12/20/2005: He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special on DVD!

Aside from today’s entries that will be posted TODAY, the Advent and Advert Calendars are finally up to date! On the Advent side, we’ve got some sticky Santa situations mucking up what should’ve been a righteous celebration after Waiterbot’s defeat, and no, I have absolutely no idea how it’s going to end up. On the Advert side, old commercials from Radio Shack, Burger King, Little Debbie and beyond all conspire to make your holiday season just a weeeee bit more Christmassy. Hope you’re digging it.

What’s probably going to end up being the highlight of my 2005 Christmas season is up above. The He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special is out now on DVD! Holy shit, I’d repeat it but you just read it and whatever but just know that it bears repeating. I’m glad I finally gave up on trying to be a VHS guy for no other reason than the fact that I had such a big VHS collection, because I just can’t believe the amount of awesome shit coming out on DVD. This one just takes the cake. It’s really cheap, too — so cheap that I was expecting a bare bones affair. This is anything but a bare bones affair. First off, the box has that weird 3D etching that makes He-Man and friends seem ever so slightly like they’re going to jump off and eat me, and secondly and thirdly and fourthly are the insane amount of special features, ranging from commentaries to a music video. I’m a sucker for candy canes, nyuk nyuk nyuk. While I actually do prefer the original minty canes above all else, I can’t resist trying out the many thousand new candy canes on the market meant to taste like specific, popular candies. I’ve had everything from Spree candy canes to Hershey’s Chocolate candy canes, but if I had to make my bid and spend the rest of my life with one and only one brand, I think I’d have to go with Starburst. Jesus Mary are these things goooood.

For the sake of being the first to post, let me just say that I hate Candy Canes. I freakin LOVE the idea of them…so Christmasy, but they totally gross me out. All covered with your own spit for however long it takes you to eat them. And kids invariably get that sticky crap all over their hands….ick. Glad someone out their eats them, just don’t ever let me see you doing it.

speaking of He-Man, I noticed all He-man toys were 75% off in the discount shelf of my local deptartment store. I guess the return of He-man didn’t catch like they were hoping.

I never knew about a MOTU Xmas Special until now. Between the new and the old tv series I prefer the new one. Skeletor looks really cool in the new series and I don’t know why Cartoon Network for LatinAmerica cut it off!!!

Blueberry candy canes, cinnamon candy canes, cherry candy canes, and strawberry-kiwi candy canes all rock. I don’t know if I’ve seen any this year, what with the proliferation of "name brand" candies making canes, but I remember eating the hell out of the "gourmet" candy canes when I was a kid. We’d usually get 5 or 6 different flavors, use them as tree decorations, and just pick them off at our leisure.

I had no clue that was out on DVD. I loved it as a child but I’m a bit warry to watch it again and spoil the magic. I also wish candy canes were available year round, but then again that might spoil their special magic.

The other day we were trying to find some standard candy canes, but could only find the wacky variant candy canes.

I’m with Jem, I can’t stand candy canes. Usually, though, I’ll buy some and put them on my tree. Friends come over and eat them, and I feel like I’m enjoying them vicariously. Even though that sounds kind of gross.

And I’ll never get over how they make He-Man and She-Ra all lovey dovey. Arms around each others’ waists, swords crossing…ick.

Matt, I picked up a Stinkor mini-statue at Sam Goody today in the mall. They’re the same scale as the MOTU figures and by the same guys who made them. I knew you were a fan of el stinkola so I thought I’d pass the news along. They had a few more left when I went today (along with Grizzlor and Clamp Champ).

Mmmmm. . .an update 20 mins before work is done . . .I will read the update and save the calender for tomorrow. . .or tonight.

has anyone seen the folgers christmas commercial?its the one from the late 80s and at the end the camera shows a gift basket with the modern folgers coffee plastic container with the resealable lid.ive seen this commercial 1000 times.i know its old because in the commercial he opens the old ass metal folgers can with a can opener.i wondered if anyone noticed the modern gift basket at the end?

Jelly Belly has candy canes with flavors based off of their jelly bean line. I didn’t buy this particular set of flavors, but one of the boxes contains popcorn-flavored candy canes. I looked in the ingredients and it actually has salt in it.

dont worry becki, a few of us discussed the hell out of it a couple weeks ago. i think we saw it when rudolph was on.

and ya, i thought the change at the end was crappy. i thought the new plastic canister in the basket just messed it up.

nothing going on at work, i just keep checking back over and over, it’s making me feel crazy.

And nice with adding the "X-Entertainment" on the screen of the new Adverts, so no one can claim them as their own. Some idiots will try to take em anyway, but they’re still gonna be yours!

Ahh, the day before heading home for Christmas for the usual week. Finishing up my annual viewing of "Santa Claus: The Movie" On DVD! Boo yah! Course it’s kinda weird, being that Santa dies in the first five minutes to be reborn by weird star powers. But man I love the first movie where he becomes Santa Claus, rather than the second movie it becomes for some odd reason when it has to go to modern day.

i for one am happy that they are recycling the old holiday standard commercials. it gives me a warm fuzzy

I have to say that my favorite flavor candy cane has always been Spearmint. Damn hard to find which makes them all the better when I do.

Never saw the He’man special, but looking at He-man and She-ra arm in arm like lovers who can’t keep there hands off each other just creeps me out completely. With He-mans smile and the surprised look on She-ra’s face one can only wonder where there hands are.

Also, I’ve been seeing x-e mentions all over the place. You had a mention in the last Wizard that came out about a month ago, and today on IMDB they’ve got a link to the old Spidey Crayola review. Not real sure why, but I guess this will probably result in some increased traffic.

Now that you mention it Wenthral, every time I glance at the DVD I keep thinking the emblem on She-Ra’s chest is He-mans oddly bent hand feeling her up. Look at it real quick and see if you can see it.

The arm you are looking at is She-ra’s going behind he-man. You can see his at all. both though almost have to have there hands resting squarely on each others ass.

I just picked up the He-Man and She-Ra Xmas DVD the other day. Almost didn’t, though, it wasn’t on the Xmas list I submitted to my mother a week after Halloween. But she sent me out to FYE to get stuff for my brothers along with 3 DVDs of my chosing. Got that one, Garfield Holiday (which I have on VHS as well), and some cute fluffy girly anime I’m sure no one else is interested in.

I know how you feel about the VHS collection thing. I’ve got about 1,000 videos and with the incoming DVDs I’m getting freaking swamped. I keep meaning to just set the DVR to transfer them while I sleep, but I keep forgetting or run out of discs. When Real Ghostbusters comes out in Feb, the random ep volumes won’t have 3 eps I have on my DVD and I’ll wind up getting 3 more discs, then they’ll announce season-sets coming out, then I’ll have to start slitting throats. *hiss*

I suppose it is the wrong shade of arm now that you mention it. I don’t care, I’m going to keep seeing what I want to see.

Matt, of course we’re diggin’ it. I won’t get a chance to check the Advent till tomorrow, sniff. Anyone want to buy me a new computer for Xmas? Anyone??

I love candy canes. All flavors. Although I think my favorite are the Hershey’s Chocolate Mint ones, because if you use them to stir your cocoa it’s an orgasm in a mug. I bought 2 boxes of candy canes so far this year, cinnamon and regular. I’m the only one around who eats them and I’ve been mowing through them like they’re going out of style.

Never saw the He-Man special that I can remember, but I loved me some She-Ra as a kid, so maybe I did and I just don’t remember. Then again, I never had cable till age 14, so I probably haven’t seen it. And yeah, I am royally creeped out by the cover picture. Royally.

Off I go to Grandma’s house to make some fudge for work…I’ll be back tomorrow with an extra 10 lbs. from eating the scraps.

Thank you for that link Jessica Marie (laughed my butt off)! Between that and the advent and advert updates, a crummy day just got a lot brighter. Also, I bought the He-man and She-ra Christas Special a couple of weeks ago and it was better than I remember it. I’m pretty sure this shows just what a horrible loser I am but oh well…

Anyone else been to a radio shack where they have like 50-100+ overstock of those Pocket Repeaters (Simon-ripoffs)? They must have made fourty billion of the things.

I like the idea of candy canes, but I never seem to eat them because I’m not big on peppermint and I never get out to the store and look for the other flavors.

So far most of my non-material Christmas wishes have come true: my financial aid will come through but it will be a few days late so I have to keep registering for classes, getting dropped, and re-registering. I got all A’s and B’s this semester. I don’t know how my mom’s cousin is doing but I know my great-aunt’s party is still on, which means she’s in a good enough mood to THROW a party, which means her son is not near death or anything like that. So, things are looking good for me this Christmas!

That He-Man DVD is hillarious. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed it–we laughed hysterical at the She-Ra music. I guess we forgot that it sounded like leftover 70s porno music. That music video had us rolling–they’re talking about "love." Aren’t they twins? Buy this if you have the chance–its such a retro Christmas special! It also comes compelte with the Filmations closing logo title card.

With a lack of music here at home (I didn’t feel like lugging home CDs and my dad doesn’t exactly know how to download mp3s) the X-E 2005 jukebox is treatin’ me really nice.

Went to BEST BUY (and a ton of other places yesterday) doing the Christmas shopping. They did not have the HE-MAN and SHE-RA CHRISTMAS SPECIAL that I was so eager to get. So, I just ordered it off AMAZON. I have never seen it but I know that it will be great. I also picked up the MOTU SEASON 1 as part of my Christmas. Me and Mrs. Manimal are just going through the motions this year and buying presents for each other in the open. No surprises but we still we plan on wrapping the gifts. Go figure.

I saw the "He-Man & She-Ra Christmas Special" at a couple of places up at the malls, including Suncoast Video and Best Buy. I was a good girl and didn’t buy it, as I was Christmas shopping and needed to save money, but I may pick it up after the holidays if I can find it again (and if I can’t, I may just go to Amazon).

Nicole, I love the Hershey’s Chocolate Mint candy canes, too. I must have eaten a ton the first year my mom found them. I only have regular cheap ones on the tree, and I usually don’t eat them. It’s too much for me, and my family has plenty of candy of its own.

Yeah, I picked up MOTU season 1. I was expecting the first episode to be like the beginning of He-Man with the Sorceress giving him the sword and all. Of course I couldn’t remember ever having seen said episode, but I figured I’d just forgotten it. But it just jumps right on in, and I don’t mind. I’m sure I completely didn’t care as a kid, as long as I got to see Beastman getting his butt kicked once again.

Wow. Flsvoured candy sticks. The mint ones are boring enough that I have one left over from last year. It’s now hanging on Tree #1. We have ‘four’ trees, of varying sizes, ranging from Twig to Bough. Deck the halls, and stuff.
So, uh, yeah. I need some flavoured ones.

Loving the Santa II arc in the advent calendar. Hate to admit it, but the Waiterbot thing didn’t really have that same awesome appeal that the past two calendars had. Maybe because it was more focused on him than the actual presents, which just got a passing mention. Though I guess they are just wagons and kegs, there’s still a bunch of fun to be had with them. As the Holy Cow showed.

I think Matt said in a post that he’s off of work this week. No wonder he’s not affected.

I finally saw the old folgers commercial last night, while decorationg the christmas tree. Perfect timing. Me, me mom, and me bro were doing the tree thing until 12 or so last night. Our tree is a bit funny looking ( it didn’t look funny at the lot), but it looks nice now with all the trimmins on it.

The UK box gets points for Hordak, but I prefer the States’ version, because I Am An American!!!

I jumped on the site yesterday to catch up and must have somehow skipped the blog comments - I don’t know how that’s possible. Since I only post when I have something to say, I feel compelled even though I’m late. Here are some of my belated comments (I had more comments about other topics, but it was getting ridiculously long so I deleted them):

I actually love Dan Fogelberg’s "Another Auld Lang Syne", but I’m a dork like that. What infuriates me is that "Dear Mr. Jesus" isn’t even a Chrismtas song, they just trudge it out on Christmas to make people cry for no good reason. Does anyone remember when that song originally came out? We (most of us anyway) were kids - it was probably 1986 or 1987. Some little girl got beaten to death by her parents and it was all over the news (I remember because she was a kid like me and it affected me a little.) The song was in memory of her. Now, 20 years later, they’re playing it between "It’s a Marshmallow World" and "Feliz Navidad". I don’t get it. Also, there’s one thing I loathed about the "Do They Know It’s Christmas" song - the line "There won’t be snow in Africa this Christmastime." Like that’s one reason why we consider them less fortunate - their inability to celebrate a white Christmas. It’s freakin’ Africa! My husband had to chisel his car out of ice yesterday morning to go to work. Yeah, those poor, sad Africans with their balmy Decembers. Say a prayer for them tonight, won’t you?

By the way, Bob Carlisle should be tied up and gagged for all of eternity. I entertained the thought after "Butterfly Kisses", but "Christmas Shoes" confirmed it.

bitchpants, I fully agree with you there. As a lake effect snow band resident, I have over 2′ of snow and it’s just now the first day of winter. I say, let’s pack some of this shit up and send it to those damn warm climates.

Lori and Schroder–you guys cracked me up, but dare I laugh out loud while I’m working. I’m not supposed to be doing this during work anyway.

My last day was supposed to be Friday, but because Wednesday is the end of the payweek, the office manager came in and informed me that they wouldn’t need me tomorrow or Friday. They don’t even know how late they’ll be open on Friday, so its pointless to come in for a lousy two day paycheck (but I make $10 an hour, so how bad could two days pay be?). It’s still $160 before taxes, but I guess when you figure in deductions and stuff, it would probably come out to just over $100. But still, it’s $100 I could use while I’m unemployed. Hopefully, it won’t be 2 months like the last time. Although this time, I have $1500 more than I did last time (Despite credit card bills during shopping season, I managed to save alot of money), and I’m getting a discount card for prescriptions b/c I dont have insurance. Covers all my stuff I need. I think I’ll be fine.

There won’t be snow in Florida this Christmas either, although I wish there would be, because when it DOES snow here (last true ground-covering was in ‘88) it’s kinda funny. Nobody has proper snow gear and nobody knows how to drive in the snow, so everyone freaks the hell out and everything just kinda shuts down. We don’t even have proper winter clothes and most of our schools are built with an open design to save on cooling costs during the 9 months of summer we have every year. Once when I was in high school they cancelled school for a day just because it was really cold (12 degress F) - no snow, just cold and nobody had heavy coats to wear.

There’s somebody on Fark who uses the Login "Somebodypleasekillthechristmasshoes" due to an overwhelming hate for that song. Now, here’s a prescription from yours truly: next time you get assaulted by that song, forced upon you by an otherwise well-meaning compatriot or DJ, have a recording of, or request for, the song "DOA" by Blood Rock ready to go. Nothing counters contrived sappiness about a dying parent like a song about the last moments of a car accident victim. "God in Heaven, teach me how to die" indeed.

ALLISON, i had that happen to me once too. i put in a three week notice instead of two weeks, so that i could leave at the end of the year, since my new job didnt need me till after the first. I was told instead that my last week would be the short week before christmas, hence screwing me out of christmas AND new years holiday pay.

Also, I got another completely random story for ya. I saw the name *JEM* as the top posting. My boyfriend’s mom told me that my boyfriend liked JEM when he was a kid. This came out after I said I had JEM toys. She said "Oh Steve liked JEM when he was little…" right in front of him. I think JEM came on in 1987, which would have put my boyfriend around 8-9 years old. I was only 4-5 years old (I turned 5 in October 1987). Haha, nice confession.

At the time JEM was on, We were living in the country, and Satellite dishes were the size (and cost) of swimming pools. So it was one of the few things on for me to watch. It’s main saving grace was it was a Marvel production. Which meant that there were neat little touches not to be found in other girl shows at the time. Secret identities, holographic computers, and a dead mother? Let’s see Bratz work ideas like those into their toys!

Y’know, after years of listening to the Same Two Christmas Tapes, I think I’ve finally decided on my favourite christmas song.

I went to my local Best Buy to pick up the He-Man Christmas special, and it was sold out as well. I guess Best Buy didn’t order enough or something. I have heard from others who couldn’t find it a week after it came out too.

Oh, blog entries with no comments allowed make me nuts. I get a huge kick out of seeing articles I remember being posted like two weeks ago described as "old" though, so it totally balances out.
I too thought of Matt when hearing about the strikes and hoped he’d hit those vacay days. Today marked the day that I officially lost patience with the Xmas music playing at my own employment…I think it was the third time they played "It Happened In Sun Valley" in three hours that finally did it. God, that song is absolutely terrible.

Wow, an IMDB Post! Matt continues to get a bigger and bigger audience (rightly so). I keep mentioning him to my boyfriend as "that website guy" and bragging whenever XE gets a nod in a mag or another website (like Anthony Daniels’ website, for example!) It just makes me really really glad when I know other people are made as happy as I am from this awesome spot on the web. Way to go, Matt!

Later yesterday afternoon, "Christmas Shoes" popped back into my head, and I was pondering one of the things that annoys me the most about that song - the fact that this little kid says stuff that no little kid would say. It’s like he was…coached! So, here’s my theory about what the song is REALLY about. His mom isn’t dying, she’s not even sick, she’s just some broke deadbeat who’s pimping out her son’s sweet spirit for some shoes.

"Go in there and tell the clerk that I’m dying. Say…I don’t know…that you want me to look beautiful if I meet Jesus tonight. I dare any cashier not to hand them over after that."
"But, Mom…"

I noticed Matt’s slight gaffe too. Maybe they took the young man to that psycho pediatrician that Hartman played in that SNL skit. "I’m sorry, but your little girl was born with a penis."

I remember that old SNL skit. I was watching the movie "How I Got into College" earlier today, and Phil Hartman played an SAT coach alongside his SNL co-star, Nora Dunn. You remember her–she boycotted Andrew Dice Clay.

Speaking of SNL associations, I saw a commercial on HBO before the aforementioned movie with…tada…Dennis Miller! Man he got OLD! He’s wearing glasses now–very professional-looking. He looks like a college professor now with his beard, shaggy hair, and glasses. He’s retreating back to that early 90s look he sported, but with glasses. He was promoting his next HBO special. Bet he’ll mention his new specs.

I’ve got Christmas to celebrate in about an hour and a half with my immediate family. Can’t wait to eat some of that Christmas Pizza Hut.

I haven’t liked Dennis Miller since he started making money and turned into the mouthpiece for the Republican Party. Not to mention his awful stint on Monday Night Football.

I just watched the Pine Mountain commercial. I am a big sucker for penguins, and could be in the middle of something, but if a penguin waddles into my field of vision (obivously it will be on TV–I live in New Jersey, not the North Pole), I’ll run over to the source faster than you can say "oh how cute." No, I don’t have ADD….oooh, red ball! I’m kidding.

I saw Kong twice and absolutely swear that the interminable first 40 that were so tedious the first time through weren’t so bad the second time through. Go figure.

I absolutely love Advent Day 22. I swear, that’s completely made the fact that my actual Christmas is going to suck donkey balls not seem so important anymore. Adorable. I have warm fuzzies.

My brother went to see King Kong the other night; he has a friend who works at the theater so he gets to see flicks for free…and he hated it. He told me it was completely ridiculous and over-the-top, to which I replied, "It’s a movie about a giant ape, dipshit." I’d like to see it, but I’m not expecting to absolutely love it. I’ll probably wait till it’s on DVD.

I still can’t believe Peter Jackson is a reputable director now. If anyone’s seen Dead Alive and/or Meet the Feebles, you’ll know exactly what I mean. I’ve never been the same since Meet the Feebles…Matt, if you haven’t had the pleasure, you’ve got to find that. I’d love to read a review. Everyone needs to be scarred by that movie, and then remember it’s by Peter Jackson. I’d kill to show that to the LOTR fanboys/girls who think PJ is da shit and watch their fragile little worlds come crashing down. Then again, I’m just a mean, sadistic bitch.

My friend had the same gripe, he said the fight between rex and kong was too far fetched. I was all like, its a Damn giant ape and a dino. It may do what it pleases.
