August Megaparty #19: Grizzly Chomps!

Of course, on the day the blog gets its revamp, the entire site experiences massive technical issues leading to no-load errors across the board. Way to turn my punch to piss, stupid Technical Issue Gods. These problems should be under control soon; you may hit some snags here and there as we test different fixes. Bleh. Enjoy your very first non-Greymatter Saturday Night Thread.

In the wake of the great Choco-Dile hunt, I've made a hobby of gathering up information on hard-to-find/discontinued Hostess treats, because such info comes in handy at social gatherings and client luncheons. From Choco-Bliss devil cakes to spotted "Tiger Tail" Twinkies, the world of Hostess is one filled with as many forgotten treats and mascot characters as snacks still on the shelves. Here's another, and I challenge you to find one more obscure."Grizzly Chomps" arrived in the early 90's, which was an interesting era for kid-related marketing endeavors. Companies and their chosen ad agencies weren't quite over the gaudy cheese of 80's kid marketing, but with the rise of the Ninja Turtles and a major upswing in the surfer/skater/blader/cooldude department, everything became forcibly "hip" to the highest degree. From asinine lingo to every graphic needing to look like a lazy Trapper Keeper design, nothing was safe from these terrible new ideas about what kids were made of -- not even Hostess snack cakes.

What I'm getting at is, Grizzly Chomps was a brand of sprinkled cupcakes fronted by a bear, wearing a Hawaiian shirt, who dances and snowboards. I CAN RELATE TO THIS!

The cupcakes were fat free, and while that was a plus for parents buying lunchbox-fillers for their kids, it also meant that Grizzly Chomps didn't taste as amazing as most other cupcake brands. Hostess needed some big time gimmicks if they wanted children to get past that. A television commercial starring the bear version of Rude Dog helped, but the strategy went even deeper. The cupcakes were each "personally tested" by ol' Grizzly himself, meaning that each cupcake came with a big bite already taken out of it. This technically meant that we got less cake per cup, but that's still a pretty cool gimmick.

Between that and the addition of enough calorie-free rainbow sprinkles to turn any mouth into Vegas, Grizzly Chomps almost had enough gusto to stay with us for the long haul. Almost. Click here to download the Grizzly Chomps commercial.

I remember these but I don’t remember them having sprinkles.

Mmmm, fat free cupcakes!(?)

Chestnuts roasted by Justin @ 08/19/2006 7:51 PM

I remember really wanting these things as a kid.

Chestnuts roasted by mudogramx @ 08/19/2006 7:51 PM

We got those a couple of times. They were “fun” to eat because of the appearance and what not, but they were unfulfilling. Being fat-free, a lot of the chocolatey goodness was lost. I still shoved them in my mouth, but only for about a month. Afterall, I still had Little Debbie.

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/19/2006 7:55 PM

I vaguely remember these, but I don’t think we ever bought any. We too had Little Debbie, so we were happy little kids. I’ve posted a few times in the past, but I’ve never actually made it on a Saturday night (I’ve always had to work), so I had to post something. Tonight I quit my crappy Wal-Mart job!

Chestnuts roasted by earthwormgoddess @ 08/19/2006 8:02 PM

Man, I used to have those all the time! Okay, so technically they were just knockoff chocolate cupcakes, but I was the youngest child, so I never actually got one without a bite taken out of it. I just didn’t know it was cool until now.

Chestnuts roasted by Jedoc @ 08/19/2006 8:06 PM

I don’t remember these at all, but just thought I’d say congratulations to earthwormgoddess for quitting a crappy job! Hooray! P.S. I hope you have something else lined up and don’t end up checking X-E from a homeless shelter sometime soon…

So, we’re back and it’s time to engage in a tradition held over from the dark days of balls and shaft. Eh, close enough. Here are the choices, you make my Saturday Night.

Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey
Trainspotting
Hackers

Input please :)

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 08/19/2006 8:07 PM

Even though I helped compile those, I’m going to go with my least-likely choice of Bogus Journey. Yeah yeah, I picked a Keanu, don’t wet yourself, Kneg!

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/19/2006 8:11 PM

INTERNAL SERVER ERROR. I mean Bill and Ted.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/19/2006 8:13 PM

I remember those things!!I never liked the notion that a bear took a bite outta everyone.EWW BEAR GERMS!

Chestnuts roasted by Agent M @ 08/19/2006 8:13 PM

We never had these either. Infact, I never saw them until about 4 minutes ago.

I loved Bill and Ted, and I still do. I don’t think I ever saw Trainspotting, and Hackers, oh my, I don’t even KNOW how many times I’ve seen that. :o

I bought Dirge of Cerberus a few hours ago. I’ve been waiting for this game forever, and then it comes out on the 15th and I WAS NOT INFORMED! >:( But, thanks to Matt’s ads here on the blog, I found out late last night it was released. Yay for Matt having some cool ads! :)

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 08/19/2006 8:25 PM

I haven’t played Dirge yet, but I picked it up. And I tried out the tutorial mode, not because I’ve never played an action game, but because you get to play as Vincent the Turk. Love the Turks with an unholy passion. Seems pretty smooth as far as gameplay. Week after next is Xenosaga Ep. III and Halloween is XII. But you know that Ryane :)

Working on Kingdom Hearts right now, which is why I can’t play Dirge yet. Yes, I’m late on KH, sue me, sue me, sue me.

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 08/19/2006 8:29 PM

I haven’t popped the game in yet, but I probably will in about a half hour. :D I’ve loved Vincent from the moment his coffin was opened. hehe!

Ohh, I hope you mean KH’s II? If not, and even so, I won’t sue you. I never got to finish the first one, although I’m like, RIGHT there… I just can’t beat Riku as Ansem. :( And on the 2nd one, I got totally frustrating trying to beat Demyx and his stupid water attacks! :’( I’ve been thinking about starting it over, just to try to level up more before I get to him, but, geeze, I dunno. I gotta get back into it, anyway. Today is the first day of my vacation! :D

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 08/19/2006 8:36 PM

Dernit, I wanted to be first. Couldn’t post. Sigh. I don’t remember these. Then again admitting that could be showing my age.

Chestnuts roasted by Kat @ 08/19/2006 8:37 PM

Great, not only are the cup cakes fat free but some ass hole bear already took a bite out of ‘em. A bit of bear spit in every bite! No thank you Mr. Grizzly, I don’t care if you distance your self from what bear society deems as acceptable behavior.

And a big congrats to earthwormgoddess for sticking it to the man.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 08/19/2006 8:39 PM

No, I mean the original. I just sealed Traverse Town. I stopped playing when I was in college. So I had to play IX, X, XI, and Eps. I & II (Which I did). And then I finally realized that I had to play Kingdom Hearts, I mean how could I not? Boreanez is a startling good pick for Leon (Squall), I was so afraid about that. Love the game though.

Squall and Cloud fighting together? Just as good as Billie Joe and Elvis Costello (see my post in the last thread).

Chestnuts roasted by Knegative @ 08/19/2006 8:43 PM

I totally remember those! in fact i was thinking about them the other day and trying to explain to a friend, which resulted in me getting stared at like i was crazy! i knew i didnt just make them up! Sadly my mom never bought stuff like this for my lunch…oh well seeing as how they are fat free and i never eat anything fat free (whats the point?) i guess i wasnt missing much.

Slightly related: speaking of describing things, im pretty sure someone has mentioned this before but this website really is one of the hardest things to try to explain to someone whos never been here. Im afraid my explanation just didnt do it justice.

And also i think this might be my first SNT!!! yay! although its only really the afternoon where im at. oh well, still counts

Chestnuts roasted by Katella @ 08/19/2006 8:50 PM

Yay for you Katella, and yay for me–this is my first SNT too!!! All day I’ve been a little more excited about it than I probably should be, but I’m usually either not home or someone else is hogging the computer.

Unfortunately, I dont really play video games, and I dont remember those bear cupcake things either. What to do, what to do.

MATT! I JUST WATCHED THE BEST/WORST DVD! “Deer Woman”
http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=70050138&trkid=189530&strkid=1666540373_0_0
Any horror flick with this in it must be great, right?

Knegative, go with Bill and Ted. I actually liked that better than the first one. You can’t go wrong with Death in a rock band.

Only have very vague memories of these. Hostess cupcakes were far from the forefront of my agendas in the early 90s. My mother was pestering me to lose weight, and it wouldn’t be by eating fat-free cupcakes. Besides, that whole “hip surfer dude” late 80s/early 90s thing looked far cooler on the Turtles and Bill and Ted.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 08/19/2006 9:24 PM

Happy SNT, everybody.

These Grizzly Chomps remind me of Mitch Hedberg’s bit about KitKat bars: “That candy has the words ‘Kit Kat’ stamped into it. THAT ROBS YOU OF CHOCOLATE! It is a clever chocolate-saving technique. I oughta go down the the factory. ‘Hey, you owe me some letters!’”

Ah, Mitch. RIP.

In other news, I played “New Super Mario Bros.” for about 20 minutes last night before my girlfriend’s asshole 10 year old nephew came down and reclaimed his DS. Let me tell you, that game is fucking sweet. Practically orgasmic…

Chestnuts roasted by kyle @ 08/19/2006 9:26 PM

I remember buying stuff like that based on the commercial because if they had an animated anything, be it bear or humpback whale selling the product, I would always buy the product because I didn’t want the animated mascot to get sad it’s product wasn’t selling and cry. I was such a wuss.

Chestnuts roasted by TC Falcon @ 08/19/2006 9:35 PM

Ok, I know it’s not cool to derail the SNT by talking about the actual post, but here goes. I would happily gain 20 pounds if they would just reissue ChocoBliss again. I LOVED those in the 80′s. Was absolutely crazy for em. Mmmm, chocobliss. I still remember the taste.

Chestnuts roasted by Terror Claws Cole @ 08/19/2006 10:00 PM

I also have to choose Bill & Ted. Never seen Hackers and I think Trainspotting is overrated. I have yet to make it all the way through. Iggy Pop’s “Lust for Life” ROCKS though.

I don’t remember Grizzley Chomps. But my favorite Hostess Snacks is something they put out every Halloween. It’s these little cookies that are shaped like pumpkins and taste like them too. Their face has this pumpkin flavored gel. DELICIOUS!
