08/20/2006: August Megaparty #20: Battery Fun!

When I bought my latest digital camera, it came with a charger and four rechargeable batteries. For whatever reason, I decided to pretend that the camera didn’t come with these things, and have been purchasing regular AA batteries since Day 1. I realize that this behavior could only be defined as “stupid.” If I tallied up all the money spent on batteries these past few years, there’d be enough in the might-have-been pot to get me on a three-day vacay to Tahiti. Or a reasonable simile of Tahiti.

I don’t have any real preference when it comes to batteries. I usually just buy whatever I see first, except in special cases, namely when a battery company runs a promotion involving hot free gifts in each pack. This is a more typical trend than you non-battery buyers might think. I just got back from Target a little while ago, and I saw everything from baby-sized flashlights to tiny soccer balls to Lightning McQueen figures given out free in specially marked packs. The freebies aren’t always enough to sway me in a certain direction, but tonight, one was…

Hells yes, thanks maam, I think I will take you up on this free wind-up Energizer Bunny offer. My sixteen shiny Energizer batteries are good until 2013, but that damn bunny, I’ll keep him till 2020, easy.

Course, you should be buying batteries based on how good they are, and with that train of thought, I must recommend Energizer’s “Lithium” collection. They’re pricey as fuck, but they totally pay for themselves: When we went to Disney World, I lasted the entire trip on two batteries, and that accounts for over 800 pictures and about 50 movies. Sno joke.

I would’ve bought the Lithiums again, but alas, they didn’t come with wind-up Energizer Bunnies.

It keeps going and going and going and making this funky noise that sounds like a swarm of pissed off bees ready to attack and going and going and blah blah blah blah.

So I find I have nothing to contribute to the battery conversation;

But the mention if Disney World reminds me: I’m going down there with my family next week and I’d love to hear if anyone has any favorite out-of-the-way spots or cool things that regular folks might not know about.

Someone else here reads Pratchett and Gaiman? Not too surprising, but pleasant nonetheless. :)

Not that this has any relevance to chronology, but I thought that “Thief of Time” was a very well-written book. It’s not a bad place to start, assuming you’re not too overly concerned about trying to figure out the sequence of novels.

Hey, Matt, I too have bought Energizer batteries with free goodies inside the packages: one was a little toy car, and one was a combo, whistle compass that looks like a fat battery. Had some kind of promo tie in with Survivor I think….

I’ll be damned if I ever buy a book written by Orson Scott Card.

H-ha! people do naughty things with batteries!

I haven’t done it with batteries, but I have bought things I wouldn’t have because of what I got with it. Like a box of Total cereal that had a Barney Miller DVD in it. I am addicted to that opening bass line.

bummmm ba-ba-bummm ba-da-dummm ba-da-dumm-ba-da-da-da-dummm…..

“One day a DSM visited and told us to get rid of the rack because KB hates anything that might improve sales.”
A truer statement there has never been. I used to work at KB myself.

Kaga: as a fellow KB employee, my store’s currently last in its district in battery sales, and the Bunny still proudly sits on top of its battery rack, and people are so fucking stupid that I have to tell them that they’re under the Energizer Bunny. I think we’re last because we no longer carry the incredibly cheap Eveready batteries, which were like $1.50 per 8 pack, and we now just sell the Energizer Gouging Batteries, where a same 8 pack would set you back 6 bucks.

And I agree about the tiny Aslan snowglobe package, that was ugly/unecessary as hell. At least the Cars promotion had the little figures actually be able to do something.

Energizer bunny! A robotic pink drumming rabbit in shades and blue sandles. The zenith of battery marketing, you better effing believe it. Or not, whatever, but I have a little bunny figure from the late 80s? early 90s? It lit up when squeezed, but has since been gutted and is now a hollow corpse of a plastic pink rabbit. So there’s that.
