08/26/2006: August Megaparty #26: Vending Toys!

I’m seeing dead leaves. It’s windy, kind of cold and halfway to stormy. It smells like the inside of a freshly used washing machine outside. Autumnesque Saturday Night Threads were always my favorite.

While cleaning out some boxes, I came across a suspicious plastic bag filled with really old vending machine eggs/toys that I have absolutely no recollection of purchasing. The eggs are really small and the contents universally antiquated to the point where I’m going to say they’re ’70s era at the youngest, and if for no other reason than to justify the fact that I own them, tonight we are going to see what’s inside.

Unworthy of more than a passing mention was a bunch of crappy plastic jewelry, but what’s seen above warms my heart to degrees five thousand times greater. Squirmels! Baby Squirmels! “Squirmels,” for those unaware, was a collection of soft, fuzzy worms with friendly eyes with an “invisible” wad of twine attached to the each of their noses. The idea was that kids could hold the twine and manipulate the cute worms to look like they were running around under their own power, and lord, I loved those things.  These worms aren’t of the official Squirmels brand variety, but they’re exactly alike in everything except size. If I could hug them without disintegrating them, I would. There were at least ten of ‘em in the bag, and that’s at least ten reasons for me to do this: :) :) :) :) :)

With junky jewelry and happy Squirmels eliminated, what was left was a hodgepodge of goofy toys and charms that remind me very much of the basket full of freebies my childhood dentist would offer up to all the cavity-ridden kids who took their sentences like men. The skeleton figure is a favorite, but I’m also fond of the weird monkey pendant and random black alligator, probably because it gives me the chance to make up some connected history shared between the two. The lady fingertip thing is almost worth another set of emoticons. On the lesser side are the inoperable lockets, stupid yellow cat and lousy balloon. I will chew and swallow them now.

Haha when I saw the pictures, I instantyl thought of the dentist!

Congratulations Christmas Jukebox. You’ve crashed a Mac. I’m not even mad. That’s amazing!

I instantly thought of Oriental Trader.

The kid in the background if freaky deaky! It’s always nice to find random toys you did’nt know you had! I am so jelous that you have so many worms! I saw some while I was on vacation. There was even an 80’s TV commercial playing on loop to advertise them, if my hubby wasnt so cheep and I had the american money, I so would have bought one!

Good old school X-E type of mini-article: A quality bag o’ crap.

Got excited yesterday when Mrs. Manimal bought E. Claire a pumpkin/Halloween sleeper at TARGET. Unfortunately, they do not have their stuff out yet but it’s a start.

Posted by The Manimal @ 08/26/2006 8:42 PM EDT

IHAQ — Did you see the stand and video at an airport?  I noticed that on a few recent trips, but didn’t have time to stop.

Posted by Matt @ 08/26/2006 8:43 PM EDT

Manimal — Yeah, I thought the department stores would’ve gotten it all out by now, but alas, it’s all about Back2School still. Give it a week or so.

On the bright side, some stuff has been filtering in.

Posted by Matt @ 08/26/2006 8:45 PM EDT

Matt: No, it was in some overpriced tourist store.

Manimal: How old is E. Claire now? If I remember correctly she was born about 4 months after my son.

Posted by IHAQ @ 08/26/2006 8:45 PM EDT

Manimal, I ment before my son :P

Posted by IHAQ @ 08/26/2006 8:47 PM EDT

Yeah, all they had was some baby clothes/bibs/etc.

She is 19 months old now. A total treat of anarchic activity.

Posted by The Manimal @ 08/26/2006 8:48 PM EDT

Does anyone remember those things that look like the squirmels above, but you would “pet” them and the static of your hand would make them move and look alive?  Pretty stupid in retrospect, but also pretty fun for a quarter.

Course, I’d usually just get gum with my quarter.  Those giant gumballs that make your jaw hurt and lose their flavor after 20 min are irresistable!

Posted by Yet Another Matt @ 08/26/2006 8:48 PM EDT

With autumn coming up, I feel that I should offer everyone here an apology in advance.  For one final semester, I am trapped in the wretched festering pustule on the arse of Texas known as Abilene.  What that means is that we don’t have autumn.  I know that where many of you are, leaves are turning red and orange and yellow like in a Thanksgiving television special.  Here, they’re still green.  They will remain green until around the beginning of December, when some hellish lightning-and-thunder ice storm will batter them all to the ground in one cataclysmic day of destruction.  And all the Texans will gather at the windows and say to one another, “Look, it’s snowing!”  And then the day after that will be sixty degrees and sunny.

And so I implore all of you to not take it personally if, in response to a remark about the beautiful falling leaves or Jack Frost nipping at your nose or a particularly picturesque frost, I express a desire for you to choke on a bottlecap.  I’ll try to control myself, but it was a hundred degrees today, with nothing like a cool-down in sight.  I make no promises.

As you were.

Posted by Jedoc @ 08/26/2006 8:53 PM EDT

Jedoc That’s exactly how I used to feel when I lived in Los Angeles.  One Chrstmas I was psyched because it was 55 and rainy.  Sometimes back home the christmas would be 55 and rainy.  If it was the heat wave of the century.

You can be cranky with us while we talk about fall, but then we can be cranky with you while were shoveling our $%@#$ driveways another @#^&$ time because of more ^@&%! snow.

Posted by Yet Another Matt @ 08/26/2006 8:58 PM EDT

Yet Another Matt: Deal.

Posted by Jedoc @ 08/26/2006 9:04 PM EDT

Still on vacation I am, but I’m glad to be in the first SNT in the new blog! (or is this the 2nd one? I lost count).

Still, I really have nothing new or interesting to add, except up here in Upstate NY (currently in the Saranac Lake area, I’ll be in Lake George after tuesday), there are some ugly-assed people here. Last night at a free concert, I saw a man who could best be desceibed as Gollum in a Yankees jacket.

Survey: Where did you see the ugliest person/people you’ve ever seen? Can you describe it? Did you puke or somethin at the sight?

Posted by Invader Norbert @ 08/26/2006 9:05 PM EDT

does anyone remember those really amazing plastic ninjas, one used to get in vending machines??

Posted by kevin. @ 08/26/2006 9:09 PM EDT

In the mirror! Hohoho.

Well, someone had to say it…

Posted by Cap'n B @ 08/26/2006 9:09 PM EDT

Alright, the time has come. I went Hollywood yesterday and got some long overdue additions to the collection. Tonight, I watch one of them.

I Heart Huckabees
Shattered Glass
Get Carter

You know the drill.

Posted by Knegative @ 08/26/2006 9:13 PM EDT

One time I got a vending machine balloon.  It had a plastic mouthpiece on it so you could only blow it up and then watch it deflate, no water balloons or tying the end.  Like wtf is the fun of that?  I love collecting happy bunny stickers and I also got a family guy sticker with Chris (the son) saying “I think someone just peed in my pants” I have a 13 year old cousin just getting into family guy and I think I’m going to buy a bunch of stickers for him.  He would get a bigger kick out of them then me.

I think this is my first offical saturday and sunday off from work since I have been working there (2 months) so let the SNTing begin!

Oh yeah I went garage sailing today (I have gotten addicted) and I got for 5 bucks a fully functional homemedic backmassager, for 4 bucks a meat slicer (my best friend has always wanted one, from what he says) that works of course, two knives that haven’t been used, a little maglite that just needs batteries all together for 4 bucks.  That lady wanted EVERYTHING gone because they were moving.  Which is great for the buyer because you can get a great deal.

any other people that enjoy going to garage sales or am I a black sheep about that subject?  Also go to yardsalequeen.com for lots of info about the subject.

Posted by Goob @ 08/26/2006 9:15 PM EDT

Kevin, I wrote a bit about those ninjas in this old review.

Posted by Matt @ 08/26/2006 9:16 PM EDT

I used to go to yardsales. Mainly to find books or boardgames. Pretty standard, I suppose.

That seems like an awfully rude survey topic, Norby. Throw up on sight? What are we former Republican leaders?

That being said, if you haven’t already, meet Brian Peppers

Posted by Knegative @ 08/26/2006 9:26 PM EDT

My favorite vending machine toy is the little sticky hands.

Knegative: This is a tough call, because I neither care about nor have seen any of those three movies. My pick would be Get Carter, simply because it has Sly Stallone, Michael Caine, and fucking Nightcrawler in it!

Posted by Joseph Valencia @ 08/26/2006 9:26 PM EDT

Kneg, sorry, haven’t seen any of those. Got some APOCALYPSE NOW in the background while I work on my Atlantic World/slave trade ppt.
Jedoc, don’t feel bad. I have never had a real fall or winter either (FL native and now in middle GA). Must be nice to see the leaves change…

TOPIC OF DISCUSSION: (Kicking this one around for awhile and tonight feels right) “GHOSTBUSTERS II: What went wrong?”

(1)One obvious problem is the 5 year gap between the original and the sequel (reference GREMLINS 2 also)
(2)  Trying to follow MR. STAY PUFT with the Statue of Liberty=bad move
(3) Mood slime?? I don’t know, man.

YOUR TURN!!!!

Posted by The Manimal @ 08/26/2006 9:27 PM EDT

You left out the most important person in the movie Joseph, Rachael!!!

Posted by Knegative @ 08/26/2006 9:28 PM EDT

Aw, the Squirmels are cute. My latest vending machine gets have been one of those Spongebob “Hotrod” stickers, and the “Chip and Dale inside food” dealies. I got doubles on the dumbest one (Chip in a yam. A yam!!!).
Happy Saturday everybody!
I saw plenty of Halloween goods at Big Lots last week (Xmas too).
I adore my California winters. Sure, someday I’d like to see real live snow actually fall from the sky, just like I’ve heard about, but I’d never want to live somewhere where it happened on a regular basis. Ever.

Posted by squee4242 @ 08/26/2006 9:30 PM EDT

Kneg: Oh shit, it has Tifa too!

Manimal: The problem with Ghostbusters II was that it suffered from ‘Rocky II Syndrome’. Basically, despite overcoming various hardships in the first film and proving to NYC’s government that they weren’t frauds, the ‘Busters start out at ground zero in the sequel and are forced to go through more or less the same trial they underwent in the original movie.

The Kid In The Picture is Disturbing

Posted by Devin @ 08/26/2006 9:39 PM EDT

Trust me, I know its an odd selection. The cashier let me know quite clearly that he thought I was a weirdo.

On principle, I should watch Get Carter. It’s been a long time, and it has both Rachael and Alan Cumming, as me and Joseph have pointed out.

On the other hand, Shattered Glass is just a brilliantly solid movie about watching my poor Hayden (the next Keanu, I’m so betting on it) fall apart piece by piece under true allegations of him fabricating stories for the magazine he writes for. You’ll remember the real life Stephen Glass fiasco, I hope. Well it’s about that.

Posted by Knegative @ 08/26/2006 9:40 PM EDT

Snow rocks.  Any book or movie is automatically improved 128% if it is consumed while drinking a hot beverage in a room with a fireplace while snow piles up outside.  And then there’s the sledding.  Sure, our farm was a hundred miles from the nearest hill of any great consequence, but you can get a great deal of use out of 2500 acres when it’s perfectly flat and covered with snow.  For this activity, you will need the hood off an old Plymouth, fifty feet of rope, and a pick-up with four wheel drive.  Hours of entertainment.  Nothing says “holiday season” like skidding sideways into a row of round bales at truly moronic velocities.

Posted by Jedoc @ 08/26/2006 9:47 PM EDT

I see a lot of ugly people when I go to the DMV.  Or as it’s called in Ohio, the “B”MV.  The “B” is for “Bureau.”  And I spent about 4 hours at various BMV offices yesterday, so I got my fill of uggos.

In other news, my website is up again.  There is practically nothing there.  But feel free to stop by.

Oh, and Kneg, you should watch “I Heart Huckabees” just to hear “I’m sorry Dad, I did not know.”  I always crack up at that guy’s delivery.

Matt - I’m so bummed that he AMP is almost over.  But I’m also elated, because I got a new Oriental Trading Co. catalog today, and that can only mean one thing - Halloween is coming up with a quickness.  Can’t wait for the Countdown.

Posted by kyle @ 08/26/2006 9:49 PM EDT

Jedoc -

Amen to that. I can’t wait for the twin punch of awesomeness that is Halloween and Christmas. Just seeing the aisles in the stores is getting me pumped. That and the fact that it was 106 degrees here in Missouri not a week ago. I’m ready for some fall!

And, now for something completely different. We’ve been MANICURSED…Where’s Dohopoki?

Posted by Terror Claws Cole @ 08/26/2006 9:57 PM EDT

It amazes me that when I was little, some of most often played with toys I had were from a vending machine, don’t get me wrong, I loved my TMNT’s and Transformers. But I didn’t want them to succumb to the tortures of being drowned in gasoline, and lit on Fire.

So now to change the subject, does anyone remember the toy monster you could Dissect? I can’t remember the name of it, but you filled the inside with slime, like the infamous He-Man slime I don’t know if anyone remembers that stuff, anyway the toy came with a plastic scalpel and a pair of oversized tweezers, and a bunch of hard plastic internal organs.

I have worms, but they’re not nearly as cute as Squirmels, mine have teeth…
“currently in the Saranac Lake area, I’ll be in Lake George after Tuesday”
Is it bad that when I read Saranac I thought of the Sarlacc pit from Return of the Jedi? I guess that’s kinda expected from me.

Devin- you talking about Brian Peppers? The great thing about him is that he’s a sex offender. Fantastic!

Posted by Darth Poop @ 08/26/2006 9:59 PM EDT

Matt- The first time I tried to post my previous post I got a message saying that you can only post every 15 seconds and that I should slow down, is this a sign that the horrors of Greymatter are still haunting us?

Posted by Darth Poop @ 08/26/2006 10:02 PM EDT

Jedoc: I live in Florida. I feel your pain.

Posted by jazzy @ 08/26/2006 10:03 PM EDT

No, it just tells you to slow down. Cowboy. You can still double post, trust me, I know. You just can’t do it within 15 seconds. I thought the blatently clear text, that you yourself quoted, would have been sufficient.

Kinda like how the article I linked, said Peppers was a sex offender.  :)

Posted by Knegative @ 08/26/2006 10:04 PM EDT

And Kneg is back with the biting sarcasm again.  Ah, it wouldn’t be the SNT without it.

:)

Posted by kyle @ 08/26/2006 10:06 PM EDT

When it comes to Poop, I’ve got a hair trigger. I admit that.

Your site gets an A+, Kyle. For the front page’s background, and the crazystraw dildo. No sarcasm there.

Posted by Knegative @ 08/26/2006 10:09 PM EDT

I was going to talk about the uglest person I saw, but then Kneg linked it before I had a chance! Good old Brian Peppers!

Kneg, I have’nt seen of your movie choices for tonight, but I vost against I heart huckabees, because for some reason the title bothers me!

I perosnally love Ghostbusters 2, it’s prolly because I saw that movie a million times before I ever saw the first. What does bother me about the movie is the beginning where the kids all scream “We want He-man!” I dates the movie, it makes me sad when that happen’s, some refrence that shows how old the movie is. I’ll be sad when Back To The Future 2 has this problem.

Posted by IHAQ @ 08/26/2006 10:09 PM EDT

Thanks, Kneg.  I came up with that joke like 3 months ago in the shower, and just happened to find a related image on GIS.  Do you know how hard it is to walk around with a one-liner and not have a chance to use it?  It’s fucking frustrating, let me tell you.

Posted by kyle @ 08/26/2006 10:11 PM EDT

Darth: I was unaware of that feature, but no, it’s not GM.  Must be something already a part of the Wordpress system.  To be honest, if it’s working, I’d prefer to keep it.  Posting twice in fifteen seconds is more often for bad reasons than good. :)

Posted by Matt @ 08/26/2006 10:12 PM EDT

Ghostbusters II?  Slow night on SNT…

I think the problem was that Viggo, or whatever his name was, was in a PAINTING.  Not scary, not funny, just a painting.  And he finally comes out at the end and gets slimed…  Whoot.

Having said that, I still like the movie well enough for some cheesy fun.

Posted by Mr. Boligarky @ 08/26/2006 10:13 PM EDT

My dad took me to see GB II at the theater.  I hated it then, and I hate it now.  How anyone can like it is beyond me.

Posted by kyle @ 08/26/2006 10:15 PM EDT

What’s even sadder is that He-Man’s lamentable fall had already occurred by 1989 (I was 10 when I was GHOSTBUSTERS II in the theater and even I knew that MOTU was past its prime). I guess that part of the movie just reminded me that the people who were making the movie had no idea what was still cool in kiddie land and, in that respect, dated the movie even in its original release. :(

Posted by The Manimal @ 08/26/2006 10:15 PM EDT

And more props to kyle on the website.  Are you “Maxxin’ and Relaxxxin’” right now?

Posted by Mr. Boligarky @ 08/26/2006 10:19 PM EDT

I enjoy living in Boise because we get snow in the mountains were it belongs not clogging up my roadways as I commute to work but within 45 minutes we have sledding(or sking if its your thing) bliss. As for Brian Peppers I always confuse him with Barry Pepper the actor from Knockaround Guys and I wonder why people find him unattractive so thanks for the link.

Posted by mrjayberry @ 08/26/2006 10:24 PM EDT

Nay, Mr. Boligarky, I am not Maxxin’ and Relaxxxin’.  I am “Workin’ and Fightin’ Off Sleep” right now.  And counting the minutes until I can leave.  And sereiously craving alcohol and cigarettes.  But rest assured, I shall not only Maxx but also Relaxxx later tonight.

Posted by kyle @ 08/26/2006 10:25 PM EDT

Now correct me if I am wrong, but isn’t Brian Peppers from Maumee?  That’s like 20 minutes from where I live.  I should go look for him.

Posted by kyle @ 08/26/2006 10:26 PM EDT

Found the internet for SNT- whoot! (Still at my parent`s place in rural Quebec for a few days- dial up is the devil)

Took a walk through the woods with my Dad tonight - he built a little log cabin that we like to spend evenings in.  If I were to close my eyes and guess the month, I would have said October….the air had that SMELL, ya know? And the leaves were crunching under our feet already, and I got excited for apples off the tree and Thanksgiving and Halloween (which are both in Oct. here)  I apologize to all my fellow XErs who are still sweating it out, but summer is OVER here.

What went wrong with Ghostbusters 2? Well, Bill Murray is my favorite actor, so I am biased and I loved it.  However, I guess they tried too hard to make it `for the kids`, what with the slime, and dancing toasters and everything.  Whereas the first one was definately a more `grown up`kind of humor…same as the Gremlins 1 and 2 scenario actually!

Posted by Muppet Baby @ 08/26/2006 10:27 PM EDT

Christ, my posts are rife with spelling errors tonight.  Rife, I say!

Posted by kyle @ 08/26/2006 10:28 PM EDT

Off the top of my head, Barry Pepper (the actor) looks kinda like the lovechild of Alex Winter and Steve Burton (of General Hospital fame, and more importantly, Cloud Strife).

Posted by Knegative @ 08/26/2006 10:28 PM EDT

Matt, you’ll be happy to know that I work for Halloween Adventure, and we’re currently building/stocking all our seasonal stores right now.  Most of them will be open the first week of September.  If you feel like swinging down to Brick, NJ I could introduce you as a brother of mine and you could partake in “Family Discount Night” (step #1 in my ingenious plan to see Matt in real life)

Any chance we’ll see this treasure trove (term used loosely) or at least the Squirmels in this years fast approaching Lent Calendars?

Posted by WonKa @ 08/26/2006 10:45 PM EDT

Knegative:  Those of some tough movie choices.  I’ve seen all three and they’re all quality.

If you want a good drama, see Shattered Glass.  I’m still surprised he got away with be a phon for so long.

Get Carter is good, but I don’t think it’s the comedy classic everyone makes it out to be.

I Heart Huckabees, on the other hand, has a scene of Jude Law wearing those naked boobs you see in Halloween Shops every year and Jason Schwartzman for some reason is suckling them like a baby.  I think it’s a dream sequence.

Ghostbusters 2 I think gets unfairly picked on because the first one is a classic.  It’s still a good film by itself.

Yes but it was the first time I tried to post in a day and it said that, it was an obvious error and it could end up preventing someone from posting more than once in a single thread. And I mentioned that Herr Peppers was a sex offender because I believe Devin referred to him as a kid, which he is not and I assumed that Devin hadn’t read the article based on that statement.

I love Fall, I can’t wait. It also allows me to try out all the new sweatshirts and fall/winter clothes that I purchased. Plus, it means Halloween/horror movies/candy! The second half of the year has always been my favorite. Sure, I’ll bitch about the cold weather, but I can’t get enough of Halloween and Christmas.

We also just got a new town center around my way and I’m wanting to see what they do for the upcoming holidays. Should be interesting.

Totally agree with Manimal, this post was classic XE. :D For some reason the article I think of most when I think of this site is the Nerds Cereal Bowl one from a few years back. I remember bailing out of class that day, this was when I was still in high school, heading to the library, and reading the whole thing. I also made sure no one was looking over my shoulder and finding out how lame I was. That article, the Nads Hair gunk taste test, and a couple others (like the trip to make copies and the woman finding the Cyrstal Pepsi article) stand out as pure 100% XE from concentrate. Hooray for rambling!!

Posted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 08/26/2006 11:08 PM EDT

Sorry, Matt, but I haven’t seen much in the way of Halloween stuff around here, either, just some candy at the grocery store and one eisle of random fall stuff at Wal-Mart.

Snow? Ha! We in Southern New Jersey are lucky if we see snow in February and March…or at all. It’s that pesky “southern.” We usually get fairly late falls, too. Halloween last year was at least 70 degrees (much to my annoyance, since I was wearing a thick red sweater as part of my Winnie the Pooh costume).

While I love both “Ghostbusters” films, the second one is near and dear to my heart as one of the first movies my sisters and I saw in a theater with no parental supervision (the second was “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids”).

Posted by starwenn @ 08/26/2006 11:08 PM EDT

Alot of the stuff we sell is overpriced and not alot of great quality but there are a few gems and I roll my employee discount + after halloween discounts and pick up some nice masks and crap I wouldn’t buy otherwise, maybe after the season I’ll send yahs a box o’ stuff

Posted by WonKa @ 08/26/2006 11:09 PM EDT

Yeah, count me in the “loving Ghostbusters 2 group” too.  It was meant to be ridiculous and embraced its ridiculousness, so I think that gives it a pass for being…ridiculous.

Hey Matt,

I was in Times Square a coupla weeks ago, and went to the Toys R’ Us there. I understand you work in the area, quick question. Why is there still a gateway to Jurrassic Park? Are they trying to hold out for another movie or sumthing? Anyway it was freaky cause there was an employee trying to describe how much fun it is to throw around inflatable UFO’s. He ended up getting bored an trying to throw it in the T-Rex’s mouth.

Posted by Jester @ 08/26/2006 11:21 PM EDT

oh! I love when someone else talk about little cheap toys!!
Once, I had a lot of them. Then I use ‘em as keychains, and they got broken and lost. But I think that there are too many little cheap toys in the world to feel sorry about mine. Don’t you think so?
:) :) :)

Posted by yelinna @ 08/26/2006 11:23 PM EDT

Those UFO guys drive me CRAZY.  They’re stationed at the “crossroads” of like five different sections, and it’s impossible to get through them, what with the flying UFOs, tourists looking up and whatnot.

The JP dino still being there is a running joke with me and some buddies.  It’s an impressive animatronic for sure, though.

2 things have turned me from GBII, not much of a turn because Yanosh and Bill Murray make up for it, but yeah.
1. The Painting at the end… ’nuff said
2. The fact that when Ghostbusters is mentioned around my father he won’t stop quoting the free parking line

everything else though, from the NES controller for Lady Liberty, to the dancing toaster and the Scoleri brothers is fine by me.

Right after GBII came out on video a friend of my parents made a tape for me that was Ghostbusters and then at the end when it faded to black the tape immediately faded up with the “5 years later” essentially making it one big movie.  I still have that tape and even though I got the boxed set on DVD I’ll rock that tape in a second quality be damned!

Squee does that mean you have never seen it snow?  Wow.  That is one of my most favorite things.  I suppose the ocean is a pretty good alternative though.
I got those fuzzy things when I was younger.  I had always thought you just were supposed to rub them while they were on a table and they’d wiggle.  I guess not.
And…there’s only one week left of summer!  I was at walgreens tonight checking out the halloween pencils.  Made me smile.
I got some pics of my car post hail storm, if anyone wants to see, click my name.

Slime trying to molest an infant made Ghost Busters 2 for me. God I’m messed up. I also love that toaster; it was a happy toaster who liked to dance to happy music. Yay!

The UFO guy got really pushy to, stopped short of calling me a commy for not buying one. All I wanted to do is go see the Superman Costume, Instead I get assaulted when I first walk in the door with “PICTURE TAKEN, PICTURE TAKEN, HEY THERE SON I SEE THAT YOU ARE FROM OUT OF TOWN, GET YOUR PICTURE TAKEN IN A REAL LIFE TOYS R’ US!!!!!!!”

Jesus guys there are Toys R’ Us’ in Tennessee, Lemme alone!

Ah well, I did get to see a toy of Krypto, supermans Super dog tho, so that was pretty cool.

And kb, you sure someone didn’t try to kill you. Your car looks more like the after math of a mob hit.

Posted by Darth Poop @ 08/26/2006 11:33 PM EDT

Jester: I hope you got to check out the candy section, which outside of the theatrics, is probably the most impressive thing about that TRU.

Posted by Matt @ 08/26/2006 11:34 PM EDT

Darth
That would make for a better story wouldn’t it?

Posted by kb @ 08/26/2006 11:38 PM EDT

Kb, you should totally add ninja to the mob story. Everything is better with ninja.

Mob & Ninjas= broken Honda windows?  How do I make myself appear tough in the scenario?

“Ghostbusters II?  Slow night on SNT…” Mr. Boligarky
With 80+ posts before midnight, I wouldn’t be so sure. :)
Thanks for all the feedback everybody. I guess I should have been clearer when I started this thing. It’s not that I hate GB II (I had a poster on my door back in ‘89) and I will watch it when it comes on COMEDY CENTRAL but it just ranks up there in the missed opportunity category and I was curious to see what you all thought.
So, with my last post before bed, Bill Murray is funny, legacy of the GHOSTBUSTERS not ruined by the sequel, but I just remember the exact moment I saw the teaser trailer and the excitement I felt. Sadly, I also remember the exact moment when I realized that it wasn’t as good as the first one.
Happy SNT and to all a blah blah

I’m back!!  Lucky you.

For once, thank god, I’m at a house with (a) a computer, and (b) cable.  Now my question is:  What the fuck is on Saturday nights anymore?  I haven’t had access to cable in months.  Suggestions?

Posted by kyle @ 08/26/2006 11:49 PM EDT

Man, I am slipping. That’s 2 “anonymous” posts by me this week.
Sorry.

Posted by The Manimal @ 08/26/2006 11:49 PM EDT

Ah Hell Ya!!!

I got mesmerized by the Do it yourself Pixie Stick stand. That was pretty cool. I belive it was Pixie sticks, anyway they had the long clear tube and you got to fill it with various powders and crystalized candies. I ate an entire stick then wondered down into the basement to find heaven itself.

The video game section seems to be the bastard of the toystores lately. I noticed the trend in New York and started taking note around here also, All the Video Game sections are out of the way and require a Fedora and a Bullwhip to find.

The best part of the trip was getting lost in China Town, I purchased a Bootleg set of toys.

The package proudly exclaims “ALL THE SUPAHERO IS COMEING NOW!!!!!” It consists of Six figures

White Power Ranger
Batman (From the George Clooney Era)
The Hulk (who has his pants and skin color reversed I.E. Green Pants, Purple Skin)
Superman (whose head is the same size as his torso
Spiderman)
Mr. Incredible (From the Pixar movie The Incredibles)

All for the low cost of “Flive Dorrars”

Oh yeah they also have Red LED lights in their chest for some weird reason, the package exclaims that every figure comes with a special weapon, as there were none in the package, I assume the chest lights are teh weapon.

Wonka, are they hiring right now?  I meant to go to apply for a weekend position at that Halloween place, but i did’nt think they opened yet…btw, i live in Brick, in the Mantoloking section.

Happy SNT everyone!  I got a new DS game today!  Big Brain Academy, the follow up to Brain Age…its awesome, it measures your brain weight and tells you what kind of brain you have ( doctor, museum curator, calculator…etc…)

Posted by mandy_Reeves @ 08/27/2006 12:08 AM EDT

I’m hoping that the stylishly engraved Final Fantasy III edition of the DS that’s coming out in Japan will be sold here as well. Because right now, there aren’t any DS games I actually want to play, and nothing says “I Bought This thing for 1 game” like having it’s characteres engraved on it :D

Posted by Knegative @ 08/27/2006 12:11 AM EDT

I do not know from Kristen Holt, but I do know that those pictures of Cat Schwartz were equal in hotness to any picutre of Morgan.

Posted by kyle @ 08/27/2006 12:14 AM EDT

Whoa, whoa, whoa, why isn’t she employed by the network anymore? She’s lightyears better than Kristin. Now I am pissed with G4.

Hooray for random piles of crap blog entries!

What went wrong with Ghostbusters 2?  Nothing!  The movie is AWESOME.  And by Awesome, I mean so-incredibly-cool-that-you-cannot-possibly-comprehend-the-coolness-level.

Jedoc:

I feel your pain, man.  I’m from Waco.  We’ve had over 40 days of consecutive 100+ temps.

Autumn does not exist.  Here are the Seasons in Waco, which goes for much of Texas, starting in January:

Jan-Feb, maybe March if God’s feeling screwy: Winter.  This averages highs in the 40s and 50s.  Occasionally it will freeze and everyone will Panic.  Snow means that doomsday is coming.

March-mid June, if we’re lucky: Summer.  Average temps in the 80s and 90s

mid June-end of October: HELL ON EARTH.  This is when the world erupts in pure fire.  Coincidentally, this is Band season.  Why can’t we march when it’s cold?

Novemeber-December: Spring. “Cool” temps (in the 70s), cloudy days.  Not unusual to be in the 60s in December.

In short, our weather’s frakked up.

Im with squee…i wouldnt want to live where it snows either, but maybe i am biased since ive never lived somewhere that it does. I like fall and winter in california but i think i like it so much because its coldER but not THAT cold…
Oh and someone said fall starts next week but i think technically it starts on sept 22 or 24 or something like that…now that i dont WISH it started next week! Fall/winter has all the best things, halloween, my birthday, thanksgiving and christmas…oh and school starting! yeah im a nerd.

happy SNT everybody!!!

Whats wrong with GB II?

Bad Dub.
Love Triangle that fizzles out.
A crippled kid being harrassed by thugs.
90s multi-ethnic gang, so PC.
Jackie Chan getting his leg broken.

Wait thats whats wrong with Rumble In the Bronx. Which like GB II rules.

In reflecting on cheap crap we love, it makes me wonder: Why no cheap cool XE crap? No XE t-shirts for purchase? No XE crapola for giveaways? I wanna identify as a sad, sad, nothing-else-to-do-but-SNT XE Blogger.

Posted by Terror Claws Cole @ 08/27/2006 12:43 AM EDT

There was once a glorious sale on past XE items.  The $50 Mystery Box Sale!  Children still whisper about it in remote corridors of their schools, oohing and aahing over rumored contents.  Alas, I did not buy one, and have flogged myself daily as a form of self punishment ever since.

Posted by kyle @ 08/27/2006 12:54 AM EDT

I was the one who said fall starts next week.  I guess cause it starts getting much colder here right in the beginning of sept/when school starts. I’ve always considered that the beginning. Winter starts here just about thanksgiving.

I don’t think this has been mentioned yet, but apparently the Back to the Future ride at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL is permanently closing next month. :(

Posted by Luap @ 08/27/2006 1:02 AM EDT

I have always wanted to go to universal studios just so I could ride the BTTF ride! Well that just sucks!

Posted by IHAQ @ 08/27/2006 1:05 AM EDT

Luap
It came up in a previous blog.  And many were displeased, to say the least.

I’m glad I did get to ride it while it was there, though…

What will become of the BTTF gift shop?

Posted by Cameron T. @ 08/27/2006 1:07 AM EDT

Back to the Future is closing?

Thats sad, but I guess it’s about that time.

I was born in 1980, so that movie has always been a part of me, but if you go back and watch it, the movie is getting pretty dated. I mean just the hassle of explaining to my kids (I don’t have any, but I speak of the future) what the hell a Delorean is. Well thats gonna be a pain in the ass. But it does make me sad to see so many things go the way of the Dodo.

Posted by Jester @ 08/27/2006 1:13 AM EDT

If anyone in NJ  goes to Monmouth Mall, you can get all those bootleg tos w/out going to China Town…thre is this kiosk sorta by the food court area, they sell the character backpacks and the korean 25 video games in one systems….I saw that fake power ranger Mr Incredible set….they want 10 bucks i think…i almsot got it last time i was there, just on a goof.

May I start a new Topic?  Which kind of virtual pet keychain did you have?  I had compu kitty, which got trashed when i went to Lancaster on Vacation back in 97, I also had Dink Dino…which is by FAR the best of them all…ou could feed it a million types of food, and dependng on which you fed them, they would grow diffrent, it could read and play games, and i forget what else..i eventually had tamogatchiand Nano Baby too

Posted by mandy_Reeves @ 08/27/2006 1:15 AM EDT

I never got into the whole virtual pet thing. It seemed like a pain in the ass to me, since I had a real dog and cat to take care of.

But my friend had one, she dropped it out of our boat when we went out on the lake. It was very odd to see someone cry over a keychain.

Posted by Imbecile. @ 08/27/2006 1:26 AM EDT

I never got a virtual pet either, though I kinda wanted one of those Pikachu ones that looked like mini game boys.  I have Nintendogs now, so it’s all good.

Posted by Cameron T. @ 08/27/2006 1:28 AM EDT

I had a tamogatchi that I never even opened until recently and I think that I had the Pikachu tamogatchi, never played with that one either. Meh, I finally got a dog so I don’t need no machine to car for. Other than my laptop, I love you laptop!

Posted by Darth Poop @ 08/27/2006 1:28 AM EDT

And by car I meant care, but you already knew that. Smart-ass…

Posted by Darth Poop @ 08/27/2006 1:30 AM EDT

I live in a swamp and it will be summer until about December or January. Then it will just be “cool.” However, “cool” to me is freezing, so I guess it works out ok.

Things used to be different, though. I remember having to wear Halloween costumes with long sleeves when I was a kid. Now it seems that Halloween is always a sweaty event. Stupid global warming.

Posted by GloomyJack @ 08/27/2006 2:09 AM EDT

Is that a trackback post???
Yup kb, I’ve seen it on the ground up in the mountains a few times, but I’ve never actually seen snow coming down and blanketing everything. In truth, I’m jealous of the whole white Christmas experience, but I could never deal with the reality of it.
Was back at the Chip and Dale “Nutty Wear” vending machine and I got the damn yam again! Luckily on the fourth try I got the super adorable “Chip in a strawberry cake” so I’m satisfied.

Posted by squee4242 @ 08/27/2006 2:12 AM EDT

I never had a virtual pet, though I did have that Tamagothi program on my computer a long time ago.

I haven’t seen Ghostbusters II (or the first one) in a really long time.  I do remember that I liked the part of GBII where they were controlling the Statue of Liberty with an NES Advantage.

And by reading the comments, I gather I’m not the only one who can’t fucking wait for summer to be over?  Is it me, or is each summer becoming worse than the one before?  I’ve got to find a cooler place to live.

Posted by Astro Zombie @ 08/27/2006 2:28 AM EDT

Mandy Yeah, we’re hiring n stuff.  We’ll probably be merching the store in the next week or two.  I haven’t been to the location yet but it’s supposedly on Brick Blvd.  Hit me up on Myspace (clickie my namie) and I’ll get back to you with some info when I get it about the Brick Store

Posted by WonKa @ 08/27/2006 2:39 AM EDT

I can’t remember much of GB II, but I do think I liked it. I haven’t ever had one of those virtual pets because I have 3 real (stinky) ones. ;-) I do remember some PC program called Dogz, I think? It let you raise a puppy on your desktop. I totally loved it, but I think the version I had was just shareware.. Booooo

I had a tamagotchi.  My mom bought it for me from QVC *before* they were available in stores in the US anywhere else.  I took it to school with me, in fact it went everywhere for about two weeks.  that made me quite “uncool” since I was in HS at the time and no one else was interested in stuff like Tamagotchis. The bloody thing would wake up and want to be fed at like 3 in the morning and then again at 6 and on one weekend whenI wanted to sleep late it started chirping around 9 too.  So I shoved it under my pillow and when i finally woke up that afternoon and checked on it…  it had grown wings and was flying to heaven.  Yah it died of hunger or something.  Maybe it was sitting in its own feces for too long.  Who knows.  I shoved it in a box and never looked back after that.

Hey everyone,

I’m a constant lurker and first time poster on this here SNT/sunday morning blog. Just wanted to say Hey and stuff..

Ghostbusters II is my favorite movie of all time. I think it’s because of my childhood crush on Egon. The first Ghostbusters was awesome, but I guess the second one is my fave because I saw it in theaters.

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area and we complain around here if it gets below 60 degrees during “wintertime”. Guess I’m spoiled, huh?

I know I’m totally posting like hours after everyone went to bed and forgot about all this crap.. but oh well. Meanwhile, I work in radio and I have to listen to Kelly Clarkson and Five for Fighting and all this top 40 crap right now… in a few hours I get to play some 80s so I’m excited. Hope I don’t offend any Kelly Clarkson fans.. haha.

I feel so much better after losing my blog posting virginity. Yay.

Welcome to the blog Dj Lisas. Just a heads up, what ever you do, don’t mention Robert Walpole, makes Matt go crazy, starts eating the carpet and punching people in the throat. Other than that, it’s all good.

Posted by Darth Poop @ 08/27/2006 11:57 AM EDT

haha Thanks Darth!! I will keep that in mind, no Walpole. Gotcha. We don’t wanna make The Matt angry.

Hey djlisa!  Welcome!  I just looked at your page…those pepsi ads are amazing.

Anyone else watching the emmy’s tonight?  I am slightly stoked about seeing the cast of The Office on the red carpet.  And of course I am hopeful that they’ll get a win.

Posted by kb @ 08/27/2006 12:05 PM EDT

Yeah I saw that Pepsi ad and I just had to put it on my page. Nothing screams 90s like designer Pepsi cans.

I may watch the Emmys tonight.. if I have to play another commercial for the Emmys here I’m going to scream though. You guys think sometimes commercials are annoying? Try playing the same ones for 6 hours straight. I can’t fall asleep without hearing a Geico commercial embedded in my brain.  And yes sometimes we do pump up the volume just to make them even louder. Hee hee. Man posting on here is becoming addicting. I love it.

Posted by dj lisas` @ 08/27/2006 1:07 PM EDT

Hi and welcome dj lisa! West coast represent!
kb, since Lost got the best drama snub I hadn’t really thought to actually watch the award show. It might be worth watching if The Office wins but nowadays Conan annoys me as much as he used to delight so I don’t know that I can sit through the whole show.
Have you guys seen the new version of Wonka in the candy commercials? Ugggleeeee!

Posted by squee4242 @ 08/27/2006 2:00 PM EDT

Cameron T: Your Texas seasons sound nearly identical to ours here in Florida. I hate it. I also marched in high school, and it really was Hell on Earth. Not having a fall is cruel, it’s my favorite season.

As for Back to the Future, it was never a favorite ride of mine, probably because it made me throw up when I was ten. Still kinda sad to see it go though, and whatever they put up in its place better be good.

Posted by jazzy @ 08/27/2006 2:51 PM EDT

Dj lisas: i used to work in radio so i know all about the commercials that make you go crazy.  Some of the jingles i can still sing even now… six years later.  The Hooters ads were especially annoying too.  I ran the boards for sports games usually so was spared the awful top 40 stuff…and it was a country station anyway but yea I feel for ya.

*over in the corner, cackling, waiting for Hallowe’en*

Posted by kingklash @ 08/27/2006 3:40 PM EDT

Those tamagotchi/virtual pet things were the bane of camp counselors everywhere. I had like 10 kids in my group that had them and brought them to camp. At 5 years old. We wound up watching them as well. Too bad we didn’t get tipped for taking care of them. Finally there was a ban on them at the camp because it was getting insane.

That cured any urge I have had to buy one.

They’re getting rid of Back to the future, the ride? Why? And what’s going there instead?
I actually liked it at both Universal Orlando and Hollywood.

Ghostbusters 2: Not a bad movie, sequels usually are worse than the original. But there are far worse out there that I’ve sat through or been dragged too. Egon was kinda cute but in that group of actors it was slim pickings.

Posted by Angelcake @ 08/27/2006 5:03 PM EDT

Some sort of “Fast & the Furious” thing is taking the place of “Back to the Future”….that should be worthwhile ;)

Posted by Shuanfu @ 08/27/2006 5:20 PM EDT

Not sure if anyone in my hometown will be wathching he Emmy’s tonight…we’re all waiting for the LL World Series here in Columbus!!!  It’s been in a rain delay for 2 hours with no sign of letting up, but we’ll be up all night to watch our guys if we have to!

Posted by Shuanfu @ 08/27/2006 5:31 PM EDT

as much as I enjoy Fast and the Furious on a big, dumb, fun level I seriously doubt 20 years from now people will care like we still do Back to the Future. Still I hear rumours they are making a fourth FatF movie so the franchise won’t be outdated until at least 2008-2009

Posted by mrjayberry @ 08/27/2006 7:35 PM EDT

The Fast and the Furious? Eww.

I’d much rather ride Back to the Future than any Fast and the Furious thing, even BTTF made me throw up ;)
