02/13/2006: Black Cherry Vanilla Coke.
For a few week stretch a few weeks back, every bus ride into work brought me the sight of a gigantic billboard promoting Coke’s new “Black Cherry Vanilla” flavor, and of course, I knew that the time would come. That time was tonight. While I have nothing but love for the collective insanity of soda companies over the past few years, I can’t let that love silence my taste buds: I really don’t dig this stuff. I can envision children liking it, because it tastes more like candy than soda, but as something that I tried to wash down old Beefaroni with this evening, nyyyyah think I’ll pass. Tastes more like cherry-enhanced cream soda than cherry/vanilla Coke, and therein lies the problem: I detest cream soda. Like, if the guy who invented cream soda caught fire and asked me for help, the only reason I wouldn’t spit at him is because saliva could conceivably make a fire less intense. I’m a bit bias. If you like cream soda, you’ll probably like this more than I did.

Saw a promo for Pepsi’s 1992 Super Bowl ad. Basic story: a guy runs into a Pepsi billboard. A bunch of people organize some kind of Woodstock around it, with every hip music singer in attendance. Then somehow the topic gets to what Pepsi’s new slogan should be, and there are cameos from just about every NON-musical famous person, until they all decide on simply "Gotta Have It."
The ad promised it would "change cola history forever!" "Gotta Have It" was Pepsi’s slogan for two months.
So yeah….pretty poor ad, and one big intelligence insulter.
Now compare this to Pepsi’s latest effort. P. Diddy jams with a diet Pepsi can….because the can is so hip that it can hang with him. They’ve….come a long way, haven’t they?

My rental unit is always badmouthing the soda choices I stock the fridge with…I brought home a case of this stuff and she snuck a half dozen of them out hoping I’d be unawares. I thought it was pretty yummy.

I like cream soda but I bet 20 bucks this stuff goes off the market before I ever get the urge to try it.

Mars, I had the same problem using Firefox.
I was able to view it by right-clicking in the black area and going to properties to find the file’s url. Then, I just downloaded the actual wmv, and watched it on my pc. Not streaming, but a work around until I feel like downloading new plug-ins.
Also, on topic, I like the new coke flavor, even though it’s lifespan is going to be soooo short.

I didn’t like it, but not because it was too sweet. I’ve just never liked the artificial vanilla flavor in soda. Throw in a scoop of ice cream and move along.

Back in 7th grade, when kona pepsi came out, my friend and I made our bodies believe that we enjoyed the taste of kona pepsi. I am not sure why we did this. . .yeah, I’m not sure why we force fed it to ourselves; that was some nasty soda.
I love following the existance of these things, but I haven’t really tried one in this recent explosion of flavors since the "lemon" Coke and Pepsi came out. I am a Coke purist but I am aquainted to someone who swore by Pepsi Vanilla for a while.
Oh, and even the commercial that combined that "Hilltop" commercial with G. Love couldn’t get me to like Coke Zero. If you’re going to make a "whole new diet" wouldn’t you at least get rid of the aspartame?

They’ve replaced the Cherry Coke in our machine with Black Cherry Vanilla Coke. I’d rather have just Cherry. Lucky for me, there’s a store that’s actually a shorter walk then to go to the Coke machine :) As far as the taste goes, it’s hit or miss with me. Sometimes I taste the vanilla, sometimes I taste the cherry, rarely do I taste the cola. Not horrible, but I won’t be buying another twelver of the stuff anytime soon.
As far as sodas in general go, I like the flavored Pepsis, but plain coke. Unless it’s from a fountain, then Pepsi is usually better. I can’t tell a difference between Diet Coke, Coke Zero, and Diet Coke(with Splenda). The first two have the exact same ingredients list, in the same order even. I think it’s a dirty trick. They all taste like artificial sweetener, though, which I can stomach, but not too well. Diet Mountain Dew is the only diet soda I can really enjoy.

I don’t drink much soda, caffiene does terrible things to me (though I do sneak some Pepsi from someone else’s glass occasionally).
This stuff looks especially grody. The lipstick markes are disconcerting.
Pepsi Blue was TERRIBLE…I LOVED Vanilla Pepsi, though. I lived in a house with 7 other roomates and we bought an entire SHELF of 2 liter bottles when we heard they weren’t going to be selling it anymore.
This Cherry Vanilla Coke stuff might be ok. Haven’t tried it yet, though. I guess my main concern is that they tried to cram too many flavours into the one pop.

With me, you can repeat Matt’s reason for not liking Black Cherry Vanilla Coke, but replace "Cream/Vanilla" with "Cherry." But because they’re is cream in it, it’s a little more tolerable than regular cherry sodas, which I absolutely detest. Go back a few blogs and you’ll find my original rant on the abomination from Satan.
And I begin pledging a Fraternity today! My parents are pissed because I came home from the initial meeting at 2:15…am, when we all thought the very latest I’d be back was midnight. Now they’re REALLY pissed and have been trying to talk (rather, command, whatever you want to use) me out of it. Help me.

Fraternities are pretty stupid. No help from me.
Pepsi Blue tasted like pine scented cleaner mixed with soda. I bought a 20 oz bottle of it once (or something of that equivelancy) right after it debuted (in my braver days) and it took both of us to finish just half of it. The rest got thrown out. Nasty, nasty stuff.
The only diet drinks I could tolerate were Diet Dr Pepper and strangely addictive Diet Cherry Canada Dry Ginger Ale which was a light pink colour. Not even sure if they make it anymore, but I drank my weight in that stuff many times over. Diet Dr Pepper gives me the jitters now that I am mostly weaned off caffiene. Oh well. If you are going to drink soda, its not good for you anyway, so you might as well indulge. Unless you are diabetic/hypoglaucemic (sp?)

And besides, isn’t the fraternity and, er… fem… ternity… of the XE board enough for you? If you like, we can order you to eat your own earwax and write degrading things on your forehead with lipstick and stuff. And then you can use those hundreds of dollars any social club will end up costing you to ship time-sensitive American delicacies to Erik and other overseas XErs. I actually liked Crystal Pepsi, but I think being 12 had something to do with it. When I think of it, I think of watching the commercials on Channel One in 7th grade homeroom. Did anyone else have that? Does it still exist for that matter?
I’m actually more intrigued by this Black Cherry Vanilla stuff now, only because my husband’s favorite beverage of all time is cream soda (A & W to be more specific.) I’m not so much a fan, though. Every time I try it I’m more convinced of my original observation that it tastes like liquified, carbonated birthday cake icing. I’ll have to get him a bottle of the new Coke and steal a sip.

Ok, let’s do this in order…
I’ve been a Sprite man for most of my life, but since I got married I’ve been drinking Pepsi Twist by the gallon.
Norbert I’m in Alpha Psi Omega, but that is more of an honor society really. The worst thing I had to do was pay 50 bucks and perform Shakespeare. Can’t really get down with the whole Frat thing.
becki, I’ve tried the Snapple (Apple) Pie. My first-sip-reaction was "eh… wait, what’s that weird aftertaste?" However, upon subsequent drinking I have come to appreciate that despite all logic it tastes like I am drinking a pie crust. Wendy the Snapple lady has somehow figured out how to make pear juice and corn syrup tase like I threw a Table Talk in the blender. It’s blowin’ my mind…

I would probably love that stuff cos i love creaming soda and as soon as i saw that flavour i though yummo.
Unfortunately down here in the land of oz we probably won’t get this flavour for a long time if at all.
Coke had just released coke zero down here and has advertising everywhere for it and a really cool ad with a guy bus surfing! Anyway vanilla coke is yum but i won’t try coke with lime yckkk.
I remember about ten years ago Pepsi had different flavours down here, i think they had rasberry, strawberry and cherry and i really like those. They’ve now released a pepsi with spice but i’m wary of it. i think i’ve rambled about soft drink for long enough!

On a similar note to your Snapple experience, I recently had a cup of Apple Turnover flavored yogurt. Although it was refrigerated, it tasted like a freshley baked, flakey crusted apple turnover, and even had bits of real apple in it. Amazing what they can do with artificial flavors!
Lori
I have to say that I, like your husband, am also a huge creme soda fan. Jones makes the best(in my opinion) with A&W being a close second. The Vanilla Float flavored Big Reds are pretty good, too. They’re a little more "creamy" tasting than the regular ones. My wife likes creme sodas, but rarely drinks them from the can. She insists on bottles.

So, how would you say it compares to Pepsi Blue, Pepsi Holiday Spice, and Crystal Pepsi? (three drinks that only I liked, appearantly).
Probably better than the first two, though the first two knock this one out of the park in their sheer presentation. There was nothing really that wrong with how Crystal Pepsi tasted.

Remember that great Pepsi blue commercial that they only ran in full-version once?
The one with the chanting monks synching with the garage band, and one guy said "The remix is good, but I prefer the original", and for somereason they cut that ending off whenever the showed it again.
I got some Diet Black Cherry Vanilla Coke in my fridge and I don’t think it’s all that bad. Of course, with the exceptions of regular cream sodas, I’ve never came into contact with a soda I absolutely hated (although I do prefer some over others).
PS: Charlie Brown Valentine is on tonite. But so is a new Price is Right Million Dollar Spectacular and that’s what I’m going to watch.

Anyway, I don’t know if anyone mentioned in a previous thread, but am I the only one whose mind is blown by the Wendy’s commercial with the kid(s?) from Pete and Pete? It may have been on longer elsewhere, but I just saw it the first time a few days ago, and looked up, and was like "wow, it’s the younger Pete!" and then I tried to figure out if the other one is actually the older Pete or not. I’m still not sure. I really really wish there was an IMDB like thing for TV commercials.

You’re in college, and still living at home? For the love of all that is holy, move out. You can live at home during the summers, but geez, during the school year, you’re going to have enough going on without needing parents getting too intimate with your comings and goings.
As for the fraternity thing, depending on how the social thing is at your school, I’d say avoid it. Unless of course there are almost no non-greeks on campus, and it is the only way you can socialize.

On the topic of Matt finding all this food I don’t find that to be that strange. What is strange is that many of these foods came out WAY before anyone even thought of Ebay. These people just had the enlightenment to never throw away anything, even if the experation date is in hyroglipics

First off, Fraternatities are not the way to go if you ask me. I had two roommates, one went into a frat, one did not. The one that did not has been thankful for the past four years because we see what the other guy has to put up with. I would advise strongly against it. If you are friendly and sociable you will meet tons of people, and from my experience, there are tons of cool greek people, but also lots of "this is the only way I’ll make friends" people. But hey, to each his/her own. Greeks are fine with me and I have lots of close friends in fraternities and soroities, it’s just not really my thing.
And Channel One Rocked! Probably the only time I paid attention in the 7th grade.

To answer the question from last thread: Grizzly Bites.
BCV-Coke is ok, I guess, nothing to rape the cattle and stampede the women over, but not vomitrocious. Although, I do wonder about Crystal Gravy. What did they make it out of, and how did it taste? And, can one actually make something like that? Serve me a bowl of that, with a big glass of that blue milk Aunt Beru poured for Luke.

Attention all former Surge lovers! There is a new soda out called vault that tastes identical to surge. You’ll love it, give it a whirl. BTW, I think Black Cherry Vanilla coke is pretty good but needs to be cold while drinking. I bet it tastes awful when warm.
"Thanks" for all the feedback, guys. I guess I forgot to add a few details:
-I go to a commuter school, 20 minutes away from my house (that, and only place I got some kind of scholorship for). Why didn’t I leave LI? I recently put $5000 on my MetroCard, and you don’t walk away from a commitment like that. And it’s a small school at that.
-only 2 Frats on campus: Sigma Xi Epsilon and Delta Psi Omega (the one i’m pledging). The one I’m pledging has been around much longer than the other (celebrates a 10th year anniversary this year), and on the first full week of my first semester last year, guy comes up to me, we make small talk, etc. Turned out he was pledgemaster this year and said if he’d be happy if I joined sometime in the future.
-I don’t appear to be a "poster boy" for Frats, I don’t drink, do drugs, or being athletic at all, but I wanted to join to not be isolated to my house as much.
-Next, the condition of my parents has gotten better. Dad’s ok with it again, still don’t know from mom.
And back on topic, I LOVED Pepsi Blue, to me it tasted like a Blue Raspberry Airhead, and I got so pissed when it dissappeared.

Lori - yes, I had Channel One. I thought it was okay until about 8th grade…then it got king of old - I completely ignored it once in high school. I did find the 1992 election tracking interesting, but I STILL didn’t learn much about our governmental system until latter high school and college. The only reason I really cared that much about it was that it was time NOT spent doing schoolwork. Instead I watched TV and learned about current events. I remember the girls in my classes being like so "AWwwww…" when that Ryan guy left for college. I always thought that was kind of lame…oh, well.
Rhino and Norbert - I am actually an Alpha Psi Omega alumni. It was…decent, I suppose. I kind of one of those people that didn’t want to be in charge of anything, just kind of wanted to be "in". The most fun probably was when I got to see the other suckers who were going to pledge, because of the stuff I got put through. Mainly, I ended up embarrassing myself (which happened way too much for my liking from college on backwards) and I was in…of course, I was the sole pledge for my frat. I too lived (and still do) live at home, mainly for financial reasons - hoping to change that situation this year, maybe.
I don’t drink much pop nowadays but when I do it is usually a cola or lemon-lime drink. I really try to stay away from most caffeine unless I REALLY need it - and then I usually end up feeling worse and more tired. I opt for iced tea usually - or a beer. I DO remember REALLY loving Crystal Pepsi and hope they bring it back. My Dad bought a BUNCH of Lemon Pepsi back in the day, mainly because it was on sale. I wasn’t really that fond of the stuff, although I DO remember drinking Surge in high school like it was oxygen. I swear I must have drunk SO much of that stuff as a teenager…don’t think my body could take it now. As a kid , Vernors and Faygo were staples of my childhood. I loved Rock ‘n Rye, Red Pop, and cream soda. Anyone remember Burple, that stuff in the collapsible container?
And finally, this is going to some kind of lame, but how do you format and add the cute little Jason and Chucky to posts?…

1. It tasted like Cherry Coke to me.
2. There’s Vanilla Coke, so where’s Chocolate Coke?
Chocolate Mint Coke?
Coke with peanut butter.
Mocha Almond Fudge Coke.
Klondike Coke.
Banana Coke.
Orange Coke.
Jawbreaker Coke.
Coke Sherbert.
Coke with Rum already in it.
Chocodile Coke.
Cool-Whip Coke.

I have not bought Coke in awhile. I have been buying cases of mixed SNAPPLES. I need to read the real facts, cause I love useless information. Today I learned a Dragonfly has six legs but can’t walk. Cool.

Personally, I love the plain Vanilla Coke, which, save for the fountain kind that you get at McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and cinemas, was the first Coca-Cola that I guzzled on a regular basis since they discontinued New Coke (which I actually loved; I would not be at all surprised if it turned out that vanilla was one of the new ingredients in the 1985 new formula).
Dunno if they have Black Cherry Vanilla yet in Canada. Can’t say that I’ve checked.
There is a Save Vanilla Coke petition out there, if anyone wants to sign it.
