August Megaparty #6: Kong Vs. Piranhadon!

It's been a long week, and since they always have the best cereals, I thought I'd end it with a trip to Target. And because I'm a hot soccer Mom on the go. While there, I waltzed into the toy section and tried my darndest to look like I was buying a gift for a small child and was in no way, shape or form shopping for myself. I was doing okay at that for a while, but once I hit the clearance racks, giddy exuberance blew my cover and let everyone in the store know that I am a tried and true loser.

Red stickers marked "2.48" are enough to get me to buy just about anything, but what the sticker belonged to was a toy I'd been using as masturbation material for months. It was a King Kong figure, from the same series as that awesome bug set I reviewed back in March. There was no King Kong figure in that set, but he was a part of this red tag glory set. That's not why I bought it, though. Fuck the monkey; I came for the giant piranha.

This "Kong Vs. Piranhadon" action figure set is just one of the many cases of Piranhadon sightings in the world of the Jacksonized King Kong. I've seen Piranhadons mentioned in the associated books, here on the toys, production sketches, blah blah blah. I'm wondering if there's a cut scene involving a Kong-eating Piranhadon somewhere on the extended DVD. Can anyone confirm or crush my dreams?

There are a few plusses and minuses regarding the set. I appreciate Kong's headlock-into-noogies wrestling pose and the fact that Piranhadon's "razor sharp teeth" really bite, but with the way both figures are permanently situated, they look damned ridiculous if they're doing anything but beating each other up.

The Kong revival failed to spark any real level of interest in kids, at least in as far as getting them to want Kong-related things. The toys were bought mostly as gifts by adults who didn't know the children they were buying toys for very well. "Oh, there's King Kong. And there's Donatello. And there's Triple H. Well, I know who King Kong is." The toy series was dead long before it hit clearance racks, but now that it has, I can finally meet my destiny and add a Piranhadon to my Tank of Undersea Gloom, which is really just a plastic box filled with fish-related action figures laying on the bottom shelf of my TV unit.

Those markdown sales are the best — I scored the revamped MOTU slime pit, and a couple of those LEGO Transformers for a couple bucks a piece last year.

Random song quiz! Just because I’m bored pouring over old CDs. It’s somewhat related…..if you’re willing to stretch the concept of "related" Nightcrawler’s been a toy, and no doubt somewhere on earth was on sale.

I’ve got a Dungeon Master’s guide
I’ve got a twelve-sided die
I’ve got Kitty Pryde, and Nightcrawler too
Waiting there for me
Yes I do
I do

:)

Something weird I think I have noticed is mention of Walmart having a supirior action figure section. Here, in South Bend, IN they are quite possibly the worst. For legitamate large chains that aren’t dollar stores. We have a place very similar to walmart also called Meijer. Only in like 4 surrounding states I think, so I doubt you out there Matt (and others) or out the other there have ‘em. They’re wonderful. The only good thing about walmart is sometimes they have specials that other places don’t, walmart exclusives. Or just some random thing no one else seems to have. But those times I can count on one hand.
Anyway, they have this Marvel Monsters box set at Walmart, with Werewolf By Night, Dracula, Frankenstien, and I Zombie. I haven’t seen this thing even on the web or in magazines and there are only two sitting there, in only one of the 3 walmarts within reasonable driving distance. Weird.
Last toy I bought … I cant remember. I’ve only had a little free cash lately and what I’ve had, I’ve allowed myself to buy this constructible pirate ship game called Pirates that no one I know plays. But the newest edition has Davey Jones, The Flying Dutchman, and various Gian Squid Kraken Monsters. And it’s not Pirates of the Carribean either. Of course all those things are publicly known things, nothing orriginal there, but you know they did that on purpose. So anyway, I knew about the game (and the ships are real neat looking) but I said I wouldn’t buy this until the unlikely event they had Krakens. Well… There you go. Now if only someone else around here played…

spooky, It is pretty rare, but Wal-Mart is in the market of rare, alternate action figures. When a line comes out, they commission a certain figure and have a different head carved by the sculptor, or a different suit, what have you. They’re called Variants, and they’re shipped like one per 15 boxes. Hence the hard-to-find, lack of sightings.

Though, if looking for obscurity, Kaybee Toys is a good place to hunt. They do the same thing.

Only place I’ve found a Captain Britain figure….

Invader Norbert-
The dubbed RID anime was WONDERFUL.
And as far as action figures go,I’ll always love G1,but it’s pretty obivious RID=FTW. Search your heart, you know it’s true.

And I fail to see the point of a music quiz where the answer is the most famous rock band in the world.

I was holding out for the Kong Special Extended Director’s Cut Collector’s Hubba Hubba Edition, but I didn’t know if it was truth or myth, and I found a good price for the 2-disc, so I gots it a while ago.
As for the Piranha fishy, he and his buddies are proeminently featured in the Kong game. Lost Adrien Brody’s leg to one, once, but I’m pretty sure that was a bug, because he kept on walking afterwards.
And toys. Yeah, having a 6-month-old in the house does wonders for toy-buying excuses. Recently, I got a Lightning McQueen big pillow and a small plush that yells when you hit it (cute) and that tiny TMNT set that used to come with the first four DVDs.

On other news, finally saw Cars. Beautiful, stunning movie, and cute, but Over the Hedge was way funnier.

Last action figure…I think it was one from the first Spiderman movie, with nerdy a nerdy Peter Parker who could squirt water instead of webbing and knock over stuff.

The one thing about those Target clearance stickers is that they are a bitch to remove. I guess that only matters if you are giving them as gifts, which I have. I recently decided that I am addicted to Target and now limit myself to once every week or two. I guess there are worse habits.

Having two young children of my own, both boys,I have all the excuses I need to buy all the cool toys. The one roadblock…the woman. Oh well, they still get cool stuff. Can’t remember the last toys I purchased, but lately I’ve been checking out some new Robotech toys. :)

This weekend I bought a Noid bendable at a yard sale…for only a quarter. I don’t know what to do with it now, but I can’t resist buying bright red things that only cost 25 cents.

I can never buy action figures because I always have to buy 2. I mean, even though Kong has an enemy there to "battle", it’s still not a fair fight. You’d have to get another Kong or full-size, standing dino to battle with him. I guess that toy you bought would work if you still took baths, but other than it’s just not an even match

I love the Alternators line of Transformers. Masterpiece Starscream is on pre-order too. Last toy I got was the Hybrid Convoy (japanese op. prime) who’s kinda fiddly, but hella poseable and nicely detailed.

yay transformers!

Just bought a Jack Sparrow figure for my desk at work. He now stands next to Optimus prime and Unicron (both miniature) and a very angry King Kong. Everybody I work with thinks I’m really screwed up in the head, but I think the same of them for having pictures of cats and "loved ones" on their desks.

The only kong stuff that I bought were the creatures of skull island set and the dvd. I would have liked to get the skull island playset but I didn’t, so meh.

Last Figure (s)

Alt Prime, Roll Bar and Re-issue Blaster. Always buy 2 so I can open one up and leave the other in box, or I can have the robot mode and car mood on display.

Might by the Kiss Convoy, but that line just looks idiotic. But I need to have my shiny Alts/Bt’s.

I actually really liked the RId line. My favorite had to be of course Prime and even the Omega Prime combo. However, Scourge I loved. Great mold, great colors. Looks like that’s what thaey are using for the live action TF movie. Hopefully Bay will drop the flames. Fast and the Furios 5 this is not.

For all those who were so damn nice in the last thread, taking it one day at a time, but I had a fever last night, and today, but I HAD to come to work since I’m leaving to Vegas next week and have a shitload of things to get done.

At least I’m alive and I have a job, right? And a shitload of TF’s so….

I fail to see the need to call people out when they post part of what has to be this blog’s and site’s unofficial theme song.

And as for the other part of that comment, you’ve mistaken Weezer for Green Day.

"I walk a lonely road, the only one that I have ever known, don’t know where it goes, but it’s home to me and I walk alone"

"and there’s nothing wrong with me, this is how I’m supposed to be, in a land of make-believe that don’t believe in me."

We had a parade this morning. The American Indian Exposition started here in town, and I snagged a small handful of candy. If you’re in the area, come see the carnival, and watch some Native Americans dance. I wonder what sort of cheap crap will catch my eye this time. I’ll eat a fried Twinkie or Snickers for the X, diabetes be damned. After the inevitable coma, I’ll tell you guys if it was worth it.

I have RiD Prime, and he’s in a tie with Cybertron Prime for favorite so far. But, when I finally get my grubby paws on a 20th anniversary Prime, then forget it. I need to get Primus, because Unicron is getting cranky, and I can’t find the Marvel Galactus set ’round here.

oh, and guilty pleasure – I kinda like the Star Wars transformers, for all their faults.

Hi, all! :)

Last toys I got: a few Cybertron TFs; Starscream, Override, and Buzzsaw. Plus a Storm Jet.
Also bought last week: a "Fightin’ Gear" Raphael that was dirt cheap…

And then the wife returned home from her vacation and put a stop to it all :)

I don’t think I’ve bought a toy in a really, really long time, much less an action figure. But I bought a house, dammit! And it’s actually a really, really big house. Which sucks. Because I have an entire room to put my toys in but I don’t have any toys. And since I spent the weekend removing the fish pond in th back yard, I don’t have any fish either. Just a big empty hole and a big empty room. Man, I suck.

Chestnuts roasted by LemurCat @ 08/07/2006 2:52 PM

Last toy I bought was the giant Spider-Man with 27 points of articulation, to go along with my big-ass Green Goblin. I must say the Goblin is alot cooler looking, with more detail. While the Spidey is kinda shitty (bad paint job, not as much detail) but hey now Gobey isn’t so lonely…. need to get the Venom to complete the set.

Chestnuts roasted by Crassmonkey @ 08/07/2006 5:26 PM

Ok, I neglected to mention in my last post that the Cybertron figures I listed…I don’t have yet, because of lack of funds. I did discover today that there is a new Unicron figure, this time a deluxe size and transforms into some kind of spaceship. There’s also a new decepticon from the Giant Planet with the name Menasor who just looks plain cool.

On RiD…I forgot about Scourge, who really is one of my favorite RiD figures (even though he’s a repainted G2 Powermaster Optimus). I also forgot the 3 Bullet Train figures that made up Rail Racer, which were also good quality and made a great gestalt form. My opinion on the dub is basically I liked the show (hell, I’ve seen every episode), but I didn’t like how it was an anime as opposed to the kitschy 80s feel to G1 and the computer generated goodness of Beast Wars. I didn’t like the main story to it, as there seemed to be several disjointed ones, like the rescuing of Koji’s father (which took forever), all of the filler episodes with one-or-two shot characters, not to mention the entire character of T’AI, the only "female" in the entire series. Not to mention the introduction to the O-Parts, which unlocked Fortress Maximus, just came out of nowhere. The fact that this followed Beast Machines didn’t really help either on quality comparison. I do give kudos to incorporating just about every figure that was released into the TV show, including recolors! (with the exception of holdovers from the Beast Machines line like Bruticus & Megatron Megabolt)
