Ice Blue Kool-Aid & Nintendo Poster.

I didn't get a chance to finish that new article yet (but I have started), so we head for our traditional fallback plan of a new Kool-Aid review. I thought the crew was getting a little red-heavy, so let's shade up like a motherfucker with a review of Ice Blue, the coolest Island Twist, still currently on the market as "Ice Blue Raspberry Lemonade," a regular Kool-Aid Twist. Harug rug rar. It's a special Kool-Aid for many reasons, not the least of which being the fact that Ice Blue is, indeed, original Berry Blue reincarnate. If you like drinks, you'll like this!

(click pic to enlarge)

Came across this while cleaning out boxes today -- it's one of those old posters that came packaged with, in some variation, every Nintendo game ever. Paperwork was half the joy of getting a new Nintendo game. From the often elaborate instruction manuals to the No Postage Necessary subscription cards to Nintendo Power, the game's assorted paperwork made those rides back from the toy store less about a bullet race to your bedroom-based video game systems and more about finally having something worth reading. Posters like the one above were very often a part of the paperwork, offering picture-punctuated lists of popular and/or new games. One of my favorite things to do was pretend I could only ever have three of the games and figure out which three they'd be, so I'm putting that question to you:

Click the poster to see it bigger, and pick the three games you'd bring along if you were going to be stranded on a tiny island with a working Nintendo for a few months. Keep in mind, that's a different question than "name your three favorites."

I'd probably go with Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, which aside from being a great game also had the trump of never seeming to get old. For #2, I think I'd swipe Kung-Fu. That one would get old, but the thought of punching dragon eggs to death before they had a chance to hatch seems to offset knowing that. And needing to pick both a classic and a long game for the all-important #3, I guess I'm going with The Legend of Zelda. Sure, the thrill of figuring out where to bomb my way into secret arrow shops is gone, but I never did quite master the art of the cemetery section. Your turn.

First?!

I’d have to go with Punch Out, Metroid, and Tetris. You can always use Tetris.

Let’s see here. Have to go with Zelda, because it’s Zelda. Next, I’m going to pick Dragon Warrior. It’s a bit of a gamble, as I’ve never actually played it, but a good RPG can kill more hours than any other genre. The final choice is Mario Brothers, but I’m going to cheat by making it the version with both Mario and Duck Hunt on one cartridge.

My 3? Easy cheesy, please-y.
1. Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link(yes, it’s my fave)
2. Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!(replay value, big time)
3. Dragon Warrior(oh the hours I could clock into that mother)

See? Easy. YOUR turn. SECOND?!?
Your Weirdo,

I think I would go with Tetris, Super Mario Brothers, and Metroid. Those would give me the most playtime, I feel.

Chestnuts roasted by Jim @ 07/17/2006 12:20 PM

I’m a dummy for not taking Tetris. Can I give back Kung-Fu?

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 07/17/2006 12:20 PM

I would choose SMB 2, Tetris, and Pinball. I love Pinball games.

I was looking at some of those new Kool-Aid Singles today and it had a weird warning on them "Not Recommended with flouridated water." I live in Iowa and our water is flouridated. Doesn’t all cities in the US flouridate their water? Probably why I’ haven’t really been a powder drink guy (Kool-Aid, Crystal Light, hot chocolate mixes etc) anymore.

1. Ice Hockey – I know it’s not the most obvious choice, however, I know we all like to get nostalgic here — so here’s my story: I remember playing Ice Hockey in the late 80′s with my older brother on a school night during a terrible snowstorm. During our heated game, my Mother came in and announced school the following day was cancelled; needless to say, after a small celebratory dance we continue playing that damn game for what felt like hours.

2. The Legend of Zelda – The music and rupees… need I say more?

3. Super Mario Bros. 2 – I always had a thing for Birdo.

Zelda, Metroid, and SMB2. Yes, the second one.

On Kool-Aid: Has anyone else tried the Watermelon Cherry flavor? It’s rock awesome!

Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 07/17/2006 12:34 PM

I’d take Tetris, as I’m amazingly addicted to the game. Then probably Pinball and Legend of Zelda.

Mmm… maybe now would be an opportune time to drink that old packet of Island Twists Ice Blue I’ve been hanging on to. Sad I only have one. Anyone wanna trade for some Strawberry Tea? I have like 14 packets of it.

Is this a threat, Matt?

If so, I’d bring the following 3 games:

1) an inflatable game
2) "How To Make Oars Out of Sticks & Sand"
3) Mario Bros 3.

;)

Second of all, I’m continuing my poll from the last thread, What do you think are the best XE Articles & blogs ever? I’ll chime in when I have more time on my hands (and awake)

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 07/17/2006 12:40 PM

I would have to take Zelda, Tetris and Ice Hockey because that game looks to be Blades of Steel. I would take those cause I own and play all 3 of them still!

Off to read about Kool-aid!

Matt, I want some electric honey.

Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 07/17/2006 12:46 PM

Super Mario

Mike Tyson’s Punch Out

Anticipation
(Everyone I knew always hated this game, but for some reason I have been completely in love with it since the moment we met, and ooo I can hear that music playing in my head right now)

Chestnuts roasted by Hot Pocket @ 07/17/2006 12:49 PM

From the poster only, mine would have to be:

1 – Dragon Warrior
2 – Tetris
3 – Super Mario Bros. 2

It was hard on that last one – Punch-Out! for it’s replayability? No, because Tyson always pissed me off. Metroid for some good shootin’? Maybe, but nostalgia and that spooky mothafucka mask lead me to pick Mario 2.

Why Dragon Warrior as number 1? That was a looooooooong, satisfying game. I remember I would keep going back to the princess after I saved her, just to get her to say "I love thee." (LOOOOOSER!)

Ahhh, ultimately useless emotional investment – where else are you outside of a Zelda game?

Reading about Ice Blue Kool-aid is making me want one of thos Kool-aid slushies they sell at the movies.

I used to be able to get Kool-aid ice cream floats at a Golden Griddle. Then the resturant changed owners and it go taken off the menu. Mmmm so thristy!

For my fav blog, I’m gonna have to go with the popular vote and say the Photog blog. It was after reading that blog I decided I would start to post on X-E blogs cause everyone on here is just so awesome!Plus I love saying Photog blog.
For my favorite article, hmm, I would have to say the Macys Thanksgiving parades are always cool. Whenever I watch an American Holiday movie at some point the characters are watching the parade, and it makes me feel like I missed out on something really big. So when I come here I get to read and see all the best parts. I like the silly articles too where it involves toys, action figures, drawings or wrestling thumbs. It’s just goofy enough to be right up my alley.

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 07/17/2006 1:00 AM

I’ll take both Zelda games and Tetris. I never played Dragon Warrior, so I’m not gambling on it, though I don’t know how can you go wrong with a game named "Dragon" anything. I was totally going to say ice hockey, but unless I have someone stranded on this island with me, to kick their ass in 2 player mode, it wouldn’t be as much fun.

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 07/17/2006 1:11 AM

Obviously I misread the Q.

I take back Mario Bros 3, because it’s not on the poster. I’ll replace it with that Power Pad Burgertime game. That looks pretty cool.

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 07/17/2006 1:18 AM

I used to play Super Mario, Contra, Tetris, Ice Climber, Mappy, Sky Destroyer, Lode Runner and Bomber Man. I still playing them in my computer and the emulator.

Emulators rules.

A few years more and we will be able to download a Game Cube Emulator and its games!

first time potsting, i’m so freakin excited. that said, the three games i’d play off the poster on a desert island would probably be zelda (1), mario (1) and metroid. i suck balls at the original metroid because i never know where to go (i need some direction in life, dammit!) and i’m bad at zelda 1 for the same reason. however, with all that free time on this island i’d have to get good at at least one of them, right?

… right?

Chestnuts roasted by zacH @ 07/17/2006 1:36 AM

Tetris (given), Zelda 2 (I… I haven’t beat it yet…), and Dance Aerobics (To build up my buns and thighs)

I suppose I’m being evil for saying no to the big 3; Mario, Link, and Samus but if we’re going by what will keep me occupied on an island for a few months I’d want something I wouldn’t get bored with. I’ve done Mario, Zelda, and Metroid waaaaaay too many times.
If I can take one not on the poster I want Gradius.

I have a secret confession to make, as much as I love eating blue things because they’re blue, I hate raspberry. The only thing I hate more is blue raspberry. It tastes like butt.

Chestnuts roasted by RedLightBulbs @ 07/17/2006 1:41 AM

Well, I suppose tetris would be the only game necessary for me. Once I get into a tetris groove, I tend to forget that there are other games that are not tetris. Since the other two would be freebies anyway, I’d pick Hogans Alley for some lightgun fun, and Ice Hockey. Blades of Steel was a killer game, but it’s not on the list. It still looks like the most fun sports game on there, since they don’t have Tecmo Bowl or Arch Rivals on there.

Chestnuts roasted by Phayke @ 07/17/2006 2:19 AM

1) Zelda (I think this is standard for everyone)
2) Tetris, the unauthorized Tengen version
3) Arkanoid

Where’s Mario? Hey, I’m on an ISLAND; I have to pick the three that will last me the longest. If I take Mario 3 I’d play up to a really frustrating part and then give up.

Matt said in this one:
Nobody understood how something so chic and pop could’ve been eliminated from the market, leading to such legends as original Berry Blue looking too similar to windshield wiper fluid for Kraft to sell it.

Sooooo, it was an urban legend, was it? It’s still written as fact in your Berry Blue review…might wanna change it one of these years when you have a free minute.

Chestnuts roasted by Mars @ 07/17/2006 2:42 AM

Tetris
Zelda
Mario 2
Wouldn’t gamble on DW, and Mario has been played past the point of no return already.
Metroid is tempting, but Mario 2 is a bit more charming. Off to read the Kool-Aid article. Being in the UK sucks; when I was in the states I could catch these updates within the first 5 posts. Blasted 6 hour difference!

Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 07/17/2006 3:03 AM

I’m going yo hafta say Tetris first and foremost. That game can really waste the time away for me. My next choice woud be Super Mario Bros., because that game also eats up a lot of my time. And then I’d pick DanceAerobics, cuz I’m gonna need sum exercise if I’m gonna live on that Island all by myself. But that’s only if the NES comes with a Power Pad. Otherwise, I pick Donkey Kong. Why? Cuz it’s a fucking classic!
