Roseanne’s Halloween DVD YES YES!

I think I've found the greatest DVD in history, and I am absolutely serious. Then again, I thought the same thing last year when The He-Man & She-Ra Christmas special came out. And then even just a short while back when The Wizard nailed a release. Still, this may top 'em all:

Awwww fuck yeah, a DVD containing each and every Halloween episode of Roseanne. Now, I love the show, but I realize that this is not an opinion shared universally. Between off-screen antics and a final season that can be held accountable for at least forty suicide cases, I understand that Roseanne is an object of polarization among would-be critics. On the other hand, nobody could argue that the show wasn't the very best sitcom in history as far as Halloween episodes went. From Darlene sprouting a fleshy alien through her belly to Dan dressing as a kind of Jason/Leatherface hybrid, all seven Roseyweens are here, and the star even provides audio commentary as a bonus feature.

I'll hold off on a more in-depth look until the Halloween Countdown rolls around, but just know that the DVD is out now and dirt cheap. It's easy to spot, too, since few other DVD boxes feature anything that looks like a pumpkin with Roseanne's face carved into it.

I wasn't expecting to post twice today, so let's consider today's earlier post the Saturday Day Thread, and this one the Saturday Night Thread. Even though I'm posting this in the afternoon. Yeah.

Oh my god I wish they would do that with Home Improvement.

Roseanne Halloween specials are awesome, right up there with some of the greats in sitcom history. Her’s were always the most “hardcore” and with the best parents scareing the poop out of their kids, because you know what, scaring children is freakin’ hillarious.

Chestnuts roasted by Fox @ 09/02/2006 4:37 PM

I was never allowed to watch Roseanne, but that will not stop me from picking up that DVD if I see it cheap.
Mystie, your poor kitty! You could always console it by showing it pictures from the “Cute or Sad?” category of Cute Overload. Though there are no animals with cones on their heads, the one at the top is a kitten being bitten by a baby. Should lift your cat’s spirits?

Kitten being bitten. Kitten being bitten.

Yeah, I always liked Roseanne. John Goodman’s a genius.

Now this is the DVD publishers knowing their audience, right here. The Halloween episodes of Roseanne were always events to look forward to; not as fantastic as the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes, but always new and different, and always showcasing a playfulness that no other sitcom seemed to have; in a world that was otherwise so cynical, Roseanne found legitimate joy in Halloween and wasn’t afraid to share it. It even became an important plot point when she was giving birth to the baby, Jerry, and retreated to her ‘happy spot’– Halloween memories.

I’m running out and buying this, yo.

I loved Roseanne when it was originally on. I didn’t even mind the last season (although the final episode had a sucky “twist” ending). Although like most shows I used to watch, for some reason I just don’t catch the reruns.

Speaking of great DVD’s. I’ve been REALLY enjoying those “Masters of Horror” DVD’s that originally aired on Showtime. You can usually get them for about $10 at Target, but I’ve been going to used DVD places and getting them even cheaper. Today I went to the Half-Price Bookstore and found two I didn’t have yet. For even cheaper than usual because of their 20% Labor Day Sale.

I like Roseanne, but nothing tops the Treehouse of Horror Simpson specials. :)

I wasn’t thinking “animated” when I said “best sitcom,” but that doesn’t get me off the hook, so yeah, go Simpsons. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 09/02/2006 5:05 PM

If the simpson’s had ended about 9 seasons ago, I’d say they were in fact hallochamps. Now we’re lucky to get one good skit per tree house of horror.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 09/02/2006 5:06 PM

And I totally started typing that before it was mentioned.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 09/02/2006 5:07 PM

Oh man! The top 3 sitcoms that had awesome Halloween episodes has gotta be Rosanne, Home Improvement and The Simpsons!

This is an aweseome DVD, I so gotta get it!

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 09/02/2006 5:18 PM

I braved Target AND Walmart. Not a Hallothingee in sight! I even asked them, pretty rudely, when they were gonna get their stuff up. This is ludicrous. Hello, this stuff should have been up weeks ago!!!

I had to settle for finally getting Say Anything…Is a Real Boy. What I’ve heard so far is pretty awesome!!! And no it’s not the greatest movie of all time, its a band apparently named after the greatest movie of all time, but I could be wrong about that. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 09/02/2006 6:00 PM

What was the whole deal with that shows ending and it being a dream or something?

Chestnuts roasted by NightJay @ 09/02/2006 6:08 PM

I checked the main page and see the new stickers, so mystery solved :D
Did a quick run to Target, hoping to walk out with nothing more than a box of cereal, but all the red dot merchandise was 75% off (!) so I had to pick up a couple of “Tiki Bar” pineapple glasses for $0.50. Obviously they’re clearing off the shelves for the good stuff to come. Didn’t see the monster puppet guys though.
NightJay, here’s the Wiki info about the series finale. Good luck making sense of it, because it didn’t. Make sense, that is.
I didn’t remember that Jackie’s name was Marjorie! Now I’m going to be trying to figure out the connection between characters named Marjorie and great Halloween eps.

Looking forward to the Halloween Countdown this year. Already been playing the streaming songlist. Sucks about no Pitch Black III this year.

Chestnuts roasted by Rev @ 09/02/2006 6:23 PM

FINNAALLYY….someone who understands the genius that was the roseanne show. Awesome writing, great(actors)characters…and the Halloween shows…lets just say, it wouldn’t be Halloween with out them. Thank you Matt…you have a fan for life. Oh, DUN-TA- STILL 59 DAYS TILL HALLOWEEN. re:halloween 3.

Guess what? I’m back, bitch!

I’ve got some catching up to do:

-I tried Pepsi Jazz, the Strawberry & Creme soda’s pretty good, and I still have no idea why it’s only in diet.

-It seems we had The Grimace discussion again. I’ll add this: Nothing Can Kill The Grimace.

-Awesome DVD finds!

-I did my Targeting on Thursday, didn’t find anything as awesome.

-I see we have our Boos and we are Ghosting again.

-I agree that both Ghostbusters 2 & Gremlins 2 got bad raps, but both beeing ok movies. I’d like to throw in another one for this: Big Top Pee-wee, which I saw last friday night. If you don’t include Pee-wee’s Big Adventure & Pee-wee’s Playhouse and just watch this movie on its own, it’s a pretty fun movie, another Pee-wee adventure, the Hot Dog Tree, and the first appearance of Benecio Del Toro (as Duke the dog-faced man)

-Speaking of PW Playhouse, that colorform set is awesome! They manage to include the Cowntess, the original King of Cartoons AND Roger, but no Mrs. Renee? And I just checked, and there’s no Jambi either! Nor Chairry! (Globey’s there, he’s behind Cowntess) The colorforms sets I had were a TMNT one and a Commander Hoek & Cadet Stimpy set from R&S.

And I posted my vacation trip report on my myspace blog (my profile itself can be gotten my clicking my name), but I want this post to be really long, so here it is:

I just got back from a 9 day vacation in Upstate NY, so in lieu of telling everyone I know the story multiple times, I’ll just post it all here and you can read this!

Ok, Friday: Spent traveling up there, and I was apparantly sick from a bug or possibly some mild food poisoning. Ugh. Not a good way to start. That night, I went to a free concert in the park there and saw a man that might possible be the ugliest person on the face of the planet. It sucks that I didn’t have my camera or else you all would be creeped out by a man I could easily describe as resembling Gollum wearing a Yankees jacket.

Saturday: Spent the day recovering, not much to say here.

Sunday: Went to Lake Placid for a few hours, still nothing much happened today. Oh, I ate at one of the last Howard Johnson’s eateries in existence. I was all for saving them ’til I went to eat there for the first time in a few years. Burn it down, I don’t fucking care anymore.

Monday: Spent the day in Burlington, Vermont. 3 words: Total. Hippie. Town. The whole place is full of tall, smelly hippies (U of Vermont being in session didn’t hurt their numbers either), and dozens of Hemp shops (real store there called “The Hempest,” and yes, it sold rope). I DID have my camera and took a pic of a hippie car covered with hippie bumber stickers on all sides, but I don’t have it up yet.

Tuesday: Went to Lake George where I spent the rest of my vacation. I met my 2 close internet friends: Suz & Tanya and we walked around town for the night, and I’m not saying anything more than that.

Wednesday: Went to Saratoga’s Racetrack during the day and played “Find The Black People At The Racetrack” (I lost Q to 5), and went to the Casino at night (came home $40 richer)

Thursday: Strolled around Saratoga Springs for a few hours during the day (good-looking town), and I walked around the Aviation Mall in Queensbury at night, one of the crappiest malls ever. You know a mall sucks when some of the main stores they advertise having include a Bon-Ton and a Friendlys that’s not actually attached to the mall. But the movie theater there was a college movie geek’s wet dream: Beerfest, Talladega Nights, Accepted and Snakes On A Plane were all playing at the same theater.

Friday (yesterday): Possibly one of the best days on my vacation. I went to the Great Escape (the amusement park in the Lake George Area). Like a true coaster geek, here is a geekish Trip Report:

Coasters ridden:

Boomerang: 2, Steamin’ Deamon: 1, Apline Bobsleds: 1, Comet: 12!! Like last year, I was there early enough (around 11:15) so that I was able to get 12 consecutive rides, once in each row, in about an hour and a half. Still doesn’t beat my record last year of doing that in an hour. Then again, I went at the end of July last year and 2 trains were running last year. The Roadrunner Express was too short for me and the Nightmare was closed, and I heard that it’s going to be moved/dismantled after this year.

Stuff Closed: Nightmare, Cinderella’s Coach (Cinderella herself was there, but the coach wasnt running), the Rainbow, Lumberjack Splash & Paul Bunyan’s Bucket Brigade in Splashwater Kingdom, but I’m assuming that the ones other than Nightmare was due to lack of staffing (I was told by a security Bobby that the SK rides were closed due to the lifeguards going back to college). And I found out that another classic ride is gone: The Old 99 Trains. It must’ve been taken out earlier this year, because it’s still in the guidemaps.

I left around 4:15, after the Crappiest Parade Ever, which consisted of: A balloon/plane car driven by an old Fat man, the “Family of The Day”, some Looney Tunes characters (with Sylvester in Marshall Wild Bill McKay’s seat on his float, Bill wasn’t performing today), Cinderella, The Flash (the only JL character still walking around), and the Blues Brothers (they have their own show this year) on their own float at the end. And that’s it. This little kid sitting next to me said “That’s the parade?” and his mom told him “This is only the Great Escape, hunny.” to which I said “This aint Great Adventure, kid.” True Story. Once again, I didn’t have a camera handy for all this.

After all this, I ate at a Chinese Buffet beyond the park, and found a Wal-Mart, an Outback, and a Drive-in Theater (which was playing Talladega Nights, WTC, Invincible & Accepted)

And finally we come to Today: Nothing really spectacular, just driving home and finding LI being battered by what’s left of Ernesto. Now I’m here catching up for lost time on the internet and typing the blog you’re reading now.

An ex-girlfriend turned me on to Rosanne, and I’ve not been the same since. This is definitely something I’ll have to look for when I’m out Hallow-”pre”-ning next week.

And yeah, that finale was one of the worst ever. Except for the last episode of “Clarissa Explains it All,” when Sam raped Clarissa after murdering Ferguson. Wait, what?

Chestnuts roasted by Kyle @ 09/02/2006 6:56 PM

Not that I enjoy Roseanne or plan to watch it but because the series finale was mentioned I feel I should mention it’s going to be on the Oxygen channel in about 3 minutes.

So, this weekend is 80′s weekend on Encore! freakin’ awesome, and in Halloween news, Encore! HBO and Cinemax have given me: Ghostbusters, Gremlins 2, and Beetlejuice in the past week. So worth the extra cash, now I’m ready to get my bite sized snickers and eat candy corn and peanuts.

Which brings me to this: Does anyone else ever mix Candy Corn and Peanuts in a big bowl to sit out? If you havn’t; DO IT! It’s a tradition round here and it’s amazing, I promise.

Looks like I wasn’t the only one burned by TARGET. After getting all fired up about going, there was nothing Halloweeny out. I asked and the associate was very helpful. The Halloween stuff is in the building but not on display yet. :(

I, like Jessica Marie, was not allowed to watch Roseanne and, to be honest, that fact doesn’t bother me. I love John Goodman but I don’t really have any interest in catching up on that show.

Speaking of the TREEHOUSE OF HORROR, I am always surprised at the lack of Simpsons content on here. I know it’s not my place; it’s Matt’s house and he can do what he wants. However, as many Simpsonian references are dropped on here, I am a little befuttled.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 09/02/2006 7:22 PM

I love Roseanne, including the final season.
Manimal,I would assume the reason there’s no Simpsons on X-E is because there’s SO MUCH Simpsons related stuff online. What’s the point of adding to it?
And on that note, fuck people who jump on the “Simpsons sucks now” nerd bandwagon. The Simpsons is T.V.’s funniest show,to this day. Every now and then there’s a not so funny episode, but overall they’re hillarious.

Chestnuts roasted by Kid Nicky @ 09/02/2006 7:30 PM

Right on Nicky!

I also forgot to add that I haven’t seen the new Swedish Marine Life, and the Swedish Fish themselves were a staple of my frat’s weekly Wednesday Night house parties over the summer.

Oh godddddd. Is the one where she kills everyone and sings in there? That’s the BEST.
