August Megaparty #19: Grizzly Chomps!

Of course, on the day the blog gets its revamp, the entire site experiences massive technical issues leading to no-load errors across the board. Way to turn my punch to piss, stupid Technical Issue Gods. These problems should be under control soon; you may hit some snags here and there as we test different fixes. Bleh. Enjoy your very first non-Greymatter Saturday Night Thread.

In the wake of the great Choco-Dile hunt, I've made a hobby of gathering up information on hard-to-find/discontinued Hostess treats, because such info comes in handy at social gatherings and client luncheons. From Choco-Bliss devil cakes to spotted "Tiger Tail" Twinkies, the world of Hostess is one filled with as many forgotten treats and mascot characters as snacks still on the shelves. Here's another, and I challenge you to find one more obscure."Grizzly Chomps" arrived in the early 90's, which was an interesting era for kid-related marketing endeavors. Companies and their chosen ad agencies weren't quite over the gaudy cheese of 80's kid marketing, but with the rise of the Ninja Turtles and a major upswing in the surfer/skater/blader/cooldude department, everything became forcibly "hip" to the highest degree. From asinine lingo to every graphic needing to look like a lazy Trapper Keeper design, nothing was safe from these terrible new ideas about what kids were made of -- not even Hostess snack cakes.

What I'm getting at is, Grizzly Chomps was a brand of sprinkled cupcakes fronted by a bear, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, who dances and snowboards. I CAN RELATE TO THIS!

The cupcakes were fat free, and while that was a plus for parents buying lunchbox-fillers for their kids, it also meant that Grizzly Chomps didn't taste as amazing as most other cupcake brands. Hostess needed some big time gimmicks if they wanted children to get past that. A television commercial starring the bear version of Rude Dog helped, but the strategy went even deeper. The cupcakes were each "personally tested" by ol' Grizzly himself, meaning that each cupcake came with a big bite already taken out of it. This technically meant that we got less cake per cup, but that's still a pretty cool gimmick.

Between that and the addition of enough calorie-free rainbow sprinkles to turn any mouth into Vegas, Grizzly Chomps almost had enough gusto to stay with us for the long haul. Almost. Click here to download the Grizzly Chomps commercial.

I love internal Server Errors. No, really. It’s like getting crabs after being cured of AIDS. I’ll refresh you away. You’re so cute!!!

I have no recollection of these at all. They look pretty nasty is you ask me, and I’m a chick that would eat almost anything chocolate.

Kneg, I’m gonna go with he masses and say Bill and Ted for sure!(If you haven’t started a movie yet) I’m kinda jealous now. Remember, God gave rock and roll to you!

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 08/19/2006 10:32 PM

hmm they look like they would taste just like those zebra cakes

well except for the chocolate vanilla thing…

Alright, Bogus Journey it is. For those of you who haven’t seen or were hating on Trainspotting and Hackers, please do yourself a favor and either watch them, or give them a second chance. All three are personal favs, and damn good movies to boot.

Long Live Johny Lee Miller!

He looks more like a freaking wombat than a grizzly.

Chestnuts roasted by Mystie @ 08/19/2006 10:41 PM

I mispelled Jonny :(

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 08/19/2006 10:41 PM

Bah, the only type of prepackaged snack cakes I like are zingers.

Chestnuts roasted by Reid @ 08/19/2006 10:49 PM

Hackers? Sorry Kneg, that’s not a movie that’s going to grow on me.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/19/2006 10:50 PM

Hackers brought us a young Matthew Lillard and to a lesser degree of importance, Angelina Jolie. Plus I’ve always been a sucker for hacker culture and/or cyberpunk in general. I’m a Matrix nut, remember? Just be lucky I didn’t put Johnny Mnemonic on the list :)

Anyone remember the game Shadowrun for the SNES? The new 360/PC endeavor has turned into something with mystics. Blasphemy!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 08/19/2006 11:04 PM

Yeah, Grizzly B! Was Hostess making some half-assed attepmt to cash in on the “Yo Yogi” craze? ‘Cuz, er, I don’t think that was much of craze to begin with.
But Grizzly B was building bridges between cultures; finally, snowboarders and hip-hoppers could come together in peace. And eat chocolate.

Chestnuts roasted by Commander Awesome @ 08/19/2006 11:08 PM

Yeah I’ve seen what they did to Shadowrun. I thought it was a genesis game originally though.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/19/2006 11:14 PM

I have no recollection of these.
That’s all I got.
Oh, I loved Hackers too.

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 08/19/2006 11:17 PM

It was on Genesis as well.

Hackers is awesomely bad.

New Super Mario Bros feels fantastically nostalgic, and there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a blast.

I’m playing Trauma Center right now and it’s exactly the sort of game that makes the DS so kick ass. Labectomy + bomb defusal + crazy storyline + a dab of hot nurse = awesome.

Chestnuts roasted by Travis @ 08/19/2006 11:26 PM

I finished getting all 3 stars by my file on New Super Mario Bros. this morning. The final background for the bottom screen you can unlock is just too kick ass.

I wish I knew what everyone was talking about :( how about a survey on what happened the first day of high school?

For me the fist day sucked ass, I almost missed my bus and had to chase it down. Then when I got to school I was’nt feeling well, and as I was talking to my new classmates I puked all over the floor! Later in the week I got called into the nurses office and she accused me of being bulimic. Thank god I was only there for one year. The next year I went to the school that all my friends went to.

I’d probably go with Bill and Ted also. Of course, I’ve been in a comedy movie sort of mood lately so that’s mainly why. I’ve seen Trainspotting once and although it’s a weird movie, I liked it. I never saw Hackers but that one’s on my list of movies I need to see but have never gotten around to yet list.

On a side note, I bought the DVD box set of He-Man Season 2 Volume 1 tonight. Of course, I haven’t finished watching the first two box sets yet but I made the mistake of not picking up the GI Joe ones except the first volume when they first came out and now they are discontinued and cost like over $70.00 or more on eBay or the Amazon zShops. I’m not making that mistake again. Buy the ones I want while they are still widely available. I still curse myself for never picking up that Jem DVD Box Set when I saw it at Best Buy when it first came out. Now they’re like over $100.00 to get now. Ugh…

I’d buy Dirge of Cerberus as well, but there is scuttle butt that gaming stores are gonna take Wii pre orders starting after the 23 cause of that Nintendo Leipzig Germany press conference where they are gonna announce the launch and price i beleive. I need to put a deposit down so i can get one at launch. Trauma Center is a GREAT DS game! have ya tried Pheonix Wright? fucking awesome as well! There is a Wii version of Trauma center scheduled soon after launch.

First day of High School? Band Camp. Up frickin early, bed frickin late. For a week. I don’t even remember my first day after that.

Reading this makes me remember that I have not seen Bogus Journey in AGES, and that I do not have the movie on DVD. This is a situation that needs to be remedied. Sadly, I don’t have the funds right now, with TaleSpin, The Wizard, and Star Fox: Command on the list in the next two weeks.

And I’ve never seen these cupcake thingys.

Oh…Just got back from Snakes on a Plane. It’s AWESOME. Most X-E’ers will probably love it.

The very very first day of school? I got yelled at for standing on the grass about 20 times. I had a large yard with nicely cut grass all my life and always played on it so I just couldn’t get used to not standing on it for that first day.

It was the first day of my second year of school that ruined my entire school career. I freaked out the first day when my mom dropped me off and cried big time. I was bullied all that year for it and was an outcast till around 6th grade. From there I just had shitty friends up to freshman where I had no friends up to Junior year where I had a different batch of shitty friends up to senior where I got some cooler friends that I saw about 2 times or less after I graduated.

One embarrassing moment and your dead. Kids are such little fucking punks.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/20/2006 12:04 AM

Um, first day wasn’t really all that bad at all. Highschool was an amazingly good time for me, despite what you all know about me and would assume about how it would be.

That was 10 years ago. Jeez I feel old. In related news, I have to say that I’m very excited to be starting classes Monday. This will be my 7th year in college. I am Droz, I am Van Wilder.

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 08/20/2006 12:08 AM

See I read that 10 times, but I still didn’t see it say “high” school.

Freshman High school for me was entirely uneventful.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/20/2006 12:11 AM

Kneg, your like Crawl from Son-in-law!

I just wanted to post again to see if my link thingy worked, so I could show off my son.

Sorry I’m late all…My frat held its annual booze cruise tonight and it was cah-razzzy I only had 2 drinks 3 hours ago, I swear!

If this still applies, I’d pick Bogus Journey cemented in New Super Mario Bros with a heaping helping of fried eggs.
