09/11/2006: New Jones Soda for Halloween ‘06!

Somebody on the blog mentioned that they’d seen an eBay auction starring a foolish man who bid on and won a bottle of “Monster Mojito Soda” — one of the new 2006 Halloween flavors from Jones Soda — for a hundred bucks. I too was watching that auction. It was just before the beverages made their official debut, and that eBay auction was really the only proof of their existence. The new sodas weren’t being talked about on drink forums, weren’t being advertised anywhere, and they didn’t even get a passing mention on Jones Soda’s own website. Still, just one day after this poor schmuck kissed a hundred dollars goodbye, I found all of the Jones Soda flavors at Target, including Monster Mojito — bought at under five bucks for a four-pack.

I know, I know. On eBay, “our bids are binding contracts.” Whatever. If I was that guy, I’d take the negative feedback and haul ass to Red Lobster with my Ben Franklin.

I love Jones Soda, and I’m very happy that they’re a part of this year’s Halloween festivities. They’ve brought back the mini-cans (including one new flavor, one rerun and two renamed reruns) along with three all-new glass bottled sodas that cost more, look awesome and help me feel frightening and fancy all at the same time. I’ve done gone and drinked them all, and now, the Countdown welcomes the 2006 Jones Soda Halloween Collection.

Also at Target, I came across these two “Haunted Hollow” party favors. They’re love and sweetness. I found ‘em in that weird crowded “dollar store” section Targets have, where it’s easy to get into fistfist-fights with women who firmly believe that you will try to swipe the pineapple-themed set of salad tongs that they clearly spotted first.

Not a whole lot of thought went into the names. On the left, it’s “Putty With Glow In The Dark Ghost.” On the right, we have “Putty With Glow In The Dark Skeleton.” I wouldn’t mind so much if these names translated to cool sounding acronyms, but they don’t. Then again, toys that break apart into equal parts slime and glow don’t need fiddy cent names.

The ghost’s ass pops off to reveal a very generous glob of neon yellow slime, while Sir Skeleton — a really cute figure that’s way detailed for something so tiny — dwells about in a coffin full of blue goo. (We can assume that colors vary in other packages.) The skeleton’s slime has a different consistency than the ghost’s — his is akin to chafing fuel, while the ghost’s is like a giant glob of vending machine slime. Which is better? Well, that’s all about taste, man.

Yay, first post! I haven’t seen much Halloween stuff in the stores yet, but I’ve been pretty busy lately. My new schedule means I only work Monday and Tuesday, so I sdhould be hitting the stores more as Halloween approaches.

$100 for a damn bottle of soda that is guaranteed to come out in the next month? That’s just regaddamdickulous.

Ghosted by Spoodles @ 09/11/2006 9:03 PM EDT

Remember when those Tickle Me Elmos were all the rage a few years ago? Well, the local news did an auction on one of them a week before Christmas and the winning bid was $500. The funny thing is, just like those sodas, you could easily find Elmo anywhere a week later for about $10.

Matt, hate to be the guy but you typed “Awesome Grape” for “Gruesome Grape”.

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/11/2006 9:10 PM EDT

Not according to what it says now I didn’t! ;)

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/11/2006 9:11 PM EDT

Awesome. These would have made some really cool ghostbuster toys in the 80’s.

Ghosted by Adam @ 09/11/2006 9:12 PM EDT

It’s a Halloween MIRACLE!

I tasted all of them last year but have only gotten into the GRUESOME GRAPE and BERRIED ALIVE this year. I too hate grape soda but I think it works in a tiny Halloween can.

Seriously, when is TARGET going to start cutting checks to X-E?? When it does, don’t forget the little people.

Went to BIG LOTS. They had a ton of stuff but the quality was…lacking. Yeah, yeah, they are discount but after the DOLLAR TREE posters, I thought maybe…

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/11/2006 9:18 PM EDT

Mmm… they all look so good. But I still can’t drink Jones Soda without thinking about the skeezy love letter incident. Bleh.

I’m trying to get in the Halloween spirit, but summer isn’t technically over yet so I think it may take me another week or two. Plus I spent like an hour today looking for a real old Nick-or-Treat ad I know I have here somewhere, and still can’t find the fucking thing. *grump*

Ive been reading the articles here for a while, and was looking for how to send an email to Matt, about a good spot for 70’s-80’s items, toys, movies etc…

any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance. b-

Darn it, I KNOW my sister said there’s a Target in this area. I’ve gotta call her and find out if it’s in biking distance. I think I’ve had Jones soda twice, and never the holiday flavors.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 09/11/2006 9:49 PM EDT

i have to say, thank you. i get to live the count down to halloween vicariously through your articles. they don’t understand halloween in the uk. a couple years back i went on this trip over halloween, and brought a bunch of candy. a) they think it is hiiiilarious when you say candy, cause apparently there are only sweets and chocolates, b) they all had never been trick or treating, c) they thought we were trying to poison them with the candy for some reason. it’s a bit depressing. i’m so happy i’ll be home by october!!! but til i will rely on all the product updates here.

Ghosted by platy @ 09/11/2006 9:57 PM EDT

hate to be that guy but spider cider is definitely a new one. it’s more apple cider than the caramel apple which tasted sort of like caramel mixed with jones sour apple soda.

Ghosted by mister pibb @ 09/11/2006 10:05 PM EDT

Oooohhh i gotta try that Mojito flavor frozen with some salt on the rim baybeh! Btw, my mom keeps insisting forever that one time back in the early 80’s halloween was almost canceled because of weird o’s putting razors and drug and shit in the candy…is that true? I rememebr that particular year she mentioned being only really allowed to certain neighbors and relatives houses, and businesses that offered treats.

Ghosted by mandy_Reeves @ 09/11/2006 10:07 PM EDT

I remember my mom wanting to check our candy for razors and drugs, but as far as actually cancelling Halloween? Don’t recall that one.

Matt,

I wanted to let you know there are some reasonably priced “God Like Moose Mugs” at this site:
http://www.melkmugs.com

Thanks!
Ron

Matt, I gotta disagree with you on the sodas. To me the candy corn tasted like inoffensive corn syrup, whereas the Spider Cider made me want to vomit. I think it kinda tastes like someone melted those caramel apple lollipops down and added carbonated water. Gross.

platy: The most fun thing in the world is introducing people to Halloween. I had an Australian friend come to visit last October and we threw a Halloween party. He had a great time, although he got a little sick on the candy, not having the American immunity to copious amounts of empty calories.

Ghosted by jazzy @ 09/11/2006 11:23 PM EDT

I’d rank the cans in this order: Berried Alive, Spider Cider, Gruesome Grape and Candy Corn. The bottles are all good.

I wasn’t so much a fan of Spider Cider as I was amazed that I just didn’t hate it. If people like apple juice, they’d probably dig this.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/11/2006 11:25 PM EDT

I’d have to say the halloween flavors are 10x better than the thanksgiving flavors. Who thought of a turkey flavored soda…..whoever he is, he is fired.

Ghosted by Mightystalfos @ 09/11/2006 11:29 PM EDT

Wow, I’ve never heard of This Soda…. At least not in this part of South Texas…. For some reason the Berried Alive is calling to me!

Ghosted by MJgrass @ 09/11/2006 11:37 PM EDT

Must…get…to…Target…and…get these sodas…so I can…stop… talking…like…William…Shatner.

If anyone remembers my personal review of the halloween cans last year, my ranking was: Scary Berry Lemonade, the Lime soda, Candy Corn, and Caramel Apple.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/11/2006 11:41 PM EDT

I missed out on the Halloween Jones Soda last year, and I’ll be damned if I’m gonna this year. I like to think they brought it back for those of us who wussed out, or something… :)

Ghosted by Ryane @ 09/11/2006 11:46 PM EDT

Damn you Canada! I want my Jones!!!!

And on a lighter note: poor ghost…losing his ectoplasmic drippings like that. That makes Egon SAD :(

Ghosted by RoadBlock is Way Too Tired @ 09/12/2006 12:08 AM EDT

I am so picking up the bottled trio. Always on the look for good mixers, and there’s not a lot that works with gin, so I might finally have a good reason to stock up on a novelty Jones.
Bridget, you haven’t lived until you’ve had the Fufuberry, IMHO anyway. The blue snowcone flavor is tasty too, but I forget what it’s called, and both the cream soda and green apple are worth trying as well.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/12/2006 12:33 AM EDT

Fine. I’ll buy ‘em tomorrow. I knew you and Target would make me do it. People look at you oddly when you buy that many holiday-themed sodas at one time. Thank God I’m used to it. Also…I have become addicted to Target’s Pitch Black Freeze, now with a Halloween-themed cup to put it in! I am SO ready to stock up on that Mountain Dew. For real.

Ghosted by EtHM @ 09/12/2006 1:11 AM EDT

Creepy Cranberry? With Gin!? That sounds so frighteningly tasty and fine witta twista lime. Yeah.
Seriously, I love cranberry anything second only to my love of Halloween anything. I had 3 orgasms when I saw Creepy Cranberry and since I love cranberries so much it hurt not a bit.
Target tomorrow morning to get CreEeEeEeEepy CraAaAaAanberry!

I thought you were too tough last year. Happy to see Jones get a fair shake now. I will be testing your Jones/alcohol mixes in the next couple days and report back!

Hey Matt! First time poster, long time reader. I’m as excited for Halloween as you are (although I have never heard of Jones Soda…). Maybe they only sell it out East or something?

Ghosted by Draca @ 09/12/2006 3:13 AM EDT

Okay I keep telling myself I’m going to go to Target.. then I look at my bank account and go naw.. I’ll go later.. and I never go. Well, my happy ass is makin a trip to Target sometime this week (after I get paid), and I’m getting some Jones Soda and plenty of other halloween goodies. I must buy halloween stuff.. I must. And I must throw a halloween party so I can try some Jones/alcohol mixes. And I must stop saying “must” so much.

Ghosted by Dj Lisas @ 09/12/2006 3:37 AM EDT

Looking at the vampire on the Mojito bottle made me realize that Jones really needs to have a Mad Matt image for its Halloween flavors!

Ghosted by Jotenks @ 09/12/2006 3:37 AM EDT

Another awesome article, Matt. The reviews were kickass, except for the “Lemon Dead Drop” soda, which I didn’t read because it was covered by that “Heroes” ad.

Ghosted by DocDragon @ 09/12/2006 6:07 AM EDT

I was so stalking Target for the last two weeks waiting patiently for the Halloween stuff to hit. It’s sad to say but I was standing right there on a work lunch break when the employees were restocking that $1 section and I was the first in the store to grab up the skeleton in the blue goo. I wish it came in other colors but it’s blue down here in GA too.

Ghosted by Smurfwreck @ 09/12/2006 6:26 AM EDT

Platy: Halloween in the UK does indeed suck. I was born and live here, but became eternally fascinated after seeing Halloween (the movie). For the past several years, I have laid on a Halloween bash. It has actually picked up momentum and we do regularly get a handful of TOT’ers. I always make sure I’ve got a loads of candy for them too. Not English stuff either…I put together a bag with tootsie pops, midges, dots, mini hershey bars etc. The kids love it.
Every year, I just wistfully read the Halloween Countdown and think “I want that”. There is a small corner of England that will always be black and orange throughout the Fall.

Ghosted by Scott @ 09/12/2006 7:33 AM EDT

Draca Jones is out of Seattle, and we have it here in the Midwest. I think it’s more the type of soda that you have to hunt for, it’s not sitting out on a huge pallet with Coke.
I totally remember that “making orange crayons” bit on PBS.
Not sure if I’m gonna buy the cans this year. I might do the bottles, if I can find them. I just know I’ll only be buying them for a sip out of each, and then they’ll sit in my fridge until Thanksgiving.
Thanks again Matt for entertaining us so through the season. It is much easier to get going in the morning, knowing that an article is waiting for me when I get to work.

Ghosted by kb @ 09/12/2006 7:43 AM EDT

I haven’t tasted the Jones this year yet, but I just have to this out there…I love candy corn. That is all.

Ghosted by Geoffinsanity @ 09/12/2006 7:51 AM EDT

I remember the crayon bit Matt’s talking about. The one where the little girl is drawing and she stares at her crayon and suddenly you see how crayons are made by the bajillions. Yeah. As a kid, it just made me really want to eat crayons.

I love slime and the slime smell that comes with it.

Ghosted by super_dex @ 09/12/2006 8:01 AM EDT

Damn! I was going to email you with pictures of the Skeleton and Ghost Goo(s) since I snagged them at Target yesterday. I also grabbed the Disjointed Head of the Black Cat that acts as a Stress Ball. And all of the Putty with the Glow in the Dark Skeleton packs were blue…

Mine is staring at me from in front of my monitor here at work, begging me to pop open the lid of his transparent coffin and free him from his blended blueberry hell!

Ghosted by IndieRochester @ 09/12/2006 8:02 AM EDT

Does anyone know where we in the Great White North can obtian Jones Soda or (Pop) as we call it! TARGET needs to hurry up and take over the Department Store Business in Canukistan!

Ghosted by Greg @ 09/12/2006 8:46 AM EDT

Greg — That’s a tough one. I’d suggest trying your local Zeller’s, if you have one, as the last time I was in one of those, they carried a lot of brands Target does. But they also carry a lot of brands does, so I don’t know how successful you’ll be. Good luck, you Canucklehead.

OMG! I was at Toys ‘R’ Us yesterday, and they have some SERIOUSLY AWESOME Halloween gear… Normally they stock only a bunch of halloween candy in huge bags, treat bags (the EXPENSIVE kind, ya know, for kids who are too good to use old pillowcases or used Wal*Mart bags) and a whole bunch of kiddie costumes… this year they have that AND MORE! I picked up a few AWESOME stretchy, plastic bean filled versions of the Universal Monsters (although these are knock offs, they are all actually VERY well done, and incredibly detailed, they are actually pretty big, too… about 8″) I picked up Dracula and The Creature From The Black Lagoon, although they had Frankenstein, The Mummy, and The Wolfman as well… and they were less than $2 a piece!!!! I also picked up a cute pumkin stress ball (they also had eyeball, spider, and ghost versions) and some really cool halloweenish props – a light up skull, a screaming eyeball, and a few others… Also, on the subject of things too cool not to mention I MET BRUCE CAMPBELL last night at a book signing!

We need to start harassing the good folks at Jones Soda Inc until they agree to release a limited edition pack of X-Entertainment soda flavors. We could have Peeps Soda, Giant Ape Juice Soda, Ecto Cooler Soda and, uh…Tim Robbins. Brilliant!

Ghosted by Jedoc @ 09/12/2006 9:19 AM EDT

Matt,

That’s an awesome graffic of the old Castle Dracula billboard. That thing would scare the crap out of me as a kid… i didn’t want to know what he was pointing at.

I little trivia- I found out recently that the green guy is none other than Crazy Eddie from the Iron Madien album covers.

Ghosted by Lou @ 09/12/2006 10:01 AM EDT

Did you mean Tim Curry flavor, Jedoc? Although, Matt did mention a Tim Robbins costume in one of the previous Halloween Countdowns. About how you wouldn’t want to model a costume after his Anti-Trust character.

That makes me want to say two things: Bill Gates = Megalomaniac and Anti-Trust is my vote for Rachael’s worst movie.

That is all :)

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/12/2006 10:05 AM EDT

Greg- I am a fellow Canuck, and maybe I can help. I know this sounds weird, but they sell Jones Soda at that clothing store, Bluenotes. It’s a men’s and women’s clothing store specializing in jeans. If you have one near you, check it out, because they usually have a Jones Soda cooler- but you have to buy the bottles indicidually. Good luck! I am off to get some myself…my friend’s birthday is on HALLOWEEN so we may have to include these sodas in our bar menu…

Ghosted by Muppet Baby @ 09/12/2006 10:36 AM EDT

I am going to blame my head cold/blurred vision for the misspelling of ‘individually’ in my last post. :)

Ghosted by Muppet Baby @ 09/12/2006 10:37 AM EDT

Hey! Fellow Canadian here too! Thank god Bluenotes has jones, otherwise id have to drive all the way to the US. And that’s not exactly close from Toronto area. Muppet Baby, do you know if its every bluenotes or perhaps just some of their larger stores?

Ghosted by Nickelodeon @ 09/12/2006 11:04 AM EDT

Greg, and all other Canadians, I have also seen them sell Jones Soda at Bootlegger clothing store, so you can try there too.
I am very excited cause in about 2 hours or so, I’m going to the US to go to Target!! I don’t think I’ll be getting any Jones Soda, but I will be looking for Halloween stuff. I’m also going to Michaels too, I hoping I can find some of the stick on the window blood that they had last year. I bought some last year, but they only had one pack, so I did’nt have enough to fill the window all the way across.

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 09/12/2006 12:09 PM EDT

Call me odd, but what would all those taste like all poured together in a Jones’ HalllowSoda Suicide Punch? Like tampered candy without the metal and poison?

Bought a cheap-ass Freddy glove last night. Going to add the trimmed Pringles lids this weekend to convert it to a pizza slicer from Hell. Last item for completion of the “Pizza Kruger” costume is a blank baseball/trucker cap. Should I fabric-paint “Freddy’s” or “Kruger’s” on it? What sounds more like a good name for an Elm Street pizza joint? “Elm St. Pizza?”
