03/22/2006: Darth Vader Was A Decepticon.

It’s a match made in geek heaven. A marriage between Star Wars and Transformers. Two of the biggest perpetuators in keeping people from growing up, together at last. As Hasbro owns the rights to make toys for both franchises, they were free to commit to the most wonderful sacrilege ever by turning Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and other classic Star Wars characters into robots in disguise.

It works like this: Take a Star Wars character who has strong affiliation with a certain Star Wars vehicle. Make said Star Wars character into an action figure than can be transformed into said vehicle. Now, I’m sure some of you are thinking that there’s no way to do this without making both the figure and vehicle look really, really stupid. Put your fears to rest. Okay, they do look kinda stupid, but in all the right ways.

The vehicle forms are top notch, so much so that you’d have no reason to suspect their ability to transform if you didn’t notice the big “Transformers” banner on the bottom of the packaging. (Admittedly, they’re kinda clunky when you get them out of the package, but I’ve decided to overlook this.) The vehicle forms are reminiscent of the Kenner diecast vehicle line of the late ’70s/early ’80s, albeit larger and more plasticky. With price points above fifteen bucks, we’d of course demand something more than a few cool looking Star Wars vehicles. Our demands were met in a big way. The vehicles don’t just transform into Star Wars characters — they transform into totally Transformerized Star Wars characters.

Let’s use the Vader figure as an example. Starts off as a superfine Vader TIE Fighter, complete with tiny-sized Darth Vader action figure that fits perfectly in the cockpit. After transforming, the figure looks like the end result of Vader and Starscream fumbling through Brundlefly’s happy pod, with Vader’s classic mask being the only unaffected body part. Everything else, from his legs to his arms to his Dark Jedi groin, have been robotized to the point where Obi-Wan’s waxing about him “being more machine than man” now sounds duh-level redundant. While keeping the color scheme and trademark details of the Star Wars characters intact, the figures all draw from the much-loved template of any Transformers figure worth a damn, from big, blocky legs to fists that look like cute little pitted olives.

The still fairly new collection has already become pretty broad, with figures ranging from Anakin (transforms into his starfighter) to General Grievous (turns into a wheel bike). So yeah, they’re covering the original trilogy and the prequels, partly because Hasbro likes spiting purists, partly because Hasbro bigwigs are often just drunk enough to think that anyone would want a transforming Anakin.

They even made a Boba Fett, who might just be the best in the set, transforming from the CULT SMASH Slave-1 vehicle into a CULT SMASH Boba Fett, and the kicker is, in robot mode, the tiny Boba Fett figure that’s meant for the vehicle’s cockpit visibly rests just under the big robot Boba’s head. It’s a sea of Boba Fetts, with heads of different sizes and other CULT SMASH surprises.

What I’m digging most about the figures is my newfound reason to introduce the many nephews in my life to Star Wars and Transformers at the same time. Every time one of their birthdays come up, I’m gunning to bring them a little piece of me with Star Wars and Transformers toys. Problem is, Hasbro’s Star Wars line caters very much to collectors, and there’s very little chance of getting an “OH FUCK YES” out of a kid who wasn’t already enamored with the new movies. And the Transformers…well, whenever I try giving those out, the kids just cry at me when I can’t figure out how to make them work. With these figures, you don’t have to necessarily be in love with either franchise — they just look so damn cool and totally personify the progressively-becoming-lost glory of the plain old action figure. Having a Darth Vader figure go apeshit on the rest of your toys is one thing. Having Darth Vader go apeshit on your other toys before transforming into a plane and flying away to skirt reprimand is something else, and that something is “OH FUCK YES.”

UPDATE: Based on the comments, sounds like you’re more interested in CULT SMASH Fett than Vader. Check out the pics below…

Note the tiny Fett trying to assert himself from within the cockpit.

Thanks Matt! I was trying to save money, and now this. I’m going to Target right now. Literally. Hasboro should send you a check for referal

The best part of Darth Chef is, if Isaac apologizes and makes peace, then the boys can "Rescue" him. If not, then they have a credible villain that’s second only to Professor Chaos.

I am going to get Vader, General Grabass, Fett, Maul, and maybe Luke. I’m holding judgement on the others. Depends on how I think they might look among my regular TransFormers. I just bought Cybertron Optimus. Of the recent four versions of OP, this one’s my favorite, just edging out RID Prime. I need to go to some Flea Markets and such and find Megatron from RID and Armada, I’m kinda dissapointed by how Energon Megs turned out.

I bought the wheelbike that transforms into General Grievous for my son. Cool – yes, but it takes like twenty-three maneuvers to transform the damn thing…the instruction booklet is a thirty page manual. I recommend these toys for children with a degree in engineering…

Ol Norbert turns 19 Today! Whoo!

And I have yet to get any of the SW Transformers, because I lack the funds to do so.

And speaking of Vader, did anyone watch tonight’s South Park? Wow…just wow.

This isn’t really that new these things have been out since around Christmas. they’re on the 2nd or 3rd wave now. The Millenium Falcon is a Deluxe it’s Chewie and Han and they combine to form the falcon. It’s due out early summer.

"I agree the idea is sweet. However, I bought two of these when they first came out (Skywalker and Obi-Wan) and I was surprised how poorly made they are. These are definitely not as sturdy as recent Transformers, and the canons on Skywalker broke off on the first transform. I think these were rushed to market.

Will still buy Vader, but that’s about it.

Chestnuts roasted by Galvatron @ 03/23/2006 10:37 AM EST"

Just so everyone knows, that wasn’t me. I’m the original Galvatron that changed my name just in time for the Holidays. I believe that other one is from the comic book timeline that Unicron sends back with Hook, Line, and Sinker. Although, that whole thing still confuses me…

Anywho, being a huge TF fan AND SW fan, I really was not impressed with these toys. When I first heard about them, I almost creamed (I know, gross, but seriously, I almost did. Ok I really did…)

I just think they are ugly and really don’t do either franchise justice. They all look very fat and bloated. Very Armada Primish, and they’ve been out for some time. The TF Fandom has known about them for quite a while. As long as they sell and help propel both franchises, then I’m all for it. I just think they are ugly compared to even some of the G1 stuff, and especially the Binal/Alt line.

Now those are some great updated figures.

And the yellow Jeep is Swindle, fromt the Stunticons. They actually did a re-color of him, but I don’t remember who it was supposed to be.

P.S. That Mortal Peep Fight was hysterical!! I was laughing out loud, especially the ending "Fatalityyyyy….." line.

Cool, something nobody asked for, and didn’t want, now making two kinds of geeks bust a nut!

I think they look ridiculous, especially Boba Fett, whom I never thought was that fucking great to begin with…..

Ghosted by JA Huntsman @ 03/23/2006 2:51 PM EST

I tells yas, I must be getting old or something, because the apparent backlash against these figures is just totally lost on me. It’s not like they’re retconning existing lore, or even adding an out-of-bounds chapter to — they’re just figures. :) I can understand someone not liking them AS figures, but not liking them because they screw up some purebred great white story by existing? That’s just silly.

Ghosted by Matt @ 03/23/2006 3:03 PM EST

Yeah, you silly bastards!

Ehh … that’s the problem when dealing with purists. They truly enjoy pissing on any derivative joy you may get out of something like this.

Ghosted by LemurCat @ 03/23/2006 3:38 PM EST

I don’t agree with the complete hate for the toys. IMO, I think they’re ugly, and they just look silly, other than that, they do combine 2 of the biggest toy influences in memory together. I obviously won’t spend my cash on them, but if you like ‘em do it. Like I said, as long as they sell and further both franchises, then I hope people buy them by the boatload.

I think people need to realize that these toys are just that, toys. As such, made for kids.

Sad thing about all thee backlash is the people who are really complaining about them are adults…yup mostly grown men….

Ghosted by Darth Galvatron @ 03/23/2006 3:42 PM EST

I like the Darth Vader figure and will probably pick it up later today; the Fett figure looks pretty good, but I’m not a big fan of the character, so I probably won’t be getting that one since I’m not planning on collecting the entire series.
The Han and Chewie figues, in my opinion, are awful looking…but that’s just my two cents.
Not seen any good pictures of any of the other figures yet, so I’ll save my judgement on them. The Grievous figure, even though I don’t care for that character either, sounds promising as just that…a figure. It may be interresting to see how that one works.

I love transformers and all but what I really want to see is a Chewbacca Furbie.

I really have to say, I think this thread has taken a turn for the terminally strange today. Just a really weird vibe overall…

I agree, Matt. I mean, Jesus Christ people, it’s … A Tie Fighter turning into Darth Vadar! Of course he’s not going to look 100% perfect. I would love to see the haters do a better job, or even try to come up with something as creative.

Rhino — this article got on Fark, so we’re getting plenty of people outside the usual crowd. :)

not a geek, Darth Vader anything is probably pretty fail safe. Cool character and known by people who even never watched Star Wars, thus the most expected in the gift department.

Ghosted by dohopokie @ 03/23/2006 4:30 PM EST

I’ve loved the idea of these things since I first saw them in the store. Not entirely sure about the quality, I convinced a co-worker to buy some. He got Darth and Luke. I have to say, I’m really impressed with Vader…TIE and Robot modes. Luke… eh… not so much. But to find out that there’s a Boba Fett!!! Awesomeness!!! And a Chewie + Han combo?!!! HELLZ YAH!!!

Ghosted by bad karma @ 03/23/2006 4:41 PM EST

dohopokie , I still laugh everytime i see your name. :)

Ghosted by bad karma @ 03/23/2006 4:43 PM EST

There is only one Transformer I would love to own: The vacuumm robot from Spaceballs. SUCK SUCK SUCK! :)

Vader looks like he has a shield. I watched SP last night for the first time in a couple years. Not bad.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 03/23/2006 4:43 PM EST

SP was really interesting, not an attack on Issac, but on the "Fruity club that scrambled his brain." If someone calls the X that at my funeral, I’ll come back to life right then and there and yank their lips back over their head. Then go get a pizza.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 03/23/2006 4:49 PM EST

Holy snap…

Never since some guy with peanut butter and some guy collided in a flavor explosion have two things gone so bitchingly well together.

I want that Vader.

Ghosted by mtrox @ 03/23/2006 6:37 PM EST

South Park has been hit or miss for me the last few seasons, with the occasional gems. The last one I really dug was the fourth wall breaking newscasters episode. Maybe the new season will be back up at that level…sounds like last night’s was pretty good.
Welcome new people! Hang out, try some refreshing Kool-Aid instead of haterade. :)
I agree, Boba is bloaty but that doesn’t diminish the cool factor. Darth does pull off the look a little better. The chopper toys ARE kind of dumb, but I’m still laughing over the image of Vader calling up OCC to specify what kind of rims he’d like.

FIFTHTEEN DOLLARS!? Why don’t I just buy a speed boat and a dinosaur while I’m at it?

Ghosted by dohopoki @ 03/23/2006 7:13 PM EST

Just got back from Wal-Mart and Toys R Us, after picking up two of these figures. I must say I was disappointed with the Grievous figure, but I was most impressed with one I hadn’t seen any pictures of…Darth Maul. The two I got were him and Darth Vader. Maybe I just have some sort of Sithicon fetish…

Ghosted by Ragnarok @ 03/23/2006 8:24 PM EST

These look pretty pretty good, I wish I had a reason to get them

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 03/23/2006 8:58 PM EST

Would you guys STFU about all the "OMG IT SI A TRAEVSTY!!1" because they don’t officially follow every dimension of Boba’s waist and Vader’s jock? THEY’RE TRANSFORMERS, TARD FARMERS, NOT ANATOMICALLY-CORRECT STATUES.

Furthermore, all I have to say about the SW choppers is "NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!"

Ghosted by Red Machine D @ 03/24/2006 6:05 AM EST

Cool. Its like Transformers… but with Star Wars

Ghosted by skasem @ 03/24/2006 8:04 PM EST

I’ve seen these. Thought they were a cool idea. I’ve actually often thought how cool many different franchises based on characters with recognizable vehicles would be if they were transformerized. Like Jacee and the Wheeled warriors.
Hey, they did the one thing right that I was hopeing for.
The marvel toys where hero’s become…whatever the hell the designer could think of was horrible.
At least these are the actuall characters in Vehicles. Awesome. Incedentally, I just saw the Han/Chewie combo. I was to a greater degree a Trans fan and definately a Starwars Fan. Never really gave a crap about Han or Chewie or the Millenium Falcon. But those two are not only the best Transformery looking transformes (as I remember them) but look the best in general as robots. And they connect. Not up to Devestator levels but awesome. I might just have to have those. Ok, probably not, just Vader, but damn. Han/Chew look great.

Ghosted by spooky @ 03/24/2006 11:06 PM EST

That Han/Chewie set looks so good I won’t believe it until I see it in person, that looks like some really cool artistic rendering those toys are freakin awesome!!

Seriously I’m not even a toy person but I gotta have that set, I can only assume it’ll set me back $109384932104983240923.

Just in case it hasn’t been mentioned yet, these are VERY much like mecha. It is not a big jump from transformers to mecha when you see Boba Fett piloting the transformed Slave-1 like it’s a fucked up Mazinger.

Ghosted by The Undersigned @ 03/26/2006 12:47 PM EST

I think your posting of this entry has caused a shortage of these in Southwest Missouri or something.

I first noticed a fairly big selection of them at Wal-Mart a couple weeks ago but didn’t have any money to spare. Then this gets posted and I decide to go out this weekend and grab Vader – and of three Wal-Marts and one TRU I visited over the weekend, none of them had anything left but Luke.

And I wept.

Hmm…when I hit up Target for Robot Chicken and Kong tonight, these might be worht a look.

That Boba Fett is pretty darn funny-looking, though.

these would be perfect for my 6 day old daughter!

Ghosted by teletran2 @ 03/28/2006 4:41 PM EST

I hate those damn things. They should have done Star Wars vehicles that turn into Transformers characters. As it stands, the Transformers logo is needless, because the gimmick of transforming alone is not exclusive to that property. Anyway, I think they’re crap, but I’m glad that some people out there are appreciating them.

Wow. Just…wow. One of the oddest things I’ve ever seen. But as my husband is Fett-obsessed, it looks like I’ll be scouring every store that sells toys within a 100 mile radius to get one. Oh, and JLAJRC, I almost spit water all over my laptop when I read your Mega-Maid post. I’d buy one of those, that would be freakin sweet!
