03/07/2006: Kamala, The Ugandan Website.

I’ve spent weekends starting at the computer wanting to write, having topics, having entire layouts for articles built and yet still unable to muster the inspiration to actually do it. And then there are other times, when I visit Kamala the Ugandan Giant’s website and get so impressed that I curse out my “no weekdays” rule and write a big, long tribute to it. For those who don’t know Kamala, he’s an old pro-wrestler slash headhunter slash, nowadays at least, soul singer. I don’t know why I felt the need to do this article. Blame dopey Tylenol PM; they’re the ones who came out with golden vanilla-flavored happy medicine.

Also, Nikolai Volkoff rocked ass. Whatever happened to that guy?
Who remembers the cartoon from like 1981 where Hulk and Nikolai were made friends to better kids’ Cold-War-international relations?

I STILL have toys from that cartoon.

Is he . . . singing to MIDI music?

I was just going to say that, Matt you really took it easy on his singing man. I hope to god that you were being really wry in not just DUMPING all over that music. The one on the intro page is about the worst thing that has ever been recorded. And all of his songs remind me of Kip’s "I love technology"

Great article on Kamala’s site. For the record, I still have a rubber Kamala figure from the 80s. He beats on Hogan from time to time.

Thanks for the heads up. I’ll be visiting the site myself.

I hate going through those dark phases of not being able to write anything as well.

I remember actually going to a WWF match at the San Diego Sports Arena in ‘86 (I think) to see Hulk Hogan vs. Kamala! I was there for Hulk, of course, and it was the first time I’d ever heard of Kamala.

The biggest upset of the year was Kamala actualy won the match! That’s right – Kamala beat Hogan! Then, in true WWF style, about 10 minutes after the match they announced that Kamala had been disqualified for some reason and the win was invalid.

They sure knew how to mess with a 12-year-old’s mind! I never did see the match on the air, but they did film it.

First time I saw Kamala was pre-WWF. I think it was the NWA or AWA or something like that – had Nature Boy Ric Flair as the heavyweight champ. Kamala’s one of those guys who looked like he was having the time of his life playing this weird, campy character. Heck, it looks like he’s STILL having all that fun!

My favorite is George "The Animal" Steele’s site: http://www.georgetheanimalsteele.com/slide-show/

He has some family photos up and I like to play "guess which one is married to George Steele."

It’s fun.

Retrocrush’s new podcast has a feature on this article.

Matt, you’re the man for running this site, but you made an error in the Kamala article.

His first ‘handler’ was named Friday. After Kamala left and came back for his 2nd stint in the WWF, they introduced Kinchee as his new handler.

Anyways, I don’t watch wrestling anymore (blame the McMahons), but I did have to chime in on this very important issue.

Cheers.

Wednesday’s from 6-9pm eastern.

crap crap crap.
see kids, this is what happens when you smoke pot.
you may have known about something at sometime, but it all comes out as confused horseradish on a lie sandwitch. Littered with crisp romaine retardation.

Loved the article. Ended up following the link and found the songs mellow enough to consider ordering the cd. 15 bucks. Answering the question "What are you listening to?" with the response, "The WWF’s favourite godless savage, Kamala, the Ugandan Giant" ….PRICELESS

Man… I vaguely remember him…

Though most of my memories of my WWF days are of Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker and The Ultimate Warrior (who was my personal favorite) and of cage matches and the perpetually terrifying Coffin Matches.

But, man… I do vaguely remember this guy.
