03/12/2006: McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes, At Last!

Shamrock Shakes, they’re a beautiful green…the most beautiful green that you’ve ever seen! In somewhat of a Part 2 to my old St. Patrick’s Day guide, today I proudly yell from the rooftops that I finally, finally, finally found a McDonald’s Shamrock Shake, the triple thick, minty green seasonal treats that promise to make even us eyetallions lie and say we’re part Irish.

I live in Sioux Falls, SD. I happened to stumble upon this great article and agree whole-heartedly about the illusive Shamrock Shake. Luckly, hahaha, in Sioux Falls you are able to get the Shamrock Shakes readily and in great abundance. Even when the splended St. Patrick’s Day has passed they will dispense of the shakes. Just so you know Matt you are welcomed to visit Sioux Falls, SD durring the month of March. But please don’t hang around too long as I want some of the shakes for myself.
Thanks,
Ryan

I know exactly where you can find Shamrock Shakes. I live in Oklahoma, and we decided one day to head to the panhandle of Texas – en route to Amarillo to get some 6 point beer because we have that 3 point piss here. The first town on the border was a small podunk called Shamrock, TX. We managed to go to the McDonalds and what do you know, this is the first and only time we ever saw a Shamrock Shake. There it was, in all it’s Green Glory. I managed to dare to try one of those. We learned two lessons – almost all of West Texas is a dry county, and Shamrock Shakes make your poop turn a weird green.

According to my moles within the McDonald’s arcology, the Shamrock is, today, largely driven by franchise owners who have a personal affinity for or who’ve had powerful sales boosts with the Shamrock. The special gallon bottles of Magic Green Goo, which comprise the secret ingredient in the Shamrock, are a nonstandard item which must be special ordered. This is why if you are doomed to spend St. Pat’s day beyond the veil of civilization in Hong Kong, as I’ve done, twice, there is no Shamrock but there is a Taro, whose purple tint looks suspiciously like a frappeed Grimace.

The Shamrock Shake is alive and well in Lansing, Michigan. I’ve never had one… but I plan to.

Only 5 more days until I can have my first Shamrock Shake of the year! In upstate NY, it’s a time I look forward to annually.
Always a sure sign that spring is not far off. I will enjoy that minty goodness while biding my time for warmer weather….

Matt,

That was great! I am so glad that there are other fans of the shamrock shake. You see, you are correct regarding the hunt for the shamrock shake. I have three McDonald’s within a 2 mile radius of my house, I live by a mall. I go to one McDonalds and ask them if they have a shamrock shake, they say a what? A shake, what flavor? a chocolate shake, no a shamrock shake, A what shake??? But also, the secret to shamrock shakes, which you can make at home is mint extract. Not spearmint extract, but mint extract which is particularly hard to find and some green food coloring. So if you ever crave the shamrock shake, just go to the store and make one in your blender. It taste the same.

I really liked your musings on the Shamrock Shake Quest. Every year I start craving them about mid- February. I also have a really hard time finding them, but this year I found 2 different McD’s that had working machines. Ha! I have to psych myself out before I order because I’m always waiting for the moment of that feeling of being rejected when they tell me that their machine is down. This year I was lucky though. Irish lucky.

I live in Orlando, and yeah, lemme tell ya, Orlando McD’s LOVE Shamrock Shakes. Seriously, I’ve been to like 10 McDonald’s all around Orlando just to see if they have Shamrock Shakes, and I haven’t found one yet that didn’t have them. The McD’s closest to my house sucks though, because they put WAY too much minty syrup in the shake machine, and the shakes always end up tasting like frozen toothpaste. Actually, that McD’s sucks altogether. It’s a McDonald’s Bistro. And the other McD’s near my house is a McDonald’s Bistro as well. Orlando McDonald’s always have the oddball stuffs…

Haha, love the site and in particular I love this article. Imagine my surprise when picking up supper at McDonalds my sister exclaims, “Shamrock Shakes!” I don’t recall seeing any in the Wichita, Kansas area for years. Course I remember being a little kid and thinking that McDonalds had several different shakes. Don’t know how much was imagination or reality. Shake was pretty good though, I enjoyed it.

I wasn’t even aware that they didn’t sell them everywhere. In Wisconsin you can get them at every McDonald’s, and they even start in February. It makes me incredibly sad that they don’t have them everywhere.

I am dying for a shammarock shake. I was on the phone with my sister who was going through the drive-thru ordering my 6 yr old nephew a Shammarock shake last night. I was suprised when none of my co-workers had heard of them when I was telling them about my craving for one the next day. My co-worker went to McDonalds to get us all a minty treat, and McDonalds does not sell or has any idea what you are talking about in Raleigh, NC. I am soooooo bummed. Who do we need to write to, to get the shammarock shakes back?
