August Megaparty #19: Grizzly Chomps!

Of course, on the day the blog gets its revamp, the entire site experiences massive technical issues leading to no-load errors across the board. Way to turn my punch to piss, stupid Technical Issue Gods. These problems should be under control soon; you may hit some snags here and there as we test different fixes. Bleh. Enjoy your very first non-Greymatter Saturday Night Thread.

In the wake of the great Choco-Dile hunt, I've made a hobby of gathering up information on hard-to-find/discontinued Hostess treats, because such info comes in handy at social gatherings and client luncheons. From Choco-Bliss devil cakes to spotted "Tiger Tail" Twinkies, the world of Hostess is one filled with as many forgotten treats and mascot characters as snacks still on the shelves. Here's another, and I challenge you to find one more obscure."Grizzly Chomps" arrived in the early 90's, which was an interesting era for kid-related marketing endeavors. Companies and their chosen ad agencies weren't quite over the gaudy cheese of 80's kid marketing, but with the rise of the Ninja Turtles and a major upswing in the surfer/skater/blader/cooldude department, everything became forcibly "hip" to the highest degree. From asinine lingo to every graphic needing to look like a lazy Trapper Keeper design, nothing was safe from these terrible new ideas about what kids were made of -- not even Hostess snack cakes.

What I'm getting at is, Grizzly Chomps was a brand of sprinkled cupcakes fronted by a bear, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, who dances and snowboards. I CAN RELATE TO THIS!

The cupcakes were fat free, and while that was a plus for parents buying lunchbox-fillers for their kids, it also meant that Grizzly Chomps didn't taste as amazing as most other cupcake brands. Hostess needed some big time gimmicks if they wanted children to get past that. A television commercial starring the bear version of Rude Dog helped, but the strategy went even deeper. The cupcakes were each "personally tested" by ol' Grizzly himself, meaning that each cupcake came with a big bite already taken out of it. This technically meant that we got less cake per cup, but that's still a pretty cool gimmick.

Between that and the addition of enough calorie-free rainbow sprinkles to turn any mouth into Vegas, Grizzly Chomps almost had enough gusto to stay with us for the long haul. Almost. Click here to download the Grizzly Chomps commercial.

Final Fantasy (The modern era ones) is a CGI anime, but inbetween each scene you have to go through a bunch of stupid shit, like “fighting” through menus. It’s not a game, because there’s no skill whatsoever involved.
Super Smash Brothers Melee is one of the best videoGAMES ever made.
That alone pretty much means Wii will be a better buy than PS3. The fact that Wii costs FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS LESS is the nail in Sony’s coffin.

Huh. Looks like a missed out on a pretty splendid SNT thread, including a video game discussion revolving around games you don’t need to put a quarter in, because I was too busy playing Civ IV. I would call that ironic, but that poor word’s taken way too much abuse from the world lately. Ah, well. I refuse to call any period of time spent drinking Guinness and bribing a bunch of imaginary Turks to beat up a bunch of imaginary Frenchmen a complete loss.

I saw SOAP last night, with 10 friends. Tell your idiot friends they NEED to see this movie. It not only lives up the hype, it surpasses it!

Note to self for later: Read the rest of the atlantic city articles, the smores article, the Vending Machine Toys articles, worst game room ever article, comic book ads article(s).
Goodnight everyone.

Super Smash Bros Melee is an overhyped piece of garbage. yeah its cool playing as the Nintendo characters but other than that gimmick its just a standard dumbed down fighting game with the Big N gloss over it. I would much rather play Soul Caliber or Guilty Gear or even Tekken.

I am dying for Final Fantasy XII… October cannot get here soon enough for me. Okami is coming out next month and everyone should atleast try that… an adventure game with gorgeous graphics and you get to play as a goddess/wolf to help change/shape the world and help people. The dungeons have been compared to Zelda and thats nothing but a good thing.

No fangirl of any particular system here. I will eventually have all the next gen systems but right now am still plowing through a multitude of games for the PS2/GC/xbox/ds/psp and more on the horizon for those (God of War 2, Okami, FFXII, Valkyrie Profile 2, etc etc).

First day of HS? i walked across the street… with a friend of mine who showed up at my house that morning cos he was nervous about starting school. So we walked across and looked for our lockers, etc before school had started and were informed we werent supposed to be in the building yet (huh?) and other bullshiat. Oh well.. it wasnt horrid but HS in general was.

I don’t remember much of my first day of High School, my blog doesn’t go back that far.

Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 08/20/2006 1:27 PM

My mom switched me from public to Catholic school for high school, so I was sure I could reinvent myself from the nerdy, braces-wearing puffy-haired girl into some really popular awesome person. I wore a white shirt, pleated skirt, mary janes, knee socks…and found out that everyone else just wore tan pants and button-down shirts that had patterns on them, and that I still had puffy hair and braces. Not to mention that my already large nose was growing faster than the rest of my face.

I didn’t make any friends until 10th grade.

Watching Rocky Horror this morning because I wanted to compare it fairly to Shock Treatment…there’s no contest. Even if you adjust for the Tim Curry factor, Rocky just has way more charm. Shock Treatment works better as a proper satire (Rocky is really just a love letter to sci fi and smut and rock and roll, isn’t it?) but it’s missing too much humor and the songs are nothing special. Not that anyone is interested in my opinion, but there it is.
I’m a button smasher, so I have no problem with Smash Bros being dumbed down. I like a game where I actually stand a chance against real gamers.

I think this SNT went well into sunday, anyways I remember my first day of high school, i walked around not knowing where any of my classes were and at lunch the table me and friends were sitting at got over run by big mean sophomores! hahah so i had to get my senior sister and her friends to scare them away. All in all i pretty much loved high school, i know youre supposed to like hate it and not let it define who you are, but i thought it was pretty awesome…college is better though. other notes:
IHAQ: your baby is super cute!
Mystie: Hope youre feeling better! I usually go shopping when something is bothering me, getting new stuff always makes me feel better haha

happy sunday!

Man, my first day of high school was like 16 years ago so I don’t remember much. I do know that I got a new spiked haircut after having no hair style for my whole grade school/middle school experience and everyone seemed shocked to see it. Other than that it was not as bad as my time in middle school but it wasn’t all great either. It had it’s moments.

Chestnuts roasted by Bob K @ 08/20/2006 2:37 PM

Yeah, I’m such a girl, going shopping to cheer myself up. I was wandering around Target for like half an hour. Then I plopped down over at Barnes and Noble and scribbled in my notebook for the rest of the evening. I’ll have to do some online shopping, though. I didn’t spend nearly enough.

Awesome. It sounds like something that belongs on a bumper sticker, or some snarky black t-shirt from Hot Topic.

Man, too bad I missed SNT, but I was at my boyfriend’s brother’s wedding. That was a good time, though- a druken family dance, as hick as you can possibly imagine.

Mystie, don’t feel bad- I often get a real sense of accomplishment from shopping, like when I find a second hand cool shirt for a buck, or season one of ‘Futurama’ for $17.00. Never got into the online shopping, though. I’m scared to start, honestly.

Can’t wait to see SOAP! And I am glad the blog picked ‘Bill and Ted’ – God, I love those movies.

My High School time was a blur of “Just get me the hell outta here!” broken up by the Smoke Bomb Incident, being late for my graduation, and the fact that I understand math like Bucky Katt understands world events. Never went to college, I was pre-burnout. Not bad for a gifted student.

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 08/20/2006 3:06 PM

I, too, do not really remember my first day of high school. I was probably pretty nervous about being there, because I went to a school with a large number of students (which grew larger every year). Also, most of the people I knew in middle school were in the magnet program in high school and I wasn’t, so although I would see them around campus, I pretty much lost touch with them.

It’s funny how sometimes you don’t really know things about your high school friends. A year ago last March, I ran into a friend in a bookstore who I hadn’t seen since graduation (June 2003), and he told me he was gay, and had known it since ninth grade. He said he stayed in the closet through high school because he “didn’t want to be any lower on the social ladder.” My friend had stayed in touch with a mutual friend we had in middle school (he went to a different high school than we did), but that friendship basically ended when my friend came out, as our other friend was a Mormon and did not approve.

Why am I not surprised that Kid Nicky does not understand or appreciate the joy of modern RPGs? I mean if he can’t see the relevence of In the Garage, well then I’m not surprised at or concerned about anything he has to say.

For those of you keeping up with the Feed on G4, it has been confirmed that there will be a Wii “exercise” game. I kinda knew all along that the Wii was a plot to get fat kids off the couch. Well, I think I’ll pay my 600 dollars and stay on my fat arse, thank you very much. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 08/20/2006 3:25 PM

I’ll admit, the Wii has some pretty good games in their lineup, but I just can’t bring myself to buy it, with that… remote type controller thing! :\ And there are other reasons too, that I won’t divulge here because I will probably get flamed. Let’s just say I’m a Sony Loyalist (except for the DS) and love their line of games much more.

I’ll get a PS3 someday, but definitely not when they first come out.

Does anyone here have/play Animal Crossing for the DS and have WiFi capabilities? I seriously need someone to come to my town and buy something so Nook’s store can finally get bigger. I just don’t trust random strangers on the AC website. Heh, yeah I know you guys are strangers, in a sense, but I trust you guys not to trample my flowers and cut down all my trees. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 08/20/2006 3:44 PM

I can’t help with Animal Crossing, but apparently there is a Mognet function in III (like the one in IX) that allows you to send letters over your WiFi connection. If that has some in-game relevance besides just being able to send messages with your DS, hit me up come September Ryane :)

Dammit, Kneg (haha), I come on to lambaste you and I miss you by two hours! I’ll get you later…..with my fist!

Holy shit, Matt! I’d forgotten all about Grizzly Chomps and then, as always, good ‘ol X-E triggers my memory banks and helps bring to the forefront something I hadn’t thought about in almost fifteen years. These things were the prized delicacy of my lunchbox for quite a while.

Video games are just one of those things you can’t talk about anywhere on the internet.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/20/2006 6:30 PM

Can I talk about G4 on the internet?
We just got cable again, and once again I am subjected to the horror that is G4. It was bad at first, but now it’s just lame. It isn’t even about games most of the time, and when it is it’s just like lame remnants of shows that sucked in the first place.
