I have not watched more than 10 seconds of the Olympics this year, something I attribute mainly to the lack of a killer cross-promotional deal with a soda company.

the only olympics i’ve seen is the stuff my girl has tried to make me watch, maybe about 30 seconds worth.. how do people keep interest in this shit? ice skating and the shit where the 2 guys are laying on top of each other? gay.

it’s not only mind boggling to me that people can sit thru more than 5 minutes of this stuff, much less someone like my girl who will watch this crap everyday!

but to each their own she can’t understand how i watch nothing but horror movies and kung fu flicks

Canada is having our best winter Olympics ever, despite the horrible loss in men’s hockey. I think we’re 5th place overall..? 4th, maybe? Anyways, it’s great for us…although the 2010 Olympics are here in Vancouver, so now we’ve gone and set the bar really high for ourselves! Everyone will be hoping we do even better in 2010 when the Games are on our home turf.

(*I’ve watched a lot this year because one of the Canadian Olympic skiiers is from my hometown of 4,500 people! It’s a pretty big deal for us. We have nothing else going on- see the last thread. An hour drive to ANY fast food restaurant!)

I would also like to give a big "fuck you" to last week- I was SICK as a dog, and even spent two work days on the couch. Damn students and all their germs.

Ugh, the Canadian men’s hockey team. I knew we were going to suck when the team was announced. Such a dumb idea to keep guys on the team who were having a terrible NHL season just because the team won gold 4 years ago. A lot can change in 4 years, but apparently it took not even making the medal round to prove it to SOME people. Curling was alright, apparently 6 points in one end is really good…

Aside from that, I’m not around much tonight because I get to go see Eight Below. I have high hopes as I love Homeward Bound. I’m not kidding, that movie is awesome. If anyone else can appreciate that movie, it’ll be someone here.

I’ve been astonishingly worthless this weekend.
I totally hear you. I set my son up with a bowl of cereal and cartoons at 6am this morning and laid awake on the couch motionless till ten. I usually have a one cartoon per sitting rule and that was totally blown.
Also, spring training games start this week. Baseball is the only sport I ever get into and I am excited. Plus there’s a game on nearly every day and tickets are like 5 bucks.

I’ve been horribly sick since last Wednesday. I did manage to pick up the first wave of the Beast Wars reissued figures. Here’s a tip, don’t try to loosen up Trans-Mutate’s hip. The leg broke right off :(. I’ll get around to fixing when I get better.

I’m home now. I’ve been watching the hockey. I, too, am really psyched about the return of baseball. According to the PR, I’m supposed to get tickets before the bandwagon does. But I’m broke, so I guess the bandwagon has the advantage in this particular transaction. Although I’m pretty [meh] about the World Baseball Classic. Hmm… I guess this post has been pretty random and ultimately pointless. Sorry about that.

And I don’t know who mentioned House of the Dead 2, but me and one of my friends made the mistake of watching that movie two weeks ago. I haven’t seen the first, but it [the sequel] was fucking horrible–easily one of the shittiest movies I’ve ever seen. Jaws is on the History Channel as part of their "Reel to Real" programming block. They show the movie, then follow it up with a special on real-life events that inspired or are similar to it. In Jaws’ case it’s the shark attacks of the early 20th century.

I hate it when people say that all the history channel shows is stuff on the Nazis. They have some stuff on the Japanese too. Speaking of Nazis I was down in Hicksville visiting my racist relatives when I got sick last week. A couple days before I got sick I was searching various antique stores and I found a "Natzi" medal. Not Nazi but Natzi. That is what the little piece of paper by it had written on it. If you’ve ever seen Squid Billies, that is what the town is like.

Darren McGavin died, too? Oh man, what a horrible month. I just found out earlier this month that BOTH the dad and granddad from Pauly Shore’s finest, "Son-In-Law" have also died.

So, in tribute to them, and also because March Break is appraoching and ALSO because we just finished a book about farming, I am showing "SON-IN-LAW" to my grade 9 English class. They are LOVING it! And a surprisingly large number of them had never heard of it. I like introducing things like that into their lives…we also studied video games this year and I showed them "THE WIZARD".

Despite being a Canadian the NY Rangers are MY TEAM! (I retired there with Gretzky after following his whole career) and I KNEW how great Lundvquist was, even before the gold medal. Screw Kevin Weekes (he was supposed to be their #1 goalie this year)- he sucks! I love this Henrik Lundvquist- plus, he’s still a ROOKIE! All right.

Jeez, this is the best thing that could have happened… except for Canada winning the gold themselves.

I just dropped by to see what’s up. I chimed in with my Olympics opinion last week, though I do want to add that I really hate the design of this year’s medals. I think I’d feel really gypped to work my whole life for a gold medal that has a big hole in the middle. I’d feel like someone owed me a little gold. Maybe Krispy Kreme was a major sponsor this year and I missed it.

SciFi channel is showing lots of silly monster movies today. If anybody is interested I’d highly recomend watching the repeat of Grizzly Man that’s on Discovery channel this evening. It’s loooong (and really tough to watch at times), but
a. that’s what DVRs are for (no commercials what what)
b. it’s not like anything you’ve ever seen, even if you’re a former Animal Planet/Nat Geo junkie like myself, probably because it’s less about the animals than it is about a man trying to escape the world. If you loved the old Animalia articles you HAVE to catch it.

I could barely watch that Grizzly Man thing. Everyone that was interviewed who knew whatshisface before he was eaten was hollow and even the coroner acted like it would be his big break into showbiz. I got home late last night, and Don Knotts was the first thing I saw, and I kid you now, I screamed "DAMN YOU! DAMN YOU ALL TO HELL!!!!!" Jeez, I was suprised he lived as long as he did. I’ll always have my reruns of Andy Griffith, Three’s Company, random Scooby-Doo episodes, and that one episode of Johnny Bravo where he, Weird Al, and the Blue Falcon makeover Johnny’s show.

And why kill him when people like Jay Leno & Carrot Top still roam this Earth?!

On the plus side, Abe Vigoda turned 85 this week!

And I saw Curse of the Were-Rabbit on opening night: Awesome as hell. I hope it wins the oscar for Best Animated Feature.

I liked Grizzley Man, the big problem with it is that they took a documentary that’s just slightly over 100 minutes and stretched it out to three hours. Commercials every two minutes practically. Same reason I refuse to watch "It’s a Wonderful Life" and various other movies when they show up on basic cable or network.

Frankly, I think it was the best documentary last year (haven’t seen Aristocrats but want to). Too bad it wasn’t nominated. March of the Penguins was a glorified Animal Planet special and most of the people in Murderball got on my nerves FAST! Plus very little of the actual sport was shown.

DP, I totally agree about the coroner, he really gave me the creeping willies.
Was at Michael’s and they’ve got a bunch of notepads and magnets and bric brac on clearance with the old Kellogg’s mascots on them…I got a notebook with Coco on it.
Just finished watching a repeat of the last Sopranos ep…only two weeks until the big premiere!!! Not so sure about this new Big Love show but I don’t think I’ll be able to resist watching.

I can sort of understand not assenting to He-Man, Fraggle Rock, or Thundercats: there’s a certain amount of nostalgia value that exponentially increases the enjoyment of those shows. However, the Muppet Show is timeless. I say, tie people down and force them to watch it, a’la A Clockwork Orange.

P.S. If I had ninth grade teachers that showed me The Wizard and Son In Law, I would probably not have bullshitted my way through high school. Amazing work!

At the moment I pretty much have NO friends. I have one good friend I used to hang out and watch One Piece and bad hentai with, but she’s been busy for months taking care of her grandmom. My guy friend I never see because his fiancee is insanely jealous and, well… rightfully so. I can never manage to keep friends! The last friend I had to watch Fraggle Rock with moved away years ago. I usually just chalk it up to my being so eclectic and kinda living out in the middle of Nowhere, PA.

mtrox: Thanks for the kind words! I always kind of have a "reason" for showing the films, in case the principal ever gets on my case. Our book was about a farming family, so ‘Son-In-Law’ seemed appropriate.

I also teach an ethics class, and there is NO textbook or curriculum guidelines for this class- I completely make it up as I go along. SO, I decided to have a unit looking at violence in video games, and how this has changed over time.

This led to a study on the history of video games, the development of gaming graphics and violence in games (**We had an ULTRA COOL day in class where I hooked up 2 TVs- one with a Super Nintendo WWF Royal Rumble game, and the other TV had a PS2 Smackdown game; so we could easily compare the difference in graphics and gore)

I ended the unit by having the kids design their own (non-violent!) video games, complete with instructions booklets and game jacket designs. It was swell.

Then, we watched "THE WIZARD"

Basically, I teach them what I like! ;) I love corrupting them and showing them things they SHOULD see in life, like Fred Savage’s greatest movie.

Yeah, he isn’t the responsible for the nostalgia overload but the guy has been a pioneer for almost 6 years. Where is his TV appearance? I KNOW that the "I LOVE THE HOLIDAYS" was a rip-off of the Halloween and Christmas countdowns on X-E.
I was having a good weekend until I read some of these posts. Seems like everyone was pretty listless. Plus, the loss of Mr. Limpet (which I knew about) and the "Old Man" (which I just found out reading this blog), I am now officially depressed.

I watched VH1 Classic’s 4 hour marathon of one-hit wonders. Most of them were junk, mixed in with the classics we all love "Oh Mickey, you’re so fine, you’re so fine you blow my mind."

I took an ethics class in college. It was basically take any issue and look at it from both sides. It came with a small book. It was actually very boring. It was mostly a lecture class.

How much Dane Cook do you get in Waiting? I loved Ryan Reynolds in Van Wilder but need another motivation to sit through a whole movie, especially with the demotivating Milonakis factor.
Lost is a pretty amazing show, I think it has something for everybody…though I read an article recently that called it "cult" which I didn’t quite understand. How can something that’s hugely popular (in it’s own time) be "cult"? Maybe there’s a broader meaning of the world than what I have in mind.
Did you know they’re launching a French version of The Office? And did anybody shell out the $$ to get the new costly Ricky Gervais podcast?

Cereal on my mind so heres whats in my pantry and a little about each one:

Berry-Flavored Lucky Charms - not as good as the original flavor, although I have yet to eat the chocolate ones.

Mini Swirls Cinnamon Buns - this one tasted great, but each cereal piece looks like something fido left on the porch. The fudge ripple version is even worse looking , but I have not tasted it.

Post Raisin Bran - a classic

Frosted Mini Wheats "Strawberry Delight" - this is ok , compared with the "vanilla creme" one which was horrible.

A-Team Puffs: I can think of the tagline now: "4 Rogue Vietnam Soldiers after escaping from incarceration for a crime they didn’t commit after a long battle with Quisp and Boo Berry, decide to deal with breakfast hunger their own way. Today, still wanted by General Mills, they survive as marshmallows of fortune. If no other flakes could satisfy you, and you can find a box, maybe you could eat…The A-Team Puffs!" You put the cereal in milk and you hear "I PITY THE FOOL WHO DON’T EAT THIS WITH BANANA!" Also, the marshmallows are shaped like BA’s pendants and the kickass van.

Also, I got one for Paris Hilton. The boxed is $130 more than it’s worth, there’s only ernough cereal for 1 bowl, and you get a different STD whenever you bite into it.

Fair enough :) There is a lot of cliche’d stuff, and a lot of kids’ stuff(although that can be enjoyable on a certain level), but there’s just as much original and well-done.

Don’t misunderstand, I’m not trying to convince you of anything. You say you’ve given a few different shows a chance, and it’s just not for you, so I respect that. Trying not to sound too much like a geek, you’ve mislabeled anime as a genre, when it’s actually a medium, like film, radio, or television, although obviously there are things that fall into multiple categories: animated films, TV-movies, etc.

I suppose I’ve rambled enough, especially over something so petty as semantics!

Indeed! Just finished the series this week, and it’s definitely one of my fav’s. It might even dethrone Gungrave, my previous fav. My favorite episodes were the one with the gay blonde guy masquarading as a Japanese, and the one with the guy who had another guy following him around everywhere and beat-boxing.

What kind of films or television shows do you like? Anime has just as wide a variety as either of those two mediums. Unless someone just can’t get their head around the fact that it’s animated, there really is something for everyone. Drama, Comedy, Action, Horror, Mystery, Fantasy, Sports, Suspense/Thriller, Romance, Sci-Fi, and everything beyond or in between.

The animation does nothing for me (although this is a complaint with anime in general), it seemed entirely gratuitous with no real point (despite the poor attempt at politics they jam into their violence). And I’m no naysayer to senseless violence–like the rest of you, I own the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street boxsets–but they always seemed like the fun kind of pointless violence to me, whereas Akira just bored me.

I have nothing against animated things (although I would consider most of my animated stuff shit if it weren’t qualified with the exponential nostalgia factor). I won’t rule out anime, but I have enough on my plate without it (haven’t had the chance to watch a movie in theaters since December and out of theaters since mid January).

I wasn’t trying to imply that you were writing off anime simply because it’s animated(anime happens to literally translate into "animation," as that’s all it is). Sorry if it seemed that way. I meant that statement in general, as there are a lot of people who equate animation with kids/crap.

I understand about the "being too busy" thing! There are very few movies released in the theatres that I care enough to pay out that much money and time to see. Whenever David Lynch gets around to finishing his current project, I’ll see that one for sure, but otherwise the theatre isn’t really my scene. Too many rude people!

If you end up with some extra time in the future, and still have an open mind about watching some anime, Samurai Champloo might be an excellent starting point, if you like action/comedy/drama. If you watched a couple episodes and decided to stick with it, you would find that the character development and over-arching story of the series is every bit as attractive as the over-the-top violence and fighting. I’ll put my machismo on the line and admit that I was very near tears during the last episode.

If you’ve bothered to click on my name, you’re probably not surprised to hear me going on at length. I’ll stop now, though.

I wouldn’t listen to action, fantasy or sci-fi on the radio as I don’t feel radio does those genre’s justice, just as I wouldn’t watch any of those through anime as I don’t feel the "medium" does anything justice. I don’t understand how you can make a claim that there is no possible way for animation to do any of those genres I mentioned justice. It’s irrational, but it’s your right to feel that way.

Haha. I understood the conceit there, but thought it was stupid.

I enjoy movies across the spectrum–comedy, action, horror, drama. Not a big sci-fi fan (Star Wars is about as "sci-fi" as I get, I hate the Trek, Dune sucked, sci-fi generally bores me in any medium).

I never saw Ghost.

And another point I meant to address: Poopy, you mentioned "near real-life animation". Generally the quality or realism of animation does nothing for me. I’d rather watch twenty well-written movies with the animation quality of season-1 Simpsons than one well-animated movie that is awful.

I agree that an excellent story can overcome sub-par animation(or film quality/technique, for that matter), but that the opposite is much more difficult to achieve. Not impossible, mind you. Generally speaking, though, I’d rather watch one well-written series than twenty well-written movies(unless they’re sequels, but then they tend not to be well-written). I really like the expanded character development, background, and everything else that comes with (typically)26 25-minute episodes as opposed to 1 2-hour(or less) movie. Which explains my less-than-uber-manly reaction to the last episode of Champloo. It’s got style and attitude oozing from its pores, but there is also substance and a pretty touching story behind all that.

Yes, dohopoki, I know you still don’t like anime. That’s a joke.

If it’s the art style of some anime that bothers you, I’d suggest taking a look at Gantz or Gilgamesh. Their overall styles are something of a departure from your typical anime art direction. Both have less of the caricaturization you seem to detest, and Gilgamesh has a very non-typical washed-out look. Those would be the first two suggestions that spring to mind for someone who has an open mind, but isn’t a big fan of the typical big-eyed caricature look.

Anime*, and secondly, it is certainly possible but I watched anime from the age of 5, long before DBZ was talked about at school, all the way up to my senior year of high school and can’t say, with my current opinions, I could name a good anime I’ve seen for every genre you mentioned.

Anime is animation. That’s all it is. If you were in Japan, and asked for an anime, you’re just as likely to end up with a Disney flick as you are Naruto. It sounds like you’ve decided you’ve outgrown anime(since you apparently were a fan for 13 years) and are just to "cool" for it now. Which makes me wonder either why you watched it for so long if you despise it so badly, or why you haven’t done the same thing with the subject matter of X-E, which would also refer to things in the same time period of your life. You’re an enigma!

As far as "finding a good anime for every one of thos genres" is concerned, why bother? For one thing "good" is supremely relative. Secondly, I don’t like romance that much, so why would I even try to find a good romance anime? Or movie? Or book? It’s pointless. I like what I like, and you dislike what I like ;) My point with the radio was just another attempt to point out that simply because you feel a certain medium doesn’t do justice to a certain genre, that doesn’t mean everyone feels that way. You seem to think they should.

I have a proposal: how about we agree to disagree, and leave it at that? We’re getting nowhere.

You’ve got the wrong impression on me by far. I never said you shouldn’t like anime. I’m just defending the possibility of hating anime despite the fact that it hits every genre.

As for Anime vs animation, I realize it can mean the same thing but when I say anime, I think everyone here knows the distinction between what i’m talking about and what i’m not. I’m not in Japan so I can say Anime and just mean that style of cartoon that comes from overseas.

Finally, growing to hate one thing that i’ve been exposed to doesn’t mean I don’t love Transformer toys and TNMT coloring books.

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy started as a radio play. But with Britain being the size it is, it’s easier to do radio shows that a whole country can tune in to. People didn’t like the album ’cause it wasn’t quite like the radio show. People didn’t like the book ’cause it wasn’t quite like the LP. People didn’t like the TV series ’cause it wasn’t quite like the book. People didn’t like the movie ’cause it wasn’t quite like the TV series. Then, when they came for me, there was no one left to speak up…. *?* huh? I think I skipped a groove. I was supposed to have a point, but I think I just chopped it off. Hours ago I was going to post the following but didn’t have enough time: It drives me nuts when people say "anime sucks" because it’s like saying "movies suck" or "books suck" but I just find it to be a fruitless debate so I don’t bother.
I should’ve posted it, might’ve saved some headaches
I could see why Akira might not appeal to everyone…the animation doesn’t look that great by current standards and the plot is a bit of a mess. Don’t flame me Poop, I’m just playing Keanu Reeves here, I enjoy it myself.
Anybody see Tokyo Godfathers? After seeing it I remember thinking that it could easily have been live action, though it wouldn’t have been as charming. Lately I’ve started watching Bleach. I’m about 10 episodes in and like it pretty well but wouldn’t recommend it to haters to overcome the hate as it’s a bit cliched. I’d recommend Blue Gender for haters, but Adult Swim apparently takes all the good bits out so it’s all about the DVD for that one. And everybody should watch Samurai Champloo, though I can’t attest to the quality of the english dub.
kingklash? People hated that movie because it was so bad it sucked funny out of the world. For reals.

Lolz anime dr4m4!

I used to wear my anime fandom on my sleeve, but not so much anymore. I guess the negative connotations of being an otaku finally hit stateside. Don’t get me wrong, I still have a good 600 some VHS/DVD/VCD of anime. I just don’t cling to anyone I meet that likes anime anymore cuz some of the fuckers are scary. Ever seen the Fanime Con videos? Yikes. Once in college this guy started literally circling me because I was wearing a Witch Hunter Robin shirt I aquired by selling my soul to Bandai. Keep in mind this was way before it was on CTN. Then he was all, "We have manga club at B&N joooiiiiinnn us!" And then I ran to class. ;.;

But I do still watch, just not as actively as I used to. I just got all of Wedding Peach, though, and I totally plan on turning my brain into complete and total pink mush.

I’ve also seen all 200 episodes of Sailor Moon subbed. ^_^
