09/02/2006: Roseanne’s Halloween DVD YES YES!

I think I’ve found the greatest DVD in history, and I am absolutely serious. Then again, I thought the same thing last year when The He-Man & She-Ra Christmas special came out. And then even just a short while back when The Wizard nailed a release. Still, this may top ‘em all:

Awwww fuck yeah, a DVD containing each and every Halloween episode of Roseanne. Now, I love the show, but I realize that this is not an opinion shared universally. Between off-screen antics and a final season that can be held accountable for at least forty suicide cases, I understand that Roseanne is an object of polarization among would-be critics. On the other hand, nobody could argue that the show wasn’t the very best sitcom in history as far as Halloween episodes went. From Darlene sprouting a fleshy alien through her belly to Dan dressing as a kind of Jason/Leatherface hybrid, all seven Roseyweens are here, and the star even provides audio commentary as a bonus feature.

I’ll hold off on a more in-depth look until the Halloween Countdown rolls around, but just know that the DVD is out now and dirt cheap. It’s easy to spot, too, since few other DVD boxes feature anything that looks like a pumpkin with Roseanne’s face carved into it.

I wasn’t expecting to post twice today, so let’s consider today’s earlier post the Saturday Day Thread, and this one the Saturday Night Thread. Even though I’m posting this in the afternoon. Yeah.

Happy HalloFIRST YO!

Oh my god I wish they would do that with Home Improvement.

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 09/02/2006 4:37 PM EDT

Roseanne Halloween specials are awesome, right up there with some of the greats in sitcom history. Her’s were always the most “hardcore” and with the best parents scareing the poop out of their kids, because you know what, scaring children is freakin’ hillarious.

Ghosted by Fox @ 09/02/2006 4:37 PM EDT

I was never allowed to watch Roseanne, but that will not stop me from picking up that DVD if I see it cheap.
Mystie, your poor kitty! You could always console it by showing it pictures from the “Cute or Sad?” category of Cute Overload. Though there are no animals with cones on their heads, the one at the top is a kitten being bitten by a baby. Should lift your cat’s spirits?

Kitten being bitten. Kitten being bitten.

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 09/02/2006 4:44 PM EDT

Yeah, I always liked Roseanne. John Goodman’s a genius.

Ghosted by Rocky @ 09/02/2006 4:49 PM EDT

Now this is the DVD publishers knowing their audience, right here. The Halloween episodes of Roseanne were always events to look forward to; not as fantastic as the Simpsons Treehouse of Horror episodes, but always new and different, and always showcasing a playfulness that no other sitcom seemed to have; in a world that was otherwise so cynical, Roseanne found legitimate joy in Halloween and wasn’t afraid to share it. It even became an important plot point when she was giving birth to the baby, Jerry, and retreated to her ‘happy spot’– Halloween memories.

I’m running out and buying this, yo.

Ghosted by G\'Tron @ 09/02/2006 4:58 PM EDT

I loved Roseanne when it was originally on. I didn’t even mind the last season (although the final episode had a sucky “twist” ending). Although like most shows I used to watch, for some reason I just don’t catch the reruns.

Speaking of great DVD’s. I’ve been REALLY enjoying those “Masters of Horror” DVD’s that originally aired on Showtime. You can usually get them for about $10 at Target, but I’ve been going to used DVD places and getting them even cheaper. Today I went to the Half-Price Bookstore and found two I didn’t have yet. For even cheaper than usual because of their 20% Labor Day Sale.

I like Roseanne, but nothing tops the Treehouse of Horror Simpson specials. :)

Ghosted by 9LINE via PSP @ 09/02/2006 5:03 PM EDT

I wasn’t thinking “animated” when I said “best sitcom,” but that doesn’t get me off the hook, so yeah, go Simpsons. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/02/2006 5:05 PM EDT

If the simpson’s had ended about 9 seasons ago, I’d say they were in fact hallochamps. Now we’re lucky to get one good skit per tree house of horror.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 09/02/2006 5:06 PM EDT

And I totally started typing that before it was mentioned.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 09/02/2006 5:07 PM EDT

Oh man! The top 3 sitcoms that had awesome Halloween episodes has gotta be Rosanne, Home Improvement and The Simpsons!

This is an aweseome DVD, I so gotta get it!

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 09/02/2006 5:18 PM EDT

I braved Target AND Walmart. Not a Hallothingee in sight! I even asked them, pretty rudely, when they were gonna get their stuff up. This is ludicrous. Hello, this stuff should have been up weeks ago!!!

I had to settle for finally getting Say Anything…Is a Real Boy. What I’ve heard so far is pretty awesome!!! And no it’s not the greatest movie of all time, its a band apparently named after the greatest movie of all time, but I could be wrong about that. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Ghosted by Knegative @ 09/02/2006 6:00 PM EDT

What was the whole deal with that shows ending and it being a dream or something?

Ghosted by NightJay @ 09/02/2006 6:08 PM EDT

I checked the main page and see the new stickers, so mystery solved :D
Did a quick run to Target, hoping to walk out with nothing more than a box of cereal, but all the red dot merchandise was 75% off (!) so I had to pick up a couple of “Tiki Bar” pineapple glasses for $0.50. Obviously they’re clearing off the shelves for the good stuff to come. Didn’t see the monster puppet guys though.
NightJay, here’s the Wiki info about the series finale. Good luck making sense of it, because it didn’t. Make sense, that is.
I didn’t remember that Jackie’s name was Marjorie! Now I’m going to be trying to figure out the connection between characters named Marjorie and great Halloween eps.

Looking forward to the Halloween Countdown this year. Already been playing the streaming songlist. Sucks about no Pitch Black III this year.

Ghosted by Rev @ 09/02/2006 6:23 PM EDT

FINNAALLYY….someone who understands the genius that was the roseanne show. Awesome writing, great(actors)characters…and the Halloween shows…lets just say, it wouldn’t be Halloween with out them. Thank you Matt…you have a fan for life. Oh, DUN-TA- STILL 59 DAYS TILL HALLOWEEN. re:halloween 3.

Guess what? I’m back, bitch!

I’ve got some catching up to do:

-I tried Pepsi Jazz, the Strawberry & Creme soda’s pretty good, and I still have no idea why it’s only in diet.

-It seems we had The Grimace discussion again. I’ll add this: Nothing Can Kill The Grimace.

-Awesome DVD finds!

-I did my Targeting on Thursday, didn’t find anything as awesome.

-I see we have our Boos and we are Ghosting again.

-I agree that both Ghostbusters 2 & Gremlins 2 got bad raps, but both beeing ok movies. I’d like to throw in another one for this: Big Top Pee-wee, which I saw last friday night. If you don’t include Pee-wee’s Big Adventure & Pee-wee’s Playhouse and just watch this movie on its own, it’s a pretty fun movie, another Pee-wee adventure, the Hot Dog Tree, and the first appearance of Benecio Del Toro (as Duke the dog-faced man)

-Speaking of PW Playhouse, that colorform set is awesome! They manage to include the Cowntess, the original King of Cartoons AND Roger, but no Mrs. Renee? And I just checked, and there’s no Jambi either! Nor Chairry! (Globey’s there, he’s behind Cowntess) The colorforms sets I had were a TMNT one and a Commander Hoek & Cadet Stimpy set from R&S.

And I posted my vacation trip report on my myspace blog (my profile itself can be gotten my clicking my name), but I want this post to be really long, so here it is:

I just got back from a 9 day vacation in Upstate NY, so in lieu of telling everyone I know the story multiple times, I’ll just post it all here and you can read this!

Ok, Friday: Spent traveling up there, and I was apparantly sick from a bug or possibly some mild food poisoning. Ugh. Not a good way to start. That night, I went to a free concert in the park there and saw a man that might possible be the ugliest person on the face of the planet. It sucks that I didn’t have my camera or else you all would be creeped out by a man I could easily describe as resembling Gollum wearing a Yankees jacket.

Saturday: Spent the day recovering, not much to say here.

Sunday: Went to Lake Placid for a few hours, still nothing much happened today. Oh, I ate at one of the last Howard Johnson’s eateries in existence. I was all for saving them ’til I went to eat there for the first time in a few years. Burn it down, I don’t fucking care anymore.

Monday: Spent the day in Burlington, Vermont. 3 words: Total. Hippie. Town. The whole place is full of tall, smelly hippies (U of Vermont being in session didn’t hurt their numbers either), and dozens of Hemp shops (real store there called “The Hempest,” and yes, it sold rope). I DID have my camera and took a pic of a hippie car covered with hippie bumber stickers on all sides, but I don’t have it up yet.

Tuesday: Went to Lake George where I spent the rest of my vacation. I met my 2 close internet friends: Suz & Tanya and we walked around town for the night, and I’m not saying anything more than that.

Wednesday: Went to Saratoga’s Racetrack during the day and played “Find The Black People At The Racetrack” (I lost Q to 5), and went to the Casino at night (came home $40 richer)

Thursday: Strolled around Saratoga Springs for a few hours during the day (good-looking town), and I walked around the Aviation Mall in Queensbury at night, one of the crappiest malls ever. You know a mall sucks when some of the main stores they advertise having include a Bon-Ton and a Friendlys that’s not actually attached to the mall. But the movie theater there was a college movie geek’s wet dream: Beerfest, Talladega Nights, Accepted and Snakes On A Plane were all playing at the same theater.

Friday (yesterday): Possibly one of the best days on my vacation. I went to the Great Escape (the amusement park in the Lake George Area). Like a true coaster geek, here is a geekish Trip Report:

Coasters ridden:

Boomerang: 2, Steamin’ Deamon: 1, Apline Bobsleds: 1, Comet: 12!! Like last year, I was there early enough (around 11:15) so that I was able to get 12 consecutive rides, once in each row, in about an hour and a half. Still doesn’t beat my record last year of doing that in an hour. Then again, I went at the end of July last year and 2 trains were running last year. The Roadrunner Express was too short for me and the Nightmare was closed, and I heard that it’s going to be moved/dismantled after this year.

Stuff Closed: Nightmare, Cinderella’s Coach (Cinderella herself was there, but the coach wasnt running), the Rainbow, Lumberjack Splash & Paul Bunyan’s Bucket Brigade in Splashwater Kingdom, but I’m assuming that the ones other than Nightmare was due to lack of staffing (I was told by a security Bobby that the SK rides were closed due to the lifeguards going back to college). And I found out that another classic ride is gone: The Old 99 Trains. It must’ve been taken out earlier this year, because it’s still in the guidemaps.

I left around 4:15, after the Crappiest Parade Ever, which consisted of: A balloon/plane car driven by an old Fat man, the “Family of The Day”, some Looney Tunes characters (with Sylvester in Marshall Wild Bill McKay’s seat on his float, Bill wasn’t performing today), Cinderella, The Flash (the only JL character still walking around), and the Blues Brothers (they have their own show this year) on their own float at the end. And that’s it. This little kid sitting next to me said “That’s the parade?” and his mom told him “This is only the Great Escape, hunny.” to which I said “This aint Great Adventure, kid.” True Story. Once again, I didn’t have a camera handy for all this.

After all this, I ate at a Chinese Buffet beyond the park, and found a Wal-Mart, an Outback, and a Drive-in Theater (which was playing Talladega Nights, WTC, Invincible & Accepted)

And finally we come to Today: Nothing really spectacular, just driving home and finding LI being battered by what’s left of Ernesto. Now I’m here catching up for lost time on the internet and typing the blog you’re reading now.

An ex-girlfriend turned me on to Rosanne, and I’ve not been the same since. This is definitely something I’ll have to look for when I’m out Hallow-”pre”-ning next week.

And yeah, that finale was one of the worst ever. Except for the last episode of “Clarissa Explains it All,” when Sam raped Clarissa after murdering Ferguson. Wait, what?

Ghosted by Kyle @ 09/02/2006 6:56 PM EDT

Not that I enjoy Roseanne or plan to watch it but because the series finale was mentioned I feel I should mention it’s going to be on the Oxygen channel in about 3 minutes.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 09/02/2006 6:57 PM EDT

So, this weekend is 80’s weekend on Encore! freakin’ awesome, and in Halloween news, Encore! HBO and Cinemax have given me: Ghostbusters, Gremlins 2, and Beetlejuice in the past week. So worth the extra cash, now I’m ready to get my bite sized snickers and eat candy corn and peanuts.

Which brings me to this: Does anyone else ever mix Candy Corn and Peanuts in a big bowl to sit out? If you havn’t; DO IT! It’s a tradition round here and it’s amazing, I promise.

Ghosted by Fox @ 09/02/2006 7:20 PM EDT

Looks like I wasn’t the only one burned by TARGET. After getting all fired up about going, there was nothing Halloweeny out. I asked and the associate was very helpful. The Halloween stuff is in the building but not on display yet. :(

I, like Jessica Marie, was not allowed to watch Roseanne and, to be honest, that fact doesn’t bother me. I love John Goodman but I don’t really have any interest in catching up on that show.

Speaking of the TREEHOUSE OF HORROR, I am always surprised at the lack of Simpsons content on here. I know it’s not my place; it’s Matt’s house and he can do what he wants. However, as many Simpsonian references are dropped on here, I am a little befuttled.

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/02/2006 7:22 PM EDT

I love Roseanne, including the final season.
Manimal,I would assume the reason there’s no Simpsons on X-E is because there’s SO MUCH Simpsons related stuff online. What’s the point of adding to it?
And on that note, fuck people who jump on the “Simpsons sucks now” nerd bandwagon. The Simpsons is T.V.’s funniest show,to this day. Every now and then there’s a not so funny episode, but overall they’re hillarious.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 09/02/2006 7:30 PM EDT

Right on Nicky!

I also forgot to add that I haven’t seen the new Swedish Marine Life, and the Swedish Fish themselves were a staple of my frat’s weekly Wednesday Night house parties over the summer.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/02/2006 7:39 PM EDT

Oh godddddd. Is the one where she kills everyone and sings in there? That’s the BEST.

Ghosted by Denise @ 09/02/2006 7:40 PM EDT

I agree the Simpson’s is still a funny show, but not the Treehouse of horros any more. They’ve been painful to watch for quite some time now.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 09/02/2006 7:41 PM EDT

Invader Norbert, the last time I went to Great Escape, it was awesome. I think. I don’t really remember it. :\

Ghosted by Denise @ 09/02/2006 7:43 PM EDT

I like Roseanne because it makes me feel better about being poor middle-class white trash.

Ghosted by Mystie @ 09/02/2006 8:00 PM EDT

Kid Nicky, yeah, I thought about that and that is probably the reason. (Man, I am agreeing with you a lot lately).
That still doesn’t really satisfy though. Yeah there is a lot of Simpsons stuff out there but I still wouldn’t mind an X-E take on some piece of Simpsonmania or whatever. (p.s. please don’t take this as a whine or complaint. Just happy to be on the team, boss)

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/02/2006 8:30 PM EDT

This Rosanne thing I saw just last night. It goes firmly into my “things that I want desperately and would give a testicle to own if they made it but no one will ever make it and I’m a raving looney for wanting it, but fuck off it’s an awesome idea that nobody understands” catagorey.

I’ve loved the Roseanne halloween episodes and I’ve been wanting this for years.

The first thing I thought and am a little ashamed to admit cause they weren’t nearly as good but were still pretty damn good when I saw this in the store was “maybe they will do Home Improvement Halloween collection if this does well.”

Not really, the first thing I thought was “YES, I cannot belive this is a world where my such specific whims are eventually being catered to.” But I thought the Home Improvement thing second.

I remember fondly when Simpsons Halloween and Roseanne Halloween were together more or less. that was always my nearly favourite week of October.

Back when Simpsons were good Halloween episodes. Back when they were Halloweeny, not just weird or killed people, but HALLOWEENY, and in OCTOBER!

I don’t know about all of you, but I’ve been getting “Halloween” Simpsons in November. I don’t even want to get started on that.

But I will say what the Fuck with SImpsons Halloween Collections? I’ve been waiting for that for years, no brainer, but they’ve only done this really cool looking VHS box set that is very cool halloweeny but only two Treehouse of Horrors out of six and the DVD with a slightly random mix of Halloween episodes, which I am thankful fore. But Give me ALL OF EM.

Anyway, I’m pleased beyond description about Roseanne halloween episode collection. THere is absolutely no way we types of people are so numerous to warrent this, but fuck the odds, I’m ecxstatic.

Oh, and I’m getting my job at a halloween store back. I love my resume: I show them my jack o’lantern tattoo on my wrist and say “when do I start?” It has begun.

Ghosted by spooky @ 09/02/2006 9:15 PM EDT

Spooky: Is it a regular happy jack-o’lantern or an evil one?

Ghosted by Phil G. @ 09/02/2006 9:20 PM EDT

Oh, Mystie, I completely agree about Roseanne. ;)

Ghosted by Denise @ 09/02/2006 9:29 PM EDT

I just gotta say, my favorite Rosanne costume had to be the ventriloquest and dummy. That was just awesome.

Ghosted by Ronald MacKinnon @ 09/02/2006 10:12 PM EDT

Just as I was reading this, nickelodeon went from Sponge Bob to Roseanne. Crazy. And it’s the episode where she starts writing as a birthday present. I really didn’t enjoy when they won the lottery and I like to pretend the last episode never happened. Not that that makes me original. Y’know, thay made a Sponge Bob Halloween DVD, we have that one.
Today it was chilly here and when I got home today, I could smell a fireplace. It made me want one so badly. I went to Yankee Candle Co. today to stock up on fall candles. Lucky me they were having a sale. I got Gingerbread Maple, Cranberry Chutney, Pumpkin Spice, Pumpkin Pie, Vanilla Oak, and …..the new one Autumn Leaves. It is SO good. They nailed it. They also had a Halloween one that was Candy scented, and pretty good smelling, but they only had it in the big twenty dollar jars, and the small ones were on sale. I frickin’ love candles. I also love hearing everyone elses anticipations for the upcoming seasons.

Ghosted by kb @ 09/02/2006 10:16 PM EDT

I’m eating candy, listening to the XE Halloween jukebox and reading Madd Matt articles.

Hurricane leftovers are lame. Holla.

Add me to the total victims of a Halloween-less Target. We should have just gone to the mall where the cool kids go.

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 09/02/2006 10:30 PM EDT

Damn Matt,

The ticket stub of Dracula’s Castle on the trapper keeper makes me very sad.. : ( im sure it makes you sad too.

Good tribute though. just very very sad.

Im happy though because this year, at the NYS fair on the midway, they got a new dark ride, with brand new stunts, pretty good stuff.

Ghosted by Don @ 09/02/2006 10:38 PM EDT

Add me to the list of people with Targets lacking Halloween goodness yet. I was so excited as I made my way to the seasonal aisles, only to see the familiar signs telling me stuff will be there soon. So depressing!

WHY does this site HATE ME? It just totally ate the paragraph+ I spent all of 6 minutes typing! First it negates my very existence, and now this?! :’(

Ghosted by c0rp0rate Z0mb1e @ 09/02/2006 11:08 PM EDT

This site hates a lot of people. Try not to take it too personally.

Ghosted by Mystie @ 09/02/2006 11:15 PM EDT

I suppose I’ll get used to it… anyways, my first post on this thread addressed 2 key points… #1 that I totally attended a laborday picnic thing (even though it rained) at my boyfreind’s dad’s house in a halloween babydoll shirt bought post season last year at Target (they kick ass for their halloween stuff – I used to have this AWESOME display of a holographic vampire from Halloween a few years back that a freind who worked there got me) and a day glo orange zip up hoody, also a target original…
And #2 that I would give my right eyeball, or most anything else, for that matter, for the stickery thing of the zombie on the enhanced halloweenified blog page preview… that thing would make a KILLER necklace… I have a penchant for turning things into necklaces…

Ghosted by c0rp0rate Z0mb1e @ 09/02/2006 11:21 PM EDT

Damn I love this site…

Rosanne is really hit and miss with me, but I’m a halloween nut, so it’s great to see this…

Random question…

Anyone remember a horror classics playset, that included a few figures (semi bendable I believe)…

The playset was cardboard I think… I vaguely remember dracula being a definite in the set. It had to be during the 80s…

Ghosted by Squidboy @ 09/02/2006 11:31 PM EDT

When I was 5 or 6 (so ‘88 or 89) I was OBSESSED with Dracula, and I DO remember a horror classics playset… not sure if it is the same one you reference, tho… this one was a single peice of cardboard that opened to fold out like a pop-up book, and my figs WEREN’T bendable AT ALL… I distinctly remember that irking me something FEIRCE…. the only thing that moved were the arms, and only at the shoulder… but I know they stood about 12 inches… Ol’ Drac was just the right size to bite the necks of all the barbies my parents kept buying me for some damned reason…

Ghosted by c0rp0rate Z0mb1e @ 09/02/2006 11:40 PM EDT

If you plan on writing a long post, I suggest typing it out in Word, Wordpad, Notepad or whatever first, and copy paste it into here, just in case something goes awry.

Okay, we took a trip to a second Target over in Jersey tonight, and…what a Hallo haul we had. :0

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/02/2006 11:52 PM EDT

So I’m around alot, but hardly ever for the SNT. Does anyone ever mix candy corn and peanuts? I asked earlier, but just silence…..

Ghosted by Fox @ 09/02/2006 11:55 PM EDT

Also, mix it, eat it, dance around in joy. Candy Corn + Peanuts = Awesome. Peanuts with the red skins on them work best too.

Ghosted by Fox @ 09/02/2006 11:56 PM EDT

I had to fucking work all night or I would’ve been at Target. I plan to go tomorrow, though. I was out there Wednesday night, and they only had some bins set up for the candy, but that’s all! :( I was so sad… They better have more tomorrow – I know they had an immense amount of empty shelves, and I can’t see them leaving all that open space for so long. Managers go insane over that kind of stuff.

I loved Roseanne, too. My family used to call me Darlene, because my personality matched hers so well. Had a little crush on David, too. :P

Ghosted by Ryane @ 09/02/2006 11:58 PM EDT

Right on Ryane, what was it about David? For me it was the hair. Something about the 90’s and guys with long hair.

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 09/03/2006 12:03 AM EDT

hehe, yeah I meant to add, for c0rp0rate Z0mb1e: It’s good to get into the habit of copying and pasting before you post here. I know there’s nothing worse than losing all those words in one second. :(

Fox: Sorry, I always hated Candy Corn. But, I can’t eat it even if I wanted to – it has gelatin in it, and I’m a vegan. And, I’m having a hard time remembering what Candy Corn tasted like, to see if it would’ve been a good combo or not. :\ Sorry!
