09/14/2006: Jason Voorhees IN 3D!

Friday the 13 Part 3 was a lot like all of the other F13 movies. Blood, guts, gore, nudity, sex and Jason Voorhees. The only difference? It was in 3D. And while it’s become nearly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the movie today in its original 3D splendor, it’s almost as fun to watch it on DVD — eyeballs don’t need to fly off the screen to be cool; the fact that they’re flying at all is cool enough. The film’s official home releases lacked the 3D gimmick, but the effects were just as easy to spot even without the glasses. Soooo, here are my five favorite 3D effects from Friday the 13th Part 3.

This ends our first week of the 2006 Halloween Countdown. I’ll be around the blog this weekend, but I hope you’ve enjoyed the kickoff articles and remember that you did when I start skipping days because television keeps giving me good things to watch instead of writing.

i totally bought Fright Bites tonight. I dont know, Matt. Mine taste just as salty as any other tortilla chip. Maybe you just got a weak batch.

I also found one of the greatest Halloween cards ever. Click my name and read my blog. It’s intense.

the best thing about this time of year: pumpkin pie blizzards at Dairy Queen. Pretty much the best things ever. and breaking off the white part of the candy corn and sticking them to your teeth like fangs. yup.

Hey Denise,

I do believe they strategically place the “hot people” in the front on talk shows. I was at a Tonight Show with Jay Leno and a Carson Daly Show taping in April this year. They put all the purty young folks in the front, and the scary old people in the back. I’m not exactly a knockout, but obviously I looked better then most of the elderly tourists so I got front row on Carson Daly.

Side Note: Jay seems very personable and didn’t seem that frightened when I screamed “Bye Jayyyyyyy!” as the audience filed out. He smiled a nice fake “good god she’s weird” smile then continued chatting with producers. Carson seemed like an ass.. although he is nice eyecandy.

Oh yeah, finally got to Target and got my Jones soda, but I’m waiting until Halloween to drink it. I can’t wait. :)

Went to Sam’s Club last night. They have this year’s Monster Triple Pack!! Even though the took away all the shiny foil packaging that last year’s version had, I bought two boxes. I read X-E while eating breakfast every morning. Now I can be eating Franken/Chocu/Booberry at the same time!!!

I love Halloween!! Thanks, Matt and everyone else for keeping me company when everyone else thinks I’m fucked up for caring about all this shit. Now, on to the SNT!!!

I saw ‘Superman Returns’ in IMAX with the added 3D scenes- it was absolutely incredible, and my first experience with a 3D film. I never got any 3D movies at my old childhood rental place, so I could never see one at home.

Lemurcat + K-Neg: Our Lady Peace rocks. They opened for the Rolling Stones here in Canada last summer, and put on a great show. And I agree- MuchMusic has gone downhill a LOT since I used to watch it heavily in high school, but it still kicks MTV’s ass. Too bad you don’t get it anymore. :(

Listening to the Halloween jukebox now for the first time since last Halloween (you may be asking “what kind of XE reader is this guy?” and that would be a valid question). Due to my unfamiliarity with the playlist, however, I’m just curious if anyone can point out which tracks are “new.”

IHAQ Thanks and congrats on your son’s birthday. :)

Invader Norbert I am too much in love with white trash to bother with smarter talk shows.

mady reeves It is across from Penn. In the middle of 33rd, across from Old Navy. There’s a big ole Maury sign in front of the entrance.

dj lisas Maury was SO chill. The producers pulled girls from the audience to dance on stage to get the crowd ready (I was NOt feeling it, but totally will the next time I go – and there WILL BE a next time). Anyway, Maury comes out and starts DANCING WITH THEM. And during the breaks between guests he would talk to people and take pictures. He also said that he should be on Dancing with the Stars – not Jerry. He RULES.

Haha right on Denise.. whenever I get to the east coast I’m gonna try to hit up the Maury show and SNL .. even though it’s a bitch to get into Saturday Night Live I hear. I agree, Maury does RULE.

We are not still talking about OLP are we? Bullet for my Valentine wipes their arse with OLP songs.

Here’s a random fact: Dave Katims who played Chuck the hippie is now a stand-up comic living in the Seattle area. I’ve seen him perform a bunch and talked to him. Nice guy. He even mentions F13 in his act.

Around 1987 when I was about 5 I got to see Captain EO the 3-D show in Disneyland starring a then-at the top of his game Michael Jackson. It was the best 3-D ever, I nearly fell off my seat. Has anyone else ever been there?

OLP is so wonderful! I havent been a fan of Much Music for awhile. I vowed never to watch it after Rick was gone. I was so in love with him when I was 16, and I was in love with Raine from OLP when I was 16. Just to note I’m not gonna watch annoying Celeb gossip on Entertainment Tonight Canada just to see Rick, I will just go without.

Did anyone ever play those 3D videogames back in the early to mid 90s? They sold some special glasses that worked with different games; each game had to be programmed to work with the glasses.

Personally, I’d LOVE to see the Wii come out with some 3d glasses. Along with the new controller it would make for a super-immersive experience. Can you imagine riding around on a horse in that new Zelda game, shooting arrows by pulling back a virtual bow, and watching your arrow fly “away” from you and hit baddies?

I remember the 3d scenes from the End of the one Nightmare on Elm Street movie. It was Freddy’s Dead I think. They had to use 3D glasses to go into some weird altered state of reality. the scene at the end with thousands of little Freddy heads freaked me out in the theater.

Rosella (aka Joey)- Yes, I think it will be playing in most major cities throughout the country for two days only (Sept. 20 & 21) in honor of the new Nightmare on Elm Street DVD release. They are playing a montage of Freddy’s best kills before the movie…can’t wait to see it!

This is way off topic (off season, even) but I just found out Trans-Siberian Orchestra is coming here in November. Oh hell yes, I HAVE to go see that.

That is all, you may return to your regularly scheduled Halloween-and-OLP discussion.

I wish they would make the old Collegeville costumes in adult sizes, just for giggles. It would make my Hallowe’en to see grown-ups in vinyl jumpsuits printed with a picture of a cartoon and the cheapo platic mask with the elastc string. I would buy one, of course.

I was lucky to see F13 3D at a Drive-In around last Halloween, it was the last movie in an all-night horror movie marathon. The Effects were nothing short of amazing, even the damn Yo-Yo. Jason was breaking out of the screen as the sun was rising, We had McDonald’s breakfast on the way home, easily one of the best nights EVER!

Even with all of its campy glory, it’s films like F13 P3 that literally HURT its viewers with terrific eye strain. When your eyes are constantly adjusting to various convergences (ie. things coming out at you constantly), you get a terrible headache by the end of it.

Still, this is certainly not the worst entry in the ’80s cannon of 3-D films. Stuff like TREASURE OF THE FOUR CROWNS, JAWS 3-D, PARASITE (with a young Demi Moore) and THE MAN WHO WASN’T THERE are all awful, and I’m sad to say I projected all of them theatrically at some point.

If you do get to see F133D, see it properly, with polaroid glasses rather than anaglyph ones. It truly makes a difference, particularly with the off-the-screen stuff.
