09/03/2006: Find The Treasure!

We had a blackout most of yesterday which, to be honest, turned out to be a welcome one. It sucked during the day, but by night, it was interesting to see the neighborhood pitch black and pretend that we needed to be prepared for cannibal looters. Once that got old, we skipped to a town with power, got hammered at a Japanese restaurant, and came home to find that we had electricity but no desire or coherence left to actually use it. I could use a day like that once a month.

Archie Bunkers Grandson???? Wuh? Amazing picture there.

Ghosted by kb @ 09/03/2006 5:59 PM EDT

I CANNOT find Four-Armed Frank. It’s driving me nuts. I love this game!

Ghosted by Carri @ 09/03/2006 6:00 PM EDT

kb: Archie Bunker’s Grandson was featured in this article.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/03/2006 6:02 PM EDT

I tried to play the game but I kept getting distracted by Glo Balls. Halloween ‘03 was great…

Ghosted by Katherine @ 09/03/2006 6:06 PM EDT

Hey, there’s one of those garbage bag toys that you had to drop in water to reveal the figure inside! Used to get those at Dollar Tree!!

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/03/2006 6:07 PM EDT

I can’t fucking believe I never bought those Glo Balls that year. They looked so gross at the time but now I’d almost kill for a box, just to say I’ve tried them. :(

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 09/03/2006 6:11 PM EDT

Hint: use the magnifier to get the microscopic things in the picture (pinhead, four armed frank etc.) if Matt doesn’t consider that cheating. It seems like that is the only way to find some things. Does this remind anyone of highlights magazine or is it just me?

Ghosted by Goob @ 09/03/2006 6:24 PM EDT

I found everything, had trouble with the Hulk hands.Anyone been to Party City lately? They’ve got most of their Halloween stuff out.

Ghosted by sonny @ 09/03/2006 6:26 PM EDT

I found them all too. Four armed Frank was tough though. I’m in awe of the wall o stuff!

Ghosted by Teriyakibroth @ 09/03/2006 6:35 PM EDT

Thanks for that link Matt. Somehow I missed that article, and any knowledge of that doll’s existance.

Ghosted by kb @ 09/03/2006 6:56 PM EDT

I found most of the stuff, I’m too ADD to find them all! Very awesome stuff. I need to have a space in my house with kick ass junk!

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 09/03/2006 6:59 PM EDT

Archie Bunker’s grandson being in there is a little startling. And what is that next to the Pokemon pasta (which, by the way, they have TONS of cans in a dollar store by me)?

Ghosted by Denise @ 09/03/2006 7:36 PM EDT

I’m fond of the Wind Waker Link figure…

Ghosted by kyle @ 09/03/2006 7:37 PM EDT

Matt, that picture is awesome. Looks a bit too much like my room! Damn EBAY!! As a long time reader, it’s cool to see where the stuff in your articles find a home. Keep up the great work on the site and your eclectic collection.

Morning Funnies cereal was awesome.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 09/03/2006 7:46 PM EDT

Kid Nicky got me again. I was going to say, “The real story here is MORNING FUNNIES cereal with their phenomenal jingle” but instead I will just say, “Clam Chowdah!”

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/03/2006 7:48 PM EDT

That picture is a pretty good representation of everything X-E stands for. That’s awesome.

Ghosted by jazzy @ 09/03/2006 7:48 PM EDT

Overwhelming.

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 09/03/2006 7:50 PM EDT

Forgive the double post but I also wanted to mention that went out to OLD NAVY today and they had some good Halloween stuff out.

On an unrelated topic, I referenced the Fry Guys the other day in class and my students had no knowledge of McDonaldland. So, I am working on a PowerPoint to correct that problem. What (other than character profiles, commericals, and the HR Pufnstuf lawsuit) should I include?

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/03/2006 7:51 PM EDT

This is amazingly cool. I’d like to go through and link to every article that features stuff in the picture, but I have to be back at work Tuesday :D . Guess I’ll just reread the four cool dolls article.

Found only the Vintage SW Bossk. Damn crappy eyes o’ mine. BTW Matt, what’s that Star Wars box on top of the Chia Pet?

Ghosted by Reid @ 09/03/2006 8:04 PM EDT

Oh what the hell. Here’s a few:
C-3P0s Star Wars Cereal Review, The Ultimate C-3P0’s Cereal Tribute
Charmies
Shrek Popcorn
Dinosaurs Attack!

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/03/2006 8:15 PM EDT

Manimal McDonaldland cookies, of course!

Ghosted by Mystie @ 09/03/2006 8:17 PM EDT

ho-lee shit.
thats all i can say right now.
you should charge admission to come into your place and just look around.
i’d pay.

Ghosted by brianfax @ 09/03/2006 8:27 PM EDT

Nice!

On the Halloween stuff, went to two Targets and a Walmart……nothing.

Any luck with the peanuts and candy corn?

Ghosted by Fox @ 09/03/2006 8:35 PM EDT

Off TOpic….Lucky Louie on HBO is VERY raunchy….they are saying God is a c*nt. OMG….i’m not a prude for crying out loud…but still!

Ghosted by mandy_Reeves @ 09/03/2006 8:46 PM EDT

Seeing all of those old toys reminded me of an obscure toy from the early 90s. Does anyone remember “The Trash Bag Bunch”? They were cheap plastic figures that were packaged inside biodegradeable bags that looked like trash bags. You dropped the bag in water and it would dissolve. I got a few repeats but almost got the entire collection.

Ghosted by mudogramx @ 09/03/2006 8:46 PM EDT

Trash Bag Bunch, Trash Bag Bunch…. shit… now I have this weird deja vois feeling like I just saw something from Trash Bag Bunch or like, bought something from it….

Ghosted by Mystie @ 09/03/2006 9:15 PM EDT

What DID happen to McDonaldland anyway? My friends in High School and I discussed Mayor McCheese killing off the other denizens of McDonaldland in a Haamburgery slaughter. Also killed: Hamburglar, Fry Guys and that cop. Why don’t they use the rest of the characters anyway?

Ghosted by Terror Claws Cole @ 09/03/2006 9:22 PM EDT

I guess the marketing gurus think that kids today are too sophisticated for McDonaldland. I did see The Professor and Capt. Crook in a McDonald’s in Paris 3 years ago…
Mystie, I got the cookies covered. :)

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/03/2006 9:25 PM EDT

Yeah, there’s totally a Trash Bag Bunch guy in the pic. Like I mentioned earlier, but not by name. Thank you for the name, Mudogramx.

Left hand side of the box of Morning Funnies on the left.

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/03/2006 9:27 PM EDT

I’ve only found Bossk and the Pokemon Pasta so far.

I thought my best friend was a packrat. This makes me proud to be a Collector of Random Stuff. My mom always yelled at me about all the shit I’d bring home, but I can’t help it. I’m not only a packrat, but a thrift shop/flea market addict who is also re-discovering eBay after trying to stay away from it for a few years. Most of the reason I volunteer at a thrift shop involves getting first dibs on all the awesome stuff that people donate. (And the manager says she has a hard time finding people to go through it all. That’s the best part!)

Ghosted by starwenn @ 09/03/2006 9:34 PM EDT

Working at a thrift shop was how I got my boxed complete Magnavox Odessey 2. When I say “complete” I mean right down to the packing styrofoam, rubber bands, warranty card, the whole deal. 10 bucks.

Domino’s had better start offering Fudgems figurines or plushes for a limited time offer. They don’t have to be free,I would definately pay.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 09/03/2006 9:43 PM EDT

I still can’t find the Trash Bag Bunch figure; maybe I’m going blind… I can’t believe Matt didn’t mention Miss Kim or whatever name was. She’s just sitting there by 4-armed frank, crying because no one remembers her…

Ghosted by Darth Poop @ 09/03/2006 9:46 PM EDT

I hate you Matt, your room looks 300x geekier than mine!

The reason that McDonaldland is no more here is that Sid & Marty Krofft successfully sued McDonalds that McDLand was too much like H.R. Pufnstuf and most of the early characters like Capt Crook, Professor, Big Mac, and yes, Mayor MacCheese (because he was indeed a ripoff of Pufnstuf), were phased out. I bet there are still McDs out there where the people were too lazy/cheap to change their Playplaces to update it (one near my cousin’s house in Center Moriches had the old characters well into the late 90s, don’t know if they’re still there)

But question: What is that gray-headed robot? I have no clue and must know!

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/03/2006 9:52 PM EDT

Wait, is the figure still in the bag? I think I see a micro machine r2-d2 playset.

Ghosted by Darth Poop @ 09/03/2006 9:52 PM EDT

Norbert — Which gray-headed robot? :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/03/2006 9:56 PM EDT

I believe he is speaking of the one next to Kamala’s (sp) figure.

Ghosted by Darth Poop @ 09/03/2006 9:59 PM EDT

That’s Verbot! I love Verbot! He was the baby brother of the far larger and more impressive Omnibot. Such a great toy.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/03/2006 10:00 PM EDT

Knegative, I got those at the Dollar Tree too. Sorry I didn’t read your post earlier. I did a little research and it turns out those things were released around the time the Save the Earth campaign was really popular, ie Captain Planet and recycled paper. Ahh, the 90s.

Ghosted by mudogramx @ 09/03/2006 10:13 PM EDT

Ah, thanks, Matt, but this is probably the first time in X-E’s history that I still don’t know what that is! It kind of seems familiar, and I probably had some kind of robot like it, but sadly, it doesn’t ring a bell :(

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/03/2006 10:16 PM EDT

Wow I remember seeing commercials for Verbot as a kid! But sadly I can’t remember what exactly Verbot did. Some kind of educational toy I think, but I can’t remember for sure.

Ghosted by jazzy @ 09/03/2006 10:22 PM EDT

Not so much an educational toy as it was just…a robot! It had a radio controller that, aside from making it move and pick up stuff, let the owner interact with it and make it do crazy things via voice control. I never mastered the voice control aspect, but just being able to make a robot roll into our sleeping dog turned Verbot into a childhood hero.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/03/2006 10:32 PM EDT

Matt, as hard as I have tried, my wall will never look like that. I am jealous of you.

On a sad note, my Grim Rapper has stopped working.

Ghosted by ctugirl @ 09/03/2006 10:44 PM EDT

I’ve tried to post 3 times now, but no dice. I don’t know if it’s b/c I’m trying to include several links or what…I had links to C-3P0’s, Charmies, Shrek Popcorn and Dinosaurs Attack!, but I cannot share them. :( Oh well, you guys can just do a site search yourselves. :)

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/03/2006 10:47 PM EDT

Holy Crap man!

Your room looks like mine, Except your stuff has some value and worth?

quick question, What does the box contain thats behind the fuzzy catapiller? it’s ontop if the stack that contains Archie Bunkers grandson and the Tower of pasta cans and behind the Chia Pet.

You have no idea how happy i was to be able to type that last sentence.

Ghosted by Jester @ 09/03/2006 10:48 PM EDT

That second sentence wasn’t a question, it was a statement, so I should have ended it with a . instead of a ?

Ghosted by Jester @ 09/03/2006 10:49 PM EDT

Squee, it went into a mod queue because of the links, but I approved it and it should be up there. :)
