06/03/2006: Hostel: THUMBS CUT OFF AND DOWN.

Dunno how many of you are around for SNT since I haven’t been too diligent lately, but it’s here if ya want it. Finally saw Hostel for the first time today, and um…yeah. Don’t at all understand the hype that one got. Nowhere near as gritty as I’d read, and everything that happened before the shit hit the fan took way longer than everything that happened afterwards — not totally acceptable for a pretty short film. With such a disturbing premise, I couldn’t believe how little I was moved or affected. Some things were fairly gross, but knowing what you had to already know going into it, was anyone really all that shocked by any of it? You need to be shocked for a movie like this to work. I’m using more words than are needed to say that I felt nothing for Hostel, but beefy paragraphs are pretty.

Sucks because I had all of these gift certificates to blow at Best Buy this afternoon, but decided to hold onto ‘em because I knew Hostel had hit PPV and wanted to see it. Totally killed what was supposed to be an awesome Saturday horror movie deal. I should’ve known better and bought some video game I’d play four times and forget about; at least then I’d have more to do tonight than be pissy that I left the magic wire that connects my camera to my computer in Florida. Fuck you, mouse. Speaking of which, time to get back to the Disney articles. Hope everyone’s well. See you in a bit…

This is the closest I’ve ever been to the top of one of these.

That’s the one "presented by" Tarantino, right? I didn’t have any interest in seeing it, but I do have faith that Grindhouse will turn out cool.
HBO’s playing ROTS and it’s just at the infamous "NOooOOOOoo!" room shaker…now it reminds me of the Lost finale (one of the best moments of the series, that bit).

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 06/03/2006 10:24 PM EDT

I’m sure you’re all familiar with Youtube. Well, someone has been putting old episodes of "Tales from the Darkside" and "Monsters" on there. Darkside is better than gave it credit for, while Monsters is just plain fun.

Also, the bar section of the local activity paper had a recipe that supposedly tastes like Ecto Cooler. When I read it I immediately thought of the EC articles here.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 06/03/2006 10:32 PM EDT

I can’t watch slasher type flicks. For horror movies, I stick with monster or ghost stories. Yes, I’m a pansy, but torture as entertainment is more than my sissy stomach can handle.
On a lighter note, I finished Deadwood season 2, and I would just like to restate how much I love that show. Also, I got the Venture Bros. dvd set last Tuesday, and watched every episode when I got home. It’s HIGH-larious.

Ghosted by The Kraken @ 06/03/2006 10:37 PM EDT

"Darkside" DEFINITELY deserved more credit than it received. If it had the network backing of Crypt or Twilght Zone, look out! The episode "Seasons of Belief" has one of the most splendidly morbid endings in TV history. Kudos to the writers of this one. Beware the Grither!!!

Ghosted by Bludge @ 06/03/2006 10:46 PM EDT

Yeah, Hostel was terrible. Nowhere near as good as Cabin Fever. CF was great because it never took itself seriously, which seems to be what Hostel is doing. Too slow, not gruesome enough…just yuck.

Also, has anyone seen that Chinese bootleg of Revenge of the Sith? The one with the crazy subtitles? I really want one of those for my group’s next "Get Plastered and Watch Bad Movies" night.

Ghosted by Kyle @ 06/03/2006 10:54 PM EDT

Don’t know how many people are into the 4400, but I’m pretty excited that they showed it on an actual network tonight (NBC? ABC? Can’t remember). Not slamming USA or anything, but I definitely think there would be a greater following if more people knew about it. One more week to the season premiere! Whoo hoo! Oh, and if you’re a Sci-fi person and you haven’t seen it, you should check it out. That is all.

I am here for the SNT! Hooray!
Sometimes, like currently, people on the internet, both those I know in real life and only in cyberspace get so annoying and have no problem being cynical and bitter about everything and everyone that crosses their path. I truly feel that some think they are the only unique ones in the world and that everyone else is a conforming puppet. That really bugs me. It makes me want to listen to boybands out of spite. I love this blog, cause everyone’s lighthearted.
*steps off soapbox*
Happy Saturday!

Darkside really ruled. Everyone should follow JLA’s YouTube advice on that one — hopefully they have my fave episode, the one where girl-gets-stewed.

Kyle: Cabin Fever was definitely a more inspired effort from the director, and if someone can’t buy that, at least they can appreciate a scene where the kid from Boy Meets World fingers his way to TROUBLE.

Back to JLA: Regarding the Ecto Cooler recipe, was it for Ecto Ecto or some kind of cocktail? (There’s been an alcoholic beverage called "Ecto Cooler" for some time. Most Google matches bring that up instead of our Hi-C.)

Here I was refreshing the last thread ardently when there was a dandy new SNT thread right here!

Woot SNT!

Speaking of video games, anyone else waiting for the DS Lite to arrive so they can get their mits on New Super Mario Bros? I played the demo at Wal-Mart (on a Lite, no Less), and damn, that was the most fun I’ve had in a while…

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 06/03/2006 11:26 PM EDT

hostel is totally better if u

a) watch it ‘baked’

b) realize it’s a stoner/horror remake/parody of eurotrip

Ghosted by doc bong @ 06/03/2006 11:31 PM EDT

Did you say, Disney articles? As in more than one? If so, then i dodn’t really need to use the special phrase, because you already know what I’m thinking.

As for video games, I’ve been playing Zelda: The Minish Cap for the GBA. Not a bad game.

Say, Matt didn’t really specify a topic. SO we either need to come up with one or just talk about whatever random crap we want to talk about, in which case i will say: car dog chair fire hydrant slopy slime sik stupid hate weird can opener fire hydrant toilet. There. Those are my random crap for the day.

Ghosted by Nate @ 06/03/2006 11:34 PM EDT

Ideally the specific-topic survey threads are meant for weekdays, with the weekends being free-for-alls for everyone spending them bored like I am. But it can go either way. :)

The Disney feature is really just one article, but it’s so long that I need to divide it up into three pieces. (And really, on most sites, the first piece would be a ten page feature. I write too many words.)

I’m all about staying up all night tonight. I hate Sundays.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/03/2006 11:40 PM EDT

I wasn’t around for last week’s Saturday Night Thread, but I want to get my summer plans off my chestbowl anyway. A rare thing, it’s actually going to be interesting. I will be spending a month in…Nicaragua! Taking a field course in…Primate Behavior and Ecology! It’s not quite Disney World, but it does involve small mammals. Like Howler monkeys that want to throw their poop at you. :)

By the way, I’ve found that the movie Hostel is more effective if 2-second segments of the torture scenes are randomly interspersed within a totally different movie.

Ghosted by Venison @ 06/03/2006 11:40 PM EDT

I’m always here for the SNTs, even if I never actually contribute to them. I’m really excited about the upcoming Disney feature, just because it’s been waaaay too many years since I’ve been there (and I’m in Georgia, so I really have NO excuse).

Ghosted by Andy @ 06/03/2006 11:50 PM EDT

Well then we officially welcome you to SNT land, Andy. Don’t be afraid to speak up. I think most of us on here are pretty casual and use this space as a time waster instead of, I dunno, YouTube and PopCap. Lurkers, speak! :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/03/2006 11:52 PM EDT

new super mario bros looks NICE. i dunno if i’ll buy a ds just for one game tho

am i the only one who actually liked some parts of xmen 3 better than the others? i thought it had a darker tone that reminded me more of the comics, even if it didn’t stick to the storylines (none of the movies did anyway).. the opening danger room sequence seemed reminiscent of the ‘days of future past’ story arc, and then of course the dark phoenix story part and jean having to die, paying for her sins.

Ghosted by doc bong @ 06/03/2006 11:54 PM EDT

NATE! I’m totally playing The Minish Cap too. :D Umm, I’m stuck though. I can’t seem to find ummm… Mt. something or other… Ok I looked – I’m supposed to find Melari on Mount Crenel. I’ve been all over the damn place! :’( Do you have any recollection as to where it is?

Ghosted by Ryane @ 06/03/2006 11:56 PM EDT

Holy Christ, I just found Mount Crenel! I’ve been looking for this thing for ages. Stupid me never read the signs before, though. :/

Ghosted by Ryane @ 06/04/2006 12:32 PM EDT

Just buy the DS for New Super Mario. It’s totally worth it. Plus they have a ton of "pick up and play" oldschool types of games for it. The one where you draw Pac-Man on the screen is awesome.

Ghosted by kidnicky @ 06/04/2006 12:35 PM EDT

I want the Lite because of the brighter screen, that’s all. I actually like the look of the older one better – the new one looks cheap to me. Besides, I really don’t like the white so I’m going to wait probably another year until they bring out other colors. Until then, I will get my money’s worth out of my current DS.

Ghosted by Ryane @ 06/04/2006 12:44 PM EDT

I got the Venture Bros dvd set on thursday and it’s such a great show, and such a great set, but there’s commentaries on only 5 episodes and the pilot. I guess I got spoiled by the Robot Chicken set I bought last week which had 20 episodes, all with commentary.

In other Disney-article-waiting news, I’m thinking about starting a blog of my own. My only question is where do I start? I refuse to get myspace, because it’s evil, and I don’t know how the blogging sites work, or if I’d actually go through with it at all and just post in the confines of the SNT or any of the other NTs.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 06/04/2006 12:57 PM EDT

I got an import DS Lite a month or two ago (dark blue color), and it’s much better than the original. I was skeptical about it at first too since most of the appeal is in the brighter screens, but it makes a big difference.

I just played through the new Mario for the second time, and it just gets better each time I play it. It’s pretty great.

Ghosted by Gozer @ 06/04/2006 1:01 AM EDT

Invader Norbert

For a simple, no-nonsense blog, give the Google-owned Blogger a try. I used it with great success last year to chronicle my study abroad experiences (shameless plug: http://camerontalley.blogspot.com/). It’s free and easy to work with…

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 06/04/2006 1:05 AM EDT

Ugh, that’s weak. I’m about to go watch the horror/cult film "Parents". It looks really sweet and the premise rocks; hopefully it won’t disappoint. Even if it does, I have about 8 beers in the fridge. :)

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 06/04/2006 1:14 AM EDT

What do people think about the upcoming The Omen? Seeing currently-popular-young-blond actresses kind of turns me off, but I’m going to go see it anyway. Even if just for that scene in the trailer when the puppets at the carnival puppet show turn around to look at the hanging nanny.

Ghosted by Venison @ 06/04/2006 1:35 AM EDT

Myspace is evil, but so so addicting. It’s less evil feeling though knowing I’m not trolling it trying to add every hot chick I can find as a friend, like a lot of people do, and just using it for friends and general entertainment.

I need a DS and the new Super Mario Bros. BADLY, but I can’t afford to dent my Wii savings.

Ghosted by Andy @ 06/04/2006 1:49 AM EDT

I’m officially bored O.o Somone entertain me.

Ghosted by Rutir @ 06/04/2006 1:55 AM EDT

Okay, I’ll entertain you. JLA mentioned Tales From The Darkside on YouTube earlier. He wasn’t kidding. My favorite episode ever is there, and it hasn’t lost a step. Here’s Part 1, and here’s Part 2. Enjoy.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/04/2006 1:57 AM EDT

My goodness. I didn’t realize that would work. Thanks matt.

Ghosted by Rutir @ 06/04/2006 2:02 AM EDT

Matt, what are the odds? Your favorite episode of Darkside is on Youtube and so is mine! It’s the one I mentioned earlier… "Seasons of Belief." Everyone should check it out. Good stuff!

Ghosted by Bludge @ 06/04/2006 2:18 AM EDT

Hey I am looking forward to a picture of matt, with a cig hanging out of his mouth, with an unamused look on his face, with one arm around mickey, or goofy, or somebody like that.

I don’t have cable anymore so I spend a lot of time on youtube they have some really great videos, before you meantioned tales of the darkside I was looking at old tv intros, somebody put up a ton of old ones, then I stumbled apon full episodes of the wonder years. Neat.

Ghosted by Goob @ 06/04/2006 2:24 AM EDT

It will be several months before I am at a location that provides a decently fast internet connection, so I will unfortunately miss anything video-related on the internet–and it makes me pine for the days when this wasn’t an issue, and I got all my kicks from TV and LEGOS. Would I be talking about this if this wasn’t a nostalgia-related site? My self-consciousness questionings leave me no respite.

Ghosted by Venison @ 06/04/2006 2:25 AM EDT

Matt: The Ecto Cooler is the cocktail. I didn’t even know there was one until I read it in the paper.

The Grither one is my favorite also. Anniversary Party is pretty good, but I knew what the ending was five minutes in.

Other Darkside favorites:
A Case of Stubborns: A young Christian Slater and Brent Spiner.

Trick or Treat: The Pilot

Monsters in my Closet: A young Seth Green

Devils Advocate: Jerry Stiller

The Odds: Danny Aiello

Sorry, Right Number- Stephen King wrote it.

Grandma’s Last Wish
Yattering and Jack.
BTW, I didn’t know George Romero was the producer on Darkside.

But the creepiest thing I’ve ever seen isn’t from Darkside, but Monsters "A Bond of Silk." YIKES.

Just finished with Matt’s favorite, gonna check yours out Bludge =D I need to be a jerk and ask for people to entertain me more often O.o

I just woke up from a very deep dream. I won’t go into details but one part that stood out was these DVDs I bought. Each of them had an episode of the super mario super show and when you was done watching them, you could throw the dvd into some water and it would dissolve into fruit juice. I think there’s a market for this.

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 06/04/2006 2:28 AM EDT

Norbs, I am faithful to LiveJournal and recommend it to all. I even shelled out for a permanent account when they offered them but I have to admit if I was starting a brand new blog I would probably use Blogger. It’s got a more…professional? cooler? vibe, but LJ has the awesome icon angle going, plus you can get lots of syndicated feeds and any fandom crap you can imagine on your friends pages. It depends what you’re looking for in a blog, I think. If you want your friends to actually read it, MySpace is probably your best bet :/
(Any fellow LJers, drop me a comment in my journal :) )
I’m so glad The 4400 is coming back (it was NBC). I almost bought season 2 at Best Buy tonight, but I decided it didn’t have quite enough rewatchability. It’s an awesome show though and it’s definitely going to ease the Lost/Sopranos withdrawl pains.
I’m checking out those YouTubes as soon as this dang power outage is over. There’s tons of MST on there as well, in addition to all the awful "ghostride the whip" videos.

Have they released "Tales from the Darkside" on dvd?
There’s a bunch of episodes I would love to see.-

Late night commercial television is letting me know of a service that will text-message me jokes, that I can spontaneously use at my convenience to become the life of any party. I’m curious–does anyone know about these? Are the jokes really as terrible as I think they are? Send me your thoughts telepathically, because I am going to retire. Because I’m a retard.

i dunno if it was a tales from the darkside or not but an episode where an old guy refuses to die and parts of his face (like his nose) start to fall off?

Ghosted by doc bong @ 06/04/2006 2:43 AM EDT

This episode is so weird!

Ghosted by Joker @ 06/04/2006 2:46 AM EDT

I just saw Session 9 on Thursday. It’s a great horror film. It’s about an asbestos cleaning crew in an old mental hospital (great/creepy setting) and weird crap starts going down.
Don’t read anything else about this movie, because not knowing what’s going on exactly until the end really makes the movie. This is probably the only horror movie to creep me out and disturb me while watching it. It’s definitely worth a rental.

Ghosted by RewolfJ @ 06/04/2006 3:21 AM EDT

I would think that the hot tub ending would be more dramatic in Anniversary Dinner, the lights turning off, the water turning into a red bright water, and the tempature going way up, and seeing the girl, dead, on a platter like a turkey. Not just getting the poor girl drunk and start throwing in raw veggies. Wtf? I wish there was someplace where I could watch Tales of the Crypt, now THAT’S a great cheesy show, with a twist at the end.

Ghosted by Goob @ 06/04/2006 4:06 AM EDT

doc bong, there was indeed an episode of Darkside with that plot, it’s the one I remember most vividly.
An old man, notorious among his family for being stubborn, dies but refuses to believe it. Most of the episode is the family trying to convince Gramps that he needs to give up the ghost, but he remains unconvinced.
In the final scene the family is eating diner around the table when suddenly Gramps sneezes into his napkin. He stares at it for a moment, then slowly gets up, walks up to his bed, lies down and passes on. Curious, the family look in the napkin to see what it was that finally convinced him that he was indeed dead. In the napkin- Gramp’s nose.

The only TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE that I remember was the one with the little white demon. Scared the hell out of me.
Haven’t seen HOSTEL but I can tell you how much I hated Seed of Chucky. I have a lot of patience and tolerance for bad movies but I really, really hated everything about this one. I know some will say, "Well, what did you expect?". I don’t know but this wasn’t it.
