09/13/2006: Fright Bites and a new Halloween Jukebox!

I have a feeling you’re going to want what today’s Halloween Countdown entry is about. Made by Snak King, it’s “Fright Bites,” the only tortilla chips in history shaped and colored like bats, pumpkins and ghosts! They’re better in concept than execution, but even a shittily executed bat-shaped tortilla chip is welcomed.

I have a friend who chooses to go by the name “Tummi” whenever I mention him on the site. I’m not sure why; he’s never expressed any major love for Disney’s Gummi Bears. But, as he’s been a big help behind the scenes, I’ll call him what he wants.

Aside from handling a lot of the backstage encoding, Tummi is responsible for the holiday jukeboxes. This year, he’s revitalized the Halloween Jukebox with a new order, new songs and new hidden messages meant to inspire you to kill people. Click here to give it a listen! New songs include everything from the Count Duckula theme to MC Hammer rappin’ philosophical about the Addams Family. There was only so much he could do with the pitiful amount of real Halloween songs available, but I think it’s pretty rockin. Thank you TUMMI. The new juke is also linked in all of the 2006 Countdown entries for easy access.

I hope I find these chips. Even though they’re totally misshapen, they still look awesome.

All I have to say is WOW. I’m totally getting those chips. They are made by the same people that make the Salsitas, I think! KMart here I come! I gotta add – everytime I see “Snak King”, I think of “Sofa King”…

Thank you, Tummi – I’m listening to your jukebox right now. :) I now have both versions saved on my WMP10.

Haven’t had a chance to read the whole thing yet but I just wanted to say that I saw these at Target and knew IMMEDIATELY that they’d show up on the countdown.

I’m just glad to have the Halloween Jukebox back–thanks Tummi!

Gonna play the Juke later on…happy to see Halloween coming along…man, can’t wait to see how this shapes up sooner to the 31st of October! WooooOO!

Yet another reason to hate living in Canada, where the market for chips reminscent of death encompasses me and that crazy guy who wears the santa hat and does push-ups int he street.

Another SIGH. But now that I look harder, those chips do look a bit like the scraps of stuffing that they shove into couches. Hmmm…”Sofa King,” indeed.

Ghosted by RoadBlock @ 09/13/2006 9:57 PM EDT

Okay, sorry for the (almost) double post. But now that I’ve read it, I have to say two things:

1) The bag not only used the word “parameter” in an unusual context, they used it incorrectly. I’m pretty sure they meant “perimeter”

2) I need that blood bowl.

Ghosted by jazzy @ 09/13/2006 9:58 PM EDT

“if you guys wouldn’t mind, I’d like to be called Sting from now on”

“yeah, yeah, get us another beer, GORDY!!!”

Kid Nicky, I am aware of the new Mario Hoops game. The guy’s name is Vivi!!! I hope Selphie is around. Selphie makes everything worth it!!!

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/13/2006 9:58 PM EDT

Thanks Matt, Tummi and anyone else who puts time and effort into XE. It is much appreciated.

Those chips DO kind of suck, but I would still totally get them for any Halloween party. My Wal-Mart is still void of any Halloween goodness. Thank God I can get my “fix” here at XE.

Ghosted by Muppet Baby @ 09/13/2006 10:04 PM EDT

First of all, you have no idea how hungry I am for tortilla chips now.

Second… COUNT DUCKULA!!! OMG! When was the last time I thought about that cartoon?! They should SO put it out on DVD!! Who wants to start a petition?!

Ghosted by broomstickjockey @ 09/13/2006 10:16 PM EDT

I know what I am buying tomorrow while shopping, that is if they are in Canada. To reiterate Muppet Baby’s first sentences: Thanks Matt, Tummi and anyone else who puts time and effort into XE. It is much appreciated.

On the topic of the blood bowl, I am forever nervous around clear plastic things with blood in them. This all stems from one wonderful Halloween were a child decided to stab me in the gut with one playfully. It didn’t penetrate, but it did leave a big bruise and an interesting story.

Ghosted by Phil G. @ 09/13/2006 10:17 PM EDT

The duck’s already out on DVD. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/13/2006 10:17 PM EDT

Yeah, I probably should have looked for Count Duckula before posting… I found the first season on DVD… and it should be in my mailbox in the next two weeks!!! Woo!!

Ghosted by broomstickjockey @ 09/13/2006 10:21 PM EDT

That bowl rocks, and the chips, no matter how scarily misshappen they are look yummy.By the by a primus toy came out the other day,and it might make a good companion to your unicron article from a while back.

Ghosted by Mightystalfos @ 09/13/2006 10:27 PM EDT

that bleeding skull bowl is awesome.

Hurray for Halloween jukebox! Hurray beer!

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 09/13/2006 10:34 PM EDT

For those interested Welcome to the Black Parade is now on iTunes. Download the EP, though. You get a 40 minute “interview” with the band talking about all the songs on the new album and you get to hear snippets of them.

So worth the dollar I spent. Make sure it’s the EP, I downloaded the single first, thus costing me 2 dollars. It’s all good.

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/13/2006 10:34 PM EDT

Jukebox rocks! I was having a crappy week, but now things are so much brighter!

Ghosted by Mr. Boligarky @ 09/13/2006 10:35 PM EDT

That bowl is cool. But what happens if it has a crack in it? Will the blood go all over the food? Plus, would it be edible and would you want to eat it?

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 09/13/2006 10:39 PM EDT

yeah, JLAJRC, I thought the same thing…then I thought that maybe that meant I was turning into an adult (would kids really give a shit if toxic “blood” spilled on their chips?), so I pushed the matter out of my mind entirely.

Ghosted by Rosella (aka Joey) @ 09/13/2006 10:42 PM EDT

Ah, it’s not Halloween season until I’ve heard track #10 on this year’s jukebox “Anything Can Happen on Halloween.” Reminds me of Matt’s review (click my name). I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as hard in my whole life.

Ghosted by Mr. Boligarky @ 09/13/2006 10:45 PM EDT

We had a going away party at work today that included a bunch of tortilla chips and various dip/salsas. If I had brought the Fright Bites, I honestly believe that my coworkers would have carried me around on their shoulders while forgetting all about the fellow employee who was leaving.

PS I had Pilsbury Halloween cinnamon rolls this morning. They were wonderful, all halloweeny cinnameeny.

Ghosted by freudguy @ 09/13/2006 10:58 PM EDT

Might have to look for these. For one thing, tortilla chips are some of the only junk foods I’ll eat. For another thing, those bats look like blue corn chips. I love blue corn chips. They have a heartier flavor and are thicker than the regular ones.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 09/13/2006 11:10 PM EDT

o_O Halloween themed Tortilla chips?! Brilliant! The more Halloween-themed foods there are, the better. I haven’t seen any of the Halloweeny Cereals at the supermarket yet- I hope they get them, I want Franken Berry cereal this year…or Boo Berry as I’ve not yet tried it. Halloween peeps are out there though, I scored me some the other day. ^__^

Ghosted by The Boglin @ 09/13/2006 11:23 PM EDT

Do any Canadians know of supermarkets that are known to sell cereals like Booberry and Frankenberry? Specifically Southern Ontario, but I can go up to Toronto sometimes. I have always wanted to try these but have yet to get the chance.

Ghosted by Phil G. @ 09/13/2006 11:27 PM EDT

I think I just lost a year or two off my life. Thanks to Mr. Boligarky I finally read The Worst Witch review. I don’t know why I never read it. I’ve heard about it alot, but Jesus Christ, I had no idea to expect all of that. I laughed so hard I crossed the line of knowing whether I was still laughing or just plain crying. I physically had to stop and take a break during Tim’s video. Wow…

Ghosted by Ryane @ 09/13/2006 11:41 PM EDT

huzzah for two features in one! way to be, matt! those chips are horribly adorable.

i can’t wait for this years halloween KidCuisine’s. The Target I worked at this past year kept them in stock well into January when I pulled them all out of the case myself and said it just wasn’t right.

Ghosted by brianfax @ 09/13/2006 11:45 PM EDT

You’re welcome Ryane. Well, I suppose we should thank Matt though. Seriously, the first time I read that, the tears were rolling down my face because I was laughing so hard. What had made it even more funny was the fact that I’d seen the Worst Witch many times as a child, but not for such a long time that I’d forgotten just how ridiculous it is… Anyway, thanks to Matt’s fever-induced review, I can’t see any Tim Curry related item without laughing.

Revamped jukebox = Halloween awesomeness! Kudos to TUMMI for this ‘un! The ‘Shaun of the Dead’ theme made my night!

Great, now I have to go listen to Escape (The PiƱa Colada Song).
Echoing the appreciation for Matt and Tummi and Brian and anyone else that makes X-E what it is. Thanks guys!

Well…I got back from The Who concert earlier, and it was just f’ing great. The opening band, Peeping Tom, was crappy, which made The Who 100x better in comparison. They played many kickass songs, including most of the songs off their new album, which in concert talk is “Everybody get up and go to the bathroom!” There was also a 1/2 hour Encore, among the songs played is Pinball Wizard (one of my favs), but my dad was dissappointed that they didn’t play Summertime Blues at all.

Also, Click on my name to go to one of my most recent blog entries, where I list my 5 Worst Pokemon Ever. So here’s a topic: What are your 5 choices for Worst Pokemon Ever? This was mine:

5. Shuckle
4. Dunsparce
3. Nosepass
2. Magikarp
1. Porygon2

…You’ll have to click my name to see the whole reasoning. Also, I got it on fark! It’s here: http://forums.fark.com/cgi/fark/comments.pl?IDLink=2287927 About 35 people telling me I need a life/calling me a pedophile.

Now for the Countdown Stuff = Awesome. I just hope we see Ghost With The Most soon. I’ll repeat this from last year: “Bag To Put Leaves In” = Brilliant.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/14/2006 12:30 AM EDT

from an extreme pokemon gamers point of view, im going to have to argue against:

Shuckle – super super high defense and special defense. this fucker can take hit after hit and be used as some varying Baton Passer for all kinds of crazy stat uppers for your Scizor or Kingdra just lying in wait in your team

Magikarp – point in case: he evolves into Gyarados. I know he has a 4X weakness to Electric types thanks to the wonderful combination of Water/Flying…but this guy is just awesome.

How about Chimecho? or Unown? or Aipom (despite his immense cuteness).

nerd alert!

Ghosted by brianfax @ 09/14/2006 12:39 AM EDT

brianfax, if I had been doing a Top 10, I would’ve included those 3 (plus I’d have to think of 2 more, and I’m just too tired for that now)

And In my blog and this one, I’m open for ideas of other Top 5 Worst, and I currently stand by my choices.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/14/2006 1:07 AM EDT

I have this kickass chalice that works in the same manner as all those other bleeding decorations. I just love it; the only way it could be better is if it could more liquid.

Ghosted by marril159 @ 09/14/2006 1:10 AM EDT

okay, well I’m with you on terms of design and thought process when putting those first 5 pokemon on the market. im just way too into the games.

could we expand to include Hoot Hoot? cause that thing just plain pisses me off.

charmander continues to rule all. i got my pokemon wallets in the mail the other day. 15 of em for $15. theyre nuts. i’ll take pictures tomorrow and post them up somewhere.

I have to thank you too, Mr. Boligarky! I just went and read the review of The worst witch, and i was literally laughing so hard i couldnt breathe! that music video!! good lord!! I love you matt. In a completely non-creepy way. haha That was the best! I cant believe i didnt know about it before!! That made my night…

I really want to check out the revamped jukebox but I’m on-air here at my parttime job pretending to sound happy about Nick Lachey and Michael McDonald songs. Not that I don’t like those artists, I just have to sound overly happy for any soccer moms up and listening at 2am on a Thursday morning. But yes when I get home I will check out the jukebox for updated Halloween goodness.

Ghosted by dj lisas @ 09/14/2006 4:54 AM EDT

Yea, Rosella. You’re right. We are all kids at heart.

While I’ve never heard of Fright Bites, I’m pretty sure one of the majors (Tostito maybe?) does the same thing, or at least used to. Only they would just make them black/orange and just in the shape of bats. Who’s ever seen an orange bat?

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 09/14/2006 5:45 AM EDT

Do The Freddy is my favorite song of all time. It’s official.
Knegative (and whoever else cares)- I have no idea who Selphie is,but when I beat the game on normal difficulty, the end credits showed a bunch of those cactus men dancing, and a little white cat walking around on this red ball. I don’t know if they’re unlockable playable characters though. Either way,it’s a worthy purchase, since regardless of FF fanservice,it’s an awesome game. Don’t listen to the reviewers on this one, they’re all trashing it since they didn’t bother learning the stylus controls. After you get used to them, you wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ahh!
I so needed this article this morning. I needed a reason to look forward to doing groceries tonight! Now, I have it!
Thanks and I’ll be listening to the jukebox this evening.

Whoa. I totally want those chips. Tortilla chips are one of my favorite foods anyway, and -colored- tortilla chips are the best things in the universe, but shaped ones are ten times the awesome, if that is possible.

Ghosted by razzkat @ 09/14/2006 8:33 AM EDT

Bruce Campbell would be proud of that display.

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 09/14/2006 9:46 AM EDT

Kid Nicky, those cacti are known as Sabotenders or Cactaurs. If you want to get technical they can also be Cactrots or Quactaurs, depending on the Final Fantasy in question, in VI and X, respectively.

Also, the cat is most definitely a Moogle. I’m pretty sure I heard about Cactaurs and Moogles being playable characters. I’d personally like to know who the other humanoid characters are. My money is on Selphie as she usually makes the cut in extra-FF games, being the spunky, can’t-help-but-love-her character of the series. And, while Rikku is great too, she will never be as good as Selphie. If you find a girl in a yellow dress, with flipped hair, that’s her.

The game will assuredly be my first DS purchase.

Every so often, I like to play the halloween theme when a customer walks in the door. Good fun. I also sadly know every word to the Adam’s Family Rap. It has been stuck in my head, just from reading about it.
Also, I freaking love Martha Stewarts Halloween Issue. Yes, she’s nutty, but I think her nuttiness adds something special at Halloween. And that issue comes out tomorrow.

For years … YEARS! … I spoke of The Worst Witch, which I had seen on HBO some long ago afternoon when I was in the third grade. And they all told me it wasn’t real. But it was, and you all know that. I feel so validated. And I can also sing the line “Has anybody seen my tamborine?” without feeling like a complete tool. Thanks Matt, thanks X-E, thanks bloggers!

Ghosted by LemurCat @ 09/14/2006 12:11 PM EDT

MMmmm… crunchy bats. What kind of dip goes with that?

For those of you who are planning your parties early, may I recommend a site with plenty of creepy free goodies to download?
http://www.ravensblight.com
I recommend the ouija screensaver, and the papercraft boardgames.

i’m using dialup so i cant really listen to the jukebox, but I think that the “Batty” song from FernGully should be on there. i was singing it in the shower this morning.

Ghosted by brianfax @ 09/14/2006 1:04 PM EDT

brianfax that’s a creepy thought. Eww. Even though every once in a while I think of that movie, ferngully. It’s not a bad movie for a cheap disney movie (they didn’t treat it like a huge summer one like lion king) If I see a cheap copy of it I’ll pick one up.

Ghosted by Goob @ 09/14/2006 1:48 PM EDT

what’s a creepy thought? imagining me doing the CabbagePatch in the shower will going “yo the name is batty the logic is erratic potato in a jacket!”

i think i need a DVD version of Ferngully as well. I’ve been watching a Disney Channel taped version for like the past 10 years.

does everyone else know about the new Nightmare Before Christmas (in 3-D) and songs covered by (eep) Fall Out Boy and Panic! at the Disco? The 3-D thing might be cool, but as much as I love FOB, that should remain un-touched. I’m not going to say anything about Panic!…that subject just upsets me enough.
