August Megaparty #12: Great White Ice Pops!

I've only seen a few ice cream trucks all summer. I have no idea why, but the lack of trucks has forced my hand: If I want cold treats sure to induce brainfreezes, I must consult my local grocer's freezer section. I wish it didn't have to be that way, but at least the grocer supplies me with ice pops named after sharks.

From Popsicle, it's "Great White," a brand of ice pops that challenges us to find any real connection to sharks outside of the box art. They're just white ice pops, plain-shaped, and they have nothing to do with sharks unless you really use your imagination to give them a gray/white gradient, fins, eyes, gills, a tail, jaws and a bad attitude. Whatever, the box says they're sharks, and I'm more than happy to suspend disbelief if it's going to let me think I'm sucking on sharks.

The box says they're colorless, but they're not so much colorless as they are "not-dyed." Being not-dyed means that Popsicle can promote them as a "no mess" affair, much in the same way later incarnations of Hi-C Ecto-Cooler did away with our holy green in favor of a fruit juice that wouldn't stain the rug. I'm okay with the lack of color in this case; for one, a shark-inspired ice pop feels on-brand in white, and for two, at least I can eat the things without looking like a prison bitch afterwards. That shit stops being cute when you're too old to skirt the swift hand of justice with a Juvie sentence.

Aside from the usual collection of fun fruity flavors, some of the Great White pops are "mystery flavors." I'm all about mystery flavors, even when they suck. The gimmick was taught to me by Dum-Dum lollipops, and I've loved it ever since. Sometimes, "mystery flavors" are scams -- they're just the normally included flavors under a different label. Here, they're more special. The normal Great White flavors are cherry and orange, but the mystery flavor can be green apple, pineapple, watermelon or lemonade. There's more mystery flavors than regular flavors! I LOVE SHARKS!

Score one point for Popsicle and two points for sharks at large. I'm proud of my Great White ice pops and I can't wait to buy them birthday presents.

Oh, and this doubles as the Saturday Night Thread. For those new to the site, or to those who haven't been paying close attention, the "SNT" is essentially a directionless babble lounge for all of us stuck indoors on Saturday nights. Don't be scared to participate if you're not a "regular," because nobody here has a complex about their tenure, and everyone is totally welcoming of new faces (or names, I guess). I look at it like this: If you're just mindlessly browsing various sites for hours, the SNT makes a great pit stop throughout the day/night for those small bits of INTERACTIVE FUN that will help keep you sane.

I bought the Atari Flashback 2 for my girlfriend at Christmas. I think we’ve played it less than 5 times. Kind of blah…

I have. To be honest, most of the games are best left as memories.

Man, it’s nice to be at an SNT again- it’s been awhile. I really am living out of my car, spending every night at a different friend’s house. It is awesome- we have a cooler in the trunk with food and drinks, plus a tent, sleeping bag, camping chairs, radio, etc etc. Anything you can think of really- we got it. I am loving this eternal road tripping, rent-free summer. I do miss the internet though.

Thanks Matt- I want a great white popsicle very very badly now. Any popsicle would do, I suppose- but I like that ‘no mess’ idea myself.

Squee- thanks for the info on the meteor shower! I hope I get some action ;0)

I went to Toys R Us today…I barely escaped without blowing a hundred bucks. My friend dragged me out. Thank god for him. Although, the ‘build your own lightsaber’ kit was on SALE dammit!

Whatever happened to Bitner anyway? Did we ever find him? I lost track somewhere along the way..:(

So here’s a question: Who would win in a fight, a shark or a lion? Say they’re in space or some shit and the odds are even, who takes it?

I’m watching Poltergeist III on AMC, and I’m remembering why I loved these movies when I saw them in high school. I should actually be writing my sermon for tomorrow morning, but since it’s aout the destructive power of evil, the movie is giving me something to think about. How’s that for justifed procrastination?

Chestnuts roasted by Josh @ 08/12/2006 7:16 PM

I’m just digging that Kenan and Kel have a almost complete leech page. I finally will be able to see the movie.

I’m going to go with shark purely because the idea of a gang of intergalactic crime-fighting space sharks in astro-suits is so much more appealing then the same scenario with lions.

I haven’t seen those Shark pops up here in Canada yet, but here’s hoping. I will buy anything shark related. Hungover today Matt?

Last I think we heard of Bitner, he was making comments about some chick in an indie band.

I’m definately waiting for the Atari Flashback 2 to hit clearence. However,I do know it uses the real ROMS,unlike other Plugn’play items. So they’re definately accurate versions of the originals. Of course, like Matt said,a lot of them aren’t the best games. Still, though,Asteroids and Centipede!

Hey, look. It’s our American friend, Johnny Bluejeans.

Master3004: Yeah, we’ve all been there. My first experience with this site involved explaining to a housemate why I was reading a website called "x-entertainment.com" with a picture of Helen Slater’s spandex-covered bosom on the front page. Good times.

Well, I’ll check in later to see if the Curse has taken hold. For now, my copy of Warlords is here, and those cursed Ottomans aren’t going to put their own empire to the torch.

I’ve seen all but one frozen treat delivery man in the past five years. We only have snow cone trucks out here, and I swear he saw me waving money at him and turned around to not have to sell me one. I guess if I had to listen to that continuous loop of "She’ll Be Comin Round The Mountain" I’d be a dick too.

Chestnuts roasted by TheChad2000 @ 08/12/2006 7:50 PM

Ah yes, I’ve seen those shark pops in several stores in the South Jersey area, though I’m not sure if them have them at the one I currently work at. I’m not a huge popsickle fan, anyway. I like my frozen bars with cream or ice cream or fruit; something a bit more substancial.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 08/12/2006 8:01 PM

Matt, I’ve been a follower of the site for a while now but never posted. I know you live in Jersey, and I was wondering exactly where? I think you’re close to me,

Anyway, as for the lack of ice cream trucks? Not possible. Why? Because I drive one. Little Jimmy’s it a distributor of ices and ice cream, with Weaser’s and Good Humor as our competition. So when I’m on the road, I see many, many ice cream/ices trucks.

As for these sharks, we get asked for them all the time but never have them I guess their the latest craze in kinder-dining.

Chestnuts roasted by Ice Cream Man TT @ 08/12/2006 8:08 PM

Josh: You’re a preacher? I don’t know why, but that’s one profession I never thought anyone here would be.

I shouldn’t be surprised though, I’ve heard of courses that take The Simpsons and South Park and shows us the morality in them.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 08/12/2006 8:13 PM

You know, I remember buying Great Whites off Ice Cream trucks and they were shaped like a shark’s head and tasted of lemonade.

Chestnuts roasted by Maxx @ 08/12/2006 8:15 PM

Yep. I’m a student pastor in the United Methodist Church. Just cause I’m religious don’t mean I don’t love pop culture. In fact, I’m planning a Buffy the Vampire Slayer sermon series.

Chestnuts roasted by Josh @ 08/12/2006 8:18 PM

You know what? That might be what all the kids have been raving about. Those, Dora the explorers, and Shots. I dunno what those are, but every time a little kids goes "You got shots?" I think, "Man, this is what our world is coming to." :)

Chestnuts roasted by ICMANTT @ 08/12/2006 8:26 PM

I don’t have an Atari Flashback 2 but I have a intellivision type one. See I have every single Intellevision game ever made but no intellevision. So I bought this and I played it all of twice. Now I remember why I have the games, to remind me of how cool they were and why I don’t have the system, to keep me from playing them.

Hey, everyone! I came home from work for my half-hour break, and have to go back to work in a few minutes. I am seeing a number of unfamiliar faces, so welcome to all newcomers! Enjoy the nonsensical fun, and blog responsibly. I am quite anticipating the release of "Darkwing Duck: vol 1" on DVD. I have been thinking up some new story and title ideas for the event that the show should be revived, a la Family Guy. Here’s some of what I came up with: the Pimple Life, From Here to Infermity, Sole Mates, Save the Rest for Last. I G2G; i’ll be back in 6 hours. Thank you!

We actually have TWO ice cream trucks that come around here, but they can be hard to catch. We have Mr. Softee and Angels on Wheels which I think is really really local.

But I have an interesting story that’s worthy of SNT. There’s this girl named Sarah I work with that’s over on the other side of the call center. One time I was in the bathroom taking a piss and she’s in the handicap stall next to me doing her business and talking on her cel phone and oohing and ahhing over some friend of hers. Strange girl. Anyway, I’ve recently come to find out that this girl was actually one of the winners from http://www.nbc.com/The_Biggest_Loser/players/specialedition/couples/sarah.shtml">The Biggest Loser.

Kinda weird, huh?

I’m stuck indoors tonight. But I’m selling merch for a band from DC, called Army of Me. We’re on tour this week, so I’ll be frequenting this here August Mega-party thing.

We were cracking up at the great white sharks popsicles.

My girlfriend just started working at a tattoo parlor as a receptionist. and she gets free ink. so i think i may actually go get my first tattoo. the one i’ve wanted since i was nine years old: charmander.

One of the local ice cream trucks plays Tetris music. It’s like double nostalgia.

Welcome all newcomers!

Ahhhh, the Bitner saga- that one kept me glued to my seat until 4 AM, and then I was an XE-er for life.

Yeah, I haven’t seen any shark related popsicles in my area of Canada either- here’s hoping.

I am off to a Texas Hold Em game, and then to play pool. Here’s hoping there’s no curse tonight!
