AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!
Had to be said.
I didn't get my man anything for V-day nor did I recieve anything. Course our relationship is a little f-ed up anyway on account of his job being what it is, but that's not really his fault. We're sort of putting off all celebrations until things are sort of settled. But at least unlike Christmas he won't be spending this holiday in a ditch in the middle of the desert. ^_^

I love how the Seed Of Chucky lists the stars as Chucky, Tiffany, Jennifer Tilly, and THEN Redman. He got pwned!
I thought I'd have my usual Valentine's Day Depression-fest because of how "tragicly single" I am.
But after renting two movies with family, I'd say I had a pretty good time today. All thanks to more-or-less ignoring V-day.
Anyway, Matt, any chance of a review of "Dolls"?
King Kong escapes is awesome, I don't think it's been reviewed here either.

my girlfriend hooked me up with some candy - candy, candy, candy. And 2 tickets to a Flyers game in March against the nj devils. I took her to a nice dinner downtown, got her some of her fav candy, and the 2nd season of x-files.
I worked 11 hours non-stop yesterday. Then I came home and watched "The Changeling" for the first time. So basically my valentines day was sad.

I got the new Stephen King book(Cell) and the new Belle & Sebastian cd. Good stuff. Gave the woman a plush frog with a heart on its ass, three plush roses, a 2.5 oz bottle of her favorite perfume, and a card of course. I drew on the envelope with crayons and she thought it came that way. I had to tell her I drew on it! We got takeout from a Japanese/Korean/Chinese place we recently discovered. The sushi is excellent, and the presentation is awesome. Who wants miso?

I got my husband the criterion collection edition of Seven Samurai, he got me flowers, which may not be remarkable in any other case. However, since he usually waits until the occasion's evening and takes me to Giant Eagle to pick through the leftovers, I was happy when he snuck out in the morning to buy them, along with chocolate covered-pretzels.
ZiZak:
Let me know what you think of the new Belle and Sebastian CD. It definitely takes a little more work to get into than any of their previous efforts, in my opinion, but I dig it all the same. Better than Dear Catastrophe Waitress, but not up to the level of If You're Feeling Sinister or Fold Your Hands…

God I love New Order… I don't have International, how is that?
I do however have Item- a 2 dvd set- one a documentary on Joy Division/New Order, and the other a collection of all thier videos… which should be much cooler than they are. The vid for Confussion is awesome, but the rest are just kinda ehhhh.
Matt are you a fan of the and the Cure as well? Depeche Mode? They all kinda go hand in hand.

Lou @ 02/15/2006 9:53 AM EST
Friday 13th prequel. That should be cool. Or like other recent horror movies it could suck. I hope it kicks ass.
Friday the 12th: the day before death.
That was supposed to say The Smiths and The Cure.

I brought up the new F13 at the tail end of the last thread. I'm sure it will be interesting and will see it but I have to admit I'm much more gleeful about Grindhouse, the new Robert Rodriguez/Quentin Tarantino double feature. No clue when they're releasing it but it's sure to be great.

I've listened to the new B&S about 3 times through, and I have to say I like it. I didn't discover them until Dear Catastrophe Waitress, which I really liked. I don't own any of their previous albums, and the "sample" listening I've done in record stores didn't grab me like DCW did. I'm sure if I bought them I would get into them, I just don't have the funds or the drive right now.
My first reaction was that the new album is less "poppy" than DCW. After the second listen, though, I decided it is still poppy, but it's more inline with "classic"(50's and 60's) pop than modern pop. And, compared to DCW, it is extremely piano-heavy and much less produced. More natural, for the most part. I was trying to talk to the wife about it(she didn't care for most of the songs on DCW), and she just said "It sounds like that other cd you have," so that was a pretty fruitless conversation. My favorite song so far is the one that says "I left my lady in the launderette, you could put some money on it, you could place a little bet".
I hope I haven't bored anyone to tears yet.

ZiZak @ 02/15/2006 10:46 AM EST
Belle and Sebastian rock in a really fun way. When I discovered them on Rhapsody I was so impressed I immediately put them in my playlist rotation.
I'm happy (not bored to tears) to see an mini album review here.

Posted by
Carri @ 02/15/2006 11:01 AM EST
Not bored here. It's definitely a whole different sort of animal than DCW. Everything before DCW was incredibly minimally produced, and as such may not suit a newer fan.
The song you reference (The Blues are Still Blue) is one of my favorites as well–also, Funny Little Frog, Dress Up In You, and Another Sunny Day).
But I'll stop bringing up something about which very few people reading Matt's blog care. Uh…peeps and Turtles.

Wouldn't the Friday The 13th Prequel be titled Thursday The 12th?
If it's not the real title, it should be.

For the wife: "Disorderlies" on DVD, Detroit Cobras CD, chocolate Care Bear, Hello Kitty kids book
From the wife: Belle & Sebastian/New Pornographers tickets
Then we watched "The Right Connections" starring MC Hammer and all of Melissa Joan Hart's siblings. (She appears briefly as a taxi driver.)
All in all, a pretty kickass day.

The stark contrast in production levels between their two latest definitely surprised me. I've nothing against "natural" sound, and will eventually invest in B&S's back catalog. My favorite sounds, though, I guess I would define as "overproduced, but gentle." Examples would be stuff like Grandaddy, Super Furry Animals, and B&S on DCW. Of course, those are just generalities, my actual taste is much more varied than that.
Oh yeah.. umm… the awesomest thing ever would be if Peeps made Ninja Turtles shapes and froze them on a stick popsicle style.

One word: Awesome.

Very cool. My "woman" bought me a business card holder w/my name engraved on it. Sweet.
Due to previous financial obligations, my V-shopping has gots to be this Friday. It was either that, or keep a roof over my head and cable on my TV. Ma and Army Sis are getting discounted chocolate!

All I can say is ya-freakin-hooo! This was the last of the parties my second grader had to have treats for. Fortunately I wan't in charge of this one, I was tired of coming up with those kiddie games. I just hope when my daughter is grown she will say "yeah, my mom always brought stuff to my school parties and played games and danced with us." More likely than not though she'll be saying it to a therapist because she's embarrassed that her mother did those things. I'm not sure when I lost "cool". I may never have had it. Oh well the husband and I are going away for a week so maybe I'll recoolify myself.

Only things I got for V-day was $20 from the mom, and a generic Valentine card w/ lollipop from a friend of mine that gave em to everyone she knew.
Alas, I havent gotten the Jones Love Potion #6 yet, but I will in the next 2/3 days!
But for a V-day card from Me to you, click my name.
Friday the 13th prequel, hopefully it will rock. Also with the TCM prequel. That should make for a pretty good Halloween Countdown!
I still push forward with my original vendeta in the last thread. Matt, we need a ninjas of our past article, with none other than Surf Ninjas, 3 Ninjas, TMNT, various Nintendo masters of the silent art of ninjitsu. Am I forgetting any?

I can't really get into new B&S. Their first three albums (along with the EPs that were released in between) were just magical.

I got a rose (1st one in 4 years! Whoot!) and I gave him a case to hold his poker chips and cards. Then, we went out for a romantic dinner and came home and watched "The Constant Gardener"- GREAT movie, by the way.
Not a bad V-Day.

I'm single, but I had a nice Valentine's Day, anyway. I got to see my older cousin and meet her kids, and my uncle made an Orange Dreamcicle cake and a chicken dinner for my sister and I. I also recieved a cute card and $5 from my uncle; he gave my cousin's kids and my sister cards and $5, too.

I've always despised Valentines Day, because it's four days before my birthday. So as a tribute to my own hatred, yesterday I texted all my friends and relatives with a message stating Happy "Four days til my birthday" Day. As far as the misses, I was going to get her something, but as I entered Wal-Mart and took note of their massive last minute Valentines gift display, I instantly got revolted at the idea of taking part in the commerce madness.
Why is all this text underlining itself on mouseover?

Let me just start by saying that I have been visiting X-E for about 5 or 6 years now (since around 2001 I think) and I am pretty new to the blog. Just never really got into it until about a month ago.

So for Vday my hubby and I got the day off with being new parents, and did the old Mc Donalds thing, then we went to a store called Thats entertainment, and we bought a shit load of NES games, and a gameboy. After all that we went to see Hoodwinked, I enjoyed it I was happy they had music, new cartoons dont have songs anymore.

So who ARE Belle and Sebastian anyway?
Clancy Brown showing up on Lost is almost overpoweringly cool…Now it's time for a big Project Runway ep. Last week's loser made an outfit that Michael Kors called "a Golden Girls jacket that you belt and wear with leggings". Which might not necessarily be considered insulting around here, but was definitely meant to be a real ice burn.
Man.. Mine was pretty good.. :3 I got my girl some nice gifts.. sides the roses, and a catplush that says your purrfect, plus matching baloon, I got her a beautiful carved amethyst stone geode thats also a candleholder, Carved bck about 80$ and knowing her birthday's this sunday, >.o im taking her out friday to play some ddr ness, then taking her out to eat at a japanese restraunt, The little lady got me The Advent children necklace and ring set, at which im wearing the ring now, she accidently broke the necklace ._.;

Tetsu:
Belle and Sebastian is a British band that gets a lot of their inspiration from the 60's and 70's. I don't think they have music on their official site, but it should be easy to find samples on Amazon and MySpace…
Ah yes, click my name.

FOX- Just read the Photog blog, eh? Yeah, I remember my first time
My eyes were red and dried out, my head was spinning and I was delighted with the whole thing. Welcome!
The only Belle & Sebastian song I know is "Dylan in the Movies"…that WAS them, right? Also, they are coming to Montreal in March- a friend of mine is going, and I was thinking of trying to tag along…nothing makes me convert to a band more than a good concert.

I was "awesoming" your comment about how the F13 prequel should be titled Thurday the 12th. It's so obvious that no one else thought of it(or said it at least), which makes it all the more awesome that you pointed it out. Plus, it's the kind of joke that would elicit a groan, eyeroll, and possible a slug on the arm from my wife.
Awesome.

Kingklash's quiz DID put me on the crew of Serenity second though, which made me very happy. My roomate's Firefly DVDs got me through my year of watching Korean television- what a wicked show.
Does anyone know if Joss Whedon has started the second story arc for 'Astonishing X-Men' yet? I bought all of the first 12 issues he did (Wow- Amazing. Loved them), and haven't seen any new ones yet…

Tetsu deinonychus: So who ARE Belle and Sebastian anyway?
Belle is a jaded, hard-nosed cop with a heart of gold and retirement in view. Sebastian is her new naive, carefree partner. And did I mention that he's a 3 year old chimp? Tune in to see their zany misadventures five nights a week on "Ape Patrol", where crime is no "monkey buisness"!
This week's episode: Belle just installed a new state-of-the-art security system at her upper-west-side apartment, but she accidently left the password with Sebastian! When Belle becomes a prisoner in her own home, will Sebastian be able to figure out how to turn off the security system, or will he just throw his feces around? Special guest star: William Daniels (as the voice of the security system).
