August Megaparty #6: Kong Vs. Piranhadon!

It's been a long week, and since they always have the best cereals, I thought I'd end it with a trip to Target. And because I'm a hot soccer Mom on the go. While there, I waltzed into the toy section and tried my darndest to look like I was buying a gift for a small child and was in no way, shape or form shopping for myself. I was doing okay at that for a while, but once I hit the clearance racks, giddy exuberance blew my cover and let everyone in the store know that I am a tried and true loser.

Red stickers marked "2.48" are enough to get me to buy just about anything, but what the sticker belonged to was a toy I'd been using as masturbation material for months. It was a King Kong figure, from the same series as that awesome bug set I reviewed back in March. There was no King Kong figure in that set, but he was a part of this red tag glory set. That's not why I bought it, though. Fuck the monkey; I came for the giant piranha.

This "Kong Vs. Piranhadon" action figure set is just one of the many cases of Piranhadon sightings in the world of the Jacksonized King Kong. I've seen Piranhadons mentioned in the associated books, here on the toys, production sketches, blah blah blah. I'm wondering if there's a cut scene involving a Kong-eating Piranhadon somewhere on the extended DVD. Can anyone confirm or crush my dreams?

There are a few plusses and minuses regarding the set. I appreciate Kong's headlock-into-noogies wrestling pose and the fact that Piranhadon's "razor sharp teeth" really bite, but with the way both figures are permanently situated, they look damned ridiculous if they're doing anything but beating each other up.

The Kong revival failed to spark any real level of interest in kids, at least in as far as getting them to want Kong-related things. The toys were bought mostly as gifts by adults who didn't know the children they were buying toys for very well. "Oh, there's King Kong. And there's Donatello. And there's Triple H. Well, I know who King Kong is." The toy series was dead long before it hit clearance racks, but now that it has, I can finally meet my destiny and add a Piranhadon to my Tank of Undersea Gloom, which is really just a plastic box filled with fish-related action figures laying on the bottom shelf of my TV unit.

The last action figures I bought were the My Chemical Romance "Rock Action Heroes" line. They cost me alot more than $2.48

Hey Matt. Long time reader, first time poster. The site rules btw. I’ve wasted too much time at work on here. Oh yeah, King Kong looks pissed.

$2.48 well spent!

Matt, there is indeed a cut scene of the pirahnadon. If I’m not mistaken it will be included in the super duper special directors yada yada edition. I’m pretty sure I read a rundown of the scene on a web site, maybe Aint it cool (can’t really remember)

Yeah, I was right. It’s going to be in the Extended Edition coming out soon. Here’s a link to an article about the scene: http://nitti.aintitcool.com/display.cgi?id=23948

Hey Matt! Last night I delved waaaaaaay into the archives here, spending countless hours just reading all the articles. God, this site is cool.

Well, thanks for making such a kickass site.

I sleep with a Triple H toy

The last toy I bought was Optimus Prime from the Transformers: Cybertron line. With the batteries he was dang near $50. He’s okay, but not worth $50. I still miss Robots in Disguise. They are the best of the Transformers toy lines, despite the special place that G1 holds in my heart.

I had an awesome day today. Some of the other posters may remember I rolled my car back in May. I got the replacement a couple weeks ago, but I’ve been working tons of overtime. Since I ride a bus to work most days, I’d barely gotten to drive it. Also, since I got the first one in January, and wrecked it in May, and winter in southeast Idaho lasts well into April, I really hadn’t gotten to drive the previous one any place cool. Finally, since the car I owned before that had a leaky transmission and it sometimes refused to shift even with the fluid topped off, I didn’t dare get out with it.

So finally today after two years of living here, I got to get out and go someplace neat just for the hell of it. I drove to Grand Teton National Park and made a big loop through it. I drove over Teton Pass (8,400 feet). I made the trip to Jackson, WY (which is ALMOST there) once before, in the car I later rolled, but I took the route along the Snake River valley that time. It was a fun drive to say the least.

I took a picnic lunch and just sat and stared at the mountains for a while today. It sounds totally stupid, but it was really beautiful. It was kind of cloudy for part of the day, which was too bad. Still, at one point a hole opened in the clouds right over the highest peak and a ray of light shone down just on that one mountain, with the others still partially obscured in swirling mists. It kind of reminded me of those cheesy shots of "heaven" like in "Highway to Heaven," except that this was actually awe inspiring. Completely kick-ass day.

P.S. Sorry for the looong off-topic post. I picked up some beer that I can’t get in Idaho on my way back, and it has apparently made me feel like typing- a lot.

From what I’ve seen, none of the Kong figures are really that good, but even I’d buy that if it was that cheap.

Plus, in the package bubble, it looks like Kong and Piranhadon are posing for a Christmas card photo.

The last "Action Figure-ish" thing I bought was a japanese Nintendogs Shiba Inu plushie from Nintendo World back in September, when i was in the city to see Elton John at The Garden.

Last toy I bought was Spider-Man with pizza delivery scooter. ‘Twas on clearance for $2.99. The best thing about it (other than the fact that it shoots pizzas from the rear like in GTA: Vice City) is that you can switch Spidey’s/Peter Parker’s heads. I just like taking off the Spidey head and posing the figure so it looks like Spider-Man is going bowling with his own head. Stee-rike!

You’re right about the Kong line dropping like it’s *not* hot, Matt. It seems most movie-based toy lines fail miserably these days. Pirates 2 seems to be selling well, and if they ever release a Maccus (the hammerhead guy- is it wrong that I know his name?) figure, I’ll all be all over it.

I like your post, spaz. I know what you mean about the mountains. After trips to visit family in Wales, I forget all the buses and trains breaking down and times it rained for 4 days straight, and just remember the perfectly breezy days in the mountains where you feel like there’s no better place in the world.

God I love Target and their red clearance stickers. Congrats on the cheap Piranha, Matt.

Last figurine I bought was a Super Saiyan Vegeta, yesterday… Yeah I have about 50 of him already, but this one came with a sweet holographic card. Couldn’t pass it up for under 7 bucks.

The last toys I bought was the Marvel Legends Galactus Series. Those are cool figures, but I stopped buying them because I’m broke plus I lack space.

I went to Wal-Mart today and they were swarming with Superman Returns toys. I’m sure it’s only a matter of time before they’re discounted if they’re not already.

Yesterday I spent all day watchig "MTV Day 1" on VH1 Classic. In theory it’s cool, but after hearing Phil Collins sing "In the Air Tonight" for the fifth time it can get annoying seeing the same videos.

Two ounces of what?

Chestnuts roasted by Jessica Marie @ 08/07/2006 12:24 PM

That’s the magic of Target. Screw Wal-Mart’s deals, though having the upper-hand on action figure array. My Target’s fairly close, so I frequent it, and I’m rarely disappointed. Their clearance aisles wonder all. Be it shampoo, deodorant, or a Megatron Christmas present for your brother, IT’S THERE.

The last toy I bought avoids rememberence, but the last ones I received were the View Askew "Inaction Figures" (they don’t move) of the "Fly, Fat Ass, Fly!" Silent Bob and the "Stink Palm" Brodie.

It was a Holly Jolly Christmas.

Wish I was near a Target; I’ve gotten some kick-ass DVD deals there. I picked up the double-disk Anniversary editions of the Rogers and Hammerstein musicals "State Fair" and "Oklahoma!" when I visted my best friend a few weeks ago for 21 dollars all together.

I haven’t bought any actual action figures since I grabbed some "Revenge of the Sith" stuff from Toys R Us last year. I’ve bought stuffed animals and Sailor Moon dolls (the latter are on my desk now, keeping my computer safe from the Negaverse) in the last few months, but I’m still waiting for the Superman toys to come down.

Chestnuts roasted by starwenn @ 08/07/2006 12:50 PM

I was wondering that too, Jessica Marie, but was slightly afraid to ask.

Maybe Matt’s trying to make a perfect Kool Aid flavor?

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 08/07/2006 12:51 PM

Last action figure purchased here? Frozone, on clearance at the Disney Store for $5. He goes nicely with the Syndrome and blue-suited Mr. Incredible I picked up a few days before that.

Last toy I bought, period, would have been some of the Cars die-casts. Mater, a Dinoco Lightning McQueen, and the King are all sitting on my desk (or will be, once I figure out where Mater went).

I loves me my Pixar, after all.

Where did this "two ounces" talk come from?

And I’m jealous of spaz. I just spent the day playing Kingdom Hearts II. I did see Over The Hedge for the first time today, though, and I think Matt was a bit harsh. It was actually good – amazing!

I have a King Kong poster on my wall but I haven’t bought the DVD yet… I don’t know why, I simply forget it.

As a Transformers collector, my last action figure purchases were the TFs in the Cybertron line. Since I’m a college student, I’ve gone back to my ways in just getting the ones I like, such as Soundwave, Metroplex, and Primus. (yes, he turns into Cybertron and comes with the Omega Lock, which you need the 4 different Cyber Planet Keys for)

And spaz: Cool day and all, but RiD the #2 line after G1? Blasphemy. Sure it gave us the Fire Truck Optimus, the kickass Megatron that could transform into 7 different things, and the Build Team, but most of the rest of the figures were just plain unimaginable, and all the Predacons & Decepticons were recolors of Transmetal Beast Wars figures and the G1 Bruticus series. Plus, the dub show was just plain awful, and the recolor of Fortress Maximus was only in Japan!

Last action figure I bought was a Darkseid figure (Justice League animated version).
Got it for 7 bucks on eBay. woot.

I love the Target $2.48 sticker!
Both the Pirates and Kong toy lines have definitely been underwhelming. If I could get a pencil box with angry dinosaurs fighting I would be all over it, but the action figures are totally ug. I’m sure if I look I’ll find Orlando Bloom’s face plastered across a spiral notebook, though.
I tend more toward the cutesy with my toys (PPG, Disney, Spongebob…I have a Bulbasaur pencil sharpener that I treasure) so I’m not all that hip to all the latest goods…I’m really looking forward to the new Harry Potter NECA stuff though.

Just got home now (3:07 AM) from a whirlwind road trip to Montreal, the Gaspesie, and New Brunswick. Great times. And now I have lots and lots of XE to read and catch up on.

Nice buy on the Kong figure.
