Ice Blue Kool-Aid & Nintendo Poster.

I didn't get a chance to finish that new article yet (but I have started), so we head for our traditional fallback plan of a new Kool-Aid review. I thought the crew was getting a little red-heavy, so let's shade up like a motherfucker with a review of Ice Blue, the coolest Island Twist, still currently on the market as "Ice Blue Raspberry Lemonade," a regular Kool-Aid Twist. Harug rug rar. It's a special Kool-Aid for many reasons, not the least of which being the fact that Ice Blue is, indeed, original Berry Blue reincarnate. If you like drinks, you'll like this!

Came across this while cleaning out boxes today -- it's one of those old posters that came packaged with, in some variation, every Nintendo game ever. Paperwork was half the joy of getting a new Nintendo game. From the often elaborate instruction manuals to the No Postage Necessary subscription cards to Nintendo Power, the game's assorted paperwork made those rides back from the toy store less about a bullet race to your bedroom-based video game systems and more about finally having something worth reading. Posters like the one above were very often a part of the paperwork, offering picture-punctuated lists of popular and/or new games. One of my favorite things to do was pretend I could only ever have three of the games and figure out which three they'd be, so I'm putting that question to you:

Click the poster to see it bigger, and pick the three games you'd bring along if you were going to be stranded on a tiny island with a working Nintendo for a few months. Keep in mind, that's a different question than "name your three favorites."

I'd probably go with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, which aside from being a great game also had the trump of never seeming to get old. For #2, I think I'd swipe Kung-Fu. That one would get old, but the thought of punching dragon eggs to death before they had a chance to hatch seems to offset knowing that. And needing to pick both a classic and a long game for the all-important #3, I guess I'm going with The Legend of Zelda. Sure, the thrill of figuring out where to bomb my way into secret arrow shops is gone, but I never did quite master the art of the cemetery section. Your turn.

The ghosts in the cemetery are easy when you remember the one you can hit is the only one that doesn’t go diagonally. That’s the one you smack around to turn all the others into Rupees, hearts, and magic clocks.

just wondering if you’ve ever tried Kool-Aid Jamaica flavor…interestingly enough, its part of their Agua Fresca line of spanish products and is made of ground hibiscus flower.

On the subject of Ice Blue Raspberry Lemonade, I love this stuff. I mean seriously, I get upset when I buy Koolaid and they don’t have this flavor. Pink Lemonade just doesn’t cut it. Forget about those stupid flavors that make your mouth all minty when you finish drinking. I am a fan of Grape, Ice Blue, Orange, and not much else. Oh, and the whole Kool Aid hair dying thing still goes on in my neighborhood. I saw two teenagers using it on their porch the other day. Has no-one heard of MANIC PANIC?!?!?

1. Super Mario Brothers 3. Automatic win there, and a personal childhood fave.
2. Dr. Mario. Prefer it over Tetris (sacrilege, I know). Get the music stuck in yer head.
3. Mega Man 6. 2nd best of the classics to #7, in my opinion.

Man, spend a day hunting Sigil’s in Final Fantasy X and I miss this. Such is life. I got the Sun sigil, you chocobo ridden SOB, I am a gaming god.

oh, yeah survey:

1. Legend of Zelda
2. Dragon Warrior–I love almost any RPG and while I didn’t finish this one, that’s the perfect reason to bring it :)
3. Metroid

If you want alltime favs for NES, like some have done despite the instructions of this thread:

1. Final Fantasy–DUH! Still have my complete edition, box, maps, strategy guide and all. Been playing since the beginning, yo :D
2. Simon’s Quest–you can keep the OG Castlevania, SQ does it for me everytime.
3. Legend of Zelda–I’ve almost bought it for my GBA Sp. But not quite.

I have this very poster in my den. (Just need to find a decent frame for it so my wife will allow me to put it up) I scored it when I recently aquired a practically brand-spanking new NES system from my grandma-in-law’s attic. I think it was owned by her late husband who bought it and only played it for like a month before putting it away. Gotta love old people. As for my picks, I’d go with: 1.Tetris, because it’s freaking Tetris 2.Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! because it’s timeless and just a lot of fun. and 3.Metroid because I never really played that much even though I owned and beat Metroid 2 on gameboy.
My vote for game not on the poster would have to be Bubble Bobble if only for the kick-ass repetitive soundtrack.

How did you get a table with the EXACT same shade of blue as the Ice Blue in your pitcher?

Chestnuts roasted by Michael @ 07/19/2006 1:52 AM

Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda and Metroid. Of course.

my girlfriend’s favorite flavor is the blue raspberry lemonade. we have some in our fridge right now.
i recently acquired an unopened package of "Blue Moon Berry" for the "Blast-Offs" collection of Kool-aid. I hadn’t seen you do any articles on that generation. You should definitely look into it.

I’m visiting NYC this week and i’m going spastic on the comic shops and vintage pokemon toys i’ve found in the Hello Kitty stores. my new $2 pokemon star shaped clock rules.

glad you’re feeling better!

Without a second thought…

1) Tetris
2) SMB
3) Donkey Kong Classics

I would even just be fine with just Tetris, as it is my favorite game in the world.

You know i still have a working nintendo player from 1985. it was my older brother’s. I believe i learned how to play on it when i was only 5.

the games i would bring with me are Metroid, donkey kong, and supermario bros.

Aw damn i can’t believe i forgot.
Kid Icarus. for some reason that was my favorite game.
Do any of you remember that?

Just thought I’d say I’m having alot of fun on my vacation this week…

Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 07/19/2006 4:33 PM

holy crap, i had kid icarus. i was never good at it, but i remember loving the holy hell out of it.

i forgot to put my three in on my last post:

1. Super Mario Brothers
2. Zelda
3. Duckhunt (i really need a emulator for this…)

Chestnuts roasted by brianfax @ 07/19/2006 6:31 PM

Top of the list would be Mario Bros. for the simple fact that it never gets old to me because I am the only person in the Nintendo generation to have never beaten the game. Though I love video games, I suck at them tremendously. I am better at the more difficult games today than I was at the simpler ones of yesteryear.

Second game would be Cobra Triangle. I loved that game so much, but I never bought it. Much like Deja Vu (anyone remember that one?), I rented it every weekend and played it for 36 hours straight, then returned it to the shelf for five days.

For my third and final game, I would have to say that I would take Metroid along. Though I only remember enough to get me through the first level (thank god for emulators), I remember thinking it was the best fucking thing ever made, next to the first Contra and Maniac Mansion.

Chestnuts roasted by AD_Johnson @ 07/19/2006 6:40 PM

Kid Icarus was quite possibly the first game I ever beat. I borrowed from an obsessive middle-aged woman who had made all her own maps for it. Good times.

Hell yeah i remember Deja Vu, I still have it!!! I think the other similar game was Univited. Gotta love old-school click driven adventure games! Once you beat ‘em you can do it again in 2 minutes flat. Really good times :)

I say "excite bike" but I gotta say that "excite-a-bike" is pretty funny and I can see how you’d get that. Also, that is odd the table’s the same shade as the pitcher’s Kool Aid. I thought that might just be my imagination tho.

1. Zelda
2. Zelda II
3. Tetris

Hell ya. keep anyone busy for hours and hours.

Chestnuts roasted by AtomicPup @ 07/20/2006 3:06 PM

Tetris
Legend of Zelda
Dance Aerobics (because one has to stay in shape on the island)

Chestnuts roasted by Sylko @ 07/20/2006 3:21 PM

zelda
short order cook
mario 3

Chestnuts roasted by mandy_reeves @ 07/20/2006 3:28 PM

I’m listing these games without too much thought or analysis, otherwise, I would be deleting and adding for at least a year. Here goes (in no particular order)…

1. Contra
2. Legend of Zelda
3. Tecmo Super Bowl

Honorable mention: Faxanadu

Chestnuts roasted by Bludge @ 07/20/2006 8:36 PM

Super Mario 2
Dragon Warrior
Zelda

(Although I really want Metroid too. :-( )

Chestnuts roasted by Frito @ 07/20/2006 9:28 PM

Don’t worry, you’re not alone. I haven’t beaten the original Super Mario Bros. either. I can get to 8-3, then I die on those STUPID hammer bros. Damn them. DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 07/21/2006 12:41 PM

It’d be interesting to tally the votes, but with over 100 votes, I think I’ll pass.
