Ice Blue Kool-Aid & Nintendo Poster.

I didn't get a chance to finish that new article yet (but I have started), so we head for our traditional fallback plan of a new Kool-Aid review. I thought the crew was getting a little red-heavy, so let's shade up like a motherfucker with a review of Ice Blue, the coolest Island Twist, still currently on the market as "Ice Blue Raspberry Lemonade," a regular Kool-Aid Twist. Harug rug rar. It's a special Kool-Aid for many reasons, not the least of which being the fact that Ice Blue is, indeed, original Berry Blue reincarnate. If you like drinks, you'll like this!

(click pic to enlarge)

Came across this while cleaning out boxes today -- it's one of those old posters that came packaged with, in some variation, every Nintendo game ever. Paperwork was half the joy of getting a new Nintendo game. From the often elaborate instruction manuals to the No Postage Necessary subscription cards to Nintendo Power, the game's assorted paperwork made those rides back from the toy store less about a bullet race to your bedroom-based video game systems and more about finally having something worth reading. Posters like the one above were very often a part of the paperwork, offering picture-punctuated lists of popular and/or new games. One of my favorite things to do was pretend I could only ever have three of the games and figure out which three they'd be, so I'm putting that question to you:

Click the poster to see it bigger, and pick the three games you'd bring along if you were going to be stranded on a tiny island with a working Nintendo for a few months. Keep in mind, that's a different question than "name your three favorites."

I'd probably go with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, which aside from being a great game also had the trump of never seeming to get old. For #2, I think I'd swipe Kung-Fu. That one would get old, but the thought of punching dragon eggs to death before they had a chance to hatch seems to offset knowing that. And needing to pick both a classic and a long game for the all-important #3, I guess I'm going with The Legend of Zelda. Sure, the thrill of figuring out where to bomb my way into secret arrow shops is gone, but I never did quite master the art of the cemetery section. Your turn.

I’d be accidentally stranded (cuz no way would I intentionally get stuck on a tiny island even WITH electricity) still clutching: RC Pro-AM, Excitebike and Pinball because those are more or less repetitive and there’s no story to get bored with. Plus I was heavily addicted to them as a child. Particularly RC Pro-AM… it was a real mindwarper because after seven straight hours of it, I went for a ride in a car and remember wondering why we couldn’t just missle the cars ahead of us out of the way. :)

1 – Punchout
2 – Dragon Warrior (Oh the countless hours wasted building up your experience…ha ha!)
3 – EXCITEBIKE!

Super Mario Bros.
Tetris
Excitebike

I really want to play excitebike now, after thinking about it.

Tetris
Super Mario Bros.
Metroid

This is the easiest question I’ve ever been asked:

The legend of Zelda
Zelda II
Tetris

I pick Super Mario Bros-because after all these years,it’s still THE game to me,I still play it to this day.
Excitebike-This was the first non-hand-me-down,non-bundeled-with-system game I owned, and I still get really into it. Plus, you can make your own tracks and test yourself,so you’re not going to get sick of it easily.
Ice Hockey-a great game, which actually has no nolstalgia to me. I dled it last year when I was thinking Blades of Steel is kind of shit.

If this wasn’t limited to the poster,I would remove Ice Hockey and take Pac-Man. Honorable mentions would be Mappy and Galaga.

Since we’re talking about old school video games, anyone here have Point Blank DS yet? It’s awesome,a lightgun game you play with the stylus. No thinking, puzzle solving and gamefaqs.com checking, just blam blam blam! An old school style reflexes game. It also includes 3 "Chuck E.Cheese" whack-a-mole style games. (Yes,the alligator one is in there!) I’m totally addicted to Cracky Crab right now.

I remember when Toys "R" US used to only have tickets for the old SNES and Genesis games out on the floor, and you would pay and pick them up at customer service. I got "Head on Soccer" for the SNES system, which is a great game if you have not played it yet. On the ride home, I ripped that thing open and it had a huge poster with like every SNES game ever.

On you poster, the top three would be:
1. Golf
2. Super Mario Bros.
3. Ice Hockey

I know NES sports games sucked, but I have a soft spot for them.

This is my favorite audience participation event from X-E ever.

2 of my 3 games to choose are obvious:
Tetris
Golf

Tetris is simplistic, yet it is still my favorite long term game ever. My Lines record is 239. And Golf? I’ve had it forever, but I still play it once in a while, so there is definitely some replay value there. Actually, my NES Golf has a story behind it having to do with Nintendo posters. When I got my brand new NES back in ’86, I only had SMB. A much older friend (who could drive) was heading to a shopping mall, and my mom decided I needed another game to play, so she gave him money, and I chose 2 games from the original NES poster. I said to get Excitebike, and if they didn’t have that, then get Popeye. So, I wait at home in anticipation… which of those 2 will it be? Oh, the hours of fun to be had. Then, he comes back with… GOLF?! What a disappointing experience. Luckily, it turned out to be an entertaining game (I got those other 2 later).

On to my 3rd game. I see that I’m only stuck on the island for a few months, so I’ve decided to go with Faxanadu. It’s the only Adventure series game that I haven’t really played.

Now, one last thing to point out, is something that always sticks out when I look at this NES poster. That black part in the middle (underneath Excitebike) ALWAYS makes me start thinking of Batman. Fairly obvious to see, but there are his 2 pointy ears, and a shoulder that’s a little bit high.

Super Mario bros.
Super Mario bros. 2
Donkey Kong Classics

Honestly this is one of the worst selections I’ve ever seen on these posters.

Chestnuts roasted by dohopoki @ 07/17/2006 10:15 AM

Man, I have to narrow down six awesome games to just three?! Aight, here goes…

1. Super Mario Bros. 2
2. Zelda 2
3. Punch Out

After getting temporarily bored of these games, I would seek the nearest deserted island and find which ever one of you chose RC Pro-Am, Super Mario Bros., and Legend of Zelda. I could bring my games, some WWF Ice Cream Bars and a case of 20 year old Ecto Cooler and we’d be all set.

Chestnuts roasted by Justin @ 07/17/2006 10:59 AM

Ahh, one of you guys should know this. What’s that NES game where the guy says "You can’t shoot me"? But it’s like a real voice. It’s just about the only voicing in the game. What is it!!! It’s driving me crazy!

Maybe it wasn’t a NES game…Genesis?…but it was a game nontheless. Hmmm…

Chestnuts roasted by Justin @ 07/17/2006 11:06 AM

Since I just recently got rid of my 8-bit NES (Got sick of shoving the second game on top and trying to get that damned red light to stop blinking) and discoverd emulators, I can make my three choices definitive …

-Donkey Kong Classics (I have a soft spot for irrate apes)

-Legend of Zelda (I heart Link)

-Tetris (Though it’s not the same without the rectangular controller biting into your hands after the third straight hour of play)

Other favorites NOT listed:

Jeopardy!, Blades of Steel, TMNT, Final Fantasy

Chestnuts roasted by LemurCat @ 07/17/2006 11:17 AM

Easy. Zelda, Rad Racer & Dragon Warrior. The first two are old stand-bys. Dragon Warrior is so I don’t get TOO bored.

Chestnuts roasted by Mike Fireball @ 07/17/2006 11:35 AM

1. Metroid (I always get lost in Metroid, so I could spend all my free time making a map of the game for myself. It would probably be more efficient to make a map of the desert island that I am stranded on, but Metroid is way more fun.)

2. Zelda II (Since there is no one to talk to on the island, at least I can go in the towns on the game and talk to people. Except that one guy that runs by and says "I know nothing." I hate him.)

3. Short Order/Eggsplode with Power Pad (To keep in shape on the island. Again, my time would be better spent gathering food and building shelter, but who wants to do WORK?) Plus it is two games in one, the Burger-building "Short Order" and the Egg-stomping "Eggsplode". I have fond memories of playing Short Order, chanting "burger, cheese, burger, lettuce, lettuce" with my brother standing by to help me remember what comes next.

Hmmmm, this is tough.
(1) TETRIS- The obvious choice- after awhile, I would forget I was on an island, I get SO into that game. We used to play at college (2 player SNES version) and the loser would always have to terrible things. I only lost ONCE, but it meant I had to drink tabasco sauce. Ouch.

(2) Zelda- I love the SNES version, but sadly never ever played the NES version. I have always wanted to, so here’s a perfect opportunity.

(3) EXCITEBIKE- Man, I loved this game. Especially the fact that you can build your own tracks. That doesn’t get old.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 07/17/2006 12:04 PM

Ignoring the poster-only rule…

1) Tengen Tetris. Best Version of Tetris, EVER.

2) Super Mario Bros. 3. I will never tire of this game. I remember I got it for Christmas, and we were at my grandmother’s house, which was a few hours away from my NES. I must have read the manual cover to cover about 10 times in anticipation.

3) Rather than mention Zelda or Metroid or CastleVania or something like that, I’m going to have to go with "Ducktales" from Capcom. Still one of my favorite games. I might get tired of it faster that Tetris or SMB3, but I’d still like to have it with me.

Charlie: My TRU is still set up the "Old" way (They still have a few "World of Nintendo" banners, too), where you have to get the ticket and take it to the counter. Anybody else’s TRU still not remodeled to the "new" format?

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 07/17/2006 12:07 PM

Wow, I just read the Kool-Aid article… looks like the paint from your counter seeped up into the bottom of the pitcher. :o It’s so pretty!

I don’t think I ever had any blue Kool-Aid, but maybe once… I just can’t seem to eat or drink blue stuff. Makes me sick. :(

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/17/2006 12:08 PM

Cameron T.: Wow, you mean you still have the long ailses that shoot straight back through the store?

There are rumours of it actually going back to that, or something similar. I’m thinking they will just keep the sections, but instead of the "X" sections, they will put straight ailses in. People steal too much stuff in the "back of the X’s" as we call it.

(Damn you, Greymatter!!)

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/17/2006 12:14 PM

Yeah, the TRU where I live has only done a "half" remodel…There are still straight aisles for about 3/4 of the store, with a big open section in the middle with pre-school and kids toys. But even these are still the straight Aisles, just with shelves that are only 3 feet tall.

The TRU in my hometown, on the other hand, remodeled years ago. I hate the "Xs" as you call them..it just isn’t as fun to browse the aisles, and it seems like there’s always crap lying all about in disarry (although maybe that’s just due to incompetent workers).

Hopefully the TRU where I am now will not change…I would doubt it, since TRU was having financial troubles, anyway…

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 07/17/2006 12:44 PM

That sounds like a strange store. I’ve never seen one set up like that.

Alot of people complain about the X’s – they say it’s too much of a maze. And, yeah, some stores do just have a bunch of incompetent workers, but honestly, at our store (I work at one, ya know. :p) we really don’t even bother to straighten throughout the day (unless it’s really horrible or we’re just that bored) because once you do, it only takes one family to come right along behind you and F up everything you just did. You know how annoying that is? Our motto is "I hate people."

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/17/2006 1:11 PM

Your review of Ice Blue really really makes me want some Kool-Aid right now. I think I am going to go out and get some of that and make it.

Chestnuts roasted by Joker @ 07/17/2006 1:21 PM

Tetris, SMB, Donkey Kong Classics. I guess I’m just traditional that way.

Chestnuts roasted by ROBRAM89 @ 07/17/2006 1:35 PM

Tetris- I could play it practally forever. I have it for GB, a couple of NES on a Chip TV games, and a dance pad game with the Tengen version on it. Playing Tetris with your feet is a very unique experience.

Zelda- All the years I’ve had it, I have never completed the Second Quest.

Punch-Out- Never had the game, getting Gilligan’d would be a good opportunity to play it.

I wonder if that TRU that was supposed to be haunted is still operational?

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 07/17/2006 1:44 PM

Ah yes, Ryane, I believe that would be the motto of all customer service workers. I’ve said those very words many times this month, after being hung up on by self-important phone receptionists (I’ve been a receptionist myself, so I think I’m allowed to say that).
My picks would be SMB 2, Dr. Mario and Tetris (I can’t make out the poster so I’m pretending those are all on there). My latest obsession is Bejeweled 2, which is puzzling and difficult without rising to Tetris levels of frustration.
Anybody remember a Gameboy game where you played a kid being carried around the world by balloons? As you got hit, they would pop until you fell to your death. Can anyone name it?

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 07/17/2006 2:35 PM

I’d have to agree with you Matt on bringing Mike Tyson’s Punch Out with me. I’ve played that game about 50,000 times, and it doesn’t get old.

The 2nd game I’d bring would be Maniac Mansion, because there’s about 3 different ways to beat the game with different endings.

The 3rd game would have to be Castlevania. I love that game, and could never beat Dracula when I was younger. I’ve since then beaten Drac on an emulator version.
