August Megaparty #12: Great White Ice Pops!

I've only seen a few ice cream trucks all summer. I have no idea why, but the lack of trucks has forced my hand: If I want cold treats sure to induce brainfreezes, I must consult my local grocer's freezer section. I wish it didn't have to be that way, but at least the grocer supplies me with ice pops named after sharks.

From Popsicle, it's "Great White," a brand of ice pops that challenges us to find any real connection to sharks outside of the box art. They're just white ice pops, plain-shaped, and they have nothing to do with sharks unless you really use your imagination to give them a gray/white gradient, fins, eyes, gills, a tail, jaws and a bad attitude. Whatever, the box says they're sharks, and I'm more than happy to suspend disbelief if it's going to let me think I'm sucking on sharks.

The box says they're colorless, but they're not so much colorless as they are "not-dyed." Being not-dyed means that Popsicle can promote them as a "no mess" affair, much in the same way later incarnations of Hi-C Ecto-Cooler did away with our holy green in favor of a fruit juice that wouldn't stain the rug. I'm okay with the lack of color in this case; for one, a shark-inspired ice pop feels on-brand in white, and for two, at least I can eat the things without looking like a prison bitch afterwards. That shit stops being cute when you're too old to skirt the swift hand of justice with a Juvie sentence.

Aside from the usual collection of fun fruity flavors, some of the Great White pops are "mystery flavors." I'm all about mystery flavors, even when they suck. The gimmick was taught to me by Dum-Dum lollipops, and I've loved it ever since. Sometimes, "mystery flavors" are scams -- they're just the normally included flavors under a different label. Here, they're more special. The normal Great White flavors are cherry and orange, but the mystery flavor can be green apple, pineapple, watermelon or lemonade. There's more mystery flavors than regular flavors! I LOVE SHARKS!

Score one point for Popsicle and two points for sharks at large. I'm proud of my Great White ice pops and I can't wait to buy them birthday presents.

Oh, and this doubles as the Saturday Night Thread. For those new to the site, or to those who haven't been paying close attention, the "SNT" is essentially a directionless babble lounge for all of us stuck indoors on Saturday nights. Don't be scared to participate if you're not a "regular," because nobody here has a complex about their tenure, and everyone is totally welcoming of new faces (or names, I guess). I look at it like this: If you're just mindlessly browsing various sites for hours, the SNT makes a great pit stop throughout the day/night for those small bits of INTERACTIVE FUN that will help keep you sane.

I am so disappointed… I spent so much time, compiling all those links… sorting them out by date written… spacing them just right to make them pleasing to the eye… opening Notepad just to write it down…

Well I still love you, Toy Bulbasaur and various other Saurs… I STILL LOVE YOU DAMN IT!

Matt, your comment on prison bitches officially disturbs me. And that’s hard to do!

Thanks and I’ll post more once I recover and finish reading. God, that’s harsh. ;-)

Obviously, instead of clicking the link I posted to the Snakes On A Plane site, you should look for it to appear as the ad at the top of the page and click that. Click the other ads while you’re at it.
Missed it tonight, but I looked and apparently House IV is going to be airing on Thriller Max this week.

Ah, finally something colorless that dosen’t suck. I hate the Crayola color magic junk. It’s so hard to find real fingerpaints now days. Anyway, this is my post, because this is my first SNT. Even though it’s Sunday morning by now. Woof. I think I should go to bed soon. I’m not sure whether I’m looking forward to school starting or not.

I watched Final Destination 3 tonight. Pretty good movie but not as good as the first two.

Watching Action Jackson right now. Anybody ever see this cheeseball movie?

Hmm, the ad at the top is now for Disney…coincidence? I sure as hell hope so!

Was digging some racing movies today…Cannonball Run 2, and Gumball Rally. They are on a 2 for 1 disc I got at Hell-Mart. I also got one with Police Academy 2 & 3. I want to get the Neverending Story one, but it prob. won’t be as good as when I was a kid.

Never seen Action Jackson, but I LOVE "I’m Gonna Git You Sucka"!! The part with Chris Rock as the crackhead who wants "jus’ one rib" cracks me up evvery time!!

Just browed over to XE and realized while reading this post that yes, it is indeed Saturday night (I think I lost count of the days this week) and no, I have not yet participated in a SNT. So here it is, go me!

I noticed some posts above mentioning wikipedia. The Freddy article the other day started me on a long mosey through the slasher side of wikipedia. I leanred so much about NOES and Friday the 13th!

I just came back from work not too long ago. After reading various parts of the wikipedia article for Darkwing Duck, I am struck by what I had found: there were a number of inside jokes and references in various episodes that would’ve gone over the heads of the target audience. I think those of us who watched it as kids may find a new appreciation for it when it comes to DVD. I can only hope, for now.

I have nothing to say, just felt the need to post. I haven’t seen an ice cream truck in a long time. But I felt a pang for a tasty treat a couple weeks ago and stopped by the ol’ CFM (gas station). It stands for Convenient Food Mart, but my buddy Andy and myself always speak in code making up new names for it every time we plan to stop by. i.e. "Dude, you wanna stop by Crustacean Flap Mortuary?" etc. Anyways, I picked me up an M&M cookie ice cream sandwich thingie…freakin’ tasty. Plus, those things are pretty dang big. So, about two days after that I bought a bunch of Kroger brand ones at…uh…Kroger. That’s a grocery chain for you folks not in the know. Uh…ok, that’s it.

We need a personals section here. You people are way cooler than the locals!

Awake in the middle of the night… can’t fall asleep… gotta hit the SNT and say hi to the other insomniacs out there.

Pushing 4 in the morning here. I was supposed to go to some music fest tonight, but I couldn’t find it. There were not enough signs, plus it was dark. So I just came back home…maybe I’ll make it there tmrw.

Any "Freeway" fans out there? Anyone seen "Freeway 2: Confessions of a Trickbaby"? I just saw the "sequel" last night for the first time. It’s completley unrelated to the first one except:

1. Only one actor appeared in both movies, but as two different characters.

2. Same director.

3. At one point, someone watches TV, and the camera shows that "Freeway" is on the screen. Nothing mentioned about it in the plot. So maybe the dir. put it there for shits and giggles. :)

Who’s "Keno" in TMNT? I’m not sure if I could come up with 10 of the best non Turtle heroes, but I do know Leatherhead would be my #2 right after Casey. I guess April is number three, but I only really liked her in the comics, around the time Casey accidently killed that kid. It seemed like they were really fleshing out April, but I only really haphazadly followed Turtles around that time,so I don’t know how it turned out. Oh,and I liked how her action figure had a realistic .45! That was so cool because the TMNT’s world had all these badasses in it,and the girl reporter’s the only person with a gun.

MOVIE ALERT:
For all you Megapartiers who have Comcast Digital Cable, one of the FREE On Demand movie choices available right now is "It Came From Beneath the Sea". This is an AWESOME giant octopus movie from the 50′s. The special effects are by Ray Harryhausen (Clash of the Titans stop-motion guy) but they look way better than "Clash".

Chestnuts roasted by Kid Nicky @ 08/13/2006 7:32 AM

Those "shots" the kids are asking for, i think they mean those quiecscently(thats what the package says) frozen ice pop dots that come in a cup, and you can shake em into your mouth. Btw, i once went to the "Castle Dracula" site and ended up linking to the fan created amusement park sites, and this huge ass Great adventure site about the histoory and rides, all kinds of guide books, photos….stayed up til 4 am doing that.

I’m not sure whether I’m looking forward to school starting or not.

Hazzard, I’ve been in school for two weeks already. I started school on July 31. Lmfao, another reason why Florida sucks.

Chestnuts roasted by Brett @ 08/13/2006 12:32 PM

does anyone know if the mystery box is still available to buy?

Chestnuts roasted by bren @ 08/13/2006 12:56 PM

I was thinking the same thing bren. I remember when Matt first threw out that offer. I came across the page again last week. It does say that he’d never run out of them, but how many years ago was that?

What’s the verdict on that, Matt?

Chestnuts roasted by ColonelCatsup @ 08/13/2006 1:36 PM

Kid Nicky,
Keno is the ass-kicking pizza delivery boy from "Secret of the Ooze", a thoroughly forgettable character seeing as how he has to vie for screen time alongside Vanilla Ice and ten-foot-tall bipedal wolves.

"Did I mention I study martial arts?"

Chestnuts roasted by The Yeti @ 08/13/2006 1:51 PM

I started school on July 31

That’s crap. I’ve never heard of such a thing.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/13/2006 2:56 PM

Well, I had an interesting night- got harassed by some cops. So standing in a circle outdoors with friends automatically gives the cops the right to get out of their car and follow you with flashlights? Jeez.

I loved Keno.

My cousin used to drive and ice cream BIKE. I used to buy the Ninja turtle pops from him- the ones with the gumball eyes that Matt wrote about once. Good stuff.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 08/13/2006 3:04 PM

The actor who played Keno in TMNT 2 is currently hosting some reality show/martial arts competition on MTV2 called "Final Fu."

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 08/13/2006 3:16 PM

I didn’t know John Cena was Keno!

Chestnuts roasted by Tom @ 08/13/2006 3:25 PM

Is Clerks 2 safe to see with my dad? In other words, I watched Clerks 1 with him a few years ago and it was just bordering akward, would Clerks 2 push that?

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 08/13/2006 3:34 PM

I got back from Target a minute ago, has anyone seen those boxes of Count Chocula that have a huge, weird picture of just the Count’s face on the front? I’m disturbed by them.
