame I will never see F13 III in 3D or otherwise. See, I’m a total wuss who can’t handle scary movies. I dunno why, it’s not like they give me nightmares, but I think I think about them too much. I worry about someone plucking my eyeball out or getting trapped in the back of a garbage truck and crushed to death.
And yet I love Halloween.
Nice article again, Matt!
Even though, as I’ve said before, I’m not a horror fan, but I love Matt’s reviews of horror flicks, no matter how good or cheesy they are.
And lucky you Denise, but I’m more of a Colbert Report or Conan O’Brien person, and if and when you get a chance to see them, I’ll be interested lol.
Another AWESOME trip down memory lane MATT. Here is a question (Poll) how many people have sat through a Jason-a-thon and what was the last movie in the series at that point. I’ve done it twice, the first time “Jason Takes Manhattan” was the final movie in the series; the second time “Jason Goes to Hell” was the last chapter. I don’t think I would have enough time to pull that off now with Jason X & Freddy Vs Jason added to the mix.

Matt, great article. As always the Halloween Count Down kicks ass.
I’m looking forward to The Night of the Living Dead 3D. http://www.nightofthelivingdead3d.com/main.html
I’m not a big fan of remakes, but from the trailer the only things it has in common with the original is the title and zombies. So, it gets a pass. I just want zombies in 3D.
3d is great, but not when they release 3d for your tv.

Hockey masks, machetes… mmmm
I never feel like the 3-D stuff works as well as I expect it to. Maybe when there’s submersible TankTV ™ then we can like feel the entirety of the show or something crazy like that. Similar to that bacta tank or whatever in Star Wars that Luke was in. Except like… virtual reality..

I’ve never seen an F13 movie after the first couple. Jason scared my mother, so therefore I wasn’t allowed to see those movies. She had the same thing going on with Freddy. Which is bizarre, as they more or less let me read, watch, and listen to anything else ….
… except 3-D movies. My father had a personal vendetta against them. He hated the “cheap gimmick”, so I have never experienced a 3-D movie.

Ryane: I HATE people like that in stores. Last time I went to Target I was surrounded by Loud Cell Phone Talking Man and two 13 year old girls who were constantly going “Oh that guy is hot, but this other guy is SO UGLY” “Yeah he’s ugly. But you know who’s hot is…” I swear they went on like that for HALF AN HOUR.
Also, yesterday at the mall there were two teenage girls sitting in one of those car machines for little kids to ride in, screaming at the tops of their lungs. Repeatedly. I quite literally wanted to kill them.

Friday the 13th 3D was the first Jason movie I ever saw (on HBO or cinemax). I, too, have never seen it in actual 3-D but the red/blue 3D stuff doesn’t work too well for me yet I still have the 3D glasses they gave out at Freddy’s Dead years ago. However, the 3D in the Busch Gardens Williamsburg ride Curse of DarKastle rocked my ass, even scared this 35 year old at times.
I went on a week long Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street Uber Marathon last year for Halloween culminating of course with Freddy vs. Jason. As of right now, I don’t care if I ever see any of those again (except I might take my son to the special of screening of Elm Street next week).
I’m stoked, my son and I are raiding stores for Halloween stuff all day tomorrow on a father/son outing! Target and Halloween Express will be my bitches! Actually, I will be there bitch, I guess. I’m such a Halloween whore.

Somewhere, somehow, someone needs to re-issue the cheesy 80s 3-D movies on DVD, in full 3-D greatness. Amityvill 3-D, Jaws 3-D. Friday the 13th 3-D…
God, I can only hope they do it!

My oldest sister is somewhat dyslexic, and somehow she can’t process anaglyphic (red/blue type) images properly. The goggles do nothing, literally. With the remastering going on for special edition DVDs, shouldn’t there be a lot more 3D movies out? Hell, I would even get Jaws 3D if it could be seen as it was intended. I own Spy Kids just for the glasses. And the SI Swimsuit Issue with the 3D section.

My grandmother got to see Bwana Devil in theatres and basically rode the 3-D craze from start to finish. She claims that the lack of 3-D media in the modern world is the second most disappointing thing about the year 2000, after the whole flying cars thing.
Add in the fact that my parents’ first three dates were all A New Hope, and you can see that I was doomed to nerdhood from the very beginning.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen Jaws 3, and I’ve never seen it in 3D, but it seems to me that I remember the effects were very cheesy. I seem to remember a scene where everyone’s underwater, looking out of a window that was in some kind of control room, and Jaws pretty much decided to ram through the window. I remember that all they were doing was taking a picture of a Great White and enlarging it to make it look like he was swimming at them. Very cheesy indeed!

Lemur: never caught on in the US? What about Somewhere Out There? Okay, maybe it didn’t, that was during the small window that I had MuchMusic. I wish I had it back too, because it blew MTV and 2 out of the water.
To be honest, I like that they’re a secret. Best kept secret in music, IMO. I’ve been a fan since Clumsy. So that’s 2 of my Top 5 down, I’m sure we’ll get around to arguing the rest.

Man I remember that running constantly on cable one summer. The scene I always remember is the pregnant girl getting the blade through the back while laying on the hammock. I didn’t see another f13 movie until years later and was so dissapointed that Jason was always on screen unlike the few glimpses you get in the early movies.

K-Neg –MuchMusic was awesome. I cried the day stopped the Canadian feed and started broadcasting off of Long Island as MuchMusic USA. It was a very sad day in my household (My sister is the big OLP fan — I’m familiar with them, I won’t turn them off, but I can’t say I own anything by them). I have never forgiven them for turning into Fuse. Fuse is good and all, but it’s too genre-specific in it’s programming and I miss the old random video selection. I love going to Canada, as it’s STILL the MM we know and love, and the French Canadian feed is equally kick ass even if you don’t speak French.

Thank you for finally writing an article about F13 Part 3! It’s my favorite one of the series but I think you have to do at least one review of a Nightmare on Elm Street movie this Halloween. Is anyone going to see the original Nightmare on Elm Street next week? Its playing on the big screen in select theaters for 2 days only, one of those days being my birthday, 9/21!

I think the F13 articles are some of the best ones on this site. Of course, I am a fan so I may be biased. One of the better Jason kills is in part III, the hand-stand kill. Excellent.
Part III definitely deserves the full-article treatment. It is not the best F13 but including the bikers and the Shelly run, there sure is some fodder there.
For those who haven’t seen it, part III stands out for these reasons:
(1) “Jason can’t be killed” REALLY makes a big appearance here.
(2) there is a different guy playing Jason and his take is pretty unique
(3)Higgins Haven makes its first and last appearance (that place was so dirty/gross/scary).
(4)the 3-D was as gratuitous as Matt claims.
(5) the deaths (which were always unnecessary) are REALLY UNNECESSARY in this one. A married couple at the beginning gets whacked for NO REASON, bikers, hippies, etc.

Mostly, 3D glasses at home do nothing for me.
I was at target yesterday, and they had a HUGE corner of the store dedicated to Halloween. I could hardly believe it. Me and my son spent a good hour looking at all the goodies. For real though, with the exception of the wall with the pics of costumes at Party city, the Target had more space dedicated to it.
I was also able to pick up Martha’a Halloween issue. And some of the glow sticks that we’re gonna break open as soon as I turn off the menacing light of the computer. Living with a 4-year-old rocks.

Hey Denise,
I do believe they strategically place the “hot people” in the front on talk shows. I was at a Tonight Show with Jay Leno and a Carson Daly Show taping in April this year. They put all the purty young folks in the front, and the scary old people in the back. I’m not exactly a knockout, but obviously I looked better then most of the elderly tourists so I got front row on Carson Daly.
Side Note: Jay seems very personable and didn’t seem that frightened when I screamed “Bye Jayyyyyyy!” as the audience filed out. He smiled a nice fake “good god she’s weird” smile then continued chatting with producers. Carson seemed like an ass.. although he is nice eyecandy.
Oh yeah, finally got to Target and got my Jones soda, but I’m waiting until Halloween to drink it. I can’t wait.

Lemurcat + K-Neg: Our Lady Peace rocks. They opened for the Rolling Stones here in Canada last summer, and put on a great show. And I agree- MuchMusic has gone downhill a LOT since I used to watch it heavily in high school, but it still kicks MTV’s ass. Too bad you don’t get it anymore.

dj lisas Maury was SO chill. The producers pulled girls from the audience to dance on stage to get the crowd ready (I was NOt feeling it, but totally will the next time I go - and there WILL BE a next time). Did anyone ever play those 3D videogames back in the early to mid 90s? They sold some special glasses that worked with different games; each game had to be programmed to work with the glasses.
Personally, I’d LOVE to see the Wii come out with some 3d glasses. Along with the new controller it would make for a super-immersive experience. Can you imagine riding around on a horse in that new Zelda game, shooting arrows by pulling back a virtual bow, and watching your arrow fly “away” from you and hit baddies?

I remember the 3d scenes from the End of the one Nightmare on Elm Street movie. It was Freddy’s Dead I think. They had to use 3D glasses to go into some weird altered state of reality. the scene at the end with thousands of little Freddy heads freaked me out in the theater.

I was lucky to see F13 3D at a Drive-In around last Halloween, it was the last movie in an all-night horror movie marathon. The Effects were nothing short of amazing, even the damn Yo-Yo. Even with all of its campy glory, it’s films like F13 P3 that literally HURT its viewers with terrific eye strain. When your eyes are constantly adjusting to various convergences (ie. things coming out at you constantly), you get a terrible headache by the end of it.
Still, this is certainly not the worst entry in the ’80s cannon of 3-D films. Stuff like TREASURE OF THE FOUR CROWNS, JAWS 3-D, PARASITE (with a young Demi Moore) and THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE are all awful, and I’m sad to say I projected all of them theatrically at some point.
If you do get to see F133D, see it properly, with polaroid glasses rather than anaglyph ones. It truly makes a difference, particularly with the off-the-screen stuff.
